Police Officer Essay
Crafting an essay on the subject of a police officer requires a delicate balance between
addressing the complexities of the role and presenting a nuanced perspective on law
enforcement. The task is challenging as it necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the
multifaceted nature of policing, encompassing aspects such as community relations, ethical
considerations, and the evolving challenges faced by law enforcement agencies.
One difficulty arises in navigating the polarized opinions surrounding police officers, with
debates often centering on issues like use of force, accountability, and systemic concerns.
Striking a fair and unbiased tone becomes crucial to provide a well-rounded view,
acknowledging both the admirable aspects of the profession and the areas where improvement is
needed.
Moreover, delving into the historical context of law enforcement and its evolution over time
adds another layer of intricacy. An effective essay would require a deep dive into the origins of
policing, its societal functions, and how it has adapted to changing circumstances. Balancing
historical perspectives with current realities adds a level of complexity to the task.
The task is further compounded by the need for extensive research to ensure accuracy and
credibility. To offer a nuanced and informed discussion, the writer must engage with a variety of
sources, ranging from academic articles and case studies to firsthand accounts and expert
opinions. This demands time and effort to sift through diverse viewpoints and synthesize them
into a coherent narrative.
Lastly, maintaining a sense of empathy and understanding throughout the essay is challenging
but crucial. A thoughtful exploration of the human side of being a police officer, acknowledging
the challenges they face and the impact on their mental and emotional well-being, adds depth to
the essay. Balancing this empathy with a critical analysis of systemic issues is no small feat.
In conclusion, writing an essay on the topic of police officers requires a delicate dance between
presenting a nuanced perspective, navigating polarized opinions, delving into historical contexts,
conducting extensive research, and maintaining empathy throughout. It is a task that demands
careful consideration and a commitment to fostering a balanced and informed dialogue on this
complex subject.

Jamaics s Economic Downfall
Initial Conditions
Jamaica approached the International Monetary Fund in 1979 as a result of its
chronic balance of payment issues. This problem was triggered chiefly by the oil
crises of the mid seventies and the bauxite industry s declining revenues. As a result,
producers cut production in response to a Government imposed ban on bauxite as a
form of retaliation.
The government then began borrowing at a rapid pace from the Central Bank and
overseas institutions in an attempt to facilitate and maintain previous levels of
spending. By 1977, only US$30 million was available from the US$120 million in
1975 and Government had run out of reserves after trying unsuccessfully to ration its
supply.
A series of controls that were imposed and aimed at stemming the outflow of
reserves, simply resulted in a large parallel foreign exchange market and the
government was eventually forced to devalue the currency.
With the arrival of the 1980 s, Jamaica saw accelerating inflation, falling output, a
severe foreign exchange crisis, and political and social tensions.
Within the five month period between the end of 1987 and May of 1988, there was
a 95% devaluation of the Jamaican dollar. In addition, the external debt increased
steadily throughout the 1980s reaching US$4.5 billion in 1989, or equivalent to
125% of GDP.
By the nineties, the situation continued to be unfavorable for Jamaica with balance of
payments problems still existing, depressed growth due to the falling export

Formalistic Analysis of Hills Like White Elephants
In an analysis of the story Hills like white elephants by Ernest Hemmingway, one is
forced to take a deep look at the hidden meanings embedded in the story.
Considering the point of view, the significance of the location and its relevance to
the story, the structure of the text, the symbolic meaning of the two landscapes and
the title of the story, the entrails of the story are exposed. Hemmingway s story is
written in an objective or dramatic point of view. The story is told primarily through
dialogue. The narrator has emotionally distanced himself from the characters, and
the true feelings and opinions of the characters are revealed in little clues as the
story progresses. The narrator acts solely as a reporter of the chain of events... Show

