The document summarizes a theoretical study of the bi-leader process in lightning. It describes a self-consistent model used to simulate the inception and development of bi-leader discharges under different conditions. The model couples calculations of the positive and negative discharge parameters with the electric field distribution. Results show excellent agreement with experimental data on laboratory bi-leaders and the bi-leader phase of triggered lightning flashes. The model can also determine the threshold conditions for lightning strikes on aircraft or launchers based on their geometry and ambient electric fields.
