Total Physical Response (TPR) is a language teaching method based on theories of structuralism and behaviorism. It focuses on using physical movement in response to verbal commands to help students comprehend language before speaking. In TPR, the imperative tense is used to guide students through language acquisition. The method is based on the idea that listening precedes speaking and that speech emerges spontaneously later, as it does in first language acquisition. The teacher chooses materials and models commands for students to physically act out, engaging the right brain before left brain language processes.
