Tennessee V. Garner Essay
Name:Tennessee v. Garner
Citation:No. 83 1035, 83 1070 (1985)
Facts:On October 3, 1974, Memphis Police Officers Hymon and Wright were dispatched to
answer a prowler inside call. When the police arrived at the scene, a neighbor gestured to the
house where she had heard glass breaking and that someone was breaking into the house. While
one of the officer radioed that they were on the scene, the other officer went to the rear of the
house hearing a door slam and saw someone run across the backyard. The suspect, Edward
Garner stopped at a 6 feet high fence at the edge of the yard and proceeded to climb the fence as the
police officer called out police, halt. The police officer figured that if Garner made it over the fence

It dismissed the claims against the defendants as being the mayor and Officer Hymon and the
Police Department as being the director for lack of evidence. Hymon s actions were then concluded
to being constitutional by being under the Tennessee statute. The Court of Appeals affirmed with
regard to Hymon, finding that he had acted accordingly to the Tennessee statute. The Court of
Appeals then reversed and remanded. It reasoned that the killing of a fleeing suspect is seizure
under the Fourth Amendment, and is therefore constitutional only if actions are reasonable. In this
case the actions were found not to be reasonable. Officers cannot use deadly force unless they have
probable cause that the suspect poses a serious threat to the officer or has committed a felony.
Issue:Garner, the suspect s father brought forth that his unarmed son was wrongfully shot by a
police officer as his son was fleeing from the burglary of an unoccupied house. He proposed a
wrongful death action under the federal civil rights statute against the police officer who fired the
shot, the police department and others.
Decision:The Court of Appeals reversed and filed a petition for certiorari. The Supreme Courtheld
that: (1) apprehension by use of deadly force is a seizure subject to the Fourth Amendment s
reasonableness requirement; (2) deadly force may not be used unless it is necessary to prevent the
escape and the officer has probable cause to believe that the suspect poses a

Radio Frequency Identification
In this day and age we have many ways of communicating with each other, or as some may say,
Tracking down one another. I can remember when I was younger talking in chat rooms on the
computer was so much fun and an awesome form of communication. Now we have letters,
vehicles, cell phones, computers, and several other ways to communicate. In this paper the
topic is an object known as the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip implant, which has
greatly affected our society. While the common conception before the technological advances
was that the chip was not for human use, the research that has been done on the RFID has
furthered its uses. Since everyone is entitled to their own opinion, we are going to have patrons
who support the RFID chip implant and those who do not which we will look into. Radio
Frequency Identification chip implant is an object that can be attached to or incorporated into a
product, animal, or person for the purpose of identification using radio waves (Smith 123). The
implant is a typical diameter of an injectable micromodule is 2 3 mm, and its length is 1 1.5 cm.
The shape is usually cylindrical to facilitate passage through a hypodermic needle (Troyk 179).

How Does Fox Build An Empire
By Joshua D. Copeland Fox is really building an Empire out of their new show (no pun
intended)... The Fox hit series Empire destroyed records and started trends after its first season.
Ever since its season 1 finale, the whole world has been fiening for a taste. Empire is the first
show from Fox to take over the world since The Cosby Show. The TV series has tapped into
giant broadcasters and networks all over the world. According to TheUrbanDaily.com: Empire is
now sold out in virtually every major territory worldwide. Big terrestrial broadcasters like

positions similar to Fox s in the U.S. have acquired the series. In the U.K., where U.S. shows

Points of View Commentary
Points of View Commentary
Points of View , written by Lucinda Roy, is a poem that features different points of view (as the
title suggests) on the subject of water: those of women collecting water in, what can be assumed
to be, an African country and those of a person living in a modernised (possibly a Western )
country. Furthermore, Roy seems to be critical of the aforementioned Western lifestyle and this
poem presents an underlying moral that everybody should be grateful for what they have,
regardless of how basic those things are. Roy s poem is comprised of two main stanzas; the first of
which details the women s daily struggle to provide water for their families. The term scoop up
evokes an image of a woman scooping up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is interesting how some of the narrator s Western like education seeps through into the stanza;
now, in contrast to the first stanza, there are terms such as the children jumping not through
water , but from element to element (air to water) and imagery of diamond drops shooting along
trajectories too long for me to measure , as opposed to the first stanza s fairly basic lexical
choice. Overall, this poem displays two different points of view surrounding water those of an
assumed Western woman and African woman (I feel that it is safe to assume that the narrator is
a woman, since there is a lot of references to women in the first stanza thus setting the tone for the
rest of the poem). As we can see, the two views are vastly different but it is as though the
narrator questions her own views of water and seeks answers from the people who value water
the most; something that would be a somewhat humbling experience, I m sure. Finally, I would
say that this poem is very relevant to today many people living in a Western country do seem to
take water for granted, and this poem seems very critical of that, as there are people who have to
struggle to obtain what is considered one of life s most basic

Bunsen Burner Lab Report
A potential risk that could be experienced throughout the experiment would be when sterilising the
glass spreader, which was done by using the Bunsen burner. If the process of sterilisation was not
done cautiously, or the Bunsen burner did not have the safety flame turned on, consequently, the
mistake of burning the skin or, the flamecatching fire with surrounding flammable objects.
Due to a Bunsen burner being incorporated into the experiment, long hair could be a major hazard,
and cause serious consequences with hair catching on fire if hair is not tied up away from the face.
If the Bunsen burner flame has been turned off and needed to be packed away, another risk would
be detaching the pipe from the gas tap. Consequently, if the gas taps are not turned off before
removing the Bunsen burner, gas could be released into the classroom.
Another potential risk could be coming into contact with the bacteria. Furthermore, this can spread
and cause an illness. This can happen if gloves, an apron, and any other safety equipment, are not
worn appropriately. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, when sterilising the glass spreader, it is to be done correctly and to be fully aware
of the flame. This also applies to when holding the equipment in the safest way possible, and can
be done by making sure the hand is positioned furthest away from the flame. When holding the
glass spreader over the Bunsen burner, it is unsafe to hold it over the flame continually. An
alternative and safer way of doing this would be to hold the glass spreader over the burner for a
couple of seconds, then to move it away, and repeat. It is also important that all flammable
equipment is kept away from the Bunsen

It is best to just wear a pair of black slacks, black dress shoes, and a white, black, or crГЁme colored

Leonid Frridman s Essay America Needs Its Nerds
In the passage, America Needs Its Nerds, by Leonid Fridman he develops his argument by using the
three pillars of literature: pathos, ethos and logos.
Firstly, in lines 20 23, 28 pathos was used to develop the author s argument about children who
prefers learning or creating things versus children who play sports. He used this as an example to
appeal to his readers emotions because these children who preferred invention over sports are
known as social outcasts and are ostracized for being intelligent or wanting to show off their talent.
The author was clearly showing his emotion in line 28 Enough is enough to get his readers to
understand the feeling by putting yourself in that child s position.
Second, ethos was used to try and convince

Beowulf Christian Or Pagan Essay
Is Beowulf a Christian or Pagan Hero? Throughout the story of Beowulf, the great warrior does
many things for many reasons. The question is, does he do these things as a Christian hero with
god in mind, or does he do it as a Pagan hero, for fame and wealth. In the epic, Beowulf battles
against three noteworthy monsters that had their fights detailed in more than a passing mention
such as the many battles and wars that he fought in. These three monsters are Grendel, Grendel s
mother, who was not named, and the Dragon. Beowulf, when contrasted with these Pagan monsters,
appears Christian. However, the first question we must ask is are the monsters Pagan? To answer
this question, we will look at each monster individually and find as many... Show more content on

Grendel is described as Like a man but mightier than any man. (55) From this, we can assume
that he has a humanoid shape, walks on two legs, has two arms, a head, and a torso, but is taller,
stronger, and mightier than any normal man. He is not described in the text physically, but by
the traits and qualities that he exhibits. One such quote says that he is bearing God s hatred, (30)
and believed in his own strength, not the strength of God, whose love Grendel could not know.
(10) From these two quotes alone, we can infer that Grendel is definitely not Christian, as he does
not have faith in God s strength or help. From other quotes, we can further prove that he is Pagan
by using examples of several Pagan qualities that Grendel shows. From the quotes So set on
murder, (8) and alone, bloodthirsty, and horrible (9) we can see that he is quite bloodthirsty and
murderous, both of which are more Pagan than Christian qualities. Through this information,
Grendel exhibits the Pagan qualities of not believing in the strength of god, but instead believing in
one s own strength. He also lusts after blood, and lives for himself making him a Pagan

What Does Light Symbolize In Macbeth
In the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, an effective technique is the use of symbolism
throughout the text. This technique helped me to understand the important message of; evil over
good and the lust for power. The weather, symbolism of blood and of light vs dark helped me to
understand the main idea of evil. This play discusses the idea that all of us have evil inside of us,
although unlike Macbethmost of us don t choose to act upon such evil, and that committing evil will
always turn out bad for you.
One aspect of symbolism in the play that shows evil doesn t do any good is that of the weather. At
the very beginning of the play when the audience first meets the witches they are discussing the
weather; when shall we three meet again In thunder, lightning, or in rain? With this... Show more

