1. The Value Of Philosophy Essay
Writing an essay on the topic "The Value of Philosophy" can present both challenges and
opportunities for exploration. At first glance, it may seem like a straightforward task, given the
clear theme. However, delving into the intricacies of philosophy requires a thoughtful and
nuanced approach.
The difficulty lies in balancing the need to provide a comprehensive overview of the subject
while maintaining a focused and coherent argument. Philosophy, with its diverse branches and
myriad perspectives, demands careful research and a deep understanding of the underlying
concepts. As an essayist, one must navigate through the complex ideas put forth by various
philosophers, offering critical analysis and synthesis to present a well-rounded discussion.
Moreover, capturing the essence of philosophy involves more than just presenting information. It
requires a skillful application of critical thinking and the ability to articulate one's thoughts in a
clear and engaging manner. Balancing the theoretical aspects with real-world examples and
applications adds an extra layer of complexity to the writing process.
Crafting a compelling thesis statement that captures the significance of philosophy and guides
the reader through the essay is another challenge. This requires not only a thorough
understanding of the topic but also a creative and insightful approach to presenting the argument.
In conclusion, writing an essay on the value of philosophy demands more than a surface-level
understanding of the subject. It necessitates in-depth research, critical thinking, and effective
communication skills. However, despite the challenges, exploring the profound and timeless
aspects of philosophy can be a rewarding intellectual journey.

2. FC Dallas Research Paper
I went to the FC Dallas game a couple of weeks ago to enjoy the sport I love most,
but at Toyota Stadium, Major League Soccer does not feel so major league. You
may wonder why and the answer is simple: the fans. The attendance of FC Dallas
has been stuck in the bottom third since the inception of MLS and yet, FCD is
currently one of, if not, the best team in the league this season. The youth academy
system is rated number one because the last two seasons FCD led the league in
minutes played by homegrown players. You would think this would translate into
financial gain and spring them into the exosphere of the MLS, but FC Dallas does
not get the national coverage like the New York, Seattle, LA, or Orlando clubs
receive on ESPN or FOX Sports, the budget and revenue does allow for growth, they
cannot sign a major European star, and they are never in the MLS match of the week.

Ownership? Commissioner Don Garber? Actually, it is none of the above. If you
asked me the same question a decade ago, the answer would be the ownership and
their planning. Toyota Stadium is built as one of the worst stadiums in the league
because it is ugly, it has no roof, the location is not even in Dallas (should be called
FC Frisco), and it is dug in like a dog would do with his bone....under ground
(Ownership is planning to renovate Toyota Stadium....still waiting for some results).
Also, the team was God awful. The team s philosophy of football was mind
boggling boring. FC Dallas has changed their footballing philosophy and today, it is
the fan s fault that FC Dallas does not feel so major
3. The Importance Of The Beringia Theory In America
Who first arrived in the Americas? It is a question that scientists have been
debating for years using various artifacts and pieces of evidence to create theories.
Some theories include the Beringia Theory, the Coastal Migration Theory, the
Open Ocean Theory, and the Solutrean Hypothesis. The most plausible theory is the
Solutrean Hypothesis. This theory explains the travel route of the first Americans
with factual support. The Beringia Theory is the oldest theory of the four. This
theory begins during the last ice age when global cooling occurred. Global cooling
happens when water freezes into glaciers and sea levels decline, exposing some
areas of land. An area of land that was exposed includes the Bering Land Bridge,
which would have connected Siberia to modern day Alaska.. According to a video
called Ice Age Discoveries, New Evidence , the land bridge was approximately
1,000 miles wide, treeless, and grassy. Many animals were attracted to this new
land, some of which the humans were believed to have followed. On the other side
of this land bridge, however, a large glacier called the Laurentide Ice Sheet covered
Canada and the United States. At about the same time the humans finished crossing
the land bridge, the Laurentide Ice Sheet split, causing paths that led deeper into the
US. A source named Transparency from the textbook American History: Beginnings
to 1865 by Holt McDougall shows the paths the people would ve taken in the

4. Argumentative Essay On Jerry Seinfeld
Jerry Seinfeld began his commute after dinner, in no particular hurry. Around
quarter to 8 on a drizzly Tuesday, he left his Manhattan home a palatial duplex
apartment with picture windows and a broad terrace overlooking Central Park and
made for a nearby garage. Due to tell jokes at a comedy club downtown, he decided
to drive what he calls his city car : a 1998 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S. Stepping into
the garage, he tugged a thick fabric cover from the car. The interior was a pristine
matte black, and the paint job was a startlingly luminous azure. It s called Mexico

been kept secret, but just before leaving home, he d announced the gig online on a

he said. Gotham was an opportunity for Seinfeld to audition brand new material
and fine tune older bits in a relatively low stakes context. In two days, he would
perform for nearly 3,000 people at Manhattan s Beacon Theater, and that show
loomed large. It would be Seinfeld s first performance in New York City since
1998, not counting impromptu club appearances and the odd private event, and it
would kick off a citywide tour, with performances in each of the other boroughs.
Born in Brooklyn, educated in Queens and famous for a fictional Manhattan
apartment, Seinfeld called the tour a valentine, but he was, on one level, ambivalent
about it. The Hometown Hero Returns is not my narrative of being a stand up, he

6. FDR Inaugural Address
FDR Inaugural Address Speech Analysis Essay
In arguably one of the most powerful of American political addresses ever given,
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt argues that, the only thing we have to fear is
fear itself , and that in order to restore America to its pre depression state, the
American people must believe that he can lead them through the Great Depression, so
long as they appoint him the wartime executive powers required to handle the
situation effectively. Roosevelt emphasizes the need for action through the use of
biblical allusions and referring to himself as the prophet is this time of need,
taking the role of Jesus, declaring, The money changers have fled from their high
seats in the temple of our civilization. We may now restore that temple to the
ancient truths. ; he plays upon the social needs as well as builds up his credibility
with the audience by stating his plan to combat the depression, broad Executive
power to wage a war against the emergency, as great as the power that would be
given to me if we were in fact invaded by a foreign foe. ; and cements his argument
with his claims of value and policy, exposing the flaws of pre depression American
society, and eventually calling for the change he believes necessary to force America
out of the depression, we apply social values more noble than mere monetary profit. .
Franklin Delano Roosevelt goes to such lengths to earn the support of his fellow
Americans in order to unite the entire country in

