BRITISH RULE AND REVOLT OF 1857
INTRODUCTION
 India was very rich in various articles like
silk,cotton,handicrafts,spices,indigo,precious stones
etc.
 During 15th century the Arabs had complete control
over eastern trade.
A GREAT SAILOR
In an effort to find sea – route to India a portugal
sailor Vasco-Da-Gama reached Calicut {Kerala} in
1498 A.D.
THE EAST INDIA COMPANY
 In 1600,nearly 100 merchants of London obtained
permission from Queen Elizabeth to trade with India
and they set up The East India Company.
MORE ABOUT EAST INDIA COMPANY
 The 1st trading settlement of East India Company
was at Surat , the prosperous port town at that time.
 Later,other settlement were opened at
Chennai,Kolkata and Mumbai.
 The British and the other European groups often had
disputes with each other.
 That s why the NAWAB-OF-BENGAL SIRAJ-UD-
DAULA was unhappy with the turn of events.
MORE ABOUT NAWAB-OF-BENGAL
 Siraj did not like british. he objected to their building
forts which housed army and ammunition.
 Robert Clive the Governor of East India Company
was deputed to deal with Nawab.
 The 1st great revolt took place in 1857 which affected
a large part of India.
THE REVOLT OF 1857
 The revolt is also called FIRST WAR OF INDIAN
INDEPENDENCE.
 It was started on 10th may ,1857 at Meerut .
 This hurt the religious sentiments of the hindus and
the muslims.
MORE ABOUT THE REVOLT
 After many days the other parts of northern and
central india joined in the revolt.
 Different leaders led the struggle in their own areas.
THE GREAT LEADERS
 In Kanpur it was NANA SAHEB PESHWA.
 In Bundelkhand it was TANTIA TOPE.
 In Jhansi it was RANI LAKSHMI BAI.
 In Oudh it was BEGUM HAZRAT MAHAL.
 KANWAAR SINGH and LIAQAT ALI were other
patriotic indians who fought against the British.
 RANI LAKSHMI BAI of Jhansi was such a brave
woman that she has become a legend.
WHY ?
She met a soldier s death while fighting valiantly
against the British in the battle field.
THE RESULTS OF REVOLT
 The british parliament took over the responsibility of
governing the Indian territories.
 QUEEN VICTORIA the queen of England gave a
proclamation to India in 1858.
 Thus , the people were also promised freedom.
FACT FILE
 The immediate cause of the revolt was forcing the
soldiers to use catridges greased with the fat of pigs
and cows.the covers of these catridges had to be
bitten upon by teeth before loading them into the
rifle. This caused great resentment and hurt the
religious feelings of hindus and muslims.
