Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) share similar chemical structures and biological properties. They are highly lipophilic and tissue-bound outside the central nervous system. Their anticholinergic and noradrenergic effects can cause unpleasant or dangerous side effects. Examples of TCAs described include imipramine, desipramine, clomipramine, amitriptyline, nortriptyline, protriptyline, trimipramine, doxepin, and maprotiline.