Immigration s Political Policies have gone through great political changes since the
turn of the 20th century for many countries. The legal and moral issues within these
countries like Syria, Mexico, Germany, Ireland and other countries concerning
immigration have been debated and continue to be debated through the political
views within the government each and every day. Individuals within the political
realm who believe that it is morally wrong for a country to deny immigration status
argue that immigration promotes democracy, egalitarianism and libertarianism but on
the other hand, people who believe that countries have every right to deny individuals
who seek immigration argue that immigration taints the cultural roots of a country,
weakens national security and reduces the natural resources that would have been
distributed to the original citizens of that country. We as a society have seen many
political views that have contributed to these political policies changes, such as
political problems within the government, lack of jobs for the people, poverty, and
homeland issues within each country. Many of the countries that are greatly affected
by these problems continue to change over the years within the immigration laws but
the problems themselves continue to exist today. It continues

Task 2: Surveys to Residents and CNAs
After collecting the surveys I distributed, I found very vital data. I surveyed all
competent residents and all employed CNAs. The surveys asked questions based
on the quality of care provided and the stress levels from this issue. Many of the
residents commented that they would like CNAs to stop in and visit. Some of the
CNAs said they could complete all the tasks if a third CNA was on duty.
I created the survey through SurveyMonkey and handed them out personally to each
resident and CNA. The survey provided very conclusive results and made it easy to
get an understanding of what the people involved in the problem thought.
The survey issued to the residents had 25 individual responses. When residents were
asked if the quality of care was inconsistent, 28% said yes, 48% said sometimes,
and 24% said no, as shown in Figure 1. When asked if they were stress out or upset
with the inconsistent care 4 of the resident said no, 9 of the residents said
sometimes, and 12 of the residents said no. When the residents were asked from
their experience if employees were leaving this organization frequently, 80% said

And...
Baudelaire once said, Caricatures are often the most faithful mirror of life. The art of
caricature was established into print in eighteenth century England as a form of
commentary on the current events of the time. Caricature as a style itself is a
combination of two separate social inventions. CaricatureAdopting the Italian

comic effect and combining it with an updated repertoire of visual metaphor,
personification, and allegorical attributes. Though born in England, the story about to
be told in this paper is one of Spanish origin, a story about Francisco Goya. This
paper will discuss how Goya implemented painting, drawing, and printing technique
to stimulate social critique of and satirize the subjects of his works. Then how does
Goya s methodology transcend into modern caricature and social critique?
Before one can talk about his prints, one must understand who Francisco Goya is as
an artist. Goya was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker of late 18th and early
19th centuries and throughout his long career was an important commentator and
chronicler of his era. Goya produced a great number of works in a variety of media
in his lifetime. He did religious subjects in painted frescos and portraits, he then also
depicted life in Spain through aquatints, etchings, and lithographs . Gautier comments

Grandma cooks the best meals. You look forward to every single meal knowing that
it was going to be a great one. My dad s side of the familyincludes Stetson and Nick.
Not many people outside of my family have been to my grandparents cabin, so I ll

the beds is a full size bed where Stetson sleeps, and Nick and I sleep in 2 twin size

11. Analysis Of The Movie The Seller
Although CBS and Hank may have breached their fiduciary duty to Oliver as real
estate agent, there is no evidence or written agreement explaining to prove who may
be speaking the truth. Oliver, the seller, had the option to not follow through the
contract if he had felt uncomfortable and shaky about the deal. Oliver was aware of
the Ziffels financial risks and acknowledged the fact that their first loan application
was denied and that their offer was lower than asking price. On the other hand, Oliver
complains for Hank s deceptive statement for untruthfully explaining the Ziffels
financial position, and for calling the Washington Heights apartment complex when
instructed to not do so. In brief, there is no written statement justifying their claims
and discussion, while Oliver was attentive of the Ziffels loan status and continued
working with Hank.
Hank and CBS may argue that they had fulfilled the seller s best interest by finding
a ready, willing, and able buyer. According to Professor Murray, fiduciary duty is
between the listing broker and the seller, while keeping the seller s interest as the
primary goal. The agreement between the seller and the broker was signed under an
exclusive right to sell contract, which guarantees the broker s commission payment
if a ready, willing, and able buyer was found. In other words, the exclusive right to
sell agreement protects the broker s commission regardless of who finds the buyer,
unless the fiduciary duty has been
12. Comparative Analysis of Ariel by Sylvia Plath and The...
Plath in Ariel and Larkin in The Whitsun Weddings both explore ideas about love
and relationships. The Whitsun Weddings explores the theme of love and
relationships by capturing the journey that takes place prior to marriage; the poem
was written about Larkin s observation of marriage parties on whit Sunday (now
known as May Day) which was a public holiday and was traditionally the day on
which people would get married. The Whitsun Weddings takes on a somewhat
cynical tone which is emblematic of Larkin s negative views regarding marriageand
long term relationships. The Applicant by Plath presents the reader with a critique of
marriage by depicting the selection process that men and women alike have to go
through when it comes to marriage.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This quote demonstrates the superficial nature of marriage and its lack of true
meaning. The use of anatomical imagery gives the poem an eerie aspect and leads
the reader to wonder whether marriage is really about love or in fact about meeting a
set criteria and conforming to society s view on acceptable relationships which
during the sixties was somewhat narrow, although it was post sexual revolution
there was still a lot more work to be done in terms of eradicating stigma. The use of
the first person plural our in the first line suggests to the reader that the persona is
not one entity but perhaps, the voice and the collective conscience of society. In the
Whitsun Weddings Larkin documents his observations whilst aboard a train on
Whit Sunday (a day on which it was common for people to get married). Larkin
conveys his ideas about relationships from the poem s inception; That Whitsun I
was late getting away . The use of the first person pronoun I suggests that Larkin
was planning a get away by himself and is happy in his own company, which may be
viewed as somewhat strange considering that bank holidays are often times to go
away with family or significant others; this ties into his lack of interest in marriage
and traditional family structures

fisheries. That will not only give us a more positive image with our new Canadian
market, but we will be able to advertise that we use fresh locally sourced
14. The Ill Treatment Of Native Indians
In A Short History of Indians in Canada, Thomas King explores, for the most part,
the ill treatment of Native Indians in Canada. Two satires by the names of Coyote
and the Enemy Aliens and Tidings of Comfort and Joy, focus on the arrogance of the
White men and how their actions affected the society of Native Indians. Specifically,
this essay discusses how their actions contributed to the dehumanization of Native
Indians. This concept of Dehumanization is explored through the hypocrisy on what
is legal and illegal according to the White men, the Native Indians enslaved and
treated like wild animals and reduced to being mere possessions of their White
masters .

