The last day of school was a good day. Instead of having to take an ELAR exam we
did PSP. On the last day I had ELAR for 4th and 5th period. I didn t have to do
anything. Since we didn t have to take a test we got to play games and mess around.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to produce succinic acid from glycerol residue through
anaerobic fermentation process. The study of reaction parameters (pH, temperature
and mass substrate) was performed by using expert design software in glycerol
recovery process. One factor at one time (OFAT) method was performed as
preliminary studies for selection of parameters range and subsequently determine its
optimum condition using response surface methodology (RSM). The concentration
of glycerol and succinic acid were determined using HPLC analysis. The FTIR
spectrometry was applied to examine the adsorption of organic element. Statistical
optimization (Respond Surface design Methodology) showed that optimal conditions
were at pH, 2, temperature 35 0C and substrate 110.36 gram. At this optimum,
159.312 g/L was recovery of glycerol was obtained. Succinic acid was produced via
fermentation process by using Escherichia coli type k 12 under 19.67 g/L initial

In Animal Farm, Orwell subtly presents tyranny through the character of
Napoleon. In chapter 6, Orwell shows how Squealer is used by Napoleon to
persuade the animals. Surely none of you wishes to see Jones back? Orwell has
used a rhetorical question to show the manipulation and intelligence that the pigs
have. The use of you (second person) involves each animal as an individual instead

Plato And Plato s Republic
The ancient Greek Philosopher Plato had an interest in finding the ideal
government. In Plato s Republic, he discusses his ideas and views of how this
ideal government would function. He believed that people are born into 3 different
classes, with different responsibilities (Plato 415a). Only people in the golden class
were fit to rule. The most effective of these rulers would be philosophers, as they
have knowledge of the good of the whole (Plato473d). This system seems too perfect
for me. I believe that Plato s republic is unjust and would not work with our modern
society, as it relies too much on the golden class choosing what is right for everyone,
and there is nothing to make them accountable if they choose wrong.
Before arguing for my ideas on Plato s Republic, I will elaborate more on what the
Republic entails. Plato believed that the citizens of a state should be told you are
brothers, yet God has framed you differently (Plato 415a). Some people are born
into the golden class fit for leadership, some are born into the silver class meant to
be auxiliaries to aid the golden class, and others are born into the brass or iron
class destined to be farmers and labourers. It was Plato s idea that the fostering of
such a belief will make them [citizens] care more for the city and for one another

That persons with very low incomes may merit our sympathy is accepted, but
sympathy leads to charity, rather than to the involuntary exploitation of the better off
(Narveson, 2004). Singer also says that people with a maintainable amount of wealth
should give more than the X amount asked for, being that the predicament that some
are not able to give or they can give less than the amount asked for. Another, more
serious reason for not giving to famine relief funds is that until there is effective
population control, relieving famine merely postpone starvation (Singer, 1972). The
final and third counter argument is that Singer question exactly how much we
should be giving away. In this counter argument, Singer talks of giving until one
reaches marginal utility; or in the case where suffering would have greatly
increased or decreased in his self, if he gave more than one can afford to give. One

The Uniform Crime Report, which was developed in the 1930s, is commonly used
by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a record of crimes committed all across
the United States. These crimes, which fall under two categories, Part I and Part II
offenses, are reported by local police to the Federal Bureau of Investigation each
year. Part I offenses are considered to be the more serious of crimes recognized by
society. Such examples of this are homicide, forcible rape, robbery, arson, motor

that the shooter was that of another African American man, possibly gang related.
Although a crime is reported in the Uniform Crime Report does not mean that the
arrestee in that crime is representative of the population. It is easy to misinterpret the
Uniform Crime Report and generalize a certain race or even gender to a particular
crime. We often see poor, nonwhite males in the Uniform Crime Report for
committing Part I crimes. This diverts the attention away from the wealthy white
businessman who might be a part of white collar crime. White collar crime is hardly
represented in this type of crime measurement (Barkan, 2012). However,
measurements of crime using the Uniform Crime Report are not completely accurate
either. Local police officers often do not report crimes that they think are not
substantial enough. Only the more serious crimes (Part I crimes) are the ones that
they feel deserve the time and effort doing paper work for to be reported in the
Uniform Crime Report. This means that a lot of Part II cases go unreported by
police and, once again, the white collar crimes are over looked meaning the Uniform

I remember when she held me as a baby and calmed me down whenever I was

In general, humans have the ability to think through their decision and choose
which course of action to take. On the conceptual level, it seems easy to determine
voluntary from involuntary acts. However, in real world decisions, some of the
distinctions between the two are not as clear and the type of action is blurred. In
this paper, I will defend Aristotle view s on the grey, or mixed, areas of voluntary and
involuntary actions. Aristotle opens Book III Chapter I of Nicomachean Ethicswith
These [feelings and actions] receive praise or blame if they are voluntary, but
pardon, sometime even pity, if they are involuntary. (Nicomachean Ethics 1109b30).
Based on these reactions of society, it seems we should be able to easily distinguish...
But maybe not in the exact moment it is happening, but some action that you
previously made led you to the point were you are at now. So if it was voluntary
choice then, would it make its consequences voluntary? In order for something to
be completely involuntary, Aristotle believes the person must ...feel pain and
regret for his action. (Nicomachean Ethics 1110b20), which could define the
involuntary consequences of voluntary actions. He uses examples of animals and
children as not acting voluntarily, and I believe the mentally ill could also fall
under this category. However, not all will show pain and regret for their bad
actions if they were not raised that way. It is in a lion s nature to kill, and is praised
for doing so by its peers, however it is blamed if its prey is human. But the lion
won t show pain or regret for either kill, because it is not in it s nature to. For a
child or mentally ill person, they may not have been raised to feel bad about
shameful acts, or may not be able to control themselves. While these examples are
not viewed as correct on a moral or social level, it is just the participant s basic
nature and they do not always show remorse, even if it is an involuntary action. So
while I believe Aristotle is correct in describing these actions as involuntary, they do

The film that I have chosen to analyse is Gladiator. I have chosen to analyse the
scene where the gladiators are battling in the Middle East. The scene contains many
features and editing techniques which make the fight sequence exciting and
thrilling. The scene begins with a medium high angle shot of a goat with blood
dripping down its body. This shot frames the body of the goat and gives it a sense of
vulnerability. The shot creates meaning to the viewer who can predict that the scene
might contain violence or bloodshed of some sort. The camera then zooms outward
into an establishing shot to give the viewer an idea of the setting. The mise en ...
The lighting is very low key and most of the light filters from the roof, overhead. The
overhead lighting dominates the gladiatorГ‚ s faces and brings out their facial
features. This effect shows the faces of the gladiatorГ‚ s and their anticipation of
the battle which is about to commence. Non diegetic orchestral music starts to
begin once more building the tension. The camera then cuts into a close up of
every gladiator whilst moving slowly to the side where it stops and gives us a side
view shot of the gladiatorГ‚ s showing in detail their facial expressions. This is
where the dialogue of the main character begins and the camera moves slowly to a
medium low angle shot, thus giving the character a sense of authority. The character
speaks slowly and when he accentuates an important point the camera moves to a
close up of the main character of the film (Russell Crowe), showing the viewer his
feelings and his anticipation. In the background there is the external diegetic sound of
the crowd chanting, kill, kill, kill. This along with the orchestral music sounds like a
heart beat as there is a short pause between every chant. Again the heart beat sound
reiterates the anticipation of the gladiators; this is effective as it makes the scene more
