What Is An Example Of Consumerism In Fight Club
In Fight Club, there are multitudes of examples of the culture industry and its effects
on the masses. As an audience, it can be seen from two different perspectives; the
first is in terms of the Narrator and the second is through Tyler Durden, a second
personality of the narrator who suffers from mental illness. The narrator lives an
empty life and tries to find meaning or purpose through the IKEA cataloguewhile
decorating his home. In turn, Tyler is the exact opposite he doesn t answer to
anybody, he does what he wants, when he wants and doesn t let anything or anyone
stop him. Evidently this is the version of himself that the narrator wants to be, as he
lives vicariously through Tyler, which he is unaware is his own imagination for the...

As an audience, throughout the film it is evident that there is a significant contrast
between the narrator and Tyler as they view many things differently. Just like the
Fight Club and the IKEA furniture, the narrator becomes obsessed with Tyler and
the life he leads. When Tyler is first introduced as a passenger on the airplane, the
narrator is immediately drawn to him in a way that is different than any other
person he has met. He feels a connection with him that he has not felt before, which
is why he calls him when his apartment burns and he loses all of his important
IKEA furniture. Tyler tells him it s just stuff (Fight Club) and the things you own
end up owning you (Fight Club), which completely contradicts everything the
narrator had previously believed about his home and the furniture. Through Tyler,
the narrator starts to lose his need for material objects when Tyler tells him Fuck
off with your sofa units and strine green stripe patterns, I say never be complete, I
say stop being perfect, I say let... let s evolve, let the chips fall where they may (Fight
Club), instead he focuses on the fighting and his friendship with Tyler since he has
finally found something that fills the void in his life and gives it meaning. Though it
may seem abstract that Tyler would fit into this argument, it all comes together at the
end of the film when the audience finds
Skin Film Analysis
Skin an insight of the evolution of skin a sample look at different ways skin may
be interpreted through time and culture; from purpose, beauty, race, sex and age.
The skin wasn t always used as a defining tool of one s self but had a logistic
purpose and reason as to why and how the skin has evolved into what it is today.
As Anthropologist Nina Jablonski explained in the film Skin the skin does have a
practical purpose much like the baboons in the African Savanah who have thick
hairy skin to keep them cool or like researchers have revealed skin can also have a
greater philosophical meaning like the whipping of young women in a small tribe to
show loyalty and bravery. The broad range of the meaning of skin is ever evolving
and valued differently... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Propelling Club Med Back to the Top of Their Game
Since its inception in 1950, Club Med was a leader of its own. However, with the
emergence of other vacation services organizations, Club Med soon lost its unique
edge. Competitors such as Jack Tar and SuperClubs now included their own
versions of Club Med magic an all inclusive price and a dedicated team of staff.
Giraud must now decide how to create a sustainable competitive advantage for
Club Med. He must consider the different aspects which will allow the company to
innovate while keeping in check the industry s structure, culture, service, and
above all keeping the Club Med magic alive. Evaluation of Alternative Solutions To
offer something that no other company can offer is what will propel Club Med
back to the top of their game and re coup both sales and market shares. Several
opportunities exist for both Giraud and Club Med to explore, which includes:
Brand and Positioning: Since the 1970 s, Club Med had a reputation of being the
host resort for swinging singles and sex oriented individuals. As their average
customer profile ages, Club Med should look towards positioning the company to
grow with its main clientele. By re branding and positioning the company as family
oriented, it will attract another market segment that other companies have not
reached. In addition to positioning itself as family oriented, Club Med should also
look towards positioning the brand to be more upscale and luxurious. This will
allow it to compete with Jack Tar s more
How Did Hitler Use Propaganda During Ww2
Wartime propaganda has been a major influence in most, if not all, the wars.
Propaganda was a powerful weapon in war. It was used in the time of war in many
ways. It was utilized to dehumanize and create hatred toward an enemy by creating
a false image in the mind of the soldiers and citizens, and to hold power for a leader
or dictator. Propaganda had a major impact during WWI and WWII. Propaganda
was major to the Nazis ability to seize and hold power in Germany under Adolf
Hitler. Adolf Hitler launched a heavy wave of propaganda to hold his political power
in Germany, which included the elimination of other political parties, an invasion of
neighboring countries, and the violent persecution and genocide of Jews. Joseph

Al Capone And His Life Of Crime And Villainy
Al CaponeAl Capone is known for his murders, gambling, and prostitution. He
would even smash people s skulls open by hitting them on the side of the head with
a bat! His parents would have never known that he would become the lead gangster
of the prohibition era. What made him turn to his life of crime and villainy? He was
just a normal schoolboy. Maybe it was his desire to support his family. Possibly it
was meeting Johnny Torrio, that changed his perspective on crime. Or maybe it was
both.
Al Capone s real name is Alphonse Gabriel Capone. He was an Italian immigrant.
His father was Gabriel Capone and his mother was Teresa Capone. He lived in just
a little more than a slum. He went to a Catholic school that did not tolerate
violence and scarred the susceptible kid. He was later expelled at the age of 14 for
hitting a female teacher. He later met Johnny Torrio which could have been the
greatest influence in his life. Johnny Torrio was a key figure to Al Capone . Later Al
Capone joined Torrio s James Street Boys gang.
He later stopped the gang life and settled down and married middle class Irish girl
Mae Coughlin and worked as a bookkeeper. He was soon to return to his old job
with Torrio in Chicago. His father s death affected him greatly. His reputation was
growing a lot at this point. He would never go anywhere without two bodyguards.
He would even be smashed by bodyguards when in the car. Al Capone s reputation
grew a lot, but how

Analysis Of Homer s The Iliad
In Homer s The Iliad, women can often be overshadowed by the strong male
warriors that dominate the epic poem. However, many women in The Iliad are
central to the plot; without these women the poem would have a drastically
different story. The influence of women in The Iliad varies from woman to woman,
usually having some effect on the plot, but the extent of their involvement is
typically dependent on their status in society. However, even when a woman is in a
position of great power, she is still expected to bow to the will of others. Chryseis
and Briseis, although treated as property and spoils of war, are the impetus for the
actions of Achillesand Agamemnonearly in the poem. It is due to the kidnapping of
Chryseis that Apollo sends a plague upon the Achaians. Because Agamemnon is
forced to give Chryseis back to her father, he starts a quarrel with Achilles. Eventually
this quarrel leads to Agamemnon s demand that he get Achilles s prize Briseis as a
reimbursement for Chryseis. It is because of this that Achilles abandons the Achaian
army and asks Zeus to favor the Trojans instead (Book 1). Although Chryseis and
Briseis only indirectly cause this, without them it is unlikely that such a quarrel
would have arisen and therefore unlikely that Zeus would attempt to aid the Trojans.
Although the Achaian men see them as property and believe their lives have no
serious importance, they are the reason that the Trojans could potentially overtake the
Achaians. One of the most

Pharmacy At Rainer s Pharmacy
As a pharmacy technician at Rainer s Pharmacy, in Jeannette, Pennsylvania. I have
learned what types of people visit a pharmacy. At the pharmacy, we deliver
medication and groceries within two hours of the pharmacy. The pharmacy is made
up of three sections: retail, hospice, and the laboratory. I work in the retail and
hospice section; I have met the diabetic hero, the storytellers, and the narc eater. The
diabetic hero is the scariest. From in the pharmacyyou can hear him pull into the
parking lot;his car is rusted from the back left wheel to the front right wheel. The
car sounds like it has not been inspected for years. It clanks and bangs and leaves a
trail of smoke behind it. He puts the car in park then comes in and out before anyone