She says, Everything tastes of licorice. (Sweet)...all the things you ve waited so
long for, like absinthe (bitter), the combination is bittersweet. A deeper reading
leads to a new understanding of the symbolic meaning of the two landscape
descriptions. They were in stark contrast to each other. One side was barren and
arid, the other green and fertile. The valley of the Ebro was long and white... there
was no shade and no trees... On the other side, were fields of grain and trees. These
opposing landscapes symbolize the contrasting options available to the couple. The
dry side of the valley represented the choice to abort the unborn child and continue
with an empty life filled shallow experiences, (looking) at things and (trying) new
drinks. The fertile side of the valley represents the life the woman desires, one filled
with family and meaningful moments. The story then shifts to the station which was
between two lines of rails this represented the two opposite directions in which they
could have traveled, and the choice that lay in each direction, Madrid being the
place of abortion, and the continuity of the empty life they were used to together, or
toward Barcelona, a new start, a new beginning, with a new life. So railroad station
represented a crossroads or junction at which they had to cross. The title of the story
was simile. The title hills like white elephants also represented the choice that the
couple had to make. A
Essay On Elbow Dislocation
After the diagnosis from the orthopedic doctor of a posterior elbow dislocation, the
athlete was instructed to wear a mobilization brace locked out at thirty degrees until
his next follow up appointment. During this time, gentle range of motion activities
began involving the wrist and the elbow in both flexionand extension. The athlete also
worked on grip strength with putty, increasing the time and intensity as needed. In
addition to these activities, isometric elbow contractions added to the intensity of the
rehabilitation. After the rehabilitation sessions finished, the athlete iced the injured
area.
The athlete began to heat the injured area before beginning his exercise to help
promote increasing range of motion. Both active and passive stretching of the elbow
and wrist assists the athlete in increasing range of motion as well. The athletic

However, the athlete still wore the brace while walking outside due to the ice on the
ground for protection in case he fell. The use of the upper body ergometer was added
to help increase range of motion and strength of the arm. The team physician cleared
the athlete to begin closed chain activities. Wall pushups were then added to the
athlete s rehabilitation program.
Next, the athletic training staff added elbow curls and extension to the athlete s
rehabilitation program. Also, the athlete began upper body proprioceptive
neuromuscular facilitation exercises in both the D1 and D2 patterns to work on
entire arm strength in flexion and extension.
Once the athlete mastered the wall pushups, the intensity increased to table pushups
and then to chair pushups. The athlete began to feel confidence in himself in
activities of daily living and did not feel as if he would drop something if he held

Capstone Of Reflection
Reflecting on the Journey
Throughout my two semesters in CommSkills 1015 and 1016, I have learned a lot,
and developed academically. The countless essays and speeches have helped me to
become a better writer, and speaker. Prior to my time in CommSkills, I would write
without a goal. I would sit down and words would go down on paper, but they never
truly accomplished the goals that I had while writing. Through attention to MAP,
attention to detail and practice I have come a long way. The Integrative Learning

It is also important that you are able to see these strengths and weaknesses in aspects
of your life outside of writing papers and speeches. Once I realized why I struggled
with procrastination, I was able to take advantage of it. I knew that I would always
prefer to be doing something active so I used this knowledge to get a lot of hours
in volunteering with the Special Olympics. Instead of procrastinating by going for
a run or to the gym, I went to special olympics events on tuesdays and thursdays. I
was not required to do more than ten hours of service work for class, but once I
started I truly could not stop. I loved and still love, taking the time to support
people with disabilities, but it did not only help them. I always leave Special

your happiness and the daily struggles we all face. If my friends at Special Olympics

The Palace Of Versailles As A Hunting Lodge
1.The Palace of Versailles was designed and constructed by many architects and
designers, who include Jacques Lemercier, François d Orbay, Charles Le Brun,
Louis Le Vau, AndrГЁ Le NГ
ґtre, Jules Hardouin Mansart, Robert de Cotte. Each of
these men worked on separate parts of the massive palace. Some of these architects
had this as their life s work, as many died during its creation (like Mardouin Mansart
or Louis Le Vau) and let their apprentices or co workers finish what they started.
2.Louis XIII originally commissioned the work as a hunting lodge. However, with
each new monarch, new additions were made until Louis XIV declared Versailles as
his residence and the seat of government in France.

