Functions of MGT-Controlling -2024

2. INTRODUCTION
•In unit one, we discuss the management functions
which include planning, organizing directing,
controlling and staffing.
•But my area of interest is controlling where we will
look at the definition and its importance.
3. INTRODUCTION
•Management functions lead to the creation of
a cohesive organization and whatever type of
a manager we are talking about, he/she
performs these functions in one way or
another.
4. GENERAL OBJECTIVE
•At the end of the session, the student should
acquire knowledge on the basic management
functions (Control) and be able to apply this
in the day to day practice.
5. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
At the end of the session the student should be
able to:
•Discuss the management function of
Controlling
•Explain the different importance of
Controlling
6. CONTROLLING
•Controlling is determining what is being
accomplished –
•that is, evaluating performance and, if
necessary, applying corrective measures so
that performance takes place according to
plans"(Cole, 2004).
7. CONTROLLING
• It implies measurement of accomplishment
against the standards and correction of deviation
if any to ensure achievement of organizational
goals.
8. CONTROLLING
•The purpose of controlling is to ensure that
everything occurs in conformities with the
standards.
•An efficient system of control helps to predict
deviations before they actually occur.
9. CONTROLLING
• Controlling is the process of checking whether or
not proper progress is being made towards the
objectives and goals and acting if necessary, to
correct any deviation.
10. CONTROLLING
• Controlling is the measurement & correction of
performance activities of subordinates in order to
make sure that the enterprise objectives and plans
desired to obtain them as being accomplished”.
11. CONTROLLING
•The manager must make certain that the whole
thing occurs in compliance with the plans
adopted, the directions issued and the principles
established.
•This is the controlling function of management,
and involves three essentials that is:
•Establishing performance standards.

•Evaluating current performance and
comparing it against the established
performance standards.
•Taking corrective action to any performance
that doesn’t meet established standards.
13. CONTROLLING
•Exercising some authority and forming
superior-subordinate relationship throughout
the organization can be established through
controlling.
14. CONTROLLING
•With the presence of authority or control the
individuals will work properly and exhibit better
performance to reach the targets set for them.
•Control system ensures the organizational
efficiency and effectiveness. When Proper system
exists the organization effectively achieves its
objectives.
15. CONTROLLING HAS STEPS
Establishment of standard performance.
Measurement of actual performance.
Comparison of actual performance with the
standards and finding out deviation if any.
Corrective action
16. IMPORTANCE OF CONTROLLING
•Control system acts as an adjustment in
organizational operations.
•It mainly checks whether plans are being
observed and suitable progress towards the
objectives is being made or not, and if
necessary any action to control the deviations.
18. SUMMARY
•If an organization is to run smoothly, there is
need of application of the management
function such as planning, organizing,
directing and coordinating.
•All the above functions have to be applied in a
systemic way to achieve the desired results.