Whenever a murder is done it is at night time so that it is dark. Come seeling night Macbeth
says. He says this dialogue on the evening before he murders Duncan, he feels guilty about the
evil his is about to commit. I think Shakespeare uses this technique of symbolising light vs dark
to show the audience how Macbeth is feeling towards all this evil he is committing. Terrible
deeds are always to be committed in the dark. This is shown by the dialogue stars, hide your
fires; let not light see my black and deep desires . Macbeth doesn t want there to be stars in the
sky because he doesn t want them to shine their light on his evil and murderous thoughts.
Shakespeare purposely uses the darkness to show the audience what Macbeth is about to do. In
the light of the day we feel safe, but in the darkness we fear it because we don t know what is
there that we cannot see. Most of the play is set in the dark which reflects on Macbeth s evil
thoughts and actions throughout the play. The Jacobeans know that Scotland is no longer safe
because it falls into and endless darkness with all Macbeths evil

Land In The Grapes Of Wrath
John Steinbeck s The Grapes of Wrath is one of the most well know and important novels in
American Literature. The Grapes of Wrath shows the economic hardship that the Dust Bowl
brought to farmers on the Southern Plains. The Dust Bowl was caused by a drought and forced
tenant farmers (farmers who occupy and farm land that is owned by someone else) to leave their
land and head west in search for work. One of the most important themes of the novel is the great
significance of land and its role in the lives of the tenant farmers. Many characters in the novel
reveal their attachment to the land in Oklahoma and its dominating role in their lives. Steinbeck
uses the character Grampa to explore the prevalent theme of the importance of land to the... Show

Steinbeck compares Grampa to a frantic, mischievous, and impatient child who, drank too much
when he could get it, ate too much when it was there, talked too much all the time, (Steinbeck

and shows that he s not giving up anytime soon. The same applies to the remaining tenant
farmers. The farmers are hopeful for rains to come and end the drought so that they can start
planting again. The end of the drought would mark the end of their distress and the insurance that
they could stay on their land. Like the Joads, many families stayed on the land for as long as
possible hoping for an end to their turmoil. Many of the evicted families probably would have
waited out the drought if it were not for the forced removal by the big landowners and companies.
Just like the tenant farmers of the Southern Plains were persistent and unrelenting to give up on
their land, Grampa tries not to surrender to old

Does The Meaning Of Still Make Lemonade Taste Like A...
Dave Matthews sweetly sings it best through the lyrics from his band s song, American Baby , If
these walls came crumblin down/ Fell so hard, to make us lose our faith/ From what s left you d
figure it out/ Still make lemonade taste like a sunny day This song, through metaphor, touches on
how America has been through so much, so much that at times they are lost. But the American
people have shown, they have worked, they have fought for not only a better futurebut a better
meaning of what America is. Although, it has taken a little more than possessing the will to fight
though. It has taken hope and still does today. It is with America s never ending hope that has
inspired their nation in the pastand inspires them today to work and create a better future. They have
prevailed through all the timestopping wars, all the uncalculated mistakes, and all the prolonged
roadblocks. They the people have made it past and have gotten stronger because of hope. And
because of hope, their country s lemonade will hopefully still taste like a sunny day .
From the very beginning of American history, a prologue was presented of what was to come for
the new nation. During the Revolutionary War where the colonies, that had settled in America,
battled for their independence to become their own and be finally free from the heavy hand of
Britain. Actually, when all the facts get laid out, the Americans had so much against them and

Narrative Essay About Disneyland
My summer was really great this year, we went to Disneyland for my brother and I s birthday. It
was a really long drive to get to the Disney hotel that we were staying at, but it was totally worth
the wait though. While we were driving we saw a bunch of beautiful and fascinating things. We
left earlier in the Morning so we got to see the sunrise, and let me tell you, it was amazing, one of
the prettiest things I had ever seen. We stopped by a few places at the beginning of our trip so
we could pick up some snacks to eat on the way. My brother, Kristopher, fell asleep within the
first hour we were driving. I was listening to music, looking out the window, and snacking on a
small bag of Takis. My dad surprised us on the way when we went to go eat pizza from Little
Caesars. I know that doesn t sound like much of a surprise but I absolutely love Little Caesars
pizza. I probably like it more than most people to be honest. We finished most of our pizza
taking the leftover pieces with us back to the car. I was feeling pretty tired so I dozed off while
listening to Shawn Mendes. I woke up to a louder song blasting through my headphones. I
turned down my volume and switched the song. I checked my Google Maps and it said that we
were about halfway to the park. After than I checked my Snapchat and opened a Snap from

The Significance of the French Revolution and the Ensuing...
Discuss the significance of the French Revolution and the ensuing Napoleonic State on the
formation of nation states in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
The French revolution was an event of epic proportions. At the outset, alike the English Civil Wars,
an autocratic monarch (Louis XVI) summoned Parliament, in France Estates General, in order to
demand funds and prerogatives. The outcome became very similar to the English Civil Wars; the
Third Estate rebelled (in England it was Parliament though), overthrew the monarchy, the King was
executed, a republic was founded and kingship outlawed in the process. Nevertheless, even though
the English Civil Wars and the French Revolution bear resemblances, they are very separate ...

The consequences would be devastating in the twentieth century.
Also, the successes in the battlefield would be significant on the spreading of new ideas and forms
of government; the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, the metric system, the
introduction of Civil marriage, and the Napoleonic Code. Many of these principles are still in use
in our day.
When Napoleon assumed total control of the French state, he sought to expand French influence.
Indisputably, Napoleon was a gifted commander in chief; France s military was well organised,
adequately equipped and capably led. Unsurprisingly, the French established their military
hegemony in Europe. Napoleon played the role of kingmaker and amended the political landscape
according to his views. He terminated the Holy Roman Empire, redistributed land (for instance
Bavaria greatly benefited and Poland was given independence), Ironically, when Napoleon was
defeated by monarchies fighting to reinstitute the ancien regime in France, the ancien regime was
not fully reinstated. Many states preferred to keep the new administrative and legal frameworks;
the French legacy was maintained as it was more efficient. (Emsley et al, p. 24 25, 2011).
The French Revolution and the Napoleonic Empire reintroduced the concept of elections in the
form of plebiscites for nationwide political affairs; Napoleon himself cleverly used the media and
military bulletins to augment his standing with the French nation. The difference

Role Of Death In Tim O Brien s So It Go
So it goes, is a phrase that boggled my mind, ever since it was first mentioned in the book. A
phrase that can have many different meanings, but yet it is only three words. The phrase So it
goes, was used after every death, making them all equal. What even shocked me, is that Billy was
calm when talking about death. Implying that there was nothing he could do to stop it, and it would
happen to the best of us. In my opinion, the phrase So it goes, represents the idea that the
Tralfamadorians had in which a person may be dead at an instance, but is still alive in the memories
of others. It had also represented anti war beliefs that the author had, because of the bombing of
Dresden. At the same time though, the repetition of the phrase keeps a tally of the cumulative force
of death throughout the novel, thus pointing out the tragic inevitability of death.... Show more

In fact, the only reason he had reasons to believe in the phrase So it goes, is because he was
unstuck in time, the bombing of dresden, and his life experiences such as the plane crash. Billy
always thought of life as simple after the war. He explains decades of his life in just a sentence.
He recovers, marries a woman, has children, and then becomes a wealthy optometrist. However,
based off past descriptions of the war, I can infer that Billy was traumatized during it. The
instance he had with the Lazzaro that promised to kill him, would also be traumatizing as well.
So it goes, is a phrase that dismisses the idea of a perfect world, where no war occurs, and insists
that war will happen, whether or not anyone tries to stop

Social Problems
According to Ferreira (2005:86), four elements may be discerned when attempting to define a
social problem. The four elements are: a pressure (influential) group; a social condition; a set of
values and norms; and collective action.
Taking these four elements as building blocks the following definition of a social problem may be
arrived at: A social condition, known to a pressure group as posing a threat to current values and
norms, that requires collective action to rectify (Pretorius, Le Roux, Lesufi, Liebenberg, Martin
Rautenbach Zegeye in Ferreira 2005:87).
In the sections that follow I will attempt to clarify each one of the four elements that constitute the
definition of a social problem.
The crux of the matter here regards ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Today, Africas rate of urbanization is second to none (Tibaijuka in de Beer, du Plessis,
Liebenberg Moloi 2005:116). At the eve of independence, during the 60 s for a handful of African
countries, urbanization, in most cases, was well sought after (social condition). Western powers had
developed following paths of industrialization and urbanization and the same was thought possible
in Africa (pressure groups). The basic tenants of this assumption went as follows: Capital
distributed from the West to Africa was to be invested in industrial enterprises in centers that
wielded political power. This newly found industry would promote manufacturing and encourage
domestic savings. Jobs would be created and the capital accumulated reinvested in development
projects (de Beer et al 2005: 115 125). And thus, by following this path Africa would become self
sufficient (values and norms).
However, five decades later Africa has failed to develop as rapidly or to the extent to which the
West has. Urban poverty escalates daily. A handful of problems face the African city: insufficient
provision of jobs, poorly delivered public services, a weakening revenue base, and escalating
pollution levels. According to de Beer et al. (2005:116 117), it is projected that by 2030 half of
Africa s population will have become urbanized, most of whom will live in poverty (social
problem).
There are some solutions on offer. Urban agriculture, albeit somewhat controversial, has