After the French loss in the Franco Prussian War and the abolishment of the
monarchy under Napoleon III, the Germans used Versailles to announce the
unification of the German Empire under Otto von Bismarck and Kaiser Wilhelm I.
Following this moment, Versailles would never represent the French King or nobility,
but rather as a magnificent value to Baroque art and architecture. However, this does
not diminish its historical and societal value and significance. The Palace of Versailles
was used in the signing of the 1919 Armistice, ending World War I. In the late
twentieth century, Versailles was opened to the public for tours. I have personally
been to Versailles and it is as magnificent as it sounds.

i.Value: Based on the fact of the price to create this palace and the values it
contains, Versailles clearly is a very valuable and important part of French, if not
Western European, history. It represents the nobility and clergy that ruled France
for centuries. It also represents power and peace, as this Palace was used
historically to display both of these aspects. ii. Shape: The Versailles that is widely
recognized today was conceived in the early eighteenth century, following the death
of Louis XIV. A U shape was adopted by the architects and more rooms were
planned. The shape of the palace represents its grant size. From the right angle, the
palace can fill your entire field of vision. The

The Extraordinary Potential of Man Revealed in Atlas Shrugged
Freewill is the tenet on which men founded the United States of America, and the
glory of America the Beautiful stems from the unlocked potential of its people. The

The Philosophical Evolution Of Metaphysics Essay

and How It Pertains to Today Society.
Imagine, the year is 2150 and a student is sitting at her desk looking within at latest
technology, she thinks about lost poets that history books have shunned for the
significance of more famous poets. As a child in modern society, the importance of
lesser known poets, such as Thomas Traherne and George Herbert, are considered
valuable for their philosophical influence in poetry. Over the course of time literature
has become a melting pot of ideas borrowed from other poets and literary works,
which are coagulated into one another to make a new idea. People in modern society
need to understand the importance of remembrance in the similarities in the
backgrounds, metaphysical influences, and written works of Thomas Traherne and
George Herbert.
It is astonishing how both poets have similar upbringings with almost a 100 year
gap between them. The background of Thomas Traherne presented by Richard
Firth has stated that Thomas Traherne was born within the wall of Hereford City
in 1637 (page 1). At the age of five, the British Civil War marched into his town
where they beheaded King Charles I. Later that year, Treharne left to attend the
Hereford Cathedral School. After graduation, he then attended Brasenose College in
Oxford, earning his BA (Bachelor of the Arts) in 1656. During the years of 1657
1660, he wrote his first complete work titled, Select

sustainable growth rate is the rate at which a firm can grow while keeping its
profitability and financial policies unchanged. The model allows an analyst to
isolate drivers that have led to changes in historical growth in order to isolate causes

One area is financial leverage. Issuing debt allows Costco to increase its return on
equity as long as the return on invested capital is greater than the cost of debt. If
Costco s core business earns 12% return on invested capital but it can borrow the
debt at a lower rate, financial leverage would increase the ROE. Financial leverage
is expressed as the ratio: #8721; Assets to Equity = Assets / Owners Equity Costco
s assets to equity ratio has fallen slightly from 2.21 to 2.06. This means that for
every dollar of invested capital Costco acquires $2.06 worth of assets in 2001
verses $2.21 worth of assets in 1997. This may indicate that less assets are being
acquired. If less assets are acquired, less sales may be generated and if less sales are
generated there is less net income yielding less return for shareholders and a less
attractive investment opportunity. Wal Mart Corp has had very inconsistent asset to
equity ratio form year to year which makes it difficult to draw any conclusion
regarding investment. Such inconsistency could be an indication of Sears asset to
equity ratio had been consistent decreasing from 6.60 to 5.45 until 2001 when it
increased to 7.24. This is the highest ratio of any Costco competitor. Although this
ratio is high, the instability of the number over the periods measured may discourage
investment. BJ s Wholesale has demonstrated