There is two types within the pharmacy:the retail and the hospice. The retail narc
eater are mean and usually have an egotistic attitude. She always has a scowl on
her face. Her look is distinct she has on dirty sweatpants and a t shirt with holes in
the armpit or around the neck. She comes in screaming you shorted me pills,
where the fuck is the rest of my medicine That is very unlikely, because each c2
and c3 narcotics get placed in a bubble sheet with the set amount of pills counted
out for the dosage. If she is not complaining about not having enough medicine, she
wants to fill the prescription too early and she doesn t understand why the
pharmacy can not fill it. Her insurance will not cover it unless she follows the
correct dosage. She tries to pay for the prescription without insurance but the price
can be a few hundred and she responds with, you can shove the money up your ass.
The hospice narc eaters are worse than the retail. These patients are terminally ill and
they still want to get that high or they want to sell their narcotics. For example,
patient Sara Lee gets daily narcotics with only one day s worth, because her children
will take her medicine and sell it. This causes that no one else can sign the manifest
saying that the patient received the medication. This can only help so much. The
pharmacy gets multiple calls saying that patient s children is selling the medication
right off the front porch.
The Bio Ecological Theory Created By Bronfenbrenner
Throughout the world there are many homeless individuals who are in need of
help. Many of these people have trouble finding a job or a way to help themselves
get stable. Not a lot of the homeless know how to handle money or illnesses they
have developed. Many homeless also suffer from addictions and are in need of
rehabilitation programs. The cause of these illnesses or drug problems can be
related to the fact that when growing up they suffered from different life changes
and expectations within the bio ecological theory or context. For my Service
Learning Project I have implemented a project that I believe will help the homeless
community with their second chance. As we grow up we associate ourselves with
different people and environments no matter how old we are or get we still see
different people and different environments. The bio ecological theory created by
Bronfenbrenner, which explains just that with contexts of development. With the
contexts of development there are the biological, immediate, socioeconomic, and
cultural contexts. All of these contexts play a role in whether or not your life heads
in a good or bad path. In every context there is a different association from people
and the environment such as cultural context which can provide the belief in society
that education is important.(Boyd, 2015) However, the belief that education is
important can be downgraded in the socioeconomic context if a family does not have
the ability to send their child to a
Jar Binks And Stormtroopers In Star Wars
Star Wars is an American sci fi based film series, created by George Lucas. It
depicts the adventures and stories of various characters a long time ago in a galaxy
far far away . The creator, George Lucas, based this series off of many of the
historical events that took place over the centuries on this planet. And evidently,
many of the characters in this film series relate to leaders, rulers, and other significant
people from the real world. One of these many similarities is the relationship between
Hitler, the Nazi party, and the Sith, Darth Sidious and Darth Vader, as they both strive
for absolutism. Another clear demonstration of the similarity is the usage of Jar Jar
Binks and stormtroopers, comparing to the 19th century African American... Show

Palpatine also takes advantage of the unstable Republic, and seizes the opportunity to
become the chancellor during Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. The next
thing they did was attain power by using emergency powers. For Palpatine, that
chance came at the beginning of the Clone War, seen in Star Wars: Episode II
Attack of the Clones. In that story, Jar Jar Binks proposed that Palpatine should be
granted emergency powers until the Separatist crisis had passed. Also in reaction
to a crisis, Hitler seized the opportunity to take emergency powers after the
Reichstag fire of 1933. Following a decree from Hitler, the Reichstag and
Reichsrat both passed what is known as the Enabling Act, effectively giving the
chancellor the power to enact laws without those legislative bodies (Horton, 1). In
both cases, these newly empowered chancellors were able to lead their people to
war using a secret army each had been building. For Palpatine, that army was a
clone army, which he created in secret many years before the beginning of the
Clone Wars. In Germany, the secret task began years before Hitler became
chancellor. As a result of the treaty of Versailles in 1919, Germany was banned from
building weapons of war, and etc.
The Beginning Of Photography In The 1820 s
The beginning of photography was the beginning of one of the greatest technologies.
The possibility of taking a moment and saving it forever is spectacular. Photography
has been invented by many different people and many cultures but the first one to
succeed with a photograph was NicГ©phore NiГ©pce in the 1820 s. Even though it
wasn t like the photographywe know today and it took several days of light exposure
and the picture wasnt very clear, it was still a photograph. He was the first one to have
a successful picture even though many attempted such as Thomas Wedgwood. The
difference between his picture and NicГ©phore NiГ©pce and Thomas was that
Thomas used silver nitrate while Nicephore used silver chloride. The technology of a

Hotel Chain Of Hotels And Resorts
1Introduction
Marriott group of hotels and resorts is an International leader in hotel Industry
owning more than 3700 properties making it one of the broadest range of brand
portfolio holders in the world. Marriott chain of hotels was founded by Mr. J.
Williard Marriott in the year 1950 when he started with two motels. The first motel
was established as an airport motel near Washington and served as a quality Inn
while the second motel was set up near the Twin Bridges a few years later. The
second motel gave Marriott the much desired brand name and Marriott took off one
of the most successful hotel chains and never looked back.
2Context and Research Rationale
The research problem is based on the study of green or environmentally friendly
strategies adopted by one of the top hotels in UK Marriott hotel, Regents park London
and whether such strategies have an effect on some intangible variables of marketing
such as guest behaviour and guest satisfaction or loyalty.
The answer to why is this a research problem is because hotels usually have positive
attitude towards green strategies but they do not see it as a viable marketing strategy,
which impacts their core competency in the business. Most of the big organisations
follow green strategy to play it safe rather than using it as an effective guest retention
strategy. There is a gap in the research done towards identifying the relationship
between adopting green strategy and its impact on business growth factors such as

Plea Bargaining Pros And Cons
What is Plea Bargaining? Plea Bargaining is the pre trial arrangement, which happens
in a criminal methodology. Amid this system, the respondent and has his lawyer sits
on one side, and the prosecutor is on the other. The litigant either consents to argue
blameworthy or no challenge to a wrongdoing. Another component for plea
bargaining would likewise be because the respondent uncovers data, for example, area
of stolen merchandise, names of others taking part in the wrongdoing or affirmation
of different crimes, for example, a series of robberies. Consequently, a decrease in
charges, or rejection of a few charges, this must be endorsed by the judge, before
tolerating can occur. On the off chance that the judge does not concur, at that... Show

Still sometimes, prosecutors might be persuaded that they have the correct
respondent and a totally precise charge with respect to what crime(s) he or she
carried out, but secure a conviction might be flawed. This obviously is valuable for
the two sides to mastermind a determination of the issue without either side taking the
risk that the body of evidence may conflict with them if it somehow managed to go to
trial.
It was likewise demonstrated in 1998, which 92 percent of the cases exhibited were
returned by Manhattan terrific juries. Measurement appears to help pundits claims
that the fantastic jury is minimal more than an elastic stamp...The lion s share of
postulations cases are settled through request assertions; less than 10 percent really
get to trial, and of those, the Manhattan District Attorney s Office guarantees a
conviction rate of 75 to 80 percent (Berger 31).
In spite of the fact that request bartering might be valuable, there are a few people
that may feel that there are issues related with it. Steven Silberblatt states, to be
deliberate inside the significance of the Fifth Amendment an announcement by a
criminal respondent must be a result of through and through freedom, unrestricted by
dangers or guarantees.
Pressure of any sort, regardless of whether physical or mental is
prohibited...(Silberblatt). This being the situation, why is the Criminal Justice

The Constitution And The American Constitution
When our founding fathers decided to separate from England, it was understood that
they would have to form their own government. Their first official form of
government failed, but they learned from their mistakes and promptly followed up by
making quite possibly the most successful constitution ever in 1776. To ensure that
American citizens would enjoy their new freedom, our founders kept in mind what
John Locke had said in his An Essay Concerning Human Understanding life, liberty,
and property, by coining life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness into the final draft
of the constitution. The constitution is important because it exists to protect the
rights of all citizens, and has no legitimate power to deprive any citizen or... Show

Compared to the United States 4,543 worded constitution, Texas constitution has
nearly twenty times more words (87,000) (Collier). The national constitution has
never been replaced; however, it has been amended twenty seven times. Texas s
constitution has been replaced a total number of 5 times due to how detailed it is.
Depending on the era, a constitution may have certain rules which as time
progresses become more hurtful to its constituents. Only a century ago, women and
people of color had little to no rights as a human being. It took America, Land of
the free , a little more than a century to allow women to vote. It is obvious that the
ability to amend a constitution is a valuable one. The issue in Texas is that it has had
a unique history and vast spread of land; therefore, it s constitution is quite detailed.
Texas was once its own republic, it was one of the later states to be admitted to the
United States, and that it occupies so much land that counties within its lines often
differ drastically. Texas first constitution was made in 1836, when it stood as a
country, there were no lower units of government, free African Americanpeople must
have had permission by the Texas legislature to reside in the state, priests could not
hold office (corruption in Mexico), slavery was legalized, and slaves could not be
freed without permission from the legislature. Those
Impact Of Globalization On The Automobile Industry
Eli Vaye
BADM 360
S02
Globalization is a key factor driving change and innovation in multiple industries. The
expansion of borders, products, ideologies, and companies has created a new global
market and force companies to expand their horizon beyond domestic consumers. An
industry Globalization has had a dramatic impact on is the automobile industry. The
dynamics of the automobile industry has expanded largely from a domestic industry
to a completely global industry in which multiple companies have multiple
manufacturing plants in different countries. The automobile industry has been so
globalized that now companies export automobiles that are not domestically created.
To understand the impact of globalization on the automobile industry we must first
examine all aspects of the industry and globalization. First an examination of the
factors that contributed to Globalization within the market place. According to an
article by economichelps.org a key From 1970, there was a rapid adoption of the
steel transport container. This reduced the costs of inter modal transport making trade
cheaper and more efficient. Due to the cheaper and more efficient trade, markets in
other countries became more appealing. The second contributor to globalization in
the market place was the growth of multinational companies with a global presence in
many different economies. These multinational companies started a trend and created
a blueprint for many other companies to follow. Adding to the