A Report on the Pauline Epistles
Over the course of the thirteen Pauline epistles, the author (presumably Paul) instructs his readers
regarding not only the proper functioning of a marriage and family, but he also uses the concept
and codes of familial life to describe the duties and experiences of a Christian. Thus, one cannot
consider the epistles teachings on marriageand the family without considering how these
descriptions of the family are integrated into the larger ideological framework produced by the
letters, and as such any examination of marriage and family in the Pauline epistles must begin with
an investigation into the larger role of gender, patriarchy, and familial discourse in these epistles.
Doing this allows one to understand how the Pauline epistles, while ostensibly arguing for a more
equitable distribution of power between the sexes than might have existed at the time of its writing
nevertheless inscribes male dominance into Christianityby favoring the husband above all others,
both literally and figuratively. The Pauline epistles were written to churches and early Christians
who were struggling not only to nurture their new found faith, but also to outline and clearly
demarcate the standards and regulations of that. As the promise of Christianity seemed to call for
the abandonment of many of the social and moral codes that had governed people s lives for
centuries, a distinctive need arose for clear cut answers to questions regarding the proper role of
family members as well as

Richard Nixon s Involvement In Vietnam
Many people think that all Nixon did in his presidency was the watergate scandal, but in reality he
helped stop Americans fighting in the Vietnam War. When Richard Nixon started in Office he was
faced with the difficult task of trying to pull all US troops out of Vietnam. He decided to use a
tactic he created called Vietnamization. The simple plan was to strengthen South Vietnam so they
could fight the war by themselves. The plan involved many small steps which helped finally end
our involvement in January 1973. The War was highly disliked by many Americans. This split
America up and caused divisions in America. Richard Nixonended US involvement in the Vietnam
war by using the strategy of Vietnamization. Richard Nixon was the 37th President of the United
Statesof America. He was also the only president to resign from office. Nixon was born on
January 9,1913 in Yorba Linda, CA. Nixon s parents were Francis A. Nixon and Hannah Milhous

devoted Quaker. Richard Nixon had four brothers. He went to Whittier College and Duke

Downfalls of Losing Yourself in the Arms of Another Essay
In this essay, I will be analyzing Dreamland by Sarah Dessen for feminist themes. Sarah Dessen
is not a self proclaimed feminist, but this book does have topics that relate strongly to feminism.
It is a book about intimate partner violence, family dynamics, and a girl s journey to self
discovery. It starts out as a typically books where a female meets a bad boy , but things soon take
a dangerous turn. It shows how power and control in relationships can be very unhealthy, and also
focuses the blame on the perpetrator, instead of the victim like many other books fall in the trap of.
The book also, like most, has some downfalls, most clearly is the lack of diversity within the
characters. While this book might not be intentionally feminist,... Show more content on

Caitlin described her mother as the emotion of the family, while the father was the fact keeper.
Women s Voices, Feminist Visions describe a traditional marriage as the husband providing the
family wage and the wife will take primary responsibility for the home and children (WV, FV

away, but once she did things changed. Caitlin s mother was not focused on Caitlin at all,
instead searching continuously for Cass while ignoring the house and Caitlin. Caitlin s father
expressed more interest in Caitlin s whereabouts, but mostly focused on the mother and trying to
help her. The relationship between Rogerson and Caitlin started out strangely. They met at a
party, where she was expected to hang out with her cheerleader friends and flirt with football
players. However when she saw drug dealer Rogerson, she knew that being with him would
change the course of her life, because it was completely new territory, something that her sister
Cass would never of done. In the beginning, the power between the couple was very evident.
Rogerson picked her up from her house, chose where to go, and what they would do. Caitlin
constantly was amazed by how smart Rogerson was and loved the new things he made her feel.
Their relationship illustrated a very realistic view of the cycle of abuse. It showed the tension

Hoosiers Analysis
Hoosiers is a film about second chances. It s about a small town basketball team making a
comeback from their loosing streak with the help of their new head coach. The Hickory Huskers
begin their season with new coach Norman Dale, whose coaching techniques rile up the
townspeople and parents. He arrives at the school being a decade out of coaching the game and
having a troubled past. Coach Dale is thrown many challenges with the townspeople not trusting
him, the teams best playernot playing and the fact that the small town team is overmatched.
However, his optimism, motivation and toughness helped gain the loyalty of the team and the
attention of the town.
According to the film, Hickory, Indiana is a place where basketball players are treated like gods .
The town takes basketball very seriously, it is literally a way of life for them. The Hickory
Huskers may not be the best team in the area, but the community is very supportive of the team.
Every week the whole town comes together for the games to cheer on the Hickory Huskers and
the townspeople have meeting to try coming up with solutions to help better their performance.
However, the towns approach is aggressive and their strategies to win are different from Coach
Dales. For example, a group of men from the town barge into one of the team s practices and
criticize Coach Dale that they should be practicing with the ball instead of doing strength exercises.
Coach Dale believed that for the team to improve he needed to

They have attacked several parts of the world, killing everyone they come across, mainly the
Christians. In the novel The Road by Cormac McCarthy had something very horrible happen that
made the world as we know it go away. Very few people were still alive during the novel and
created a great deal of drama in the novel. They happened to come across challenges from trying
to get food, keeping warm, and also running from the bad guys. The novel never said what exactly
happened, but the readers have many questions regarding what happened. Was there some kind of
global natural disaster? Did an asteroid collide into the earth? All the plant life was dead. The
readers consider these questions because places were scorched to the ground by a fire. They know
how to get through their problems, even if it is a matter of killing someone to protect each other.

kidnapped by men who trick, threaten and seduce them into working in the sex trade. The Pimps
most of the time threatens to kill their families and/or children. Pimps seduce and make these
young girls fall in love, then those boyfriends or fiancГ©s pretend they are taking these girls to

job maybe in a different city or even in a different country. With them wanting a better paying job or
future they agree on taking the job not knowing they will be forced to prostitution. Some women are
forced to see 30 to 60 men a day, some clients being police men. With clients being police men,
the women believe they have no one to run to for help. They feel trapped thinking of the danger
they can put their families in and knowing they can t trust anyone to help them. Only 17 of the
3,000 to 5,000 pimps in Tenancingo were convicted in Mexico between 2010 2013. There are an
estimated 20,000 trafficking victims in Mexico every year.
A kidnaper knows that they can sell a bag of drugs only once, but they can prostitute a young

Ulcerative Proctitis
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease of the large intestine where the inner
lining of the colon becomes inflamed and develops tiny open sores, or ulcers, that produces pus or
mucous and may cause bleeding. It affects the innermost lining of the large intestine and the
rectum. The rectum is always involved in ulcerative colitis. When inflammationonly occurs in the
rectum, the disease is called ulcerative proctitis. If the inflammation extends into the upper parts of
the colon and the whole colon is involved, it is called universal proctitis or pancolitis (Christian
Novdqvist). Swelling causes the bowel to move its contents quickly and evacuate frequently. It
rarely affects the small intestine.

The most common symptoms include rectal bleeding, rectal pain, abdominal pain, and the urgency
to defecate. Symptoms include variability depending on the extent of the inflammation and its
location. Most people have periods of remission that can last weeks or years (NIDDK).
The diagnosis of this condition is insinuated by the symptoms of rectal bleeding, abdominal
bleeding, and diarrhea. The doctor must rule out other possible causes. Some tests may include a
stool test to check for infection, a blood test to reveal what the white blood cell count is, a
colonoscopy to examine the rectum and inside of the colon, and a barium enema x ray. A medical
and family history also aids in diagnosis.
There is no cure for ulcerative colitis, only medications to reduce symptoms or surgical
intervention. The type of medication depends on the seriousness of the condition. Medications help
induce and maintain remission, improve one s quality of life, and minimize the side effects and the
risk of cancer (NIDDK). Surgery is reserved for those with severe inflammation and life threatening
complications. A procedure called ileoanal anastomosis constructs a pouch from the end of the
small intestine and directly attaches it to the anus, allowing one to expel wastes normally (Mayo

Implementation Of A Performance Management System
T Service Desk Performance
Introduction
This paper is a discussion of the implementation of a performance management system in an
information technology service desk organization. The paper starts with an introduction of the
organization and the nature of the problem being addressed with a performance management
solution. It continues with an analysis of three separate performance management approaches, and
a recommendation of the best approach for addressing the problem outlined. Next, a discussion of
the performance management goals and objectives occurs. The project implementation process
including defining the project structure, executing a communication plan, and identifying and
mitigating potential risks and issues is then covered. Finally, the paper concludes with the
discussion of an evaluation and reporting program implemented to monitor the performance
management program.

because it impacts everyone whether they are seeking medical attention or the person providing it.