Through this quote it is clear that this paper is a legal document that entitles the
Coyote to all the properties of the Japanese Canadians. Is the job more important
than being fair? I says (p 56). King once again emphasizes that even though this
document is legal and written in the book of law, it isn t morally correct as it strips
the Japanese Canadians of their basic human rights. The narrator then goes on to
question whether or not the White men are doing the right thing regardless of
what the law states. In Tidings of Comfort and Joy, Hudson who represents the
White man has an obsession of gathering Indians as collectibles, a form of
enslavement which is legally allowed however once again is not morally correct.
The text states, And while most everyone had since moved to newer enthusiasms
such as exotic pets, rain forest acreages and internet stocks, Hudson stayed the
course and had, over the years, put together one of the more impressive collections
of Indians east of Saskatoon (p 6 7). This quote ridiculously defends Hudson s
obsession of collecting Indians who are humans as being morally correct, compared
to other not so strange obsessions making it seem like a rational thing to do. Through
this quote, King emphasizes that the sole purpose of objectification of Native Indians
in this short story is to be collectible items that can be stored and used as possessions.
It had been fun playing with the Indians, placing them around
15. Inflation And Its Effect On The Economy
Introduction
Inflation is another aspect of macroeconomic instability and is a rise in the general
level of prices in an economy. When inflation occurs, each dollar of income will
buy fewer goods and services than before and reduces the purchasing power of
money. **Inflation does not mean that all prices are rising and during periods of
rapid inflation, some prices may be relatively constant while others may fall. Almost
all prices are set by supply and demand, and if the economy experiences inflation, the
overall levels of prices rise. Measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), two types
are demand pull and cost push, and affects the nominal and real interest rates,
unanticipated and anticipated inflation, nominal and real interest rates, and
hyperinflation.
**According to Investopedia, Finally, inflation is a sign that an economy is
growing. In some situations, little inflation can be just as bad as high inflation. The
lack of inflation may be an indication that the economy is weakening. As you can
see, it s not so easy to label inflation as either good or bad it depends on the overall
economy as well as your personal situation. (Investopedia).

I am planning to become a network and computer systems administrator. One of
the reasons that I selected this career path is that I stand working in this field and
feel that I have strong skills and background information. I started in the
Information Technology field in 2008 as a System Support Specialist for a
University in Pakistan. I have always liked Computers and networking and how it
works and, when I caught the opportunity to apply for a job in this field I applied
for it. My Diploma in Information Technology from Pakistan facilitated myself to
understand the basics of computers and Networking. I expanded my technical and
troubleshooting skills and obtained a job as a Help desk specialist in the United States
and I want to become a Network Administrator in the future.
The purpose of my interview is to study the impact of a Network administrator in
the IT industry, and to do this I set up an interview with one of my colleague
Michael Pham, Network and Systems administrator. He is 32 years of age and 5

Jane Eyre, a novel by Charlotte BrontГ«, contains several notable themes and
messages sent to its readers. Jane Eyre is a coming of age novel that is a story of a
girl s quest for equality and happiness. A common theme that recurs throughout the
novel is the importance of independence.Charlotte BrontГ« utilizes several techniques
to convey this message, incorporating her personal experiences, as well as including

because of Jane s desire for independence and freedom, such as love, religion, and
gender inequality.
Jane Eyre is a story of a quest to be loved. Jane searches, not just for romantic love,
but also for a sense of being valued and belonging. However, this search is
constantly hindered by her need for independence. She starts of as an unloved
orphan who is desperate to find love and a purpose. For example, Jane says to
Helen, to gain some real affection from you, or Miss Temple, or any other whom I
truly love, I would willingly submit to have the bone of my arm broken, or to let a
bull toss me, or to stand behind a kicking horse, and let it dash its hoof at my chest
. However, over the course of the novel, Jane learns to gain love without harming
herself in the process. Although she is despised by her aunt, Mrs. Reed, she finds

21. Operation and Performance of Reciprocating Engine
Operation and Performance of Reciprocating Engine As an accident investigator,
understanding the operation and performance of the reciprocating engine is
essential. Reciprocating engine can be branched into two groups, the 2 stroke and 4
stroke operating cycles. The 2 stroke reciprocating engine completes a power cycle
in only one crankshaft revolution and two strokes, compression and power stroke.
This is achieved when power and compression stroke happens simultaneously while
the piston is near the bottom of its travel. The 4 stroke reciprocating engine operates
on the 4 stroke 5 event cycle, which are the intake, compression, power, exhaust
stroke and ignition event. During the intake stroke, the piston descends from top
dead center (TDC) with the exhaust valve closed and the intake valve open to the
bottom dead center (BDC) of the cylinder. As the piston descends, a mixture of air
and fuel from the carburetor is drawn into the cylinder. After the intake valve closed,
the piston moves back toward TDC of the cylinder compressing the fuel air mixture.
Just before the piston is close to TDC, ignition takes place by a spark plug in
gasoline engines which produces an electric spark in the fuel air mixture. The piston
move back down toward BDC resulted by the pressure from the combustion of the
compressed fuel air mixture. This causes the crankshaft to rotate, thus turning the
propeller. During the exhaust stroke, it expels the used fuel air mixture through the
exhaust valve
22. The Attitude Of The Poem My Last Duchess By Robert
Browning
9th Grade English Essay: Discuss the attitude of the poet towards the duchess in My
Last Duchess by Robert Browning
In the middle ages , the main topic used in poems was a nobleman, usually a knight
in love with a married woman and had to prove his devotion by heroic deeds and
amorous writings . They used blazon to emphasis the beautiful bodies of the women
in those days. However, there was a radical change in the Victorian times where
prostitution became such a big issue. The poems became darker and less courtly. In
the poem, My last duchess by Robert Browning there was no traditional blazon such
as complementing the duchess body. Yet, the speaker who is also the Duke talks
about the women s body as the main justification for her assassination. The duke
talks about her smile as the reason for his jealousy and possessive obecession.