Ancient Egypt was a civilization of ancient Northeastern Africa, concentrated along
the lower reaches of the Nile River in what is now the modern country of Egypt. It
is one of six civilizations to arise independently. Egyptian civilization followed
prehistoric Egypt and coalesced around 3150 BC with the political unification of
Upper and Lower Egypt under the first pharaoh
Narmer. The history of ancient Egypt occurred in a series of stable kingdoms,
separated by periods of relative instability known as Intermediate Periods: the Old
Kingdom of the Early Bronze Age, theMiddle Kingdom of theMiddle Bronze Age
and the New Kingdom of the Late Bronze Age.

The majority of Egyptians were peasants who farmed small plots of land, they were
tied to their land, and were required to provide services to the ruling class, such as
working on the construction of temples and public works.
Archaeological research shows that the average Egyptian peasant lived fairly
well, with an adequate diet consisting mainly of bread and beer, with some
vegetables such as onions, garlic, and fruits. The average Egyptian would only eat
meat on holidays, while the wealthier would eat meat more frequently. The home
of an Egyptian peasant was invariably built of mud bricks, and was well designed
to stay cool inside despite the hot days. The stoves did not have chimneys and
instead the smoke veneted directly through an opening in the roof. The inside of the
house was simply decorated but did not lack comfort: the floors were usually
covered with reed mats. The ancient Egyptians gave great importance to hygiene
and appearance. They bathed frequently in the Nile and used soap pastes based on
animal fat and chalk. The men shaved their heads and their entire bodies and used
perfumes and aromatic ointments to cover bad odors. It was normal for men, as well
as wealthier women.

Blood Wedding By Federico Garcia Lorca
In 1930s Spain, the ritual of marriage became highly controversial as the 1931
Constitution allowed for divorce to be legal. This caused debate between older and
younger generations. The elders of society still had their beliefs deeply rooted in
the views of the Catholic Church , which did not allow for divorce. Nonetheless, the
younger generation was more prone to giving into desire and therefore was more
open to the idea. The play Blood Weddingby Federico Garcia Lorca insinuates the
strong importance of ritual in the 1930s. Due to this, in the play, ritual is revered
and ironclad while desire is shunned. When Leonardo comes to the wedding of Bride
the clash between desire and ritual is made evident. Nonetheless, ritual is made...

However, when Leonardo whisks Bride away, ritual is threatened. Lorca also
shows how desire should be kept hidden away in society by the running away of
Bride and Leonardo being made off stage. He shows that people would rather
pretend that desire does not even exist making their running away hidden
signifying that. Additionally, the setting of Act 3 adds to the feeling of desire.
Forests have been known in plays to be a place of surrealism. Leonardo and Bride
get married in the forest as their ability to be together is like a dream come true for
them and it would not be possible anywhere else. In any other place, ritual would
have had more precedence and strength because society endorses it due to the beliefs
of the Catholic Church. All in all, desire is not imperative to society in the play and
in that time period.
Blood Wedding portrays ritual excessively; even the title Wedding is a religious
sacrament. Thus, it should come as no surprise that Lorca encompasses ritual into
the hunting down of Leonardo and Bride. As soon as everyone learns that the two
are gone, Mother dispatches people to go look for them and says, It s come again:
the hour of blood (p. 44). From this phrase, one can see that the hour of blood has
come before. It is an accepted ritual to hunt down and kill a runaway bride or
anyone who challenges ritual. No one is disturbed by the impending murder because
it is a tradition a way of living. Desire has

Muir were two naturalist lovers whom worked hard to keep their views of the our

Gifford Pinchot believes humans should respect the natural environment and keep it
conserved, but also to benefit from it. He wanted people to use the natural
environment to the best of our need. With this in mind he also believed that
conservation did not only serve for conserving nature for future generations, but also