The study is relevant to nursing in that its questions focus on the Aboriginal woman

among First Nations individuals (Oster et al., 2014) alluded to the urgency of
exploring effective care options for pregnant Aboriginal women with diabetes in
order to mitigate the growing epidemic (p. 1469). The qualitative studies used were
also significant as they identified a disconnect between traditional and Western
views to be explored and bridged in attempt to deliver effective Type two diabetes
health care to First Nations people (Oster et al, 2014). Referencing quantitative and
qualitative studies to demonstrate the importance of identifying culturally appropriate

Fringe Within The Hippie Movement
Fringe is a trend that has been present in several decades, as early as the Native
Americans. With its rich history and it reoccurrence in several decades, there will
be more focus on fringe within the Hippie Movement. Fringe first appeared within
the Native American culture, and was used as a functional detail to allow the
garment to shed rain and dry faster, as well as for the jackets warmth and durability.
These jackets were known as buckskins and made from buckskin, which is soft suede
leather from the hide of deer. They would occasionally decorate it with beads to make
it more pleasing to the eye, and individual. Cowboys began to wear buckskins as
well, thanks to their practicality. Cowboys would also be able to rip off a piece of

These decades are renown for the Hippie Movement , a counter cultural movement
that rejected many mainstream American mores. They generated from the Beat
Movement, which when died down and the generation gradually drifted from New
York, reassembling in San Francisco many youngsters wanted to be like these open
minded people The word Hippie originates from the word Hip , which is what the
older Beat Generation called these youngsters which were trying to impersonate
them and trying to be hip . Hippies then became the bigger movement and fought
for several political issues. They had a massive opposition the United States
involvement in the Vietnam War which started in 1955 and ended in 1975. It was a
war which South Vietnam was fighting for its independence from North Vietnam.
Other Communist countries such as the Soviet Union and China supported the
North whereas the US and other anti communist countries supported the South.
This led to a big Draft of men which was done by birthdates in a lottery type way.
Most men drafted were men from poor and working class families. In fact,
American forces included twenty five percent poor and fifty five percent working
class. 2, 709, 918 Americans served in uniform in Vietnam, about 7,500 of these
were women. 61% of those killed were under the age of 21. The Hippies fought
against America s involvement; creating the famous anti war slogan, Make love, not
war . They would

Running head: ETHICAL STANDARDS EXAM12 Ethical Standards for Mental
Health Service Providers Final Exam Alanna Sampson Yorkville University Question
1 Introducing the limits of confidentiality in simple language that a client can
understand is the first step in establishing the therapeutic relationship. ?Confidently
should be explained to all potential clients with the general understanding that any
information gained from the counseling relationship is kept confidential. They
must also share that there are limitations when it comes to safety concerns.
Examples of these limitations would be if the professional has a concern that the
clients are at a risk of harming themself, someone else, or if they are posing a risk
to the counselor. There are additional reasons why a counselor will have to break
confidentiality in cases when there is a confession that is ordered by the court or
requested by the client. They may also need to release records in a situation where a
client has filed a complaint towards their counselor (Martin, Shepard Lehr, 2015).
Working within the confines of consulting or private practice the Canadian
Counseling and Psychotherapy Association Standards of Practice (2015) must be
followed. The counselor who is providing the third party service should have a clear
understanding as to their role, the relationship with each party, the possible uses of
any information accumulated, and any limits of confidentiality (2015). More
The Similarities Between The Poetry Of Walt Whitman

Abstract: Walt Whitman and Puran Singh are the two great poets belonging to two

from each other in many ways yet one finds a cord of identity both thematic and

This is because mysticism dose not have the same meaning for all readers or critics.
F.C. Happold s statement is relevant here. He says: To some it (mysticism) is simply
a type of confused, irrational thinking. In the popular mind it is associated with
spiritualism ad clairvoyance, with hypnotism and even with occultism and magic.....
To some it is bound up with visions and revelations. Others use it as a synonym for
other worldliness...... Some would limit its use to that rare state of consciousness
which is found in the contemplative saints
How Does Wang Lung Change In The Good Earth
Throughout The Good Earth, Wang Lung s life changes drastically, but his
hardworking nature and severe self consciousness does not change. Wang Lung s
diligence and perseverance towards his land and dream of success definitely paid
off because in the end he was able to live in comfort. While his greed for a higher
social standing did result in many bad decisions, it made Wang Lung who he is.
Whether good or bad individually, his two constant traits helped Wang Lung achieve
his dream. Wang Lung s positive trait that stayed with him was his determination and
hard working nature. These traits must have come from his time tending the land due
to its tedious but rewarding work. It s obvious that Wang Lung s positive personalities
come from the land because he learns lessons and good qualities through hard work.
These qualities are proven many times throughout the book, but some major
situations include when he didn t want his familyto steal even when they were forced
to beg and live in unknown conditions. This shows that he doesn t want them to

Starting as a poor farmer to a well respected and wealthy man, he remains
extremely self conscious and greedy for more recognition. While these traits fed
his determination which led to his great position in the village. His self awareness
is a recurring topic in the novel as There are many occurrences where Wang Lung
is looked down upon. An example would be when he is made fun of for being
illiterate at the grain market. In return, Wang Lung decides to take his sons out of
the farm and become educated at a school. This shows Wang Lung s determination
to become respected since being educated is a sign of higher status and wealth.
Wang Lung s greed for respect and wealth is one of the main themes of The Good
Earth as his hunger for a higher social standing changes him and his
Pros And Cons Of False Confessions
People know that false confessions are possible, however, most do not understand
the severity. 66% of people said that if a person signed a confession, they were most
likely guilty (Henkel, Coffman, Dailey, 2008). Only 11% disagreed that a person
might confess to a crime they did not commit. Furthermore, only 42% of participants
said that the police might lie about the police having evidence. Henkel, Coffman, and
Dailey report an overwhelming majority of the participants claimed that they would
never confess during an interrogation. What may lead to a false confession? One
major factor is not understanding Miranda rights. Adults may have some difficulty
understanding and appreciating their Miranda rights, but have a general idea of
their rights. Conversely, juveniles have a much more difficult time comprehending
their rights. The current standard for competency is a having a basic
understanding of Miranda rights (Grisso et al., 2003). However, Viljoen, Zapf, and
Roesch (2007) found that 58% of defendants ages 11 13, 33.3% of defendants ages
14 15, and 7.8% of defendants ages 16 17 did not meet this standard. Moreover, if
the defendant must also appreciate the rights, 78% of defendants ages 11 13, 62.7%
of defendants ages 14 15, and 35.3% of defendants ages 16 17 did not meet these
standards. Comprehension of Miranda rights is critical, as one may falsely confess if
they do not understand and utilize their rights. Age also changes how the juvenile
responds to the
The Idea Of Art By Dorothy Allison
The idea of art being a unique interpretation of what an artist s feels towards a
particular thing has always been a given when talking about art. However, where
is the line drawn on what art truly is and what it means to its audience? To do this,
the idea of what art means must be applied to the idea of what art is. In Dorothy
Allison s This is Our World, the author touches on points of what art is and what it
means to its viewers. These points and supporting stories point to the idea that art
is subjective, personal, and provocative. This allows Allison to draw her
conclusion that arts purpose is to depict the deeper meaning into situations and
incidents that occur in our world. In Dorothy Allison s journal, one can see how
the author effectively conveys the ideas of art being personal and subjective, but
fails at detailing how art can be subjective. One idea that Allison points to
throughout her essay is that art is subjective, stating that every person sees art
differently. While doing this she adds her ideas of what art should be, indicating
that art is meant to tell a story and tell the reality of a situation. For example, Allison
references a memory of her friend Jackie criticizing her black and white photos;
which in Allison eyes captures the stories of the people within them, making it art
(Allison). In this moment one can see how one form of art can be seen as nothing
more than a common object depending on perception. Another example of this is how