23. The Human Condition In Art
The human condition is defined as:
the characteristics, key events, and situations which compose the essentials of human
existence, such as birth, growth, emotionality, aspirations, conflict, and mortality. The
diversity of the human condition can be thought of as the very broad topic which has
been and continues to be pondered and analyzed from many perspectives, including
those of religion, philosophy, history, art, literature, anthropology, psychology, and
biology, (Human Condition).
For the first piece of artwork that I am going to discuss that exemplify the aspect of
human condition would be Noli Me Tangere by Titian. In this piece of art, the artists
depicts Mary Magdalene kneeling before the newly risen Jesus. This is an example of
human condition because in the artwork, Mary is emotional. Mary has just seen
someone who dies three days earlier and is now risen and back.
The artists uses the human condition in many ways besides just emotionally. The
artists uses the form of conflict in the painting. In the human condition, conflict is
one of the characteristics and the artists focuses on that because you can see Mary
kneeling and tugging at the robe of Jesus while he has a face of concern because he
knows what he is to do and that he is to keep going to not only speak to Mary but to
the other disciples.
Another human condition example in the art work is mortality. Jesus was crucified
three days before his resurrection and is now risen. There are not many cases
24. Gender Roles In The Renaissance
The Renaissance brought many artistic and social advancements, however, the role of
women in society continued to be objects for male consumption. Extremely defined
gender roles confined women to the domestic sphere, where they had very little
economic, legal, or political rights. The behavior of women was also an important
indication of the social status and reputation of their families. Femalesexuality,
particularly among upper society, was highly regulated to ensure chastity before
marriage and the legitimacy of heirs during a marriage. In the upper classes of
society, the patriarchal social system evolved as the primary way to regulate womans
behavior and maintain male social control.
During the Renaissance, portraiture became very ... Show more content on

The only nudity displayed by Mary is when she breastfeeds Christ, where one bare
breast emerges demurely from her collarbone as in da Vinci s depiction of Mary
below. Even when partially nude, Mary is depicted as an example of good
femininity, passive and totally non sexual.
Mary and Eve were used by artists and the church to police female sexuality.
sexualizing Eve in the depictions of the original sin to disparage female sexuality,
and depicting Mary as non sexual to show that maternal and virginal femininity were
the correct behaviour for women.
An excellent example of the Madonna/whore complex in Renaissance art is Carlo
da Camerino s altarpiece, The Madonna of Humility with the Temptation of Eve. In
the altarpiece, the Mary sits with Christ and is depicted as humble and virtuous, an
idealized woman to demonstrate the role of women in the Church. Below Mary lies
Eve, largely nude, sexualized, and intertwined with a serpent. Fur is wrapped around
her hips, a symbol of lust. She displays the characteristics of dangerous femininity
that was disparaged by the church.
As an altarpiece, this piece is designed to send a message about the right behavior of
women. It would be created to police the behavior of women, convicting them to turn
away from the actions of Eve and towards those of

Over the years, OPEC has been able to achieve this objective by being focustive on
the production of oil. They reduce and increase the production as and when required.
For instance, several million barrels of oil was removed from market during the Gulf
Crisis in 1990. (www.opec.org).
The three major websites that affect the price of crude oil in the present global
market are, New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX, http://www.nymex.com), the
International Petroleum Exchange in London (IPE,http://www.ipe.uk.com) and the
Singapore International Monetary Exchange (SIMEX,http://www.simex.com.sg).
Other websites that also serve information about the price of oil are the web sites of
the Paris based International Energy Agency (IEA, http://www.iea.org) and the US
Energy Information Administration (EIA, http://www.eia.doe.gov).
Influence of OPEC in Oil Production and Oil Prices:
In order to coordinate the oil production policies the ministers of the organization
meet twice in a year. They discuss about the methods to balance the supply and
demand in the future. It is not necessary that the member countries alter the
production during the delegation of the meeting. There are 1,199,707 million barrels
of crude oil barrels by the end of 2011, representing nearly 81 percent of the total
reserves. (www.opec.org).

Lewis Carroll s classic children s novel, Alice s Adventures in Wonderland is
fundamentally about the growth of the character of Alice. In the Victorian period
1837 1901, there was a changes in children education and reflexively development
of children literature. Therefore when writing Lewis Carroll attempts to put forth
a form of education within the text. The story follows Alice who is a seven year
old well mannered victorian girl that stumbles through a rabbit hole into the
magical world of Wonderland. Alice takes on the role of the audience viewing
Wonderland and its strange inhabitants. It is through language in both

herself in a hall which only has a small door in which she can not enter. Frustrated
Alice looks upon a table on the hall, a bottle suddenly appears which tag reads,

marked poison it will almost certainly disagree with you sooner or later and she

27. Major Themes Of Mexico And Peru
1. Major Themes Throughout the video we looked at the fact that the presence of
blacks in Mexico and Peru seem to be near nonexistent even though there was a large
number of African slaves taken to these two countries. It was even said that the
number of African slaves taken into Mexico and Peru outnumber the slaves that were
in the United States. One aspect of this phenomenon was that in Mexico, the African
culture was mixed with the whites and Spanish culture early on, resulting in the
dilution of African presence in Mexico. After the abolition of slaveryin 1830 the
Catholic Church even allowed interracial marriage between the blacks, whites, and
Spanish. In one part of the video we were shown a wall that the commentator even
called The Sixteen Shades of Blacks because of the different colors of all the people
in the painting to emphasize the intermingling of races. So in current day Mexico
there is very few 100 percent African residents, most are mulatto, moreno, or mestizo,
which are all mixed race. Also the Mexican government decided that in the
seventeenth century that racial categories should be eliminated, while this seemed
to be a step in the right direction for equality, it ended up covering up the rich
African history in Mexico and now a vast majority of citizens of Mexico do not
understand the history they do have. The narrator also found that people in Mexico
seem to hide their blackness. Some people, like Professor Cruz in the video, don t

28. Preserving And Developing A National Identity
Preserving and developing a national identity in China has been and continues to be
an ongoing commitment, most notably since the seventeenth century. A nation is an
imagined community consisting of a so called myth of common descent, where those
who contribute to society share a common experience. The concept of a national
identity is crucial in understanding the history of Chinaas it developed into a nation.
Factors that have been established to define identity can consist of the following: the
relation one has to a specific territory; the government system; religions; ideologies
and beliefs; and importantly, in China, the relationship between government and class
social structures. Moreover, the notion of ethnic identity surfaces... Show more

With the conquest of the Manchus over the Ming Empire during the transition from
the Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, the loss of ones native identity was on the
line. The preservation of national identity was critical for both the Han and the
Manchus. Manchus feared in losing their national identity in which they ensured to
preserve their shamanism: the notion of having a spiritual death and rebirth, thus
going into a supernatural world where they could then influence events (Schoppa,
36). With the Manchus fighting for the recognition and preservation of their national
identity, they would perform their shamanic rituals in the city, such as in the
Forbidden City, along with enforcing tactics that would prevent the Manchus and the
Chinese mainlanders to associate with one another closely. However, at a point, as
Schoppa elaborated, the Manchus conformed and [bought themselves] into Chinese
culture (Schoppa, 26). By doing so, the political and social contributers of the empire
felt as if their identity was on the line.
Moreover, during the reign of the Qian long Emperor, when China peaked with its
wealth and power, when it was in its prime of commercialization and urbanization,
was when it led to more social development, and an increase in population. This
urbanization and social development due to increasing population was a large
contributor to the dissolving national identity of China (Schoppa, 35). During this
period, in the

