There are many characters I have read about and watched in movies whom I do not
like. However, the one character who stands out as the one I have the most trouble
with is, Mother Gothel from the movie Tangled. Mother Gothel is the antagonist of

hair has the magical qualities of a flower which used to keep Mother Gothel

Local refugee resettlement agencies like New American Pathways assist newly
arrived refugees in restarting their live in Atlanta, Georgia. In order to provide for
newly arrived refugees New American Pathways has to rely on State funded
resources. Even though refugee
resettlement agencies like New American Pathways are non governmental
organizations. they still rely heavily on State government funding. In this Literature
review I examine the history of refugee policy, how this history produced the
relationship between the States and non governmental organizations (NGOs), and
how the State enacts its power through NGOs. Through my internship at New
American Pathways I explore the relationship dynamics between the State and non
governmental organizations as well as how State control is experienced on a local
resettlement agency in Atlanta, Georgia.
1.1 History
After the violence and destruction of the First World War a massive displacement of
people occurred, spurring on international discussions about displaced people. This
migration of displaced people caused the first refugee legislation by the United States
in 1948, The Displaced Person Act of 1948. This act helped admit displaced person
fleeing from Europe (Klein 2011). The 1951 convention on the Status of Refugees
created an international definition and legal status for refugees, holding nation states

Karen Horney is one of the preeminent figures and founders of modern
psychoanalysis. Although her ideas are not widely taught today or accepted as a basis
of psychoanalysis in and of themselves, her ideas of social and environmental
influences are integrated into modern psychoanalysis therapies and personality
development theory (Quinn). She was a contemporary of Sigmund Freudand was one
of his early followers. Yet Horney joined the class of neo Freudians after her
research and writing led her to develop and establish psychoanalytical theories that

Children who tend to move away from people in order to resolve the anxiety
/ hostility dilemma become emotionally detached in relationships and can become
very independent. The basic need for affection also affects personality
development and is often manifested in a fear of success. Those who seek love are
faced with a fear of lose of love if they seek success through the competition with
the others from whom they seek affection. Horney used the needs of the neurotic to
develop three coping strategies used by the individual based on the moving . . .

people is very compliant. The child who moves against people is aggressive, and the
child who moves away from people becomes withdrawn.
Further motivating the child s response are cultural influences, parenting patterns,
and social values. Horney s theory of personality development places the emphasis
for maturation on the interrelationship of all these factors over biological factors
such as genetics, subconscious drives, and libido. At the heart of Horney s approach
to personality development was her basic evil : parental indifference (as perceived
by the child). Whatever the precise or varied hindrances are to normal personality

admired by business practitioners and executives alike. The automaker is the envy
of others within the automobile industry, but the company is also considered to be

Two girls born into the same era of American history: despite their vast similarities,
what makes these two independent and value driven young women so different?
Since they were living in the same country, many would think that their upbringings
would be parallel. On the surface, the only differences between the two girls were
their geographic location and their skin color, but during the nineteenth century these
actually made a drastic difference in the every day lives of young women. The
juxtaposition of the lifestyles of these two young women illuminate the differences
which stem from factors such as family, work, education, and religion. These
aspects of life were results of the experiences Harriet Jacobs faced as a Southern
slave girl in contrast with Harriet Hanson Robinson s presence in the industrial
revolution as a mill girl in New England. Family is generally at the core of a person
s life, because they are the people who introduce you to the world and essentially
show you how to think. In the case of the two Harriet s, experiences with their
families differed due to day to day priorities as well as the amount of freedom each
was granted to pursue personal interests. For example, Robinson and her mother
moved to Lowell, Massachusetts after her father died, and upon their arrival they
were carried at once to [her] aunt s house ... ; and the children were led into her
kitchen, where, on the longest and whitest of tables, lay, oh, so many loaves of bread!