The Peculiar History Of Foot Binding
Foot binding is the custom of applying painfully tight binding to the feet of young
girls to prevent further growth. This harsh practice belonged to the unique Chinese
culture. Foot binding originated with upper class dancers and then spread to the Song
Dynasty. In the 12th century, foot binding became more and more popular amongst
Chinese women. From there, it eventually spread to many other dynasties and
classes. By the mid 17th century, every girl who married had bound feet. The foot
binding practice lasted roughly until the 20th century ( Foot Binding ). Although it is
a sign of beauty and worth, foot binding is an act of abuse towards Chinese females
because society pressures them to do so.
Many various stories are told about how the foot binding process came to be. The
most common story is about an emperor s courtesan who was dancing barefoot on a
platform covered in lotus flower designs and pearls. The emperor, Xiao Baojuan,
thought that her delicate feet were beautiful and then expressed respect and
appreciation towards her ( The Peculiar History of Foot Binding ). The name of the
3in shoes, lotuses, might have emerged from the lotus flower design. Ever since then,
many maidens and young girls have joined in on this practice in sight of having high
worth and beauty . ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Having small feet resembled beauty, worth, high status, respect, and had advantages
towards marriage. Many women came to the conclusion that if you didn t have small

Jesse Hawley designed a Canal from The eastern shores of Lake Erie to Albany on
the Hudson River. Unfortunately Jesse ended up in debtor s prison as he became
bankrupt trying to market his Canal design (New York State, ND) . This however,
did not stop him, in 1807 he spent his time in debtor s prison creating documents to
describing his plan in details, estimate cost and project benefits. These plans were
presented in Washington by Joshua Forman to gain federal support and the plan was
denied (New York State, ND). One of the famous quotes made by Thomas Jefferson
during the proposal was a little short of madness indicating that they did not feel it

Analysis Of The Ecological Revolution By John Bellamy
Foster
In The Ecological Revolution, John Bellamy Foster argues that we are currently
undergoing an economic crisis. In addition, he explains that this economic crisis is
fixed in the nature of the dominant economic system around the world. According to
Foster, this economic crisis was caused by the mode of production in the capitalist
system and human activity. Due to this crisis, Foster argues that in order for the
planet to survive, the development of an ecological revolution is crucial. In other
words, a substantial change in the relationship of humanity to the earth has to be
established. Throughout the book, Foster emphasizes the fact that because we are in
an economic crisis such as climate conflicts, little time is left for change to occur....

In particular, Foster explains that humans and their activities does influence the
quality of the physical environment. Human activities are creating environmental
changes that are affecting the extinction of species and overall condition of the
environment. Specifically, Foster explains that human activities such as using coal
fired plants in factories is known to be serious industrial and technological danger to
the environment. In addition, human activities in regards to technological use has
created changes in climate, rapid weakening of the ocean s bounty, desertification,
deforestation, air pollution, water shortages, soil degradation, and a chronic food
crisis. All of these factors have created major problems on the planet and have
threatened the life of individuals on earth. Due to these problems, Foster emphasizes
the need for an ecological revolution as a means to improve and make peace with the
planet. Additionally, Foster argues that human activities such as the use of specific
chemicals fluids are extremely toxic and therefore, affecting the surface area. In
addition, hazardous human activities are destroying rock formation and increasing
the number of earthquakes worldwide.

The French Revolutionary wanted all the foreign countries to have the same

of all executions during the Reign of Terror occur in June and July (Doc A). I think
this is when everyone started to die because everyone was being sentenced for saying
bad things about the government. Also, in Document B it states, in August 1792, an
80,000 man army marched into France. (Doc B) The army consisted of half Austrians
and half Prussians. They were going against France because they were frightened that
the revolution would spread to their countries. Due to this France declared war and
the French army unfortunately won the famous Battle of Valmy. While fighting in
war they had three things on their mind which were, to protect the new government at

borders; and to punish the French Г©migrГ©s. The French Г©migrГ©s were people,
mostly nobles and/or aristocrats who fled during the Revolution between 1789

Groggy faces slowly made appearances as the heavenly aroma of bacon and waffles

colorful rays of light poured through the stained glass window as small groups

Female Role Portrayals Not Matching The Public
Expectations
There have been many ethical discussions about female role portrayals not
matching the public expectations i.e. the female characteristics been narrowly
described and disapprovingly presented in a stereotypical manner such as not
intelligent, fragile, irrational, decorative, submissive and subservient to men
(Courtney, AE Lockeretz, SW 1971; Venkatesan Losco 1975; Belkaoui Belkaoui,
1976; Goffman 1979; Blackwood 1983; Bretl Cantor 1988; Jolliffe 1989; Luebke
1989; Kang, EU 1997; Acevedo, CR et al. 2006). But due to Women s movement, few

But somehow, the recent studies showed the good looking female endorsers are
employed effectively, strictly matching to the product type (Lin Yeh 2009).
However, Shields (1997 cited in Carpenter Edison p.7) have argued that These
messages are used to sell everything from cosmetics to cars to beverages, provide a
prescription for how women should look and be looked at, how they should feel, and
how they are expected to act.
Furthermore specialists on feminist movements also debate that previously advertising
illustrations and expressions of female parts were more of solid signs of
objectification and representative of male desire where women were appeared to
be more controlled than men under the societal expectations (Dvir et al., 1995;
Rayburn et al., 1999 cited in Lin Yeh 2009). But few experts propose that the
modern role depictions are neither excessively prevalent nor necessarily archetypal
of typical feminine roles (Courtney and Sarah 1971; Whipple and Courtney, 1985;
Zhou and Chen, 1997 cited in Lin Yeh 2009).
Even today, the recent studies suggest that advertisements do not reflect the
contemporary gender roles and advertisers still incorporate clichГ©d images that no
longer exist (Zotos Tsichla 2014). There has been a gap to understand whether this
way of representation is due to cultural effects and the role of social foundations that
continue to diffuse non comparable attitudes and hierarchical structures in the

The Panopticon
What is the definition of privacy? According to Merriam Webster, it is the quality or
state of being apart from company or observation or the freedom from unauthorized
intrusion. This definition implies that one has the ability to isolate onself or even
information about onself, and is thus able to express oneself freely and secretly.
While privacy and what is considered private differs across cultures and societal
norms, the common themes remain. When an individual deems something private ,
this usually suggests that this object in particular is intrinsically special or sensitive
for him or herself. With the emergence of 21st century technologies (such as

The following thesis adopts a case study methodology, interrogating the nature of the
Saudi state in response to the specific event of the Grand Mosque takeover .
Through a multifaceted analytical narrative, this paper will study the nature of the
Saudi Wahhabi alliance, focusing on the way in which this symbiotic relationship
enabled wide reaching social control during and after the mosque insurgency.
Literature on the Grand Mosque takeover has generally limited the event s
significance to a mere illustration of the al Saud s instrumentalisation of religion for
the purpose of preserving legitimacy . This thesis aims to extend this understanding,
by applying a comprehensive social theory framework to the siege. By employing
Ian Hurd s three tiered framework for social compliance, this thesis will

tried to relay the story of this time, instead he has attempted to convey the legend of
Gallipoli through the Australian s feelings towards the event using pre existing
myths to portray this tragedy of war. Gallipoli was directed by Peter Weir, an
Australian filmdirector. After playing the leading role in the Australian New Wave
cinema with his films such as Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Last Wave and Gallipoli,
Weir directed a diverse group of American and International films many on them
major box office hits including the Academy Award nominees. (http:/

demonstrates the beginning of the ANZAC tradition, a very important historical
event in Australian history.
The movie Gallipoli displays the strength, willpower and the drive that Australian s

Kurt Vonnegut Essay
Kurt Vonnegut Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. is a contemporary American author whose works
have been described by Richard Giannone as comic masks covering the tragic farce
that is our contemporary life (Draper, 3784). Vonnegut s life has had a number of
significant influences on his works. Influences from his personal philosophy, his life
and experiences, and his family are evident elements in his works. Among his comic
masks are three novels: Cat s Cradle, The Sirens of Titan, and God Bless You, Mr.
Rosewater. Throughout these novels, elements such as attitude, detail, narrative
technique, setting, and theme can be viewed with more understanding when related to
certain aspects of his life. These correlations are best examined in terms of each...