Many managers are unaware of the legal liability that e mail plays in our
courtrooms. Some ways that companies can avoid litigations in court are; writing
with accuracy and precision, know your topic, be consistent, and avoid negative
comments. Recently, General Motors was hit with a $4.9 billion verdict. That
verdict was based largely upon an internal memo. One researcher reports in Every
Word Counts from Patricia S Eyres concludes, the fact is that during a trial, the
courts will review and analyze everything from informal memos to performance
appraisals to marketing plans, all of which may be turned against the company
(80). Another high cost for businesses today is illiteracy. Per this quotation, the
U.S. Department of Labor estimates that illiteracy accounts for about $225 billion
each year in lost productivity (Donovan E mail 15). Most companies today don t
track that cost, however their overall profit will reflect it. Several published articles
referenced companies that were hit with heavy penalties relating back to their
employees writing skill levels. This cost is needless and unbearable for many
companies to carry. Companies are also faced with excessive employee turnover or
loss of manpower. Writing skills should be part of the interview process for most
companies. Thereby avoiding numerous turnovers and retraining cost. Several
companies are faced with the termination of colleagues due to their writing

A stethoscope, box of bandages, syringe, and thermometer all made of plastic and
enclosed in a small case with a red cross imprinted on the front. These items had
been some of my favorite childhood toys and represent how long I have wanted to
become a doctor. Apart from a brief carpentry phase when I was 7, I honestly cannot
recall a time when my mind was not focused on a future career in medicine. Part of
this early interest was undoubtedly spurred by my family s history in the field. I
have multiple family members who have been nurses or physicians; however, the
largest influence was my Father whom I have looked up to as a role model and
example of the kind of doctorthat I want to be. I loved that my Dad was a doctor. I
realized the importance of his career, but mostly I loved always having someone
there to help me through all of my minor and major childhood traumas. When I
was young and received a gruesome 4th of July sparkler wound, my Dad was able
to calm me down and make me feel safe. Although I may have squirmed and cried, I
knew my Father could help me because I knew that he was a Doctor and what that
meant. I knew the amount of training he had received, the years of school and
residency, and most importantly that I could trust him to take care of me. That level
of trust is something that I aspire to gain in the future.
As I grew older I became more interested in medicine but for different reasons. The

Studies show digital screens harmfully affecting our eyes over a long period of time
(Keim). In the course of human s life now, the majority of the world experiences
digital screens which slowly hinders our vision. Digital light leads to several other
problems besides vision such as different types of cancer, depression, and typically
majority of americans experience an abnormal sleep cycle (Keim). Majority of
americans experience at least one of these health problems through their lives as
ninety five percent of the American population gazes at a screen during the night (
Keim).
Towards our future, humans excessively depend on technology even more.
Generations to come will depend on technology as it advances. By the age of five, 10
percent of children possess a phone given to them by guardians (Zollinger).
Technology seems to control the younger generations more and children are slowly
decreasing the amount of physical activities they participate in. Twenty nine percent
of teenagers take part in physical activities outside for at least one hour (Zollinger).
The internet appears to take most attention from children, which is a problem parents
did not face while growing up as the adults participated in outdoor activities at a
young age so preventing the overuse of a smartphone or the computer throughout the
young generation s life certainly seems unknown,
32. Rise Of The Anti Hero
Rise of the Anti Hero Through Cable and Subscription TV From Tony Soprano to
Walter White to Don Draper the anti hero seems to have replaced the classic hero
on TV as a result of 3 following major influences. Over the past few decades, due to
events of the world such as wars, attacks, natural disaster instilled a mistrust in
establishments such as government and journalism, which is then reflected in the
popular culture with the stories told on TV. The second major influence is the
shift in FCC regulations for cable and subscription content that has had a major
effect on the types stories that can be told in these two mediums. And third
influence is the networks breaking free from advertising pressure; subscription TV
has changed the landscape of TV, clearing the path for stories that are not
influenced by rating and advertising, and valuing the story itself. The first and
foremost factor that enabled creators to write and audiences to consume stories
about anti heroes goes hand in hand with society s severe mistrust in
establishments. TV has had a major role in how events unfolded in late 20th and
early 21st century, making it possible to bring the news into our living rooms. The
rise of the anti hero is a product of a series of chain events that started with many
atrocities that our society had to endure, followed by society s realization of how
flawed our government and news reporting was, eventually leaving the the people of
this country (and of the world) with a darker

As a present, my husband announced that I was to research the newest compact
cameras so that I could update my pocket sized camera. Previously I had a Kodak
compact camera however the features were lacking and it was starting to eat
batteries, it was time for a new camera. It was shocking to find that compact cameras
have come a long way since the last time I purchase a compact camerajust five years
ago. There were many cameras to choose from and most were under $200.00. Here
are my top eight picks for compact cameras for under $200.00. They are listed in no
order of quality or price. 1. Sony Cybershot W120: If you are looking for a colorful
camera to express yourself, this is the camera for you. It comes in the original
silver, or one can choose the same camera in black, pink, blue, or red. Choosing a
color is nice but I found that some colors were $50.00 or more, just to have a color
on the outside case. Similar to the Olympus FE 300, it contains a 15 MB internal
memory; 4x Optical Zoom; 2.5 1 LCD Display; Lithium Ion battery; and utilizes a
Memory StickDuo for memory. The only downside of the camera is that it contains
only 7.2 Megapixels, much under the Olympus camera. I have talked to a friend
that owns this camera which states that the camera is good for tons of lighting like
outdoors but does not work well indoors with lower, florescent lighting. It can be
purchased at just about any store for under $200.00, especially at Wal Mart. 2. Canon

38. Discrimination In To Kill A Mockingbird
Discrimination: How it affected life in Maycomb
Discrimination and stereotypes are still involved in today s ever growing society.
People are judged by their race, gender, and, wealth; people are expected to act a
certain way because of these things. In To Kill A Mockingbird it tells the readers
about a small town, Maycomb, that faces many challenges because of how
individuals are judged and treated. If someone were African American he/she
would thought to be less of a person and were treated as if they were trash. If
someone were to be a woman they were thought to be weak, emotional, and
dramatic. If someone were poor he/she were thought to be dirty, rude and were
treated like trash. In To Kill A Mockingbird
, Harper Lee uses stereotypes related to
racism, gender, and wealth to teach her audience about how individuals were treated
during the Great Depression. Racism is a big contributor to the disorder and
dysfunction that occurs in the small town Maycomb. For example, when
Calpurnia, the Finch s cook, brings Jem and Scout to her church that mainly
consists of African Americans, someone at the door says, I wants to know why
you bringin white chillun to nigger church (Lee 135). People were expected to go
to church with someone of the same race during this time; if this did not happen,
then they were treated differently. Boo Radley, a neighbor to the Finch s, stabbed
his father, Mr. Radley, in the leg with scissors in the beginning of the story, and
The Sheriff hadn t the heart to put him in jail alongside Negroes, so Boo was
locked in the courthouse basement (Lee 12). Whites and Blacks did not even want
to be in the same vicinity as the other color. When Tom Robinson was brought to
trial, Dill became really upset when Mr. GIlmer called him boy all the time and
sneered at him, an looked around at the jury every time he answered (Lee 226).
Mr. Gilmer did not show Tom Robinson any respect when he should have because
people in their society had no respect for blacks. Since racism causes a big trial
towards the end of the story, it causes the loss of life of an innocent man. People in
Maycomb also judged and treated others differently because of their gender. Jem says
to Scout that It s time you

