Doing that MBA: It's about asking the right questions ( A ready reckoner for ...Anirban Das
The MBA has typically been considered a ticket to a high flying corporate career? Is it? A sensational news headline in India announced (rather gleefully) that only 7% of Indian business school graduates, outside the top schools, are actually employable. Really? What information did the article 'hide'? And what should the student do? Is the MBA really worth it? If yes, how should he/she choose the college? When should he/she do the MBA? 1 year or 2 year or Part-Time? Integrated or New Age? Boy, it's so confusing for the students!
This article is a ready reckoner for students wanting to pursue their MBA as it helps them to asks the right questions in order to arrive at the right career decision.
And yes, there is something in the article for the institutes and companies too in how they can contribute.
Academic excellence vs. professional excellenceAbhipsha Mishra
Most students who excel in their academics don’t necessarily excel in their profession. For example; most CEOs are not necessarily toppers from the best B-schools. Why most often academic excellence does not translate into professional excellence? Where is the gap? Is it in the curriculum, system, corporate set up or somewhere else? How can we bridge the gap?

Online Education: Helping Adults Achieve their Educational and professional Goals
Thesis: Although Human Resource Managers and Admissions Counselors often have concerns about the quality of online education such that they more often than not discriminate against holders of online degrees, the benefits of having a degree over none is leading most adults and working parents to pursue online education as the only avenue for them to keep their jobs, attend to family and personal matters while achieving their educational and professional goals.
I. The advent of the internet and an ongoing need for education has served as the impetus for the steadily growing of online education.
A. A study by (Ormond 46), presented in his book, reveals that ‘‘online and distance learning are the world’s fastest growing areas of educational development’’.
B. According to a study by Harvard Business School Professor Clayton Christensen and Michael Horn, by 2019, about half of all high school courses will be taken online.
II. Numerous researches have shown that the quality of education delivered online is on the same par with if not more rigorous than education delivered in traditional bricks and mortar institution.
A. Most online education students find that online education requires more discipline and commitment.
B. Prominent institutions like Harvard University, the University of London, and University of South Africa among others have created and are delivering some of their programs online to adults and busy individuals who cannot come to campus.
C. That the Big Three (Thomas Edison State College, Charter Oak States College, and Excelsior College) are regionally accredited and are 100% devoted to online education for adults, is an indication of the quality of the education offered by these colleges.
III. There is a need to sensitize and appeal to the inner conscience of Human Resource and hiring managers to stop the discrimination against legitimate online education degree holders and enforce laws on online degree discrimination.
A. Making some traditional students take at least one or two online classes can help change the bias against online education.
B. It is possible to help adults who have lost hope of returning back to college to take advantage of the technology of the twenty first century to achieve and live their dreams of becoming educated and landing the their dream jobs.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

