Tranquilizers act on the central nervous system and are used to treat mental illnesses involving psychosis or behavioral disorders. They reduce anxiety, fear, tension and agitation. Tranquilizers are classified as either minor tranquilizers, also called anxiolytics, or major tranquilizers, also known as antipsychotics. Major tranquilizers are further divided into first generation and second generation drugs from different classes such as phenothiazines, butyrophenones, thioxanthenes and others.