What Does Twas Warm At First-Like Us Mean
Twas Warm Once Like Us
Emily Dickinson is one of the world s most well known poets. In the world of Literature her
name is never hard to find within the classroom. Emily Dickinson has a very distinct style which
sets her apart from other poets. Dickinson s poem Twas warm at first like us is one of her widely
known poems and it reflects her signature style. The dreary and impersonal description of a cadaver
catches the attention of the reader making it a favorite to many. Emily Dickinson s poem Twas warm
once like us captures Dickinson s unique style and shows a truth about the coldness of death
through the use of diction, tone, and imagery.
Dickinson s poem begins with an unspoken but rather important question. [I]Twas warm at first
like us , (Dickinson) the question one must ask himself, is: What is it ? The answer is revealed
later in the poem as the words describe different cold and freezing parts of a body. Emily
Dickinson chooses the word [i]t rather than he or she to show the sharp contrast between something
that is human, and something that is now only a lifeless object. The impersonal word also contains
Dickinson s style. Dickinson often uses impersonal diction most likely because of her inability to

Hypocritical Tendencies in Chaucer s Canterbury Tales Essay
In the Canterbury Tales, Chaucer introduces a variety of characters with a multitude of
personalities. From the despicable Summoner to the abrasive Miller, these characters are created
with their own personalities and their own human failings. One common fault that characters share
is hypocrisy. From pretending to be wealthy to cheating the poor out of money, hypocritical
tendencies are abundant in the Canterbury Tales. Throughout the story, Chaucer ridicules the
human criticizes the human failing of hypocrisy through the examples of the Pardoner, the
Merchant, and the Friar.
One character Chaucer uses to ridicule hypocrisy is the Pardoner. Throughout the description of the

The Merchant portrays himself to be a financial expert in order to hide his poverty: This
estimable Merchant so had set his wits to work, none knew he was in debt... (104, 289 290).
Although the Merchant gives plenty of opinions on finances, he is a prime example of
hypocrisy in that he gives advice that he cannot follow. The Friar is one of the biggest examples
of hypocrisy in the story. Throughout the Friar s description, he is shown to take advantage of
his position and shun his duties to benefit himself. Instead of conforming to the poor lifestyle of
traditional friars, Chaucer s Friar manipulates people into giving him money and then pockets it
for himself. One way he takes advantage of his position is by charging people for confessions:
Sweetly he heard his penitents at shrift with pleasant absolution, for a gift (103, 225 226). He
also makes money by being an excellent beggar, as shown in the quote: He was the finest beggar
of his batch...For though a widow mightn t have a shoe, so pleasant was his holy how d ye do
he got his farthing from her just the same... (103, 259 261). The Friar also rejects his duties by
refusing to associate with the needy, as described in the passage: It was not fitting with the dignity
of his position, dealing with a scum of wretched lepers; nothing good can come of dealings with the

Famine In Ireland In The 1800 s
In the early 1800 s, relations between Ireland and England were tense. The English were building
their support by enforcing plantations, pieces of land that once belonged to indigenous Catholic
Irish and putting the ownership to the incoming settlers from England and Scotland. Therefore, the
impoverished Irish rented their land out from the wealthier owners who resided miles and miles
away. In the 1800 s, the majority of Irelandwas dependant on potatoes, as it was cheap and easy to
grow for the enormous poor population that resided there. In 1845, toxic disease spread through all
of Europe s potatoes, greatly affecting the Irish, who were enormously dependent on the crop.

It can be argued that the reason the government failed to react as it should in time of crisis is
because of the widespread belief of laissez faire. This argument is flawed, as the strict rules
against the government s invasion of personal matters were broken on numerous occasions to
benefit the British landlords, who hired the police force to guard the ports while ships full of
food left a starving Ireland. John Mitchel, the leader of the Young Ireland Movement, wrote the
following in 1860: The British Prime Minister had violated every pledge previously made on
arriving at place and power... but the pity was that the minister was permitted to act so with
impunity (NJCHE 4). The twisted version of laissez faire that had corrupted the government was
so normal and such a popular opinion, that they were accumsed to the prominent wrongs the
leaders were invoking on the Irish people. Not only that, but there was an unspoken agreement that
the concept of laissez faire was only a strict policy when concerning the Irish, but when regarding
the British people there was extreme flexibility. Furthermore, Kinealy, in her book The Great
Calamity, wrote, The underlying philosophy of the relief efforts was that they should be kept to a

Quest for Identity in The Life of Galileo by Brecht
Throughout the course of history, from era to era, mankind has been on a continuous attempt to
perpetuate what they perceive as the truth; and in doing so, embark on a quest to find their true
identity and place in life. One must realize that the common theme in all literature is the search for
identity and belonging. Bertolt Brecht, author of The Life of Galileo, effectively uses the
developing character Galileo Galilei to portray a strong message; a message which five hundred
years after the fact has still not been completely comprehended. Through Galileo s continuous battle
with the Church in prevailing his work, Brecht is telling the readers that in any one man s attempt ...

Development and change are issues which the church fears due to the fact that advancement
undermine the strength of the chruch when changes are brought to religion. The church s opinion
and attitude towards Galileo s discoveries are clearly outlined by Sagredo on Pg. 23 as he states:
Do you think the Popes will hear your truth and say Wonderful, I m wrong. Do you think he ll
even listen to you? ...When I saw you just now, at the telescope, looking at your new stars I saw
you standing on burning logs. When I heard you say I believe in reason I smelt burnt flesh. (Brecht
23)
What Brecht is telling us through the use of Galileo and his stubborn and persistent need to
present his findings, is that even though one is presented with adversities, in Galileo s case, the
church, one must continue to use reason to spread the truth. In any case, Galileo believes that
religion does not necessarily have to be sacrificed in order to advance a society in terms of
technology. At this point in the play, he believes that the use of reason can overcome any obstacle
in the attempt to prevail the truth; in a sense, what Brecht is telling the readers through Galileo s
stance against the church is that the ability to think, innovate, and propagate the truth are the key
requirments that will enhance our society. In this case, Galileo is faced time and time again with
adversaries that tell him to stop what he is

Essay on Dbq- Era of Good Feelings
During the early 1800 s France and Britain were at war and for many years America remained
neutral. But, Great Britain began seizing American ships and impressing the Americans into the
British Navy. In addition, Great Britain was supplying the Native Americans in North America
with guns and, as a result America declared war on Britain in 1812. The phrase Era of Good
Feelings was used to describe the administrations of Munroe in 1816 but the validity of this
phrase is questioned. Many people might believe that the period after the war of 1812 was an Era
of Good Feelings because of the nation s gain of nationalism and expansion of the country, but it
was not because of growing sectionalism and state issues. After the War of 1812,... Show more

This tariff was created to protect American factories in the north and was a tax placed on
imported goods. But the south was highly upset because they felt that this tariff only supported
the north and they had to pay it also. Document F also sheds light on sectionalism because
Jefferson talks about a geographic line that fills him with terror, also known as the 36,30 line
created by Henry Clay. This line determined if the upcoming states from the Louisiana Territory
would have slavery or not. The issue of slavery was a major player in the growth of sectionalism
between the north and the south. Moreover, the government had problems with the states.
Maryland wanted to tax the national bank which led to the case of McCulloch v. Maryland that
was sent to the Supreme Court (Document D).Similarly are the revolts seen in Document G
which resulted in throwing 50 60 leaders from South Carolina in jail but there were still
prisoners stating that there are enough people to carry the work into execution. Overall, the
America had too much problems on their hands to be going through an Era of Good Feelings .
All in all, the period after the War of 1812 may seem to be an Era of Good Feelings because of
nationalism and westward expansion, but in fact it was not because of increasing sectionalism and
state issues. As a result of winning the War of 1812 against Great Britain,

Car Manufacturers And The Automotive Industry
Abstract
Car manufacturers and the automotive industry as a whole have been shifting gears towards
producing more electric and hybrid vehicles due to the harm fuel engine vehicles are causing to
the people and environment. This research report describes and clarifies how electric vehicles
work as well as comparing them to fuel engine vehicles. The report lists key metrics for electric
vehicles (advantages, disadvantages, effect on the environment, etc.) in addition to sharing the
different views of scientists and engineers regarding harm and benefits of owning an electric vehicle
. A successful electric carcompany, Tesla Motors, Inc., was used in this report to illustrate a
successful example on how the financials look like. Finally, a ... Show more content on