. . [an] indifferent universe, [and] regards human existence as unexplainable
(Bookshelf 94). Before the novel even starts, just below the dedication, he declares,
Nothing in this book is true. Live by the foma [harmless untruths] that make you
brave and kind and healthy and happy (Vonnegut, Cradle). Vonnegut carries this
concept all through the story, that the universe is meaningless and each person must
exist for oneself. He even goes to the extent of inventing a religion, Bokononism, with
which humans attempt to make some sense of everything, while realizing that
everything is nonsensical.
Vonnegut s existential philosophy also takes the form of a religion in The Sirens
of Titan. The Church of God the Utterly Indifferent is established, on the principle
that puny man can do nothing at all to help or please God Almighty, and Luck is
not the hand of God (Vonnegut, Sirens, 180). Toward the end of the story, two
existential ideas are developed: first that human life is incomprehensible (in this
case controlled by aliens from another planet for a trivial purpose), and second that
people must make a meaning for life on their own. When one character states, The
worst thing that could possibly happen. . . would be to not be used for anything by
anybody, Vonnegut is suggesting that a good meaning for life might simply be to be
Humans and Their Ability to Make Mistakes
Humans And Their Ability To Make Mistakes
In today s pop culture, there is one very popular view of the future.
All humans will be free to do as they wish, because robots and computers will work
for us. Computers are viewed as the ideal slaves. They work non stop, never
complain, and above all, never make mistakes. It is often said that computers don t
make mistakes, that it is the person using the computer who commits errors.
What is it that makes humans err, but not computers? I will prove that it is simply the
way humans are built that makes us commit errors. Unlike computers, built of
mechanical or electronic parts, humans are made of organic matter and nerve
pathways. These same pathways, with the help of the brain are ... Show more content

The reason he committed errors was simply that he was doing an action faster that
his brain and eyes could handle with 100% accuracy. It seems that our brains can
compute complex operations that allow us to drive a car through terrible weather
conditions, at night, but all these operations cannot be accomplished within too short
a time limit. So far, we have discussed the speed at which the brain can compute
operations without error. We must consider other factors which can also lead to
mistakes. To explain other types of error, I will use a terminology developed and
used by the philosopher Bertrand Russell. He identifies something called sense data.
Sense data is the data received by our senses from the object being
sensed . For instance, if a person is looking at a red apple, the shape and color and all
other aspects of this apple are received in the form of sense data.
In the case of the man adding up the numbers, he mistook a 7 for a 1. What really
happened is that his senses misidentified the number. The sense data was received by
his eyes, which then converted this information into an electrical signal to be sent to
the brain for analysis. There are thus two possibilities.
Either the eyes did not transform the signal of the 7 properly, or the brain
misunderstood the signal received from the eyes. In both cases, the sense data was
analyzed incorrectly, leading to an error in the final calculation. Some skeptics might
criticize my position by
The Lightning Thief Book Report
Evaluating Good Literature
The Percy Jackson series has been a very well written novel and a New York
favorite also. The Lightning Thief is over how the Greek Gods had children with
women and created half bloods. During the summer time, these half human people
will attend to a camp named Camp Half Blood. While attending camp, Percy and
all of his friends draw closer together and are able to train using their given powers.
The Lightning Thief is about Percy first year of attending the camp was; he had no
clue what to think once he walked through the gates. While attending camp for all
who attend only some will be assigned a quest to serve on or to at least to tag along
on.
The reason to why out of his life Percy is beginning camp now is due to no one
being able to keep him safe from mythical monsters. Percy was losing his safety due
to someone blaming him for stealing Zeus s Lightning bolt. ... Show more content on

When you give something a random name or a short name, most of the time people
will not even look at the book if it does not pop out. Even though the book that they
passed up may have actually been a decent one to read after all. When the author had
not given his story, an interesting title he will tend to lose many readers. Rick Riordan
found that by setting your main event as the title that maybe it would draw people
into reading his book.
The information in the book deals a lot with the Mythical Greek Gods. The author
has provided you with a series of book to provide you some information about the
Gods. When reading this story you will learn about the Greek Gods. Finding out
all of this in a story is a helpful way in learning. Readers like to learn about new
information and ancient history in a fun and different way. These books lead up to
the facts written about the Greek Gods. When it talks about Zeus cutting all of them

My Reflection In Writing
There I heard it; the final whistle blew for full time. We worked so hard all season
long only to collapse in the final few minutes. The Massachusetts State Cup was so
close. We were so close to winning the title, and we blew it. Our team took this
adversity and used it as motivation to work even harder for next semester. Every
practice following that loss was pure intense work. It ended up paying out for us in
the end, with the following season resulting in regaining the premier title of being
state champions. My team ended up working harder, smarter, and betterthan the
opposition, all because of us learning from our mistakes. We took what didn t work
from the last year s catastrophe, and improved upon it. The final product was a well
oiled machine that demolished every team dumb enough to face it. In an albeit less
dramatic fashion, the process of writingshares bountiful similarities with a soccer
tournament such as the ones I went to. During my journey through Writing 104, I
faced several assignments that resulted in not so stellar grades. This reflection
process allows me to go over these mistakes, and share to all how I fixed them into
a much better piece. Writing 104 coached me through many great pieces, and
expanded my knowledge as a writer in so many fields, specifically in writing
effectively, and information literacy. To start off, my time in this class brought many
wonderful moments, allowing me to share my experiences on paper. One such
example was my favorite

have less commitment to fulfil than I m able to spend a bigger chunk of time to

cards for me that draw me to take online classes was the ability to ask questions and
interact in learning with the teacher without fear of classmate making fun of me
because of my speech pattern or being shy asking question. I can ask and obtain the

Marijuana Use For Medical And Recreational Purposes
The history of marijuana use goes back thousands of years. Marijuana is a potent,
mind altering substance derived from the Cannabis plant. It has been used for both
medical and recreational purposes. It is a Schedule 1 drug or a controlled substance
under federal law in the United States, which means it is an illegal drug. According to
the National Institute of Drug Abuse Center (2014), marijuana is the number one
most commonly used substance among adolescents and synthetic marijuana is
second, which has a severe concern on health (NIDAC, 2014). Research on
marijuana for medical purpose is ongoing. In the United States, the legalization of
marijuana has been a debatable subject in recent years. More and more states are

marijuana occasionally with his friends during party. Marco said that he started
experiencing leg pain when he was 2nd year in college. In addition, he was
experiencing loss of appetite. He stated, I lost 20 lbs. of weight in one month.
Doctors did not find any reason of my weight loss. My parents would do anything
to get rid of my pain. (Marco, personal interview, September 15, 2015). According to

painkiller. This endocannabinoid system controls the regulation of movement, pain,
appetite, memory, immunity, blood pressure, bone density, reproduction,

about effectiveness of marijuana use for chronic pain, improve appetite, spasticity,

compound calls tetrahyrocannabinol (THC) is the main mind altering or
psychoactive component of marijuana. THC activates brain cell to release a

which makes people feels high
The Effects Of Water Pollution
Pollution is a term applied to any environmental state or manifestation which is
harmful or unpleasant to life, resulting from failure to achieve or maintain control
over the chemical, physical or biological consequences or side effects of human
scientific, industrial and social habits (Feugo, 2008; Anderson et al., 2005). From
another perspective, water pollutionrefers to any physical, biological or chemical
change in water quality that adversely affects living organisms and makes water
unsuitable for desired uses as a result of anthropogenic activities (Cunningham and
Saigo, 2003; Anderson et al., 2005). Many human activities from water supply and

Black Friday Persuasive Essay
Over the past few years, Black Friday sales across the nation have started earlier
and earlier. These sales can potentially cut into what is more important:
Thanksgiving. Black Friday sales started as early as 6pm in 2015. Will these sales
start earlier next year? What about in a few years? This shopping frenzy is slowly
replacing Thanksgiving traditions. All together, companies should be required to
start at or later than 12am. Let Thanksgiving have its own day to celebrate with
families and friends. Black Fridaysales that start later have more benefits for both
retailers and shoppers.