Survivor is a reality show that tests a group of people s abilities to survive on an

When Galang won their first challenge, Gervase cheers loudly and shouts at Tadhana.
As Tadhana saw Gervase as a threat in being overzealous, they vote out Marissa in an
attempt to suppress him and to protect their own self esteem. This shows that
Tadhana is displaying outgroup derogation. Outgroup derogation occurs when an
outgroup is perceived as being threatening to the members of an ingroup. (Brewer,
1999) This phenomenon often accompanies ingroup favoritism, as one needs to have
a liking towards their ingroup. When an ingroup is threatened by an outgroup,
identity and self worth are also threatened. According to Fein Spencer (1997), when
people derogate an outgroup, they tend to feel superior as a result, and this feeling
helps affirm their self worth. In this case, Tadhana voted out Marissa to further
strengthen their valued ingroup identity and their own self esteem to make

Of course the college of my dreams is Stanford University, because it could make
me a millionaire! I want to attend Stanford for many reasons not just because it
will help me make a lot of money, but that s always a plus. It would be really great
for me to go to school at Stanford. Stanford is a great college for academics and it ,
also has many great sports teams and clubs. Stanford is located in Stanford
California I would be pretty far away from home but, it would be worth it for the
kind of schooling Stanford has to offer. There are 16,122 students enrolled right
now, and almost all these kids that made it through Stanford are very successful later
in life. I know stanford is really expensive but, there are ways to make it affordable,

What Is The Symbolism Of Caskets
#1 Symbolism of caskets Set by her father, Portia s suitors must choose the correct
casket to have her lovely hand in marriage. There are three options for them to
choose from: gold, silver, and lead. All three chests are inscribed with short phrases
on the outside that hint to their contents. These chests are symbolic of several human
natures and beliefs that become clear when the contents of the chest are revealed.
The first chest is sparkling gold and brilliantly decorated. Inscribed on the outside
is, who chooseth me shall gain what many men desire. When chosen and opened,
all that s inside is a skull holding a taunting message of failure. The message inside
reads all that glitters is not gold. The gold casket represents greed, showing that
those who chose the gold because of their own desire are shallow and selfish. They
didn t consider what was inside, only their own wishes, and this caused those
suitors to lose the lottery. This is symbolic of the idea that a desirable outside
doesn t mean the inside is as great. The beautiful outside is deceitful, and only
accounting for one s desires can mean a greater loss and disappointment. The gold
casket holds quite a bit of trickery, for the inscribed phrase seems like the right
choice if the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Who chooseth me shall get as much as he deserves, is inscribed on the outside of
the second chest. Inside is a picture of a fool and a small note, ... with one fool s head

foolish, therefore as he leaves he must take the picture of the fool with him. A fool
gets what a fool deserves. The silver chest, like the gold, is symbolic of greed. The
silver chest is for those who are afraid to choose the gold; they are not as greedy,
but still are still lacking in kindness and humble actions. They are foolish, they
believe they deserve Portia s hand in marriage; but they must walk away a lonely
Investigation Of A Security Clearance For A Position...
I.INTRODUCTION
Background investigations are an essential aspect of the vetting process for both
employees and potential employees of the US Federal, State, and Local governments
and private sector companies that provide support, services and products to these
government entities. These investigations are conducted to determine the suitability
of the subject of the investigation to hold a security clearance for a position impacting
our national security. Many of the individuals hired by the aforementioned
organizations are placed in positions which require a security clearance. Based on the
type of clearance, the person has access to information that is crucial to
implementation of the missions of US government entities and private ... Show more