As car manufacturers continue to innovate at a rapid rate, many attempts to produce practical
electric cars have occurred and continue to occur.
The purpose of this report is to describe the technology used to manufacture an electric vehicle and
explain why it is better than an internal combustion engine. It includes reasons why the electric
vehicle has grown rapidly and how it became a requirement to a better world. The research report
compares the electric engine to the internal combustion engine vehicle as well as shedding some
light on the future of electric cars.
A Brief History of Electric Vehicles In the early 1930s, Robert Anderson invented the first
electric vehicle in Scotland, in addition to the first basic electric carriage. Americans started
paying attention to electric vehicles in 1895, right after A.L. Ryker built an electric tricycle and
William Morrison built a six passenger wagon. The production and use of the electric car started
in the 1920s due to a better road system, reduction in gasoline prices, and most importantly, the
mass production of fuel engine cars. In the 60s and 70s, electric vehicles reemerged due to the
environmental damage fuel engine cars had created for people (Belis, n.d.(a)). Electric vs. Fuel

Police Brutality in Anywhere, USA Essay
After our marching band s performance at a football game was cancelled because of lightning,
about six or seven of the band members (including a few student leaders) sat around shooting the
breeze, not fighting, not smoking, not drinking, not being loud. An unmarked police car rolled up
and our conversation stopped as we turned our attention to him.
In an acrid and condescending tone, the policeman pointed a finger to the exit of the parking lot
and said, Out.
Okay, just give us a moment to figure out what we can do, we replied. We wondered if Friendly s
was still open, and asked the officer, who gave us a cold look.

My friend and I, both student leaders, got out of the car to address the situation.
The officer, frantic and quite enraged at his own idiocy, pointed a menacing finger at me, Let me
see your ID.
Why do want to see my ID? I asked, because I was the passenger.
Let me see your ID! he demanded. I asked why again, reminding him that it was a legitimate
question. Getting the same non answer, I started to hand him my license. He all but ripped it from
my hand.
And may I have your name? I asked. He is Detective X.
A fine representation of the Marching Knights you are! he yelled. I must have missed the meeting
that decided nothing cordial will be said by, and no questions will be asked of, an officer of the
law. Even though my parents pay him his salary, he is above acting like a decent human being.
His last name sounded familiar. I should have known better than to ask if I knew his son. The
officer s eyes widened and he yelled, You leave my family out of this! I guess that was his way of
saying yes.
As three more police cars showed up, Officer X instructed everyone to go home except for me
and my friend. He said he knew everyone had junior licenses and would be out past curfew, when
actually the only one who did was rear ended by a cop, which caused him to stay out way past
curfew (nice irony). Officer X also suggested, very rudely, that a

Marc Lewis Reflection
Critical Thinking Assignment #3 Since I have been reading the life of Marc Lewis I find myself
always becoming more and more excited about what is going to happen next. So far it has been
filled with ups and down and me trying to predict what will happen next on his journey. While
reading chapter 6 I was so elated that Marc had gotten accepted to college, it seems as though he
actually has a plan for himself and is determined to exceed every goal. But normally good things
don t always last for a time and for some reason I could sense that something was about to
happen. For those of us who were not given the opportunity to have a silver spoon in their mouth
or even those who had the spoon but chose not to use it acquire a different meaning in life.
Growing up I lived in the projects, with drug dealers and snotty nosed kids who only aspiration
when they grew up was to get out of the projects. Thankfully at a young age I was adopted by my
grandparents and just like Marc Lewis a new door opened and I was finally given a chance at
life itself. I truly believe that when people are presented with things that inspire them to do
better or be better then they will change their attitude on everything. They begin to create dreams
of being successful, studious and eventually become so set in their goals that even when things
go bad they choose not to focus on them because of the complete turnaround they just achieved.
Although marc seemed to be doing great I could tell that he didn t want to do the complete
turnaround, I say this because he was still smoking hash, it was evident that it had become apart
of his new lifestyle whether he actually wanted it to or not. He began to put a phosaude, almost
like when you re high around your parents and try to act as normal as possible. He said that the
trick is to balance anxiety and ecstasy and in all honesty I had no clue to what he was trying to
say. The psychedelic drugs caused his thoughts to go from normal thoughts like what he wanted to
eat or buy and would quickly change to his possible enemies such as customers, children and
President Ronald Reagan. Psychedelic drugs cause people to hallucinate and become in and out of
consciousness. I know a few people who have

NURSING PRAXIS My Personal Nursing Theory of Practice: A Model of Nursing Praxis Oseni
O. Abiri University of South Alabama, Mobile, Alabama The gap in the demand and supply for
healthcare services in the US and around the world are believed to facilitate the development of
advance practice nursing (APN) (Kilpatrick, 2008) and this is the motivation for my pursuance of
an APN (i.e. NP) degree. The factors contributing to this gap and facilitating the development of
APN include physicians shortage, cost containment, etc. In the United States of America, there are
four functional roles for APN clinical nurse specialist (CNS), nurse practitioner (NP), certified
registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) and certified nurse midwife (CNMW). My chosen role is the
Advanced Emergency Nursing (AEN) (which is the combination of family nurse practitioner (FNP)
and acute nurse practitioner (ACNP)). As an NP, I am training to provide nursing and medical care
to meet the complex needs of patients, their families and the communities they live and interact
with a holistic focus in both primary and acute care settings. I am therefore expected to improve
patients, families and communities health through effective, integrated and coordinated care,
contribute to the body of nursing knowledge and practice; and advance the field of nursing through

Presidential Election Process Of The United States
Presidential Election Process The election process in the United States can be overwhelming and
confusing. Firstly, how a citizen can be eligible to become a Presidential candidate? What are the
requirements or the qualifications that a person needs to be a candidate? With that in mind, the
candidates get to sponsor for their electoral campaigns from what type of funds and from whom?
People need to know the type of character that a candidate demonstrates. America has become very
demanding. There are a lot of things that consume our lives and we are not giving enough
importance to the ElectionsProcess. The U.S. Census found that only 47 percent of eligible adults
with family incomes of less than $20,000 a year voted in the 2012 presidential election, compared to
80 percent of those whose earnings exceeded $100,000. Overall, only 19 percent of likely voters
come from families with incomes of less than $30,000 a year, even though that same group
comprises 46 percent of nonvoters. Americans should get more involved in the election process for
our democracy to continue because only a certain part of the population vote and get involved in the
process. The United Statesis a hectic place to live; many people say they are too busy to wait in
line to vote. A survey executed by the California Voter Foundation (CVF) found, that there are 6.4
million Californians who are eligible but unregistered to vote. As well, 28% of infrequent voters
and 23% of those unregistered said they do

Solving The Costs And Benefits For Each Of Our Options
Eric Chien
GESM 120 _35386
Paper #1/ Topic #1
To be rational is to understand and calculate the costs and benefits for each of our options and
make the decision that maximizes the value and utility of of self interest. However, humans often
behave irrationally due to our emotions, morality and desire for immediate pleasure. Given the
above depiction, Dan Ariely argues that we will be acting irrational if we don t commit acts of
thievery since the expected benefits of committing the act obviously outweighs the cost given that
nobody would find out . His definition of rationality is more or less similar to what most economists
believe in, which is making decisions strictly based on the highest grossing financial benefits.
Therefore, under his definition of rationality and irrationality, we would be acting irrational by
succumbing to our morality and conscience, and not commit the act that would bring us the most
economic benefits. Under his assumption, there is no cost or risk of committing acts of thievery,
then to be rational under his definition would be to steal whatever there is out there as it s
practically the same thing as drinking water from a public water fountain.
However, putting Plato s views in the picture, Plato would certainly argue against the claim that
Ariely has proposed. This traces all the way back to the discussion about the value and necessity
of justice in our lives. In Book IX of the Republic, Plato points out and argues for the value and

authenticity of the man William Shakespeare. My opinion on the matter is that SHakespeare is the
true author due to information I have learned through my life, knowing that there was a man
named William SHakespeare who was part of the Lord CHamberlain s Men, an acting troop
meaning Shakespeare had knowledge of the entertainment business. To start my research I looked
for websites that expressed the opinions people had on the many theories that contradict
Shakespeare s authorship. As I searched I came across websites that deem to be reliable and

candidate. We travel through De Vere s life, he was born in 1550, attended two prestige colleges.
The piece compares and contrasts Shakespeare and Edward De Vere, contrasting their levels of
education. Shakespeare only attended elementary, where as De Vere attended two colleges
making him to be the more realistic and qualified person who was able to write thirty seven
brilliant plays. Jameson writes about De Vere being a traveler especially traveling to Italy in the
year 1575 being circumstantial to the fact fourteen of Shakespeare s plays take place in Italy. De
Vere is said to have lived with known Shakespeare s influence for his writing, Arthur Golding. Lee