Working long, hard shifts to help customers buy clothes and gifts is the opposite of
what Thanksgiving should be about. Thanksgiving should be a holiday to
celebrate with friends and family. People should relax and remember what they
are thankful for. With sale times starting as early as 6pm, workers don t receive the
Thanksgiving time they need. Connie Miller, a worker at Kohl s, told reporters
about her insane working schedule over Black Friday. She didn t get home til 1am
on Thanksgiving morning. She got a few sleeping hours in until she had to wake
up early to cook a Thanksgiving meal for 15 people, who were arriving at noon.
She left the celebration early to get to work by 5:30 pm and continued working
until just after midnight. The next day, she left home and returned back to work at
6 am on Black Friday for an eight hour shift. Connie told reporters, They don t even
give you time to come home and actually go to sleep before you re due back. We re
working on Thanksgiving...if you d valued family, we d be at home. Connie Miller

How Is Catherine The Great Controlled Russia
Catherine the Great also known as Catherine II, (who was the most longest ruling
female in Russia) had ruled Russia form 1762 to 1796. During her time in throne,
Catherine had made Russia a more developed country in many different aspects.
Catherine the Great had effected nobility, peasantry, military, religion and taxes
/ government spendings. She controlled all of these aspects of Russiaand these are the
main reason why she is the absolute monarch.
Like i said Catherine controlled Russia nobility. Nobles were a class of people with
high political static and Catherine the Great had power over them. When Catherine
was in throne the nobles called it the Golden age of Russian nobility, this is because
Catherine the great authorized a new law that would free the nobles form
compulsory military. She not only did that, she build many mansions for them (and
there were designed in western designs due to that that was the main style back
then). Finally Catherine wrote manuals for the education for the young noble girls
and she also assigned a charter to the nobles. As you can see Catherine s relations
with the noble is strong and you see how much control over she as on them. ... Show

Catherine the great wan t much of a fan of peasants, intact in 1766 she declared
that peasants should not get paid and have a one meal plan a day, of course this was

force were mostly peasants who were forced to take part. Catherine the great thought

Women Of The American Civil War
Mothers of Invention: Women of the Slaveholding South in the American Civil War
provides a look into the rarely discussed topic of women in the South during the time
of the Civil War. While other authors consider the implications of slavery or military
tactics from the viewpoint of men, Faust offers a refreshing take on these subjects
along with others to construct a narrative that examines the role of women from a
genderand class standpoint. Additionally, Faust suggests that women s roles within
the framework of war created new functions in their everyday lives. While the author
does talk about the subject of women, many of her points are familiar as they are
comparable to other books.
Faust clearly states her argument within the first few pages of her book, and later
expands on the concept of women s roles within the context of war in the South by
stating, The upheavals of war created conceptual and emotional as well as social
dislocations, compelling southerners to rethink their most fundamental assumptions
about their identities and the logic of their places in the world. (Faust, 4) She
however, does not stop there and throughout the book it is evident that class position
and a non feminist versus feminist perspective are integral in considering her thesis
as well. As she moves from subject to subject within her book, the author clearly, and
sometimes subtly, presents her argument while demonstrating that the Civil War did
indeed change the role of women within
What Is The Climax Of The Old Willis Place
Could you be friends with a ghost? You journey through this question with Mary
Downing Hahn s book, The Old Willis Place. In The Old Willis Place, two children,
Diana and Georgie live together on a farm with a abandoned house. The farm has

best friends. But one day, when the two venture into the old house, Lissa lets out Ms.
Lillian s ghost, who despises, and had killed Diana and Georgie decades ago. Late
one night, Ms. Lillian finds Diana and Georgie. The two find out the truth about what

She and her father prove they are dynamic characters because they both thought of
Diana as a troublemaker and a monster at first, but now they think of her as a sweet,
pretty, and shy girl. They continue to progress that way of thinking throughout the
story, and keep thinking the nice things. Diana also begins to think of Lissa of a nice
friend, rather than a snob like she thought in the beginning. Therefore making them
round characters.
The Old Willis Place, takes place on a farm, which is a common setting for many
books. You are told about this when Lissa writes in her diary, saying, The first day
we came to the farm, there was people in the woods spying on us. (20) She and her
father take care of the farm and live in a trailer. They are one of many caretakers.
Most of the caretakers left because Diana and Georgie steal things from them, and
haunt them. Diana and Georgie live in the woods, another part of the setting, I
slipped into the woods to find my brother. (8) They live in the woods, which is
another setting. These two quotes in the book show that there is not only a setting,
but a common setting.
The book The Old Willis Place is believable because there is round characters,
dynamic characters, and a common setting. You would want to read this book
because it has an important message inside. The message is to always follow the
rules, and if you don t bad things will happen. It teaches you why

  • 2. What Is An Example Of Consumerism In Fight Club In Fight Club, there are multitudes of examples of the culture industry and its effects on the masses. As an audience, it can be seen from two different perspectives; the first is in terms of the Narrator and the second is through Tyler Durden, a second personality of the narrator who suffers from mental illness. The narrator lives an empty life and tries to find meaning or purpose through the IKEA cataloguewhile decorating his home. In turn, Tyler is the exact opposite he doesn t answer to anybody, he does what he wants, when he wants and doesn t let anything or anyone stop him. Evidently this is the version of himself that the narrator wants to be, as he lives vicariously through Tyler, which he is unaware is his own imagination for the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As an audience, throughout the film it is evident that there is a significant contrast between the narrator and Tyler as they view many things differently. Just like the Fight Club and the IKEA furniture, the narrator becomes obsessed with Tyler and the life he leads. When Tyler is first introduced as a passenger on the airplane, the narrator is immediately drawn to him in a way that is different than any other person he has met. He feels a connection with him that he has not felt before, which is why he calls him when his apartment burns and he loses all of his important IKEA furniture. Tyler tells him it s just stuff (Fight Club) and the things you own end up owning you (Fight Club), which completely contradicts everything the narrator had previously believed about his home and the furniture. Through Tyler, the narrator starts to lose his need for material objects when Tyler tells him Fuck off with your sofa units and strine green stripe patterns, I say never be complete, I say stop being perfect, I say let... let s evolve, let the chips fall where they may (Fight Club), instead he focuses on the fighting and his friendship with Tyler since he has finally found something that fills the void in his life and gives it meaning. Though it may seem abstract that Tyler would fit into this argument, it all comes together at the end of the film when the audience finds

The skin wasn t always used as a defining tool of one s self but had a logistic purpose and reason as to why and how the skin has evolved into what it is today. As Anthropologist Nina Jablonski explained in the film Skin the skin does have a practical purpose much like the baboons in the African Savanah who have thick hairy skin to keep them cool or like researchers have revealed skin can also have a greater philosophical meaning like the whipping of young women in a small tribe to show loyalty and bravery. The broad range of the meaning of skin is ever evolving and valued differently... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... University of Baltimore Orientation Day! Was terrifying for me. I walked into the Lyric Opera House, turn my head to the left, a white lady. Turn my head to the right, a white lady. Walk through the doors clusters upon clusters of white people, tall, small, large skinny old and young. The armpits start to sweat. I frantically walk in circles almost like my St. Bernard does when he is trying to find a comfortable spot. Then I see the most wonderful group of people. I ease up. Stop sweating. Hold my head high and slowly approach a group of young black men. I said, Hello , they stared at me, I don t think they like white people. I stay close to them, not to join in their fun, I

However, with the emergence of other vacation services organizations, Club Med soon lost its unique edge. Competitors such as Jack Tar and SuperClubs now included their own versions of Club Med magic an all inclusive price and a dedicated team of staff. Giraud must now decide how to create a sustainable competitive advantage for Club Med. He must consider the different aspects which will allow the company to innovate while keeping in check the industry s structure, culture, service, and above all keeping the Club Med magic alive. Evaluation of Alternative Solutions To offer something that no other company can offer is what will propel Club Med back to the top of their game and re coup both sales and market shares. Several opportunities exist for both Giraud and Club Med to explore, which includes: Brand and Positioning: Since the 1970 s, Club Med had a reputation of being the host resort for swinging singles and sex oriented individuals. As their average customer profile ages, Club Med should look towards positioning the company to grow with its main clientele. By re branding and positioning the company as family oriented, it will attract another market segment that other companies have not reached. In addition to positioning itself as family oriented, Club Med should also look towards positioning the brand to be more upscale and luxurious. This will allow it to compete with Jack Tar s more

