Introduction
•

I tracked my time management over a two day span to
determine how wisely I am spending my time

•

4 quadrants are used to organize results
 Quadrant 1: Important/Urgent
 Quadrant 2: Important/Not Urgent
 Quadrant 3: Not Important/Urgent
 Quadrant 4: Not Important/Not Urgent
Day One
Day One Analysis
•

I spent 4 hours in Quadrant 1
 Exam preparation and studying

•

I spent 6 hours in Quadrant 2
 Studying for upcoming but not last minute quizzes
 Recreational activities

•

I spent 2 hours in Quadrant 3

 Became distracted by conversation with friends
Day One: Strengths vs. Weaknesses
•

Strengths:

•

Weaknesses:

•

Spent a fair amount of time preparing
for important exams and timed projects

•

•

Took time to myself in order to relieve
stress and engage in physical activity

Essentially “wasted” a small amount of
time due to distractions from friends
and television

•

Overall, managed time well
Day Two
Day Two Analysis
•

I spent 6 hours in Quadrant 1
 Continued to study for exams

•

I spent 3 hours in Quadrant 2
 Grocery shopping and television

•

I spent 3 hours in Quadrant 3
 More distractions than day one (ex: conversing with friends frequently)
Day Two: Strengths vs. Weaknesses
•

Strengths:

•

Weaknesses:

•

Spent 6 hours of my day motivated and
performing tasks that required
immediate attention

•

Became distracted by television which
resulted in a failed completion of
Quadrant 2 tasks

•

Spent 3 hours performing tasks that
were not top priority but that I had been
putting off for some time beforehand

•

Spent at least 2 hours talking about
unimportant subjects and ignored
pressing matters

•

Performed less efficiently than day 1
Efficient Time Management
•

In regards to the Rules for Effective Time Management, I found that I follow
many of the rules. Over the two day span, I unintentionally followed:
 Rule 2: Making a list of daily tasks.
 I made post-it notes every morning to remind me of the important tasks I had to perform
throughout the day. I continue to make them in order to stay organized.

 Rule 10: Reserve time when others do not have access to you.
 I ensured that I would work on my most important, difficult assignments when my roommate was
in class. This allowed me to stay focused and avoid distraction.

 Rule 13: Set deadlines.
 I created a time slot for all deadline driven projects to ensure that I completed them early enough
to avoid last minute cramming and stress.
Inefficient Time Management
•

Some of the important rules listed in the Rules for Effective Time Management
did not occur to me while completing the project. Some rules I should have
followed but did not are as listed:
 Rule 7: Divide up large projects.
 As a force of habit, I frequently work on large projects all at once rather than dividing them,
although dividing them would be much simpler and more efficient in the end.

 Rule 11: Do not procrastinate.
 I have always procrastinated since grade school. However, I have never failed to get my work
done on time. Since college began, I have been working toward procrastinating less but I would
be lying if I said I do not ever procrastinate.
Conclusion
•

The two day time management project forced me to see how much time I spend
both efficiently and inefficiently.

•

It made me realize that although I spend the majority of my time in Quadrant 1
or Quadrant 2, I still spend crucial time performing unimportant tasks.

•

I did not spend any time in Quadrant 4 which is a positive result.

•

I learned that recreational activities are not an escape from priority. They are
important to allow your mind to relax and take a break from work.

•

I learned that putting off work until the day before it is due is more harmful than
helpful.