In the time of the Northern Renaissance, there were many people called humanists, or
people who studied the classical culture of Greece and Rome to increase their
understanding of their own times. One important humanist in the Renaissance time
period was Johann Gutenberg. Gutenberg s contribution to the time of the Renaissance
was the invention of the Gutenberg printing press. The invention of the Gutenberg
printing press has helped the development of culture and society, the development of
vernacular, or everyday language of ordinary people, and a development of learning.
The invention of Gutenberg s printing press helped develop Italys culture and society.
It allowed books and articles to be created in a short about of time. Because the
books were less expensive, more people owned books and obtained information
from them. One example of a common book was the Christian Bible. The spread of
the Christian Bible allowed many readers to immerse themselves in the culture or

41. Puritans Influence On Religion
Many civilizations, settlements and colonies were influenced by an outside force
usually being a group of settlers who spread their ways of living with natives. One
group in particular were the Puritans who became angry with the English church,
leading them to travel to create a new society. The Puritans came to the Americas
from 1630 through the 1660s with specific ways of living and religionbeing the center
of life. They influenced the New England colonies with their many values and ideas
politically, economically and socially.
The Puritans lives revolved around religion and the church which heavily affected
the colonies social aspects. As can be seen in a town map, the church is the center
of everything. All the families lived surrounding the church, which shows the level
of importance the church is (doc 2). Not only did it show importance but it also
brought people to be closer together and almost equal in status. The Puritans lived
in a very close knit society. John Winthrop, one of the chief founders of the puritans,
expresses Wee must delight in eache other; make other s conditions our owne;
rejoice together, mourne together, labour and suffer together, always haueving
before our eyes our commissions and community in the worke, as members of the

Information on celebrities is not only very popular with the general public, it also
popular with journalists. Interviewing a movie star requires almost no effort. The
celebrity s publicist will provide you with every significant and insignificant detail of
the celebrity s life. All you have to do is read this information, interview the subject,
cut and paste what the celebrity says so the interview has a coherent structure, and
`bang, there is your thousand or two thousand word article.
Because of this modern media frenzy there are as many divisions of Hollywood
celebrity as there are bird species in the Amazon. As the dim witted, obtuse and
lethargic stars of Big Brother proved last summer you don t need any skills to
become a celebrity these days, you just need to be in the media. In Hollywood there
are A listcommercial celebrities like Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts.
There are your B list celebrities like Ben Affleck, Kevin Kline and Uma Thurman
(they might not have to audition for parts, but nor can they expect a fee any higher
than a couple of million dollars.) There are struggling in the grave celebrities like
Mickey Rourke, reluctant celebrities like Kate Winslet, Lazarus celebrities like John
Travolta, Art house celebrities like Judy Davis, institutional celebrities like James
Cann, BOB celebrities (Bottom of the Barrel) like

India
Hyderabad COP11 and Post COP11
The main point of discussion in the Eleventh Conference of Parties held in
Hyderabad, India was the implementation of the Aichi Targets as well updating the
national strategies and action plans, also to discuss the financial mechanisms required
to implement these targets.
The opening statement given by Ms. Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister of Environment and
Forests of GoI and the President of the COP11 was, Biodiversity, the variety of life
on earth, was vital to social and economic development and fundamental to humanity
s survival. The goods and services provided by biodiversity yielded both global and
local benefits, especially in countries like India where biodiversity was directly linked
with providing livelihoods and improving the socio economic conditions of millions
of people, thereby contributing to sustainable development and poverty alleviation.
The continuing loss of biodiversity, largely as a result of human activities, should
therefore be a matter of concern to all. Pursuing business as usual would be a grave
error and would testify to an ignorance or arrogance that humans might not even live
to regret. The third edition of the Global Biodiversity Outlook indicated that, if
current trends in biodiversity loss continued, they would result in a catastrophic
reduction in essential ecosystem services. It also predicted that action taken over the
coming two decades would determine whether the environmental conditions on which

Topic: There is no hope of doing perfect research (Griffith, 1998, p97). Do you
agree? A discussion with detailed reference to at least two examples of my research
done in schools that I have been studying. Research as the name suggests, means
that re searching. It denotes the process of searching for something whose search
has already been completed in the past. That something might either be an idea, a
concept, a theorem or a technology and much more. There is no hope of doing
perfect research says Griffiths. In fact, the saying holds good for each and every
research work done ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are evidences of happenings in the past that has proven many research
results to be wrong. Had a research work been incomplete and perfect, there would
not have been a necessity to rework on the same. In fact, a research always uses an
existing conclusion as a base. It is implied and evident from the above research
findings that there cannot be any research that could be termed Perfect , in this world.
It is my opinion about research. It is obvious that my opinion stands for the quote by
Griffiths. However, opinions and perceptions differ from person to person. Certain
things could be understood better by experimenting rather than seeking an
explanation. If you are not satisfied with what Griffiths has concluded, then
experience and experiment it yourselves, today!