  • 8. Al Capone And His Life Of Crime And Villainy Al CaponeAl Capone is known for his murders, gambling, and prostitution. He would even smash people s skulls open by hitting them on the side of the head with a bat! His parents would have never known that he would become the lead gangster of the prohibition era. What made him turn to his life of crime and villainy? He was just a normal schoolboy. Maybe it was his desire to support his family. Possibly it was meeting Johnny Torrio, that changed his perspective on crime. Or maybe it was both. Al Capone s real name is Alphonse Gabriel Capone. He was an Italian immigrant. His father was Gabriel Capone and his mother was Teresa Capone. He lived in just a little more than a slum. He went to a Catholic school that did not tolerate violence and scarred the susceptible kid. He was later expelled at the age of 14 for hitting a female teacher. He later met Johnny Torrio which could have been the greatest influence in his life. Johnny Torrio was a key figure to Al Capone . Later Al Capone joined Torrio s James Street Boys gang. He later stopped the gang life and settled down and married middle class Irish girl Mae Coughlin and worked as a bookkeeper. He was soon to return to his old job with Torrio in Chicago. His father s death affected him greatly. His reputation was growing a lot at this point. He would never go anywhere without two bodyguards. He would even be smashed by bodyguards when in the car. Al Capone s reputation grew a lot, but how

  • 10. Analysis Of Homer s The Iliad In Homer s The Iliad, women can often be overshadowed by the strong male warriors that dominate the epic poem. However, many women in The Iliad are central to the plot; without these women the poem would have a drastically different story. The influence of women in The Iliad varies from woman to woman, usually having some effect on the plot, but the extent of their involvement is typically dependent on their status in society. However, even when a woman is in a position of great power, she is still expected to bow to the will of others. Chryseis and Briseis, although treated as property and spoils of war, are the impetus for the actions of Achillesand Agamemnonearly in the poem. It is due to the kidnapping of Chryseis that Apollo sends a plague upon the Achaians. Because Agamemnon is forced to give Chryseis back to her father, he starts a quarrel with Achilles. Eventually this quarrel leads to Agamemnon s demand that he get Achilles s prize Briseis as a reimbursement for Chryseis. It is because of this that Achilles abandons the Achaian army and asks Zeus to favor the Trojans instead (Book 1). Although Chryseis and Briseis only indirectly cause this, without them it is unlikely that such a quarrel would have arisen and therefore unlikely that Zeus would attempt to aid the Trojans. Although the Achaian men see them as property and believe their lives have no serious importance, they are the reason that the Trojans could potentially overtake the Achaians. One of the most

  • 12. Pharmacy At Rainer s Pharmacy As a pharmacy technician at Rainer s Pharmacy, in Jeannette, Pennsylvania. I have learned what types of people visit a pharmacy. At the pharmacy, we deliver medication and groceries within two hours of the pharmacy. The pharmacy is made up of three sections: retail, hospice, and the laboratory. I work in the retail and hospice section; I have met the diabetic hero, the storytellers, and the narc eater. The diabetic hero is the scariest. From in the pharmacyyou can hear him pull into the parking lot;his car is rusted from the back left wheel to the front right wheel. The car sounds like it has not been inspected for years. It clanks and bangs and leaves a trail of smoke behind it. He puts the car in park then comes in and out before anyone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is two types within the pharmacy:the retail and the hospice. The retail narc eater are mean and usually have an egotistic attitude. She always has a scowl on her face. Her look is distinct she has on dirty sweatpants and a t shirt with holes in the armpit or around the neck. She comes in screaming you shorted me pills, where the fuck is the rest of my medicine That is very unlikely, because each c2 and c3 narcotics get placed in a bubble sheet with the set amount of pills counted out for the dosage. If she is not complaining about not having enough medicine, she wants to fill the prescription too early and she doesn t understand why the pharmacy can not fill it. Her insurance will not cover it unless she follows the correct dosage. She tries to pay for the prescription without insurance but the price can be a few hundred and she responds with, you can shove the money up your ass. The hospice narc eaters are worse than the retail. These patients are terminally ill and they still want to get that high or they want to sell their narcotics. For example, patient Sara Lee gets daily narcotics with only one day s worth, because her children will take her medicine and sell it. This causes that no one else can sign the manifest saying that the patient received the medication. This can only help so much. The pharmacy gets multiple calls saying that patient s children is selling the medication right off the front porch.
  • 13. The Bio Ecological Theory Created By Bronfenbrenner Throughout the world there are many homeless individuals who are in need of help. Many of these people have trouble finding a job or a way to help themselves get stable. Not a lot of the homeless know how to handle money or illnesses they have developed. Many homeless also suffer from addictions and are in need of rehabilitation programs. The cause of these illnesses or drug problems can be related to the fact that when growing up they suffered from different life changes and expectations within the bio ecological theory or context. For my Service Learning Project I have implemented a project that I believe will help the homeless community with their second chance. As we grow up we associate ourselves with different people and environments no matter how old we are or get we still see different people and different environments. The bio ecological theory created by Bronfenbrenner, which explains just that with contexts of development. With the contexts of development there are the biological, immediate, socioeconomic, and cultural contexts. All of these contexts play a role in whether or not your life heads in a good or bad path. In every context there is a different association from people and the environment such as cultural context which can provide the belief in society that education is important.(Boyd, 2015) However, the belief that education is important can be downgraded in the socioeconomic context if a family does not have the ability to send their child to a

It depicts the adventures and stories of various characters a long time ago in a galaxy far far away . The creator, George Lucas, based this series off of many of the historical events that took place over the centuries on this planet. And evidently, many of the characters in this film series relate to leaders, rulers, and other significant people from the real world. One of these many similarities is the relationship between Hitler, the Nazi party, and the Sith, Darth Sidious and Darth Vader, as they both strive for absolutism. Palpatine also takes advantage of the unstable Republic, and seizes the opportunity to become the chancellor during Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. The next thing they did was attain power by using emergency powers. For Palpatine, that chance came at the beginning of the Clone War, seen in Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones. In that story, Jar Jar Binks proposed that Palpatine should be granted emergency powers until the Separatist crisis had passed. Also in reaction to a crisis, Hitler seized the opportunity to take emergency powers after the Reichstag fire of 1933. Following a decree from Hitler, the Reichstag and Reichsrat both passed what is known as the Enabling Act, effectively giving the chancellor the power to enact laws without those legislative bodies (Horton, 1). In both cases, these newly empowered chancellors were able to lead their people to war using a secret army each had been building. For Palpatine, that army was a clone army, which he created in secret many years before the beginning of the Clone Wars. In Germany, the secret task began years before Hitler became chancellor. As a result of the treaty of Versailles in 1919, Germany was banned from building weapons of war, and etc.

Ethical Standards For Mental Health Service Providers Running head: ETHICAL STANDARDS EXAM12 Ethical Standards for Mental Health Service Providers Final Exam Alanna Sampson Yorkville University Question 1 Introducing the limits of confidentiality in simple language that a client can understand is the first step in establishing the therapeutic relationship. ?Confidently should be explained to all potential clients with the general understanding that any information gained from the counseling relationship is kept confidential. They must also share that there are limitations when it comes to safety concerns. Examples of these limitations would be if the professional has a concern that the clients are at a risk of harming themself, someone else, or if they are posing a risk to the counselor. There are additional reasons why a counselor will have to break confidentiality in cases when there is a confession that is ordered by the court or requested by the client. They may also need to release records in a situation where a client has filed a complaint towards their counselor (Martin, Shepard Lehr, 2015). Working within the confines of consulting or private practice the Canadian Counseling and Psychotherapy Association Standards of Practice (2015) must be followed. • 28. Pros And Cons Of False Confessions People know that false confessions are possible, however, most do not understand the severity. 66% of people said that if a person signed a confession, they were most likely guilty (Henkel, Coffman, Dailey, 2008). Only 11% disagreed that a person might confess to a crime they did not commit. Furthermore, only 42% of participants said that the police might lie about the police having evidence. Henkel, Coffman, and Dailey report an overwhelming majority of the participants claimed that they would never confess during an interrogation. What may lead to a false confession? One major factor is not understanding Miranda rights. Adults may have some difficulty understanding and appreciating their Miranda rights, but have a general idea of their rights. Conversely, juveniles have a much more difficult time comprehending their rights. The current standard for competency is a having a basic understanding of Miranda rights (Grisso et al., 2003). However, Viljoen, Zapf, and Roesch (2007) found that 58% of defendants ages 11 13, 33.3% of defendants ages 14 15, and 7.8% of defendants ages 16 17 did not meet this standard. Moreover, if the defendant must also appreciate the rights, 78% of defendants ages 11 13, 62.7% of defendants ages 14 15, and 35.3% of defendants ages 16 17 did not meet these standards. Comprehension of Miranda rights is critical, as one may falsely confess if they do not understand and utilize their rights. Age also changes how the juvenile responds to the
  • 29. The Idea Of Art By Dorothy Allison The idea of art being a unique interpretation of what an artist s feels towards a particular thing has always been a given when talking about art. However, where is the line drawn on what art truly is and what it means to its audience? To do this, the idea of what art means must be applied to the idea of what art is. In Dorothy Allison s This is Our World, the author touches on points of what art is and what it means to its viewers. These points and supporting stories point to the idea that art is subjective, personal, and provocative. This allows Allison to draw her conclusion that arts purpose is to depict the deeper meaning into situations and incidents that occur in our world. In Dorothy Allison s journal, one can see how the author effectively conveys the ideas of art being personal and subjective, but fails at detailing how art can be subjective. One idea that Allison points to throughout her essay is that art is subjective, stating that every person sees art differently. While doing this she adds her ideas of what art should be, indicating that art is meant to tell a story and tell the reality of a situation. For example, Allison references a memory of her friend Jackie criticizing her black and white photos; which in Allison eyes captures the stories of the people within them, making it art (Allison). In this moment one can see how one form of art can be seen as nothing more than a common object depending on perception. Another example of this is how in the 21st