II. INSIDER THREATS
The purpose of US Federal Government background investigations is to determine if
individuals are deemed acceptable for employment within the US government, and
more importantly, prevent individuals of malafied intent from gaining access to a
position impacting the US national security. Properly executed background
investigations can greatly diminish the possibility of a potential insider threat
obtaining access to classified information, which can cause the US great harm and the
US government great embarrassment.
Prior to the founding of the United States of America, the insider threat has hindered
the security of a nation. It is written that the outward destruction of a country results
from the inward turmoil of its government. Numerous historical accounts of internal
conflicts endangering the welfare of countries are present in the history books of
most countries. In most instances, the conflict occurred within the governmental
structure of the nation. Regarding internal threats, the US government is not immune
from this imminent danger. Constantly, there are numerous threat to US government
operations that are undetected. Although the US government Most recently, the
breach of security of former National Security Agency (NSA) employee, Edward

Wage Workers In The 1800s
In society, many make a living by working for others to get the necessities they
need. Workers face many struggles such as wage cuts, horrendous work conditions,
an increase in hours, due to these conditions they are labeled wage slaves. These
individuals have no choice but to work in these conditions. The growth of industry
in the United States made corruption easier and made employers richer while the
poor stayed poor. The employers justify their actions by arguing that the employees
have a choice to go and work for someone else. However, workers do not have the
choice to work for others since most employers were using the same method to make
a profit. Workers are treated unfairly, but they use many effective techniques such as

Workers became more numerous, better organized, more disciplined, and more
successful even though employers tried to stop them (Who Built America 113).
Many of these workers led strikes for better hours, better wages and better
conditions. When comparing the 1800s to today, we see that strikes were very
effective, an example of this is shown in the 8 hour movement. Unions helped win
more than 60 percent of the strikes waged in 1889 and 1890 (Who Built America
113). Due to these workers, employees now face fewer obstacles. Whenever
workers felt as though they were being taken advantage of they could refuse to
work, if they withdraw their cooperation, every social institution can be brought to
a halt (Brecher 5). Without workers, the employers will have no one to complete
products therefore not being able to make a profit. Subsequently, employees will
have leverage over the employers so they can finally sit down and negotiate their
conditions. This was shown in the Michigan Central Railroad where workers
fought for their wages to increase by two dollars. The workers exhibited their
resistance when streetcars, wagons, and buggies were stopped; tanneries,
stoneworks, clothing factories, lumberyards, brickyards, furniture factories, and a
large distillery was closed in response to roving crowds (Brecher 31). The result of
this strike was victorious, and 2 dollars a day became the standard wage in Galveston
(Brecher 31). This strike was important because it exhibited to others that if they unite
then they can achieve better conditions. If the workers did not unionize they would
not have achieved equality in the workforce and better wages and conditions. Without
resistance, these workers would have never gotten negotiations or the necessities they
need. Even if workers lost because of outside interference they eventually had the
power to change the minds of

This is a visual Rhetorical analysis of the X men portrayal of a stereotype conveyed
via film. It is a fiction movie that implies a near future where humanity begins to see
a new race appear. The new race are mutants who are equipped with strange and
varied powers; these mutants are grouped into two categories: those who advocate the
integration and understanding with humanity, led by Dr. Charles Xavier and in the
other category those seeking confrontation with the human race as inferior and hates
them, directed by Magnus, best known as Magneto, a dangerous mutant with
extraordinary powers. However, I will be focusing on Rogue, a teenager mutant

An example of this is gay people who are being rejected just because they have a

In X men, mutants and non mutants are fighting between those who are trying to
help the human race and those who want to destroy them. Eventually, they started to
do many things to be acceptable to society like changing their appearances and their
opinions so they can live peacefully between non mutants. X men also show different
races that are at war between each other. Teenage mutants can be dangerous because
they do not know of their mutant powers, and they can be developed at any point of
their life time.
This movie, although it has a time frame that lasts two or three hours, it can be

