 FOOT REFLEXOLOGY TREATMENT SESSION
a. Establishing physical contact
b. Locate solar plexus with thumbs
c. Apply pressure during client inhalation and release during exhalation
d. Repeat 3 to 6 times
e. Locate diaphragm line
f. Use walking technique over line to help client relax.
→ Foot can be divided into 6 treatment areas:
 Head
 Chest
 Abdomen
 Pelvic area
 Reproductive organs
 Spinal area.
STEPS:
1. Preliminaries:
 The first step is relaxing the foot
 Does each exercise to both foot.
A. With heels of hands vibrate the foot at the broadest part.
B. Then between the ankles and heels.
STEP 1 STEP 2
C. Grasp all toes, support back of heel and rotate foot several times in one direction and then the other.
D. Hold foot as “D” & flex foot forward & extend it back. Note flexibility.
STEP 3
2
E. Hold foot as in “E” then press quickly with both thumbs.
F. Do the same thing with the fingers on the front of the foot. This spread the toes.
G. Rotate each toe in both directions to check tension.
STEP 4 STEP 5
METHOD OF USING THE THUMB (FORFINGER) FOR COMPRESSION MASSAGE
 Using this technique in an inchworm manner is referred to as working the area.
 Zeroing in on a particular spot is called direct contact.
STEP 6(a)
LEVERAGE:
Place the fingers of the working hand over the fingers of the supporting hand, so that you are pressing the
thumb toward the fingers. This gives better leverage and prevents digging in with your fingers.
STEP 6(b)
3
 FOR PITUARY GLAND:
 Make an imaginary line cross on the big toe.
 Raise your elbow up, and with a corner of the thumb, make a direct contact of the cross.
STEP 7
STEP 8
THROAT, THYROID & THYMUS AREAS:
 Work in the area below the big toes for both feet in the direction of arrows.
STEP 9
4
SHOULDER AREA:
 TECHNIQUE:
 The small toes for both feet as shown.
 Rotate the toe to see if the shoulder is relaxed. Work areas as necessary until the toe can be freely
rotated. STEP:10
THORACIC CAVITY:
 LUNGS & HEART AREA:
 The lungs area on the bottom of the feetis to be worked thoroughly and in a horizontal manner as indicated.
 The heart area is located in center of the lung area on the left foot, and is to be worked in both directions.
STEP 11
 BACK OF THE CHEST (BETWEEN THE SHOULDERBLADES)
 Work with the corner of your thumb against the metatarsal bones between the big toe and second toe.
 This is done on both feet.
STEP 12
5
 CHEST AND BRONCHIAL AREA: (BOTH FEET)
STEP 13 (a)
 FOR BRONCHI:
 With the thumb on the back of foot, use the index finger to do a “milking” or pulling motion between the
metatarsalbones as shown. Start at the base of toes, go up the foot to where the bones join, and then back
again to the toes.
STEP 13 (b)
 FOR CHEST:
 Place one fist on the back of the foot for support.
 With the other hand in fist, use the heel of the hand to do a rolling motion, back and forth across the front
of the foot.
STEP 13(a)
6
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM:
 THE DIAPHRAGM, STOMACH,ESOPHAGUS & PANCREAS:
 Work for diaphragm in both feet.
 Then work the esophagus starting at base of the toes between the 2nd
and 3rd
, moving down toward the
stomach. When you get to point of intersection between the esophagus and diaphragm, make a direct
contact.Ifa person hasa hiatus hernia, pressure may be applied here for severalminutes, or until tenderness
decrease.
 This point and along the diaphragm is also good for hiccoughs.
 The STOMACH is worked on the left foot, then the right, since food enters the stomach on left side and
exists on the right.
 The PANCREAS lies particularly behind the stomach. Therefore, the area to be worked will particularly
over-lap the stomach area, but the massage is deeper.
STEP 14(a)
 THE LIVER, GALL BLADDER & SPLEEN:
 Work the SPLEEN & LIVER area as indicated.
 Make a direct contact to the GALL BLADDER area. Remember that gall bladder is covered by the liver,
so you will apply deeper pressure to this area.
