A2 media studies trailer analysis Drive 2011
- 1. A2 Media Studies Trailer Analysis of: Drive 2011 Directed by Nicolas Refn Opening: It starts with extreme high angle shots of the city at night. It is followed of him in a car and then being joined by two robbers. There is a voiceover the whole time whilst he discusses that he will be the get away driver for them but will not particiapte in their crimes. The trailer starts to build when a car pursuit starts with the police after being spotted by a police helicopter. It then slows again to a conversation with a woman about his job driving from movies. When it comes to filming our trailer I think we could use the low key lighting especially when Mark goes to Han’s house and find it all trashed. I believe it adds a sense of mystery to the scene and when the audience are kept in the dark about certain things. Build up: It builds when the woman’s husband is released back from prison and he is asked to complete a job. The protagonist takes this job on for him. In order to save the family however something goes wrong and the husband dies leaving the protagonist along with a woman with a bag of stolen money. I best like the fast pace of the editing here as I think it helps build suspense. I don’t think we could use much from this build up because our film narrative is more about corruption however I think we could perhaps incorporate this speed.
- 2. Problems: The protagonist is now on a hit list when all he wanted to do was save a family from a life of crime. There are men chasing him in order to kill him and regain the money he has in his possession. There is a large sequence of violent scenes along with a calming sound track which is then interrupted by a gun shot. ‘For the rest of your life, you will be looking over your shoulder.’ He has to tackle these criminals in a bid to get a normal life but will he be able to do so? In our piece I would like the sound track to be cut off when there is the gunshot because I think this creates a shock for the audience watching. I also think that the audience should be rooting for Mark to find out the truth and be happy like we are with this protagonist.
