This research presents a two-dimensional flood inundation modelling in urbanized areas when some features such as roads, buildings, and fences have great effect on flood propagation. Wadi Qows located in Jeddah City, Saudi Arabia was chosen as case study area because of the flood occurrence of 2009 causing lots of losses either economic or loss of life. The WMS and HEC-RAS program were used for a hydraulic simulation based on channel geometry built by incorporating urban features into DEM using GIS effectively. A resampling method of DEM 90 × 90 m become 10 × 10 m grid cell sizes was conducted to produce a higher resolution DEM suitable for urban flood inundation modelling. The results show that a higher resolution leads to increasing the average flood depth and decreasing the flood extent. Although the change of the grid cell sizes does not affect its elevation values, this approach is helpful to perform flood simulations in urban areas when high resolution DEM availability is limited. This narrated PowerPoint presentation describes a HEC-RAS 2-D unsteady-flow flood model set up for the tidally-influenced Little River in Newburyport and Newbury, Massachusetts. It describes the steps in developing inputs to the HEC-RAS model including using HEC-HMS rainfall-runoff modeling and GIS in developing inputs to HEC-HMS. The HEC-RAS model was calibrated using the Mother's Day flood of May 2006. The HEC-RAS model may be used to evaluate impacts associated with proposed changes in culvert sizes or changing embankment elevations near or at problem flood areas and can also be used to determine the changes in river hydraulics associated with sea level rise and climate change.

6th International Symposium on Geo-information for Disaster Management (Turin) POSTER ABSTRACT Apulia Basin Authority (AdBP) is actually carrying out an advanced and complex study for evaluating flooding areas of downstream reach of Ofanto, one of the most important river in Southern Italy. The performed analysis is strictly related to a reliable definition of the hydraulic risk map in order to plan efficient hazard management actions. Due to the geo-morphological characteristics of the selected river branch – that presents a length of about 36 km from the Roman bridge, close to Canosa city, to the sea outfall –- this activity represents an interesting case study for the contextual use of modern technologies in topographic data management and hydraulic computation. The geometrical model used for the hydraulic simulation was created using input data coming from airborne laser scanning (LIDAR), which generates 1 m cell-size Digital Surface Model (DSM) and Digital Terrain Model (DTM), that were integrated with high-resolution digital orthophotos. The hydraulic simulation was developed adopting a mixed 1D/2D scheme, where one-dimensional model within the levees and two-dimensional model outside were used. Simplified model for estimating friction factor distribution within the floodplain area was adopted.

Due to climate change it is very essential to do hydrological modelling. Reliable models are essential for planning, developmental works, prediction and safety of the population. Hydrological models are used to determine catchment discharge/flow through an efficient way. HEC-HM (Hydrological engineering centre Hydrological modelling system) is one of hydrological modelling tool developed by United States army corps of engineer (USACE) for event as well as for continuous simulations. Models, especially continuous simulations are useful for future predictions of stream flow due to land-use changes or extreme events phenomenon. In this study continuous hydrologic modellingwas carried out using HEC HMS modelling tool. Deficit and Constant Loss methods with Clark transform methods were selected. The calibrated model (period 1986-1988) was validated with data set of the period of 2009-2013. Study concluded that the model recommended and can be used for stated River as decision support tool in the design and operation.

The population and urbanization of Morocco are increasing very rapidly. They have risenin large cities due to heavy immigration rate from rural areas to accessjob opportunities, better education, and better health facilities. Casablanca has the most affected land use changes in Morocco because of the immigration. This paper presents anintegrated study of land use change in this city from 1986 until 2011 using topographic map sheets (1986) and satellite image (2011). The layers of landuse map (1986) were obtainedby digitization technique in ARCGIS 9.3 software. Supervised classification methodology has been employed using maximum likelihood technique in ERDAS IMAGINE (2011) to extract from the satellite image four classes which were categorized into, built-up area, public green spaces, agricultural land and water bodies. The totalarea of each class was estimated by using geometry tools of ArcGISsoftware to compare land use changes between 1986 and 2011.

(Received 23 October 1992; in revisedform 13 July 1993) Abstract-This paper presents a simple representation of traffic on a highway with a single entrance and exit. The representation can be used to predict traffic’s evolution over time and space, including transient phenomena such as the building, propagation, and dissipation of queues. The easy-to-solve difference equations used to predict traffic’s evolution are shown to be the discrete analog of the differential equations arising from a special case of the hydrodynamic model of traffic flow. The proposed method automatically generates appropriate changes in density at locations where the hydrodynamic theory would call for a shockwave; i.e., a jump in density such as those typically seen at the end of every queue. The complex side calculations required by classical methods to keep track of shockwaves are thus eliminated. The paper also shows how the equations can mimic the real-life development of stop-and-go traffic within moving queues. 1. INTRODUCTION Accurate descriptions of highway traffic flow over transportation networks, whether at the planning or operations level, must recognize that the vehicles traveling on any section of the network must be bound for specific destinations. Static traffic assignment models used for transportation planning (see Sheffi, 1985, for example) achieve this goal by describing the flow on a link of the network by its components by final destination; e.g., by specifying a variable yid that represents the amount of flow on link i that is ultimately bound for destination d. Unfortunately, this is much more difficult to do for dynamic network flow problems (with time-dependent origin-destination (O-D) flows) because the functional dependence of the link flows at time t, yid(f), on the collection of all past flows is quite complex. This problem manifests itself both at the planning level, where networks are quite complex, and at the operations level, where networks are simpler, but more detail is sought about the system’s evolution. Although dynamic traffic assignment models -planning level models involving large networks- typically recognize that traffic travels to many destinations, the models are based on simplistic flow relationships that are not perfectly consistent with the conservation laws of traffic. This study attempts to make use of traffic behaviour on the aggregate level to estimate congestion on urban arterial and sub-arterial roads of a city exhibiting heterogeneous traffic conditions by breaking the route into independent segments and approximating the origin-destination based traffic flow behaviour of the segments. The expected travel time in making a trip is modelled against sectional traffic characteristics (flow and speed) at origin and destination points of road segments, and roadway and segment traffic characteristics such as diversion routes are also tried in accounting for travel time. Predicted travel time is then used along with free flow time to determine the state of congestion on the segments using a congestion index (CI). A development of this kind may help in understanding traffic and congestion behaviour practically using easily accessible inputs, limited only to the nodes, and help in improving road network planning and management.

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