STEP 14(b)
7
 THE SMALL INTESTINES:
 Work the SMALL INTESTINE area back and forth, remembering that it is a long tube which folds back
and forth in the abdominal cavity.
STEP 14(c)
 THE LARGE INTESTINE:
 The LARGE INTESTINE is worked in the same direction in which it functions, i.e, up the Ascending.
(turn where you feelthe ‘bump’ on outside of foot. This is the end of the 5th
metatarsalbone) – work across
the transverse. (when you finish with the right foot bring the feet together and pick up at same spot on left
foot.) – continue the transverse and work down the Descending. Make a curve for the sigmoid, and go
down and out the Rectum.
 STEP 14(d)
THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM:
 Generally work part of the lymphatic system after the large intestine and before the kidneys – for two
reasons:
1. Both the large intestine and kidney reflex areas can be painful and the lymphatic reflexes usually
are not, so it gives the feet rest.
8
2. Because the lymphatic system puts waste into the blood stream and kidneys excrete waste from
the blood.
 Work on the area from behind the ankle bone across the front of the foot as shown.
 Work it at least twice.
 Then massage with the finger pads.
 Since the outside of foot is also for arm, hand and leg, you may want to work in both directions.
STEP 15
GENITO-URINARY SYSTEM:
 URINARY TRACT:
 On the inside of the foot above the heel, you will locate a fleshy or spongy area. This is the reflex for the
BLADDER.
 Work that, coming around to the bottom of the foot.
 Work your way up the URETER reflex being careful to press between , not on, the tendons.
 Your fingers are held on the front of the foot, feeling the 1st
metatarsal bone. When your thumb reaches
that height , turn inward to work the KIDNEY reflex.
 Make a direct contact on the top of that area for the ADRENAL GLAND.
 Since urine flows downward, you will work the area again, starting at the KIDNEY,down the URETER
and out the BLADDER, with a motion that would “push” the urine along.
 Do not overwork this area.
STEP 16
THE REPRODUCTIVE ORGANS:
 If you have already worked the lymphatic reflex across the front of the foot, it is not necessary to repeat it
for the FALLOPIAN TUBE / VAS DEFERENS.
 On the inside of the foot make an imaginary line between the base of ankle and the end of the heel. At the
mid-point of this line is the reflex for the UTERUS & VAGINA / PROSTATE & PENIS. Make direct
contact.
 Do the same on the outside of the foot for the OVARY/ TESTIS.
9
 With the thumb and for finger do a milking motion up from the back of the heel for about 4 inches. This
area contains further reflexes for the UTERUS, PROSTATE, BLADDER & RECTUM.
STEP 17
 RECTUM (HEMORRHOIDS), FEET AND SCIATIC NERVE:
STEP 18
THE SPINAL COLUMN, SPINAL CORD & SPINAL NERVES:
 SHOULDER, ARM, HAND & LEG , ELBOW, HIP & KNEE JOINTS:
 Work with this area for HAND, ARM, LEG, and SHOULDER. (in both feet)
STEP 19
10
 SPINAL COLUMN:
 Start with a direct contact to COCCYX reflex.4
 Work with a deliberate way up the SPINAL COLUMN area as if counting the vertebrae.
 Then start at the top and come down again.
 Go back and forth over areas that were tender.
STEP 20
STEP 21
 After working the spinal column, grasp the foot with both hands close together near the toes.
 The hand nearest the leg is held steady, while the other hand rotates the end of the foot back and forth – as
if rotating the spine. Work down the foot in this way.
 The foot can also be stretch between the two hands, as if stretching the spines. Further foot rotation, flexion
and extension, described in the preliminaries, can also be done.
11
STEP 22
 THE SOLAR PLEXUS:
 A collection of nerve cells in the center of the abdomen. It is important in controlling the functioning of
stomach, liver , kidney and adrenal gland.
 This maneuver is done for RELAXATION. It can be done before and during, and always at the end of each
session.
 One foot is held in each hand ,with the thumb placed on the reflex area for the SOLAR PLEXUS. The
person is instructed that when pressure is applied with your thumb, to breath deeply through nose. When
pressure is release, the exhale. The best way to judge the timing of this is to breath with person. This is 5-
7 times. The foot should feel very relaxed in your hand.