45. The Pricing Objective Of The Marketing Strategy
The pricing objective of the marketing strategy is profit centered, meaning the new
services are expected to maximize the company profits. In evaluating the target
audience, gym participants are not found to be price sensitive, generally. Rather, they
are value conscious and tend to place a high emphasis on quality in evaluating the
membership cost. People have various motives in joining a gym including socializing,
recreation, taking shape, losing weight, or health requirements. Because of the
intangible nature of the gym experience and health related matters, people do tend to
be more value conscious than pricesensitive.
Understanding how the customers evaluate the price aids in choosing an appropriate
pricing basis strategically. For the new services, ABC Fitness will take a markup
pricing approach with a predetermined rate of 40%, set by the executives. 24 hour
access. The costs associated with this service include a video surveillance system,
access cards, club fixtures, and promotional programs. Using secondary data (Snap
Fitness, 2014), a rough estimate has been developed and presented in Table 1.
Assuming a 40% markup, the total cost of adding this service comes to a total of
$43,400. The new service is expected to increase the memberships by 25%
annually. Over a window of 5 years, under this assumption, the current membership
size will grow from 200 to 488; an expected 288 sign ups for this add on service
which is equivalent to an average of 58 new
47. The Seizure Of Nasser s Nationalization Of The Suez Canal
Nasser intended to use the revenue from the waterway to fund the Aswan Dam
project, but it would have taken Egypt 367 years to pay for the Dam from tolls
alone. The Canal only brought in a profit of $52 million and not the $100 million
profit that Nasser was claiming.
To the United States, the nationalization of the Canal was a convenient excuse for
what was to come. To Britain and France, who felt that they owned the historical
rights to the Suez Canal Company, the seizure of the canal meant that they would
lose their largest colonial vestige in the region. Because there were no legal route for
Britain and France to oppose Nasser s nationalization, the Egyptian President could
continue to manage the canal. British Prime Minister Anthony Eden was prepared to
react decisively with military action ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He made passive threats that nuclear weapons would be used if the countries did not
withdraw from Egypt. Although United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower felt
that the Soviet Union was using the crisis as an opportunity to infiltrate the region,
Eisenhower did not support military intervention in the Middle East. Eisenhower
feared that the conflict would catalyze into a direct confrontation between the
United States and the Soviet Union. During a policy meeting, Eisenhower stated, If
the Soviets attack the French and British directly, we would be in war, and we
would be justified in taking military action. A Third World War seemed imminent,
but Eisenhower was determined to deter further conflict. At the time of the crisis,
Britain was experiencing severe oil shortages and a near collapse of their banking
system as a result of their military involvement. A furious Eisenhower pressured his
Western ally to yield to Nasser by refusing to deliver oil or to offer any financial
support until all British forces were removed from the Suez

Abnormality and Seymour Glass Abnormal behavior and those who exhibit it, often
point the way to what is wrong with being normal. Such is true in J.D. Salinger s
short story, A Perfect Day for Bananafish, in which character Seymour Glass displays
abnormal behaviors, attitudes, and qualities until the moment he dies. The
abnormalities that Seymour encompasses serve to underscore the failings of our so
called normal society.
Upon returning to New York from psychiatric wards of Army hospitals, Seymour
spends the next days with his wife s family, where it becomes apparent that his
psychiatric treatment was unsuccessful. His rudeness to Muriel s grandmother, calling

somewhat disturbing conversation between the adult Seymour and young Sybil,
they decide to go into the water. Seymour takes his robe off and leads Sybil into

49. Rational Choice Theory Of Criminal Behavior Essay
People chose all behavior and including all criminal behavior. Which in this case the
choices that criminals make brings them pleasure and adrenaline. Criminal choices
can be controlled by fear of punishment, but not all the time. The crime will be limited
when the benefits are reduced and the costs increase. Rational choice theory is a
perspective that holds criminality in the result of conscious choice. Not to mention,
that it is predicted that individuals choose to commit crimewhen the benefits
outweigh the costs of disobeying the law. In the rational choice theory, individuals
are seen as motivated offenders by their needs, wants and goals that express their
preferences. This theory has been applied to a wide of range in crime, such as
robbery, drug use, vandalism, and white collar crime. Furthermore, rational choice
theory had a revival in sociologyin the early 1960s, under the heading of exchange
theory, and by the end of the decade was having a renewed influence in criminology,
first as control theory and later as routine activities theory.
Rational choice theory addresses, criminal behavior in various ways. In addition,
this theory also falls short in many places. I have decided to work on the rational
theory because it is a common theory that I see on a day to day base. I feel that
anyone who breaks the law should be held responsible and not be rewarded with such
a low punishment. If our criminal justice system enforces stricter punishments than
those who are
50. The Justice System Of Licking County Essay
Actions speak louder than words and when I hear the word justice I think you do the
crime, you do the time. I personally have filed five, if not more, reports in the last
thirteen months with the Licking County Justice System. Crimes including; criminal
damaging (on more than one occasion), burglary, domestic violence, and several
violations of a protection order. One would think that justice should have been served
by now. However, the process continues, leaving me to feel nothing more than the
justice system in Licking County is inefficient due to, new employees, lack of
urgency, and poor communication skills.
Beginning September 2015, my seventeen year old daughter arrived at my job to
get lunch money. I could tell she had been crying so I went outside to talk to her.
As I leaned against my car, that I allowed her to drive, I noticed a huge dent in the
passenger s side door. Reluctant to tell me, I already knew, her and the boyfriend had
been fighting. I drove to the police station to make my first official report thirty that
evening. Pictures were taken and the initial incident summary states victims vehicle
was kicked by an unknown suspect. The vehicle s front door was caved in and had
an obvious shoe print. Victim believes suspect 1 is the cause of the damage, but can
not prove at this time. Therefore, no charges were filed. We all have watched CSI at

51. Analysis Of Dazai s The Setting Sun
Furthermore, as Chiemi Kan and a team of researchers discovered in a
psychological study published by the International Society of Behavioral Medicine,
social class or socioeconomic status (SES), indexed by constructs such as education
and income level, is an important predictor of health, ( Psychological Resources as
Mediators of the Association Between Social Class and Health: Comparative
Findings from Japan and the USA , 53). Dazai s story also mirrors this relationship,
as the mental state of the characters is heavily affected by their class, which can be
analyzed with the Psychoanalytic literary lens.
Kazuko:
The Setting Sun opens on the rather normal scene of Kazuko eating breakfast with
her mother in their country home, and the two have a conversation centered
around Naoji and their fears of his demise (Dazai, 9). Kazuko, in an attempt to
comfort her mother, quips that only good people die early, and because he is such
a scoundrel, Naoji is not dead. The focus is placed on Kazuko by her mother,
however, who jokes that she will therefore die an early death, but Kazuko responds
seriously with, Why should I? I m bad and ugly both (Dazai, 10). She is explicitly
unsatisfied with her personal behavior and appearance, indicating a severely low self
esteem linked to her failure to behave like her mother, the perfect aristocratic woman.
This core psychological issue appears again when, after accidentally burning down
their shed, Kazuko feels immense and crushing guilt,
52. Nfl Head Collisions
Football is a sport beloved by Americans. Millions of boys from a young age enjoy
playing football from recreational to dreaming of the NFL. Whether these boys end
up play for their school team or the NFL, all levels of players experience head
collisions. Recently, many people have questioned the severity of these head injuries,
or concussions, induced by playing footballand their lasting effects.
A team of researchers and engineers at the University of Michigan undertook a four
year challenge sponsored by the NFL to create a helmet with better protection from
brain injuries from sports. Current helmets worn by football players, including the
pros, reduce the force put on the skull during a collision. However, the current
helmets do
53. Grades And The Esteem, By Randy Moore
Grades and Self Esteem
What is self esteem? Self esteem is confidence in one s own worth or abilities. In
Grades Self Esteem , author Randy Moore (2007) stated that the level of performance
of the students decreased while schools are building the self esteem in the students.
Author Alfie Kohn (1994) stated in his article The Truth about Self Esteem to
contradict Moore s opinion that academics and self esteem are not related. Moore
discussed some beneficial points which are useful for the students, but in some cases
his argument was not giving better meaning. I agree from Moore s article that the
American students do not perform as well academically as students from other
countries. I do not agree from Moore s opinion that the ... Show more content on

