Trophoblasts are cells that form the outer layer of the blastocyst and later develop into a large part of the placenta. They provide nutrients to the embryo and are the first cells to differentiate from the fertilized egg. Trophoblasts play an important role in embryo implantation and interaction with the maternal uterus. They surround the placental villi and facilitate the exchange of nutrients, wastes, and gases between the maternal and fetal systems. Extravillous trophoblasts penetrate the uterus to physically attach the placenta and remodel the uterine arteries to ensure steady blood flow to the growing fetus.
