TRIGONMETRY
(MATHEMATICS BRANCH)
THAT STUDIES RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SIDE
LENGTHS AND ANGLES OF TRIANGLES.
THE WORD TRIGONOMETRY COMES FROM THE
GREEK WORDS TRIGONON (“TRIANGLE”) AND
METRON (“TO MEASURE”).
The hypotenuse of a right triangle is always the side opposite
the right angle. It is the longest side in a right triangle.
The other two sides are called the opposite and adjacent sides.
These sides are labeled in relation to an angle.
The opposite side is across from a given angle.
The adjacent side is the non-hypotenuse side that is next to a
given angle.
Trigonometric ratios in right triangles
The ratios of the sides of a right triangle are called
trigonometric ratios.
Three common trigonometric ratios are
the sine (sin),
cosine (cos)
and tangent (tan)
A way to remember the definitions of the three most common trigonometry functions: sin,
cos and tan.
SOH Sine = Opposite over Hypotenuse. sin x=O/H
CAH Cosine = Adjacent over Hypotenuse. cos x= A/H
TOA Tangent = Opposite over Adjacent. tan x =O/A
SOH CAH TOA – trigonometry;
