4. THESIS STATEMENT
● žA statement that states the purpose or the main idea
of an essay.
● žIt must be written as the last sentence in the
introductory paragraph.
● žThere are two types of thesis statement:
1. General thesis statement
2. Specific thesis statement

5. GENERAL THESIS STATEMENT
● žA sentence that contains the overview of the whole
essay.
Examples
● The internet brings many advantages to school
children.
● There are several reasons why we should protect our
environment.

6. SPECIFIC THESIS STATEMENT
● žA sentence that contains the topic and main ideas of
the whole essay.
Examples :
● The causes of juvenile delinquency are broken families,
poverty and peer influence.
● Excessive dieting can result in eating disorders,
malnutrition and stress in one’s life.

7. Example 1
Topic : How to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
● žGeneral thesis statement : There are many ways to
maintain a healthy lifestyle.
● žSpecific thesis statement : There are three ways to
maintain a healthy lifestyle which are by eating
balance diet, doing sports activities and avoiding
negative habits.

8. Example 2
Topic : Advantages of living in rural areas.
● žGeneral thesis statement : Living in rural areas has
many benefits.
● žSpecific thesis statement : Lower cost of living,
peaceful environment and harmonious relationship
in the community are the advantages of living in
rural areas.