Giving tough exams and more reading, and setting high standards to award grades
will not allow the teachers to understand the intellectual depth of the students and
increase the value of the classes. Some people argue that students will perform better
if it is difficult to get grades. There were evidence that harder multiple choice exams
will not allow the students to improve understanding and thinking ability. The harder
exams will yield only short term benefit to the student, but in the long run, tougher
grades won t benefit the students. Teachers who are giving easy grades to the
students are worried about the students self esteem and the elevation. Kohn (2002)
stated that many higher education teachers are basically researchers, they are not
trained enough to teach, it is better to analyze the teachers skill and examine their
view of teaching in order to get better performance of the students. This will allow the
students to get benefit without facing a hard grading system.
Moore (2007) stated that nowadays teachers are offering only A or B grades to the
students. According to Moore (2007) in 1966, teachers gave C s as A s and by 1978,
compared to C s, A s were increased. In the 1980 s, most of the schools were giving
A grades to the students. Many researchers stated that there is no proper evidence for
grade inflation. For example Kohn (2002)
54. Effective Assessment For Exceptional Ebd Students
Effective assessment for exceptional EBD students
A best practice for assessment is a process of addressing the emotional and
behavioral concerns of a student. In short, the student would be referred to a
Response to Intervention Team (RTI) to determine what school based supports and or
interventions could be put into place to help the student. If the interventions are not
successful, then the student can be referred for EC evaluations to determine if they
are in need of special education services. The referral for the special education
process should occur within 90 days. If a student is determined to be eligible for
special education services, then an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is developed.
An IEP is individualized; therefore, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Response to intervention
Response to Intervention (RTI) according to Kauffman and Landrum (2013) is a
multi tiered approach for the early identification and support of students with learning
and behavior needs. The RTI process begins with high quality instruction and
collective screening of all students in the general education classroom. Struggling
learners are provided with interventions at growing levels of concentration to speed
up their rate of learning. These services may be provided by a variety of personnel:
(e.g.: including general education teachers, special educators, and specialists). The
progress is carefully monitored to evaluate both the learning ratio and level of
performance of each individual student. Educational decisions around the
concentration and time of interventions are based on the individual students response
to instruction. RTI was designed for use when making decisions in both general
education and special education classrooms, creating a well integrated scheme of
instruction and intervention guided by student outcome data.
For RTI implementation to work well, the following vital components must be
executed with fidelity and in a rigorous manner:
пЃ®High quality, systematically based classroom instruction: (e.g.: all students
receive high quality, research based instruction in the general education classroom).
пЃ®Ongoing student assessment: (e.g. :)
55. Australia Cultural Identity
Sport events like the Olympic games provide the opportunity for host countries to
show their identity to the rest of the world. This showing of identity is at the same
time a construction of selfidentity.
It is a construction in a sense that the host country has to convey its most important
ideas about itself to the world. In this limited period of time the host country has to
draw upon experiences, historical events, and values which represent the country and
the nation.1 In other words, it is a narration of the nation visible to the rest of the
world. The ceremony tells a story that is supposed to represent a unified nation. At
the same time, it is, as Jackie Hogan points out, an act
of inclusion and exclusion .2 Thus, the ceremony itself ... Show more content on

The ceremony pictures stereotypes of immigrants with associated dresses and
dances.10 Moreover, the presence of Aboriginal Australians is limited to the sequence
Awakening .
It almost seems that they are not seen as a part of modern Australia. According to
Hogan, ideas of
backward, exotic, and pre modern come to mind when compared to the developed and
working white Australian.11 Thus, dividing Australia and its history into white male
dominated, premodern
Aboriginal past, and a period of immigration rather emphasises boundaries than unity.
The ceremony seems to show contrast rather than togetherness. The attempt to create
a united nation consisting of many different people result in the marginalisation of
minorities and celebration of
the dominant culture .12
In sum, the opening ceremony of the Olympic games in Sydney attempts the portrayal
of a multicultural Australia, in harmony with its past, and welcoming of all cultures.
However, the main focus on the history of white Australians and the constant
presence of this white Australianness throughout the ceremony reflect existing power
relations and result in marginalisation of
56. Utilitarianism And Decision Making
Jeremy Bentham said in his Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation ,
that the rarest of all human qualities is consistency believing that people were
rational actors who understood that the appropriate action was to cause the greatest
happiness of the greatest number (Bentham, 1789). However, human beings are often
far from consistent in their adherence to utilitarianism, falling often to the emotional,
deontological response. When faced with the choice of pushing one person to their
death to save the lives of five people, would you be able to make that decision? This
scenario makes up the ubiquitous footbridge dilemma, formulated specifically to
bring an individual s automatic, emotional responses and rational, conscious... Show

Major findings have shown that the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFc) plays
an integral role in processes and executive functions like cognitive control (Greene,
Nystrom, Engell, Darley, Cohen, 2004), abstract reasoning, and goal directed
action: skills that are pointedly necessary for effective utilitarian judgement (Tassy
et al., 2012). Alternately, the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFc) is correlated
with emotional, affective functions, utilized in deontological decision making and
it has been observed that activation in the DLPFc results in a reduction in activity
in the VMPFc, and vice versa (Koenigs Grafman, 2009). Greene et al. (2004)
presented participants with a variant of the footbridge dilemma known as the crying
baby dilemma, where to save a group of five people from being discovered by
hostile assailants, the actor must choose to suffocate a crying baby. This scenario is
classified as a personal dilemma because it requires active harm to an individual and
incurs a strong negative social emotional response. Functional magnetic resonance
imaging (fMRI) conducted while participants considered the scenario showed that
there was a significant increase in activity in the DLPFc in participants who chose the
utilitarian option (Greene et al.,