Jack Welch was born on November 19, 1935 in Salem, Massachusetts ( Thought Leader ). His
father, John Francis Welch, Sr. was a conductor with the Boston Maine Railroad. His mother,
Grace Andrews Welch, was a housewife. Welch has said that his mother was the most important
influence on him, cheering him on in sports and academics, and always encouraging him to
strive for more. Competitive and outspoken even as a child, he was known among his friends as
an expert negotiator as well as a diehard opponent. He and his friends converted and excavated
gravel pits into a park where they played fiercely competitive games; they called it the Pit. Jack
Welch excelled academically as well. In school, Welch played several sports, including hockey,
golf, and baseball.
He was a Junior Rotarian, senior class treasurer, and a member of the Student Council. He was
voted most talkative and noisiest boy by his classmates, and in a high school literary magazine he
named his repressive desire as to make a million. Welch did not win the Navy ROTC scholarship
for which he was nominated, and he had to put aside his dreams for going to Dartmouth for the less
prestigious, but less expensive University of Massachusetts. While at the University of
Massachusetts, Welch majored in Engineering, achieving high grades in spite of his active social

Summary Of Song Of A Citizen
The purpose of this assignment was to reflect on the poem Song of a Citizen using critical analysis
to understand the complete meaning of what Milosz has written within the text. The poem Song of
a Citizen is an illuminating reflection on the abominable conditions of the Jewish people and the
suffering they have endured wrapped into a piece on how a prisoner is separated from the natural
world, connected by Milosz s incredible writing ability.
The poem Song of a Citizen is an open book that allows the reader a deep view into the inner
character of its speaker. Firstly, we see many of the speaker s views reflected in the poem s
numerous verses. For example, in verse 9, he says that it is better to be a live dog than a dead lion ,
which shows how he has felt and acted in this perilous situation. This could even be taken so far
as to say that, because of the horrors he faced during the war, the speaker feels that it is better to
be living than even to die a courageous death. Additionally, another revealing verse was from 20
25, which symbolized his continuing relationship with the world. He mentions a copper leaved
garden , which can be seen as a parallel to fall or winter trees, as well as a heart of metal , which
could describe the heart of manufacturing combined with nature. This shows the speaker s character
as we see how he connects nature to freedom and beauty, running a parallel to countless prisoners
and captives(including the Jews) who were separated from nature