The Age Of Innocence Analysis
The Age of Innocence is a story with the happiest of endings. Newland Archer s
struggle between passion and practicality, between Countess Ellen Olenska and May
Welland, comes to an epic conclusion, confronting the effects of duty, marriage,
promises, priorities, society, and lust.
Newland and May are engaged when Newland first meets Ellen, May s cousin, who
stirs up their New York society with her dramatic clothing and loose lifestyle. May is
considerably plain when compared to her cousin, and as time passes, Newland starts
to realize that himself. The intellectual conversations exchanged between him and the
countess pale in comparison to the polite exchanges he receives with May. The more
time Newland spends with Ellen, however, the more he realizes that he is in love
with her. He quickly goes to his fiancГ©e after this discovery, who was vacationing
in Florida with her parents at the time, and urges that the wedding be moved up,
for he knows that if he waits too long, he surely will bend to the will of Ellen and
not go through with his engagement. He recognizes that it is his duty to society to
be with May and he does all that he can to make sure that happens, even if he has to
sacrifice what his heart truly desires, to be with Ellen.
The wedding gets moved up, they get married, and Ellen leaves New York.
Newland and May go on to have kids and live the married life they originally
planned to. When May dies of pneumonia several years later, their now grown and
The Conflict Between Christian Faith And Those Of
Islamic...
As a global collective, the human past is purely one of conflict. Power struggles are
widespread and unique in context, but these struggles are not special in the presence
or complexity of the self versus other conflict within them. One of the strongest
examples for this assertion is the First Crusades. At face value, any observer can
immediately take notice of the separation between those of Christian faith and those
of Islamic faith. If additional diligence in research is provided, any one of these
observers begins to find the endlessly deeper self versus other struggles present on
both sides, specifically amongst the Christian military. Numerous accounts from
Christian actors serve to support this argument; the recorded thoughts of both soldiers
and intellectuals detail the surprising amount of divisions between what should be
the Christian united. The relationship between the self and the other present in the
mindset of the actors of the Crusades shows that a definite, dynamic, yet necessary
division between all groups of people exists, no matter the already established bonds
of any collective. One of the most complicated pieces to the self versus other puzzle
is the dynamic nature of its idealistic segregation. Each person involved with the First
Crusadehad an undeniable loyalty to God. In an effort seemingly meant to cultivate
more glory, some saw it fitting to sacrifice established intercommunity bonds for the
sake of peer provided glory. The glory promised by Pope
Importance Of Supernatural Aid In The Odyssey
In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus goes on a journey to get home after twenty
years the trojan war. The Hero s Journey by Joseph Campbell represents the
important journey the hero s take on their journey as a hole in the story. The
fundamental parts of most stories consist of twelve parts to the hero s journey and
some supplementary points. The three parts of the hero s journey supernatural aid,
test and supreme ordeal , and reward and journey home. These are some of the most
vital parts of the odyssey.
Odysseus had lots of supernatural aid that had helped him through his story and the
journey he went on . The fundamental point of supernatural aid in the story is that
Odysseus has help from the goddess Athena, who disguised Odysseus as a beggar
( Homer 569 ). Odysseus s role was helped by Athena s cleverness towards
Odysseus . She was able to help him by using her god like powers was that gave
him a boost to do what is right and get back home to be with his family again.
Athena disguises him because Athena appears and informs him of the situation at
home ( Homer 568 ). This part of the story is important because. Supernatural Aid
helps the excursionist in a way that makes his or her adventure easier, but it also
makes it harder for the aid to help after a while this gives Odysseus another reason to
come back home to Ithaca is to fight the suitors trying to kill his son and trying to
seduce his wife even though she thinks he is dead , as well. This
Alcohol Vs Alcohol Research Paper
What is More Dangerous, Marijuana or Alcohol?
In recent times, marijuana has slowly become less and less of a taboo subject. The
gradual legalization has made marijuana a hot topic, both for its recreational uses and
medicinal properties. The biggest questions that remain are, is it dangerous and is it
more dangerous than alcohol? Given the length of time that alcohol has been legal
most people would assume that it is the safer option, but is that true?
Risk from Alcohol
While alcohol may be readily available to anyone over the age of 21, it still comes
with risk both to your judgment and health. According to the CDC, excessive alcohol
consumption leads to around 88,000 deaths annually. Alcohol consumption comes
with both long term and short term effects on a person, such as:
Impairment of judgment leading to injuries from motor vehicle accidents, drowning,
falls and physical instability.
People who are under the influence of alcohol may become violent, which has led to
murder, assault and sexual assault.

