In the novel Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck shows the consequences with his character
s acceptance of survival of the fittest by showing how those who have no value don t
make it.
Steinbeck s use of the dogs lives in the book showed the consequences of having
no value and being in a world where only the valuable succeed. In the text, while
talking about Slim s dog he says that she gave birth to more puppies, Yeah. Five. I

In the following passage, George is frustrated with Lennie and his previous actions,
I got you! You can t keep a job and you lose me ever job I get (Steinbeck 11). The
text showed how Lennie has no value to George and yet he takes him in. What is
important here is that George says Lennie is a problem because he can never do
anything for himself. This makes him a burden to himself and to others by
showing that he wouldn t benefit the lives of many. It also illustrates that Lennie
can t make it on his own if he doesn t change his ways to have some type of value to

Textbooks are getting more expensive as the years go by, publishers add extra
materials to raise prices, and new editions are published frequently, often with little
to no real content change. These problems are even worse today, as the cost of
books keeps rising to the point where some students will decline to take a class due
to the cost of the material. A 2004 study by the California Student Public Interest
Research Group (CALPIRG) along with the Oregon Student Public Interest Research
Group (OSPIRG), called Ripoff 101: How the current practices of the textbook
industry drive up the cost of college textbooks, confirmed this problem. A survey
polling the most widely assigned textbooks at 10 public universities in California and
Oregon, and interviews were done with 156 faculty members and 521 students on the
cost of textbooks and purchasing habits. (Fairchild 4). Despite the rising costs of
printing and shipping due to inflation, publishers are artificially causing the cost of
textbooks to rise to line their own pockets with profit and it will harm lower to
middle income students education. Textbook prices have been on the rise since

Skunk Hour by Robert Lowell and The Armadillo by Elizabeth Bishop are two
closely related poems. Both share the theme of an animal carrying with it natural
defenses, and the image of an isolated spectator. However, there is one important
contrast between these poems: The Armadillo portrays a creature who cannot
comprehend the events destroying the life about it, whereas the speaker in Skunk
Hour understands, possibly too well, the events affecting its life.

stanza, the hot air balloons are fading into distance and the darkness of night.
However, the spectator feels forsaken by their departure.