  • 36. Our Retreat Brought Renewal and Hope for Better Days Ahead... Nine teenage girls and their leaders crammed on outdated bench seats as the smell of various sack dinners and chocolate filled the borrowed short bus. Vinyl seats cracking, teenage girls laughing and the makeshift radio blasting we followed behind the boys in their SUV to Woodland Park. The brisk March wind rattled the old windows of our little white and blue, borrowed bus. Miles of twisting roads and pinetrees that seemed to pierce the low floating clouds lead us to our retreat house. Gravel crunched beneath our tires, hitting the sides of our bus, creating a rumble under our feet as we pulled up the drive. Great gray boulders outlined planters along the front of the patio and knotted wood planking covered every side of the house. Two... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Secrets and random thoughts were whispered under the glow of flashlights until we could no longer keep our eyes open after lights out. A comfortable silence fell over the house as we all finally drifted off. Groggy faces slowly made appearances as the heavenly aroma of bacon and waffles coaxed us from our dreams before the sun had even crested the mountain ridges, the following morning. Dream catchers of various sizes fluttered in the pine scented wind on the deck after breakfast. Teams ran through the trees on a scavenger hunt, breaking the silence as sunlight streamed through the pine needles. In the afternoon, colorful rays of light poured through the stained glass window as small groups bonded over boxes of tissues and shared memories of our middle school youth group. Another intense round of sardines had us piling into hidden cabinets and coat closets. Playful banter between the more egocentric members of our teams kept the games interesting as we all tried to beat each other in games of tag and never have I ever. Female Role Portrayals Not Matching The Public Expectations There have been many ethical discussions about female role portrayals not matching the public expectations i.e. the female characteristics been narrowly described and disapprovingly presented in a stereotypical manner such as not intelligent, fragile, irrational, decorative, submissive and subservient to men (Courtney, AE Lockeretz, SW 1971; Venkatesan Losco 1975; Belkaoui Belkaoui, 1976; Goffman 1979; Blackwood 1983; Bretl Cantor 1988; Jolliffe 1989; Luebke 1989; Kang, EU 1997; Acevedo, CR et al. 2006). However, Shields (1997 cited in Carpenter Edison p.7) have argued that These messages are used to sell everything from cosmetics to cars to beverages, provide a prescription for how women should look and be looked at, how they should feel, and how they are expected to act. Furthermore specialists on feminist movements also debate that previously advertising illustrations and expressions of female parts were more of solid signs of objectification and representative of male desire where women were appeared to be more controlled than men under the societal expectations (Dvir et al., 1995; Rayburn et al., 1999 cited in Lin Yeh 2009). But few experts propose that the modern role depictions are neither excessively prevalent nor necessarily archetypal of typical feminine roles (Courtney and Sarah 1971; Whipple and Courtney, 1985; Zhou and Chen, 1997 cited in Lin Yeh 2009). Even today, the recent studies suggest that advertisements do not reflect the contemporary gender roles and advertisers still incorporate clichГ©d images that no longer exist (Zotos Tsichla 2014). There has been a gap to understand whether this way of representation is due to cultural effects and the role of social foundations that continue to diffuse non comparable attitudes and hierarchical structures in the relationship between the

According to Merriam Webster, it is the quality or state of being apart from company or observation or the freedom from unauthorized intrusion. This definition implies that one has the ability to isolate onself or even information about onself, and is thus able to express oneself freely and secretly. While privacy and what is considered private differs across cultures and societal norms, the common themes remain. When an individual deems something private , this usually suggests that this object in particular is intrinsically special or sensitive for him or herself. Advocates underscore that the amendment clearly alludes to a right to privacy and should be further extended to digital properties as well. In this case, digital documents would be analogous to the papers mentioned in the amendment. If the NSA has the technological power to track people s communications, then it should only be able to follow people of suspect, or probable cause, thus preserving the privacy of the innocent civilian. Simply put, the U.S. Constitution placed a high value on privacy with the 4th amendment, and therefore the U.S. Government has the responsibility to uphold that declaration. Kurt Vonnegut Essay Kurt Vonnegut Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. is a contemporary American author whose works have been described by Richard Giannone as comic masks covering the tragic farce that is our contemporary life (Draper, 3784). Vonnegut s life has had a number of significant influences on his works. Influences from his personal philosophy, his life and experiences, and his family are evident elements in his works. Among his comic masks are three novels: Cat s Cradle, The Sirens of Titan, and God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater. Before the novel even starts, just below the dedication, he declares, Nothing in this book is true. Live by the foma [harmless untruths] that make you brave and kind and healthy and happy (Vonnegut, Cradle). Vonnegut carries this concept all through the story, that the universe is meaningless and each person must exist for oneself. He even goes to the extent of inventing a religion, Bokononism, with which humans attempt to make some sense of everything, while realizing that everything is nonsensical. Vonnegut s existential philosophy also takes the form of a religion in The Sirens of Titan. The Church of God the Utterly Indifferent is established, on the principle that puny man can do nothing at all to help or please God Almighty, and Luck is not the hand of God (Vonnegut, Sirens, 180). Toward the end of the story, two existential ideas are developed: first that human life is incomprehensible (in this case controlled by aliens from another planet for a trivial purpose), and second that people must make a meaning for life on their own. When one character states, The worst thing that could possibly happen. . . would be to not be used for anything by anybody, Vonnegut is suggesting that a good meaning for life might simply be to be
  • 44. Humans and Their Ability to Make Mistakes Humans And Their Ability To Make Mistakes In today s pop culture, there is one very popular view of the future. All humans will be free to do as they wish, because robots and computers will work for us. Computers are viewed as the ideal slaves. They work non stop, never complain, and above all, never make mistakes. It is often said that computers don t make mistakes, that it is the person using the computer who commits errors. What is it that makes humans err, but not computers? I will prove that it is simply the way humans are built that makes us commit errors. It seems that our brains can compute complex operations that allow us to drive a car through terrible weather conditions, at night, but all these operations cannot be accomplished within too short a time limit. So far, we have discussed the speed at which the brain can compute operations without error. We must consider other factors which can also lead to mistakes. To explain other types of error, I will use a terminology developed and used by the philosopher Bertrand Russell. He identifies something called sense data. Sense data is the data received by our senses from the object being sensed . For instance, if a person is looking at a red apple, the shape and color and all other aspects of this apple are received in the form of sense data. In the case of the man adding up the numbers, he mistook a 7 for a 1. What really happened is that his senses misidentified the number. The sense data was received by his eyes, which then converted this information into an electrical signal to be sent to the brain for analysis. There are thus two possibilities. Either the eyes did not transform the signal of the 7 properly, or the brain misunderstood the signal received from the eyes. In both cases, the sense data was analyzed incorrectly, leading to an error in the final calculation. Some skeptics might criticize my position by

While other authors consider the implications of slavery or military tactics from the viewpoint of men, Faust offers a refreshing take on these subjects along with others to construct a narrative that examines the role of women from a genderand class standpoint. Additionally, Faust suggests that women s roles within the framework of war created new functions in their everyday lives. While the author does talk about the subject of women, many of her points are familiar as they are comparable to other books. Faust clearly states her argument within the first few pages of her book, and later expands on the concept of women s roles within the context of war in the South by stating, The upheavals of war created conceptual and emotional as well as social dislocations, compelling southerners to rethink their most fundamental assumptions about their identities and the logic of their places in the world.
