Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Nearly three-fourths of the samples tested by the
U.S. Department of Agriculture contained pesticide
residues.

cases, peeled.

These are of special concern for public health
because residue tests conducted by the U.S.

foods laced with particularly toxic pesticides.

21-day experiment - The impact of an
organic diet :
The Palmberg family ate a conventional diet and
submitted urine samples to the SERI laboratory,
where analysts found a number of insecticides,
fungicides and plant growth regulators.
The family switched to an organics only diet,
including soaps and personal care items, for two
weeks, and submitted daily urine samples.
Results showed a noticeable difference in the
bodies’ pesticide loads after just one day. After
two weeks, there was very little evidence of the
pesticides and other compounds in the urine
samples.
According to the Mayo Clinic, the reduction in
pesticide exposure is a major reason to consider
choosing organic food.

Ozone and Herbicides:
• Ozone can oxidize and degrade herbicides.
• Atrazine is a dangerous herbicide in USA
drinking water. Before 1993 is was the most
heavily used herbicide.
• Microbiologist Bruce Hemming’s found residues
of the glyphosate herbicide in breast milk
samples.
• Testing from private groups detected glyphosate
residues in breast milk, honey, cereal, wheat
flour, soy sauce, infant formula, and other
substances.
• Glyphosate food supply testing has not been
conducted by the FDA.
• The FDA will start testing soybeans and corn for
glyphosate.
18. 18
Pesticides and Herbicides:
• Theo Colborn, Ph.D, found over 60% of all
agricultural herbicides in use and up to 90% of
pesticide products are capable of disrupting
endocrine and/ or reproductive systems.
• Several studies have linked glyphosate to non-
Hodgkin lymphoma and kidney and liver
problems. Even trace amounts can be harmful
due to extended exposure.

Food recalls
The USDA, FDA, and food manufacturer or distributor
initiate product recalls removing foods from the market.
Product testing isolates unsafe or potentially unsafe
foods.
For example:
• E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium
that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and
abdominal cramps 1–10 days (3–4 days, on
average) after exposure the organism.
20. 20
Common Pathogens
• Salmonellosis, the most common bacterial
foodborne illnesses, causes diarrhea, abdominal
cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours.
• Listeriosis causes fever, muscle aches,
headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance
and convulsions (sometimes preceded by
diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms).
The infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths,
premature delivery or life-threatening infection of
the newborn. Serious and sometimes fatal
infections occur in older adults and persons
with weakened immune systems.

Ozone – What is it?
Why you need Tri-Oxy® Water Ozonator
01
02
03
Ozone is an active stage of oxygen made up
of three oxygen atoms.
Ozone has the ability to kill bacteria and
viruses commonly found in food and water.
Ozone has a powerful sanitizing and oxidizing
effect. One molecule of Ozone = 3000 to
10,000 molecules of chlorine.2
24. 24
• Ozone destroys algae, viruses, bacteria, and
fungi
from the inside out through cell lysing.
• Lysing ruptures cell walls and makes reactivation
impossible.
• Lysis refers to the breaking down of a cell, often
by viral, enzymic or osmotic mechanisms that
compromise the integrity of the cell wall.
• Ozone controls diseases and odors by
destroying the offending organisms.

How ozone reduces pathogens
Sources:
http://www.wqpmag.com/eliminating-bacteria-ozone
http://www.ozonesolutions.com/journal/2011/how-quickly-does-ozone-kill-bacteria/
Ozone kills a variety of microbes with a small dose
and residual. Many factors determine the residual,
but generally, the higher the ozone production, the
higher the residual and the longer it will last in the
water. The required residual is dictated by the
amount and type of microbes to be killed. When
ozone degrades, it reverts back to oxygen.
Ozone oxidizes organic material in
bacterial membranes, weakens cell
walls causing cellular rupture.
Exposure to external environment, causes
almost immediate death of pathogen.
26. 26
Effectiveness of Ozone:
• Kills bacteria, Giardia, Cryptosporidium,
parasites, fungi, molds and other microbes.
Ozonation standard for killing most organisms
is 0.3 ppm ozone for three-minutes.1
• ≥2.0 ppm Ozonated water kills bacteria at
sufficient levels within 1 second. > 2.0 ppm of
dissolved ozone was not faster and did not kill
more bacteria.

The Tri-Oxy® RE-ION ΙΙ is a dual functioning machine that is equipped with both a plasma and ozone generator. The user is able to purify the air
with plasma, as well as produce ozone for several household uses.
Uses high frequency and voltage to supply ozone through corona discharge.
Functions
Produces ozone for drinking water and air purification.
• When ozone is used to saturate water, we recommend turning on an exhaust fan or
opening a window to get adequate ventilation.
• When using ozone for cleaning and deodorizing air, exit the area to avoid inhalation of
too much ozone gas.
29. 29
• Greater air purification than a negative ion generator.
o Produces negative and positive ions with ozone stringlets.
o Place unit 2.5 feet away during plasma operation.
• Ozone and plasma modes run separately or at the same time.