 The pressure on the reflex is firm, but not as deep or as pointed as a direct contact.

Continuing Nursing Education - Foot Reflexology word File

  • 1. 1  FOOT REFLEXOLOGY TREATMENT SESSION a. Establishing physical contact b. Locate solar plexus with thumbs c. Apply pressure during client inhalation and release during exhalation d. Repeat 3 to 6 times e. Locate diaphragm line f. Use walking technique over line to help client relax. → Foot can be divided into 6 treatment areas:  Head  Chest  Abdomen  Pelvic area  Reproductive organs  Spinal area. STEPS: 1. Preliminaries:  The first step is relaxing the foot  Does each exercise to both foot. A. With heels of hands vibrate the foot at the broadest part. B. Then between the ankles and heels. STEP 1 STEP 2 C. Grasp all toes, support back of heel and rotate foot several times in one direction and then the other. D. Hold foot as “D” & flex foot forward & extend it back. Note flexibility. STEP 3
  • 2. 2 E. Hold foot as in “E” then press quickly with both thumbs. F. Do the same thing with the fingers on the front of the foot. This spread the toes. G. Rotate each toe in both directions to check tension. STEP 4 STEP 5 METHOD OF USING THE THUMB (FORFINGER) FOR COMPRESSION MASSAGE  Using this technique in an inchworm manner is referred to as working the area.  Zeroing in on a particular spot is called direct contact. STEP 6(a) LEVERAGE: Place the fingers of the working hand over the fingers of the supporting hand, so that you are pressing the thumb toward the fingers. This gives better leverage and prevents digging in with your fingers. STEP 6(b)
  • 3. 3  FOR PITUARY GLAND:  Make an imaginary line cross on the big toe.  Raise your elbow up, and with a corner of the thumb, make a direct contact of the cross. STEP 7 STEP 8 THROAT, THYROID & THYMUS AREAS:  Work in the area below the big toes for both feet in the direction of arrows. STEP 9
  • 4. 4 SHOULDER AREA:  TECHNIQUE:  The small toes for both feet as shown.  Rotate the toe to see if the shoulder is relaxed. Work areas as necessary until the toe can be freely rotated. STEP:10 THORACIC CAVITY:  LUNGS & HEART AREA:  The lungs area on the bottom of the feetis to be worked thoroughly and in a horizontal manner as indicated.  The heart area is located in center of the lung area on the left foot, and is to be worked in both directions. STEP 11  BACK OF THE CHEST (BETWEEN THE SHOULDERBLADES)  Work with the corner of your thumb against the metatarsal bones between the big toe and second toe.  This is done on both feet. STEP 12
  • 5. 5  CHEST AND BRONCHIAL AREA: (BOTH FEET) STEP 13 (a)  FOR BRONCHI:  With the thumb on the back of foot, use the index finger to do a “milking” or pulling motion between the metatarsalbones as shown. Start at the base of toes, go up the foot to where the bones join, and then back again to the toes. STEP 13 (b)  FOR CHEST:  Place one fist on the back of the foot for support.  With the other hand in fist, use the heel of the hand to do a rolling motion, back and forth across the front of the foot. STEP 13(a)
  • 6. 6 DIGESTIVE SYSTEM:  THE DIAPHRAGM, STOMACH,ESOPHAGUS & PANCREAS:  Work for diaphragm in both feet.  Then work the esophagus starting at base of the toes between the 2nd and 3rd , moving down toward the stomach. When you get to point of intersection between the esophagus and diaphragm, make a direct contact.Ifa person hasa hiatus hernia, pressure may be applied here for severalminutes, or until tenderness decrease.  This point and along the diaphragm is also good for hiccoughs.  The STOMACH is worked on the left foot, then the right, since food enters the stomach on left side and exists on the right.  The PANCREAS lies particularly behind the stomach. Therefore, the area to be worked will particularly over-lap the stomach area, but the massage is deeper. STEP 14(a)  THE LIVER, GALL BLADDER & SPLEEN:  Work the SPLEEN & LIVER area as indicated.  Make a direct contact to the GALL BLADDER area. Remember that gall bladder is covered by the liver, so you will apply deeper pressure to this area. STEP 14(b)
  • 7. 7  THE SMALL INTESTINES:  Work the SMALL INTESTINE area back and forth, remembering that it is a long tube which folds back and forth in the abdominal cavity. STEP 14(c)  THE LARGE INTESTINE:  The LARGE INTESTINE is worked in the same direction in which it functions, i.e, up the Ascending. (turn where you feelthe ‘bump’ on outside of foot. This is the end of the 5th metatarsalbone) – work across the transverse. (when you finish with the right foot bring the feet together and pick up at same spot on left foot.) – continue the transverse and work down the Descending. Make a curve for the sigmoid, and go down and out the Rectum.  STEP 14(d) THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM:  Generally work part of the lymphatic system after the large intestine and before the kidneys – for two reasons: 1. Both the large intestine and kidney reflex areas can be painful and the lymphatic reflexes usually are not, so it gives the feet rest.