  • 2. Tennessee V. Garner Essay Name:Tennessee v. Garner Citation:No. 83 1035, 83 1070 (1985) Facts:On October 3, 1974, Memphis Police Officers Hymon and Wright were dispatched to answer a prowler inside call. When the police arrived at the scene, a neighbor gestured to the house where she had heard glass breaking and that someone was breaking into the house. While one of the officer radioed that they were on the scene, the other officer went to the rear of the house hearing a door slam and saw someone run across the backyard. The suspect, Edward Garner stopped at a 6 feet high fence at the edge of the yard and proceeded to climb the fence as the police officer called out police, halt. The police officer figured that if Garner made it over the fence he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It dismissed the claims against the defendants as being the mayor and Officer Hymon and the Police Department as being the director for lack of evidence. Hymon s actions were then concluded to being constitutional by being under the Tennessee statute. The Court of Appeals affirmed with regard to Hymon, finding that he had acted accordingly to the Tennessee statute. The Court of Appeals then reversed and remanded. It reasoned that the killing of a fleeing suspect is seizure under the Fourth Amendment, and is therefore constitutional only if actions are reasonable. In this case the actions were found not to be reasonable. Officers cannot use deadly force unless they have probable cause that the suspect poses a serious threat to the officer or has committed a felony. Issue:Garner, the suspect s father brought forth that his unarmed son was wrongfully shot by a police officer as his son was fleeing from the burglary of an unoccupied house. He proposed a wrongful death action under the federal civil rights statute against the police officer who fired the shot, the police department and others. Decision:The Court of Appeals reversed and filed a petition for certiorari. The Supreme Courtheld that: (1) apprehension by use of deadly force is a seizure subject to the Fourth Amendment s reasonableness requirement; (2) deadly force may not be used unless it is necessary to prevent the escape and the officer has probable cause to believe that the suspect poses a ... I can remember when I was younger talking in chat rooms on the computer was so much fun and an awesome form of communication. Now we have letters, vehicles, cell phones, computers, and several other ways to communicate. In this paper the topic is an object known as the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip implant, which has greatly affected our society. While the common conception before the technological advances was that the chip was not for human use, the research that has been done on the RFID has furthered its uses. Since everyone is entitled to their own opinion, we are going to have patrons who support the RFID chip implant and those who do not which we will look into. Radio Frequency Identification chip implant is an object that can be attached to or incorporated into a product, animal, or person for the purpose of identification using radio waves (Smith 123). The implant is a typical diameter of an injectable micromodule is 2 3 mm, and its length is 1 1.5 cm. The shape is usually cylindrical to facilitate passage through a hypodermic needle (Troyk 179). • 5. Points of View Commentary Points of View Commentary Points of View , written by Lucinda Roy, is a poem that features different points of view (as the title suggests) on the subject of water: those of women collecting water in, what can be assumed to be, an African country and those of a person living in a modernised (possibly a Western ) country. Furthermore, Roy seems to be critical of the aforementioned Western lifestyle and this poem presents an underlying moral that everybody should be grateful for what they have, regardless of how basic those things are. Roy s poem is comprised of two main stanzas; the first of which details the women s daily struggle to provide water for their families. The term scoop up evokes an image of a woman scooping up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is interesting how some of the narrator s Western like education seeps through into the stanza; now, in contrast to the first stanza, there are terms such as the children jumping not through water , but from element to element (air to water) and imagery of diamond drops shooting along trajectories too long for me to measure , as opposed to the first stanza s fairly basic lexical choice. Overall, this poem displays two different points of view surrounding water those of an assumed Western woman and African woman (I feel that it is safe to assume that the narrator is a woman, since there is a lot of references to women in the first stanza thus setting the tone for the rest of the poem). As we can see, the two views are vastly different but it is as though the narrator questions her own views of water and seeks answers from the people who value water the most; something that would be a somewhat humbling experience, I m sure. Finally, I would say that this poem is very relevant to today many people living in a Western country do seem to take water for granted, and this poem seems very critical of that, as there are people who have to struggle to obtain what is considered one of life s most basic ... Leonid Frridman s Essay America Needs Its Nerds In the passage, America Needs Its Nerds, by Leonid Fridman he develops his argument by using the three pillars of literature: pathos, ethos and logos. Firstly, in lines 20 23, 28 pathos was used to develop the author s argument about children who prefers learning or creating things versus children who play sports. He used this as an example to appeal to his readers emotions because these children who preferred invention over sports are known as social outcasts and are ostracized for being intelligent or wanting to show off their talent. • 9. Beowulf Christian Or Pagan Essay Is Beowulf a Christian or Pagan Hero? Throughout the story of Beowulf, the great warrior does many things for many reasons. The question is, does he do these things as a Christian hero with god in mind, or does he do it as a Pagan hero, for fame and wealth. In the epic, Beowulf battles against three noteworthy monsters that had their fights detailed in more than a passing mention such as the many battles and wars that he fought in. These three monsters are Grendel, Grendel s mother, who was not named, and the Dragon. Beowulf, when contrasted with these Pagan monsters, appears Christian. He is not described in the text physically, but by the traits and qualities that he exhibits. One such quote says that he is bearing God s hatred, (30) and believed in his own strength, not the strength of God, whose love Grendel could not know. (10) From these two quotes alone, we can infer that Grendel is definitely not Christian, as he does not have faith in God s strength or help. From other quotes, we can further prove that he is Pagan by using examples of several Pagan qualities that Grendel shows. From the quotes So set on murder, (8) and alone, bloodthirsty, and horrible (9) we can see that he is quite bloodthirsty and murderous, both of which are more Pagan than Christian qualities. • 10. What Does Light Symbolize In Macbeth In the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, an effective technique is the use of symbolism throughout the text. This technique helped me to understand the important message of; evil over good and the lust for power. The weather, symbolism of blood and of light vs dark helped me to understand the main idea of evil. This play discusses the idea that all of us have evil inside of us, although unlike Macbethmost of us don t choose to act upon such evil, and that committing evil will always turn out bad for you. One aspect of symbolism in the play that shows evil doesn t do any good is that of the weather. He says this dialogue on the evening before he murders Duncan, he feels guilty about the evil his is about to commit. I think Shakespeare uses this technique of symbolising light vs dark to show the audience how Macbeth is feeling towards all this evil he is committing. Terrible deeds are always to be committed in the dark. This is shown by the dialogue stars, hide your fires; let not light see my black and deep desires . Macbeth doesn t want there to be stars in the sky because he doesn t want them to shine their light on his evil and murderous thoughts. Shakespeare purposely uses the darkness to show the audience what Macbeth is about to do. In the light of the day we feel safe, but in the darkness we fear it because we don t know what is there that we cannot see. • 12. Land In The Grapes Of Wrath John Steinbeck s The Grapes of Wrath is one of the most well know and important novels in American Literature. The Grapes of Wrath shows the economic hardship that the Dust Bowl brought to farmers on the Southern Plains. The Dust Bowl was caused by a drought and forced tenant farmers (farmers who occupy and farm land that is owned by someone else) to leave their land and head west in search for work. One of the most important themes of the novel is the great significance of land and its role in the lives of the tenant farmers. The farmers are hopeful for rains to come and end the drought so that they can start planting again. The end of the drought would mark the end of their distress and the insurance that they could stay on their land. Like the Joads, many families stayed on the land for as long as possible hoping for an end to their turmoil. Dave Matthews sweetly sings it best through the lyrics from his band s song, American Baby , If these walls came crumblin down/ Fell so hard, to make us lose our faith/ From what s left you d figure it out/ Still make lemonade taste like a sunny day This song, through metaphor, touches on how America has been through so much, so much that at times they are lost. But the American people have shown, they have worked, they have fought for not only a better futurebut a better meaning of what America is. Although, it has taken a little more than possessing the will to fight though. It has taken hope and still does today. It is with America s never ending hope that has inspired their nation in the pastand inspires them today to work and create a better future. They have prevailed through all the timestopping wars, all the uncalculated mistakes, and all the prolonged roadblocks. They the people have made it past and have gotten stronger because of hope. And because of hope, their country s lemonade will hopefully still taste like a sunny day . During the Revolutionary War where the colonies, that had settled in America, battled for their independence to become their own and be finally free from the heavy hand of Britain. Discuss the significance of the French Revolution and the ensuing Napoleonic State on the formation of nation states in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The French revolution was an event of epic proportions. At the outset, alike the English Civil Wars, an autocratic monarch (Louis XVI) summoned Parliament, in France Estates General, in order to demand funds and prerogatives. The outcome became very similar to the English Civil Wars; the Third Estate rebelled (in England it was Parliament though), overthrew the monarchy, the King was executed, a republic was founded and kingship outlawed in the process. The consequences would be devastating in the twentieth century. Also, the successes in the battlefield would be significant on the spreading of new ideas and forms of government; the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, the metric system, the introduction of Civil marriage, and the Napoleonic Code. Many of these principles are still in use in our day. When Napoleon assumed total control of the French state, he sought to expand French influence. Indisputably, Napoleon was a gifted commander in chief; France s military was well organised, adequately equipped and capably led. Unsurprisingly, the French established their military hegemony in Europe. Napoleon played the role of kingmaker and amended the political landscape according to his views. He terminated the Holy Roman Empire, redistributed land (for instance Bavaria greatly benefited and Poland was given independence), Ironically, when Napoleon was defeated by monarchies fighting to reinstitute the ancien regime in France, the ancien regime was not fully reinstated. Many states preferred to keep the new administrative and legal frameworks; the French legacy was maintained as it was more efficient. (Emsley et al, p. 24 25, 2011). A phrase that can have many different meanings, but yet it is only three words. The phrase So it goes, was used after every death, making them all equal. What even shocked me, is that Billy was calm when talking about death. Implying that there was nothing he could do to stop it, and it would happen to the best of us. In my opinion, the phrase So it goes, represents the idea that the Tralfamadorians had in which a person may be dead at an instance, but is still alive in the memories of others. It had also represented anti war beliefs that the author had, because of the bombing of Dresden. • 21. Social Problems According to Ferreira (2005:86), four elements may be discerned when attempting to define a social problem. The four elements are: a pressure (influential) group; a social condition; a set of values and norms; and collective action. Taking these four elements as building blocks the following definition of a social problem may be arrived at: A social condition, known to a pressure group as posing a threat to current values and norms, that requires collective action to rectify (Pretorius, Le Roux, Lesufi, Liebenberg, Martin Rautenbach Zegeye in Ferreira 2005:87). At the eve of independence, during the 60 s for a handful of African countries, urbanization, in most cases, was well sought after (social condition). Western powers had developed following paths of industrialization and urbanization and the same was thought possible in Africa (pressure groups). The basic tenants of this assumption went as follows: Capital distributed from the West to Africa was to be invested in industrial enterprises in centers that wielded political power. This newly found industry would promote manufacturing and encourage domestic savings. Jobs would be created and the capital accumulated reinvested in development projects (de Beer et al 2005: 115 125). And thus, by following this path Africa would become self sufficient (values and norms). However, five decades later Africa has failed to develop as rapidly or to the extent to which the West has. Urban poverty escalates daily. A handful of problems face the African city: insufficient provision of jobs, poorly delivered public services, a weakening revenue base, and escalating pollution levels. According to de Beer et al. (2005:116 117), it is projected that by 2030 half of Africa s population will have become urbanized, most of whom will live in poverty (social problem). There are some solutions on offer. • 22. A Report on the Pauline Epistles Over the course of the thirteen Pauline epistles, the author (presumably Paul) instructs his readers regarding not only the proper functioning of a marriage and family, but he also uses the concept and codes of familial life to describe the duties and experiences of a Christian. Thus, one cannot consider the epistles teachings on marriageand the family without considering how these descriptions of the family are integrated into the larger ideological framework produced by the letters, and as such any examination of marriage and family in the Pauline epistles must begin with an investigation into the larger role of gender, patriarchy, and familial discourse in these epistles. Doing this allows one to understand how the Pauline epistles, while ostensibly arguing for a more equitable distribution of power between the sexes than might have existed at the time of its writing nevertheless inscribes male dominance into