“A trend is nothing but a general direction in
something tends to move” or “a general
tendency to change.”
“An issue is nothing but some situation or event
that is thought about.”

3. PROBLEMS IN NURSING PROFESSION
The problems of nursing profession were identified by
various earlier health committees constituted by the
Union Government, i.e.
• Bhore committee (1946),
• Shetty committee (1966),
• Kartarsingh committee (1973),
• Bajaj committee (1986), and
• High power committee on Nursing and Nursing
profession (1989).

4. ISSUES IN NURSING PROFESSION
Issues can be classified under following headings:
Nursing services
Nursing education
Nursing administration

5. NURSING ADMINISTRATION
1. Non-involvement of nursing administrators in planning and decision-making
of nursing related issues.
2. No specific power has been assigned to nursing superintendent, but he/she
has been made in-charge of all inventories and linen of the hospital.
3. Nursing superintendent will have no authority to sanction leave to their
subordinates.
4. Lack of knowledge in management of hospital among medical/nursing
administrators.
5. Administrator always depend on the advice of the clerical staff in all matters
including technical aspects.
6. Prevalence of role ambiguity among administrators.

6. 7. Unnecessary interference of non-nursing personnel (Medical-
Clerical) in nursing administrators.
8. No written nursing policies and manuals.
9. No proper job-description of various nursing cadres.
10. No organised staff development programme which includes
orientation, in-service-education, continuing education etc.
11. No special incentives.
12. Inefficiency of nursing councils of state and union to
maintain standards in nursing.

7. RECENT CHALLENGES

• Technology explosion –
 By 2014, electronic medical records will replace
traditional documentation.
 Computer training is must.
• Shortage of nurse – in hospitals as well as academics.

8. TRENDS IN NURSING

• 1940-1946 the 2nd world war.
• military and civil hospitals took place during the war
years.

9. • Auxillary nursing service was established in 1942.
• 1943: Commissioned rank was given to the Indian military
nursing systems.
• In 1943,the school of nursing administration was established
for preparing nurses for administrative functions in military.
• 1941 -46: During the period the state nursing services with
standardized pay scales and terms of services were established
in madras (1944)
• chief nursing superintendent was appointed to act as an
advisor to Director General of Health Services,Govt of India.
• State Nursing Superintendents were also appointed at the state
levels Madras, Bombay ,Bengal,
• Nurses in senior positions were also given gazetted ranks
during this period.