  • 8. 8 2. Because the lymphatic system puts waste into the blood stream and kidneys excrete waste from the blood.  Work on the area from behind the ankle bone across the front of the foot as shown.  Work it at least twice.  Then massage with the finger pads.  Since the outside of foot is also for arm, hand and leg, you may want to work in both directions. STEP 15 GENITO-URINARY SYSTEM:  URINARY TRACT:  On the inside of the foot above the heel, you will locate a fleshy or spongy area. This is the reflex for the BLADDER.  Work that, coming around to the bottom of the foot.  Work your way up the URETER reflex being careful to press between , not on, the tendons.  Your fingers are held on the front of the foot, feeling the 1st metatarsal bone. When your thumb reaches that height , turn inward to work the KIDNEY reflex.  Make a direct contact on the top of that area for the ADRENAL GLAND.  Since urine flows downward, you will work the area again, starting at the KIDNEY,down the URETER and out the BLADDER, with a motion that would “push” the urine along.  Do not overwork this area. STEP 16 THE REPRODUCTIVE ORGANS:  If you have already worked the lymphatic reflex across the front of the foot, it is not necessary to repeat it for the FALLOPIAN TUBE / VAS DEFERENS.  On the inside of the foot make an imaginary line between the base of ankle and the end of the heel. At the mid-point of this line is the reflex for the UTERUS & VAGINA / PROSTATE & PENIS. Make direct contact.  Do the same on the outside of the foot for the OVARY/ TESTIS.
  • 9. 9  With the thumb and for finger do a milking motion up from the back of the heel for about 4 inches. This area contains further reflexes for the UTERUS, PROSTATE, BLADDER & RECTUM. STEP 17  RECTUM (HEMORRHOIDS), FEET AND SCIATIC NERVE: STEP 18 THE SPINAL COLUMN, SPINAL CORD & SPINAL NERVES:  SHOULDER, ARM, HAND & LEG , ELBOW, HIP & KNEE JOINTS:  Work with this area for HAND, ARM, LEG, and SHOULDER. (in both feet) STEP 19
  • 10. 10  SPINAL COLUMN:  Start with a direct contact to COCCYX reflex.4  Work with a deliberate way up the SPINAL COLUMN area as if counting the vertebrae.  Then start at the top and come down again.  Go back and forth over areas that were tender. STEP 20 STEP 21  After working the spinal column, grasp the foot with both hands close together near the toes.  The hand nearest the leg is held steady, while the other hand rotates the end of the foot back and forth – as if rotating the spine. Work down the foot in this way.  The foot can also be stretch between the two hands, as if stretching the spines. Further foot rotation, flexion and extension, described in the preliminaries, can also be done.
  • 11. 11 STEP 22  THE SOLAR PLEXUS:  A collection of nerve cells in the center of the abdomen. It is important in controlling the functioning of stomach, liver , kidney and adrenal gland.  This maneuver is done for RELAXATION. It can be done before and during, and always at the end of each session.  One foot is held in each hand ,with the thumb placed on the reflex area for the SOLAR PLEXUS. The person is instructed that when pressure is applied with your thumb, to breath deeply through nose. When pressure is release, the exhale. The best way to judge the timing of this is to breath with person. This is 5- 7 times. The foot should feel very relaxed in your hand.  The pressure on the reflex is firm, but not as deep or as pointed as a direct contact. STEP 23