ABSTRACT
Almost for last 20+ years I am hearing this comparison and since then I am trying my level
best to identify the solution? First, what is this comparison and why we all compare it with
only Top – 20 B-Schools. The reason is very simple – ‘jobs’ or ‘career’ available with Top –
20 B-Schools are in plenty; almost 3 offer for each students. But what about ‘other’ B-School
who claims themselves at par with Top -20 but the ‘reality’ is totally different. This paper
will lay emphasis on why Top – 200 recruiters ‘ignore’ ‘other’ B-Schools for Campus
Recruitment.
My findings are basically based on both primary and secondary data. The primary data has
been collected through questionnaire and several structured and unstructured interviews were
also conducted to elicit first hand information with the theme of the research work. However,
secondary data is collected from various concerned websites available on www.google.com
& www.wikipedia.org. Data collected both from primary and secondary sources have been
interpreted with the help of statistical devices.
INTRODUCTION
As we know very well that MBA education in India is growing by leaps and bounds. If I am
not wrong it has grown almost 500% in comparison to 1990’s. But one thing which we all
forgot that by opening the institute only will not serve the purpose. We should have plenty of
‘jobs’ available with our students who are spending a great sum of money for getting MBA /
PGDM degrees. But reality is far behind and truth is that hardly 30% gets the good jobs and
rest are just struggling very hard even for getting the jobs of Rs.10, 000. It might possible that
for ‘suitable’ jobs they may have to wait for 5-10 years – Why?
BASIC FACTS
What we don’t have? If we really would like to compare with Top – 20 B-Schools then we
must have the basic infrastructure which is worth mentioning:
(A)Quality Students
It has already been proved that it’s the students who make a particular institute good or bad
NOT the ‘Faculty’ (2nd
most important assets after students) working over there may be very
qualified. For example – Even if you send IIM – A Faculty at “Charwaha Vidyalaya” in
Bihar; they cannot turn this into any IIM.
In most of the ‘other’ category B-School, 80% accept the scores of MAT (below 60%) and
10% go by CAT scores (below 40 – 50 percentile i.e. only 12 - 16 marks out of 165 marks).
1
2. As a result is that ‘input’ is not up to the mark and if input is not correct then what to talk
about ‘output’ (almost all Top – 20 consider 50-100 percentiles i.e. at least 40- 50 marks out
of 160 -170).
Not only this ‘intake’ of students also differs in all Top -20 which is worth mentioning:
Findings – 1:
“Top – 20” “Others”
Percentage in 10th :
Minimum – 80% 50%
Percentage in 10+2 : Minimum – 70% 50%
Percentage in Graduation: Minimum – 60% 50%
Percentage in PG : Minimum – 60% Not required
Findings – 2:
“Top – 20” “Others”
Percentage of B.E./B.TECH :
Minimum – 80% 5%
Percentage of Science : Minimum – 10% 40%
Percentage of Commerce : Minimum – 5% 25%
Percentage of Arts : Minimum – 5 % 30%
It is well said – ‘garbage in, garbage out’.
(B)Branding
It comes through ‘maximum networking’ with the corporate as far as possible. But on this
ground our 95% “other” category B-Schools are “Nil”. The truth behind this are – there are
‘3’ types of people who are running B-Schools in India which is worth mentioning:
Type – A:
Who has vision, mission and at the same time would like to extend the ‘best’ services to the
whole world assuming their responsibilities and accountabilities and above all they are
‘Academician’ by profession who understands others very well (all people who are running
Top -20 B-Schools falls under this category).
Type – B:
They are ‘Academician’ by profession but they do not have enough money so they invite
other business people to support him due to which his ‘share’ in that particular business is
very less – very simple to say that he cannot take any ‘independent’ decision like Mr.
2
3. Manmohan Singh thereby that ‘innocent’ but playing with careers of students and boosting of
30% placements.
Type – C:
They are basically ‘money’ minded people and their entire business is purely “show-off”.
They are all from the core business family without any vision & mission. They are not
‘Academician’ thereby that they treat their entire staff as a “Bounded Labour” (also
liabilities) and Students as a “Customer” (assets). Their percentage in India is very high i.e.
almost 80%.
(C) Inexperienced Students
Firstly, intake in other B-Schools is almost “fresher’s” (95%) due to which they do not have
any hands on experience. That is why, corporate do not consider them. Secondly, they do not
have any exposure in terms of project training and industrial visits. Thirdly, they have very
little exposure in relation to Guest lectures, Workshops, Seminars, Conferences etc.
Findings – 3:
Top -20 Others
Percentage of ‘Experienced’ students : 70% 5%
(1to 3 years)
Percentage of ‘Experienced’ students : 5% Nil
(3to 5 years)
Percentage of ‘fresher’ students : 25% 95%
(D)Standard of ‘Faculty’
If we compare it with Top -20 the truth is like this which is worth mentioning:
Top – 20 Others
PHD : 90% 10 – 20%
PG : 10% 80%
Top – 20 Others
Corporate Experience : 80% - 10 to 20 years 10% - 10 to 20 years
Corporate Experience : 10% - 3 to 10 years 70% - 3 to 10 years
Academic Experience : 10% - 1 to 30 years 10% - 1 to 30 years
Fresher : NA 10% - Fresh MBA
(E)Soft Skills
This is the need of the hour and in high demand and at the same time highly debatable among
scholars whether to introduce this as a course curriculum or not. I remember one news when
Infosys had clearly mark that – they incur almost 50 lakhs for each ‘new’ entrant every year
on “Training” because they are only ‘intelligent’ but not ‘creative’ and at the same time their
“soft skills” are very poor. Keeping in mind the soft skills need – Infosys started their own
3
4. institute on 2006 – “Campus Connect”. On the basis of my interaction with the students in
more than 250+ colleges and 250+ companies with the executives / managers – the basic soft
skills training is required on:
1. Attitude
As per one survey your attitude determines 85% success in your life. So keep positive
attitude towards everyone and be the responsible and accountable citizen of this
world.
2. Grooming
It alone gives you 30% success in an interview. It simply says you know how to dress
up well and keep on smiling.
3. Confidence
‘Impossible’ itself says – I am possible.
4. Communication Skills
It is simply the effective reading, writing, speaking & listening with clear
“understanding”.
5. General Awareness
You should be well aware on “SPELT” (S – Social, P – Political, E – Economic, L –
Legal and T – Technological) surroundings.
6. Basic Managerial Skills
It starts at home and simply the magic of taking simple ‘decisions’ and ‘organizing’
the things at home. It includes decision making, problem solving and managerial
ability (PODSCORB):
P – Planning
O – Organizing
D – Directing
S – Staffing
CO – Coordinating
R – Reporting
B - Budgeting
7. Subject Knowledge
Be ‘selective’ & ‘intensive’ but very careful in choosing ‘major’ & ‘minor’ as per
one’s interest.
8. Work Experience
Use your spare time, use your contacts and get into various companies for ‘hands’ on
experience.
4
5. CONCLUSIONS
I would like to finish my discussion in the following words:
A.For Students
Just do not jump to any MBA / PGDM institute. Always go by ‘front’ door and if possible try
to crack only Top – 50 B-Schools.
B.For Owner
If you charge your students ‘heavily’ then it’s your ‘moral’ responsibility to equip them with
all modern facilities with excellent “placements”.
C.For Employers
In my words – Good Results and Good Institute means you are only ‘intelligent’ but not
‘creative’ BUT “Creative” people are definitely “intelligent”. Example – Tata, Ambani, Birla,
Dalmia, Bill Gates etc. If you are a real manager – the real ‘talent’ test is for you to convert a
‘Ass’ into a ‘Racing Horse’.
In fine, it’s my humble request from all ‘recruiters’ please visit ‘other’ B-School campus also
and I am sure you will definitely get 10% ‘Real’ talent better than any Top – 20 B-Schools.
Please do not go by their percentage in 10th
, 10+2, Graduation and Post graduation because
we all know very well that ups & downs is the parts of life which are momentary. Rather
devise your ‘Test’ in such a manner so that any candidate’s total caliber will be just before
you.

Because you might wake up one day, and realize that you have lost;
