Thomas Alva Edison was an American inventor born on February 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio. Some of his notable inventions include the phonograph in 1877 and the first practical incandescent electric light bulb in 1879. He was the founder of one of the first industrial research laboratories. Edison held 1,093 US patents in his name, as well as many patents in the United Kingdom, France and Germany. He died on October 18, 1931 in West Orange, New Jersey at the age of 84.