Christianityby favoring the husband above all others, both literally and figuratively. The Pauline epistles were written to churches and early Christians who were struggling not only to nurture their new found faith, but also to outline and clearly demarcate the standards and regulations of that. As the promise of Christianity seemed to call for the abandonment of many of the social and moral codes that had governed people s lives for centuries, a distinctive need arose for clear cut answers to questions regarding the proper role of family members as well as ... When Richard Nixon started in Office he was faced with the difficult task of trying to pull all US troops out of Vietnam. He decided to use a tactic he created called Vietnamization. The simple plan was to strengthen South Vietnam so they could fight the war by themselves. The plan involved many small steps which helped finally end our involvement in January 1973. Sarah Dessen is not a self proclaimed feminist, but this book does have topics that relate strongly to feminism. It is a book about intimate partner violence, family dynamics, and a girl s journey to self discovery. It starts out as a typically books where a female meets a bad boy , but things soon take a dangerous turn. It shows how power and control in relationships can be very unhealthy, and also focuses the blame on the perpetrator, instead of the victim like many other books fall in the trap of. Caitlin s mother was not focused on Caitlin at all, instead searching continuously for Cass while ignoring the house and Caitlin. Caitlin s father expressed more interest in Caitlin s whereabouts, but mostly focused on the mother and trying to help her. The relationship between Rogerson and Caitlin started out strangely. However when she saw drug dealer Rogerson, she knew that being with him would change the course of her life, because it was completely new territory, something that her sister Cass would never of done. In the beginning, the power between the couple was very evident. Rogerson picked her up from her house, chose where to go, and what they would do. In the world of Literature her name is never hard to find within the classroom. Emily Dickinson has a very distinct style which sets her apart from other poets. Dickinson s poem Twas warm at first like us is one of her widely known poems and it reflects her signature style. The dreary and impersonal description of a cadaver catches the attention of the reader making it a favorite to many. Emily Dickinson s poem Twas warm once like us captures Dickinson s unique style and shows a truth about the coldness of death through the use of diction, tone, and imagery. Dickinson s poem begins with an unspoken but rather important question. [I]Twas warm at first like us , (Dickinson) the question one must ask himself, is: What is it ? The answer is revealed later in the poem as the words describe different cold and freezing parts of a body. Emily Dickinson chooses the word [i]t rather than he or she to show the sharp contrast between something that is human, and something that is now only a lifeless object. John Mitchel, the leader of the Young Ireland Movement, wrote the following in 1860: The British Prime Minister had violated every pledge previously made on arriving at place and power... but the pity was that the minister was permitted to act so with impunity (NJCHE 4). The twisted version of laissez faire that had corrupted the government was so normal and such a popular opinion, that they were accumsed to the prominent wrongs the leaders were invoking on the Irish people. The phrase Era of Good Feelings was used to describe the administrations of Munroe in 1816 but the validity of this phrase is questioned. Many people might believe that the period after the war of 1812 was an Era of Good Feelings because of the nation s gain of nationalism and expansion of the country, but it was not because of growing sectionalism and state issues. But the south was highly upset because they felt that this tariff only supported the north and they had to pay it also. Document F also sheds light on sectionalism because Jefferson talks about a geographic line that fills him with terror, also known as the 36,30 line created by Henry Clay. This line determined if the upcoming states from the Louisiana Territory would have slavery or not. The issue of slavery was a major player in the growth of sectionalism between the north and the south. Moreover, the government had problems with the states. Maryland wanted to tax the national bank which led to the case of McCulloch v. Maryland that was sent to the Supreme Court (Document D).Similarly are the revolts seen in Document G which resulted in throwing 50 60 leaders from South Carolina in jail but there were still prisoners stating that there are enough people to carry the work into execution. Overall, the America had too much problems on their hands to be going through an Era of Good Feelings . All in all, the period after the War of 1812 may seem to be an Era of Good Feelings because of nationalism and westward expansion, but in fact it was not because of increasing sectionalism and state issues. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As car manufacturers continue to innovate at a rapid rate, many attempts to produce practical electric cars have occurred and continue to occur. The purpose of this report is to describe the technology used to manufacture an electric vehicle and explain why it is better than an internal combustion engine. It includes reasons why the electric vehicle has grown rapidly and how it became a requirement to a better world. The research report compares the electric engine to the internal combustion engine vehicle as well as shedding some light on the future of electric cars. A Brief History of Electric Vehicles In the early 1930s, Robert Anderson invented the first electric vehicle in Scotland, in addition to the first basic electric carriage. Americans started paying attention to electric vehicles in 1895, right after A.L. Ryker built an electric tricycle and William Morrison built a six passenger wagon. The production and use of the electric car started in the 1920s due to a better road system, reduction in gasoline prices, and most importantly, the mass production of fuel engine cars. In the 60s and 70s, electric vehicles reemerged due to the environmental damage fuel engine cars had created for people (Belis, n.d.(a)). • 42. Police Brutality in Anywhere, USA Essay After our marching band s performance at a football game was cancelled because of lightning, about six or seven of the band members (including a few student leaders) sat around shooting the breeze, not fighting, not smoking, not drinking, not being loud. An unmarked police car rolled up and our conversation stopped as we turned our attention to him. In an acrid and condescending tone, the policeman pointed a finger to the exit of the parking lot and said, Out. Okay, just give us a moment to figure out what we can do, we replied. We wondered if Friendly s was still open, and asked the officer, who gave us a cold look. You can get out now, or in 20 minutes I can start writing tickets for... The officer, frantic and quite enraged at his own idiocy, pointed a menacing finger at me, Let me see your ID. Why do want to see my ID? I asked, because I was the passenger. Let me see your ID! he demanded. I asked why again, reminding him that it was a legitimate question. Getting the same non answer, I started to hand him my license. He all but ripped it from my hand. And may I have your name? I asked. He is Detective X.
  • 43. A fine representation of the Marching Knights you are! he yelled. I must have missed the meeting that decided nothing cordial will be said by, and no questions will be asked of, an officer of the law. Even though my parents pay him his salary, he is above acting like a decent human being. His last name sounded familiar. I should have known better than to ask if I knew his son. The officer s eyes widened and he yelled, You leave my family out of this! I guess that was his way of saying yes. As three more police cars showed up, Officer X instructed everyone to go home except for me and my friend. He said he knew everyone had junior licenses and would be out past curfew, when actually the only one who did was rear ended by a cop, which caused him to stay out way past curfew (nice irony). • 44. Marc Lewis Reflection Critical Thinking Assignment #3 Since I have been reading the life of Marc Lewis I find myself always becoming more and more excited about what is going to happen next. So far it has been filled with ups and down and me trying to predict what will happen next on his journey. While reading chapter 6 I was so elated that Marc had gotten accepted to college, it seems as though he actually has a plan for himself and is determined to exceed every goal. But normally good things don t always last for a time and for some reason I could sense that something was about to happen. For those of us who were not given the opportunity to have a silver spoon in their mouth or even those who had the spoon but chose not to use it acquire a different meaning in life. Growing up I lived in the projects, with drug dealers and snotty nosed kids who only aspiration when they grew up was to get out of the projects. Thankfully at a young age I was adopted by my grandparents and just like Marc Lewis a new door opened and I was finally given a chance at life itself. I truly believe that when people are presented with things that inspire them to do better or be better then they will change their attitude on everything. They begin to create dreams of being successful, studious and eventually become so set in their goals that even when things go bad they choose not to focus on them because of the complete turnaround they just achieved. Although marc seemed to be doing great I could tell that he didn t want to do the complete turnaround, I say this because he was still smoking hash, it was evident that it had become apart of his new lifestyle whether he actually wanted it to or not. He began to put a phosaude, almost like when you re high around your parents and try to act as normal as possible. He said that the trick is to balance anxiety and ecstasy and in all honesty I had no clue to what he was trying to say. The psychedelic drugs caused his thoughts to go from normal thoughts like what he wanted to eat or buy and would quickly change to his possible enemies such as customers, children and President Ronald Reagan. Psychedelic drugs cause people to hallucinate and become in and out of consciousness. I know a few people who have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Abiri University of South Alabama, Mobile, Alabama The gap in the demand and supply for healthcare services in the US and around the world are believed to facilitate the development of advance practice nursing (APN) (Kilpatrick, 2008) and this is the motivation for my pursuance of an APN (i.e. NP) degree. The factors contributing to this gap and facilitating the development of APN include physicians shortage, cost containment, etc. In the United States of America, there are four functional roles for APN clinical nurse specialist (CNS), nurse practitioner (NP), certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) and certified nurse midwife (CNMW). My chosen role is the Advanced Emergency Nursing (AEN) (which is the combination of family nurse practitioner (FNP) and acute nurse practitioner (ACNP)). As an NP, I am training to provide nursing and medical care to meet the complex needs of patients, their families and the communities they live and interact with a holistic focus in both primary and acute care settings. • 47. Presidential Election Process Of The United States Presidential Election Process The election process in the United States can be overwhelming and confusing. Firstly, how a citizen can be eligible to become a Presidential candidate? What are the requirements or the qualifications that a person needs to be a candidate? With that in mind, the candidates get to sponsor for their electoral campaigns from what type of funds and from whom? People need to know the type of character that a candidate demonstrates. America has become very demanding. There are a lot of things that consume our lives and we are not giving enough importance to the ElectionsProcess. The U.S. Census found that only 47 percent of eligible adults with family incomes of less than $20,000 a year voted in the 2012 presidential election, compared to 80 percent of those whose earnings exceeded $100,000. Overall, only 19 percent of likely voters come from families with incomes of less than $30,000 a year, even though that same group comprises 46 percent of nonvoters. Americans should get more involved in the election process for our democracy to continue because only a certain part of the population vote and get involved in the process. The United Statesis a hectic place to live; many people say they are too busy to wait in line to vote. • 48. Solving The Costs And Benefits For Each Of Our Options Eric Chien GESM 120 _35386 Paper #1/ Topic #1 To be rational is to understand and calculate the costs and benefits for each of our options and make the decision that maximizes the value and utility of of self interest. However, humans often behave irrationally due to our emotions, morality and desire for immediate pleasure. Given the above depiction, Dan Ariely argues that we will be acting irrational if we don t commit acts of thievery since the expected benefits of committing the act obviously outweighs the cost given that nobody would find out . His definition of rationality is more or less similar to what most economists believe in, which is making decisions strictly based on the highest grossing financial benefits. Therefore, under his definition of rationality and irrationality, we would be acting irrational by succumbing to our morality and conscience, and not commit the act that would bring us the most economic benefits. Under his assumption, there is no cost or risk of committing acts of thievery, then to be rational under his definition would be to steal whatever there is out there as it s practically the same thing as drinking water from a public water fountain. However, putting Plato s views in the picture, Plato would certainly argue against the claim that Ariely has proposed. This traces all the way back to the discussion about the value and necessity of justice in our lives. In Book IX of the Republic, Plato points out and argues for the value and ... • 51. Summary Of Song Of A Citizen The purpose of this assignment was to reflect on the poem Song of a Citizen using critical analysis to understand the complete meaning of what Milosz has written within the text. The poem Song of a Citizen is an illuminating reflection on the abominable conditions of the Jewish people and the suffering they have endured wrapped into a piece on how a prisoner is separated from the natural world, connected by Milosz s incredible writing ability. The poem Song of a Citizen is an open book that allows the reader a deep view into the inner character of its speaker. Firstly, we see many of the speaker s views reflected in the poem s numerous verses. For example, in verse 9, he says that it is better to be a live dog than a dead lion , which shows how he has felt and acted in this perilous situation. This could even be taken so far as to say that, because of the horrors he faced during the war, the speaker feels that it is better to be living than even to die a courageous death. Additionally, another revealing verse was from 20 25, which symbolized his continuing relationship with the world. He mentions a copper leaved garden , which can be seen as a parallel to fall or winter trees, as well as a heart of metal , which could describe the heart of manufacturing combined with nature. This shows the speaker s character as we see how he connects nature to freedom and beauty, running a parallel to countless prisoners and captives(including the Jews) who were separated from nature ...
