This document describes a touch dimmer circuit built around the IC TT6061A. The circuit allows increasing the light intensity of incandescent lamps in three steps simply by touching a copper plate. It works by using the IC to trigger a triac that controls the lamp brightness based on how many times the plate is touched. Applications of dimmer switches include saving energy by reducing light levels, controlling mood lighting, and extending the life of light bulbs.

Abstract: By simply touching this touch dimmer you can increase the
light intensity of incandescent lamps in three steps.

3. Introduction:
This is a simple touch dimmer circuit made of IC TT6061.
TT 6061 is specifically designed for this purpose. By touching this touch
dimmer you can increase the light intensity of incandescent lamps in three
steps
At first, when mains is ‘on,’ the lamp is ‘off’. When you touch the plate, the
lamp glows dimly. At second touch, the bulb gives medium light. On the
third touch, the bulb is driven fully. Next touch puts off the light off.

Description:
The touch dimmer is built around 8-pin CMOS IC TT6061A specifically
manufactured for touch dimmer switches applications. Since the IC is
highly sensitive, use a long wire to connect the IC to the touch sensor. The
circuit uses minimum external components. For touch plate, you can use a
simple copper plate of 1cm×1cm or even the end of the lead wire. Touch
plate is coupled to the touch detector through 820pF, 2kV capacitors C1,
C2, and C3 connected in series.
Capacitors C1, C2, and C3 connected between touch input pin 4 and touch
plate remove the shock potential from the touch plate, so do not replace
these capacitors with a single capacitor or with a capacitor of a lower
voltage rating.

5. Working:
Initially, when mains switch is ‘on,’ the bulb is ‘off’. Now, if you touch the
touch plate, the bulb glows dimly. On the second touch, the bulb gives
medium light. At the third touch, the bulb is driven fully. Another touch puts
off the light.
Since the IC is highly sensitive, use along wire to connect the IC to the
touch sensor. The circuit uses minimum external components. For touch
plate, you can use a simple copper plate of 1cm×1cm or even the end of
the lead wire. Touch plate is coupled to the touch detector through 820pF,
2kV capacitors C1, C2, and C3 connected in series.
Internally IC TT6061A’s touch signal is connected to the counter/decoder
via a resistor and clock input CK is connected to the counter/decoder via a
frequency generator
The 6.8V power supply is taken directly from mains through resistors R1
and R3, diode D3, capacitor C4, and zener diode and fed to power-input
pin 3 of the IC.
Line frequency signal is taken through R4 at pin 2 of IC TT6061A. At zero
crossing, the triac (BT136) triggers to drive a (50-200) W bulb.
Caution:
1. Use exact rating capacitors with the touch plate.
2. Mains potential exists in the circuit. So, Do not touch any other part of
circuit other than touch plate.
3. Ensure that the touch plate is not live, using a tester before using or
testing the circuit.
4. Do not use a bulb with power rating more than 200 Watts.

6. Applications:
1 - Dimmer Switches Save Energy
When you dim a light, you save up to 98 percent in energy and up to about
10 percent on your energy bill. Dimmer fade your lighting to a level that is
preset. You have total control over how much lighting is used in a room.
When you reduce the lighting wattage, you have less wear and tear on the
lighting which makes the life of the bulb longer.
2 - Lighting Controls
You can control the dimmer light switch with a knob or by sliding the switch
up and down. These days with the more modern dimmer light switches, you
can control the amount of lighting with a remote control. Touch dimmers
give you a change of lighting just by pressing a button. You can set the
mood for any room that has the adjusted dimmer light switched lighting.
You can use dimmer switch lighting in living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms
and breakfast nooks. Just being able to flip a traditional light switch up or
down for on and off does not give you total control over the amount of
lighting that is in the room.
3 - Longevity of Dimmer Light Switches
The light bulbs used last longer when you use a dimmer to keep them lit. If
you dim the lights by at least 25%, you will save approximately 1/5 of the
electricity required. The softer the lamp fade, the longer the lamp lasts. You
can give 3 or 4 years to a lamp that will usually last 5 or 6 months.
4- Dimming Your Fluorescent Lights
You are able to dim your fluorescent lights, but the effect on the room will
be different. Instead of the warm candle light look, a fluorescent bulb’s color
would maintain a cooler look. Dimming a fluorescent bulb will not make the
life of it any longer as it will with an incandescent bulb. Dimming fluorescent
lighting is less expensive and more convenient.
