Tipu Sultan was the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore in southern India from 1782 until his death in 1799. He fought four wars against the British East India Company in an effort to preserve his kingdom's independence. In the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, the British led a coalition of over 50,000 troops against Tipu Sultan's forces and besieged his capital city of Seringapatam. On May 4, 1799, Tipu Sultan was killed while defending a breach in the city walls, and Seringapatam fell to the British, ending Mysore's independence.
