This document provides an introduction and overview of TOWS analysis. TOWS analysis examines threats and opportunities first, then weaknesses and strengths. It involves creating a matrix with threats and opportunities listed down one side and strengths and weaknesses across the top. Where each intersect, strategic alternatives are identified. There are four types of strategies: SO strategies leverage strengths to maximize opportunities; ST strategies leverage strengths to minimize threats; WO strategies minimize weaknesses by utilizing opportunities; and WT strategies aim to minimize both weaknesses and threats. The advantages of TOWS analysis include generating effective strategic alternatives and providing priorities to address threats.