Alcohol has been legal since 1933, even though the only benefit of consuming
alcohol in excess, as most people do, is a few possible hours of euphoria. While
marijuana has been illegal since 1937 and has been proven to have medicinal
purposes far beyond its recreational reputation. When comparing them side by side
it is best to keep in mind that both can be vices and both can be beneficial. They
also, will both have a different effect from person to person. According to a study
conducted by, Pew Research, 69% of Americans believe that alcohol is more
dangerous than marijuana. The truth is there isn t a scientific answer to whether or
not one is more dangerous than the other. Both marijuana and alcohol have risk and
until further research is done, consumer opinion will reign the topic of whether or not

Afro-Cuban Racism
Comparing the race problems with those in the United States, that the government

brothers in America, effectively lessens the feelings of racism in Cuba (131 132).
Finally, Sawyer concludes that the advances made in racial relation post Revolution
has been compromised by all the conditions that I have documented previously, and I
agree wholeheartedly with his assessments (131).
Analyzing the relationship with White Cubans and Cuban Americans with Blacks

Elimination of segregation, national free health care, the breaking up of private clubs,

involvement in all areas of government, acknowledgement of Afro Cuban culture, and
interjecting Blacks within the national identification of Cuba were additional positive
results of the Revolution. Reaching out to Black nationalists from America, although
all of the experiences did not end up amicably, was a positive influence on the Black
Nationalist movement worldwide, with the assistance to freedom fighters in Africa,
and being an asylum for political prisoners from America. I agree with Sawyer s

Bosnian Genocide Causes
The Bosnian Genocide is a genocide that began in April 1992 with the goal to
ethnically cleanse Bosnian territory. Serbians targeted Bosniaks (Muslim Bosnians)
and Croatians civilians and aimed to eliminate them through the use of former
Yugoslavian military equipment. Before the genocide began, many different ethnic
and religious groups lived under Yugoslavia s communist regime. Although there was
tension, President Josip Broz Tito was able to keep the country together through
dictatorship. Tito was considered a benevolent dictator and his regime ensured that
the country stayed unified. However, when Tito died in 1980, the tension between
different ethnic and religious groups increased and eventually led to the Bosnian
genocide. Slobodan Milosevic rose to power seven years leader by using nationalism
to his advantage. Milosevic favored the Serbsand and made changes to the
constitution to show this. Milosevic also formed a military that was 90% Serbian.

How Does Westerfeld Use Literary Elements In Leviathan
The use of literary elements is widespread in Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld. This
is shown when Westerfeld uses dramatic irony to highlight a character s
cluelessness. At a certain instance the character, Alek, is comparing himself to
another character, Dylan. Westerfeld writes, In a way Dylan was the sort of boy
Alek would have wanted to be if he hadn t been the son of an archduke (327). This
statement is ironic due to the fact that the boy Alek is referring to is actually a girl
masquerading as a boy. At this point in the book, the reader is fully aware that
Dylan is actually a girl, but none of the other characters know, thus making it an
instance of dramatic irony. The author likely chose to use this literary element to
remind the reader that the characters have been left in the dark about Dylan s true
gender. This use of dramatic irony aided in reminding the reader about one of the
larger story elements present in Leviathan.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the story, Alek and his allies see some of their enemies ahead of them
attempting to locate their position. To avoid being spotted or worse, they are
forced to walk very slowly in their mechanical walking vehicle. To further
emphasize the low speed of of the machine, Westerfeld writes, With the engines at
quarter power, the massive feet moved slowly like walking through syrup (169).
This statement is a simile because it compares the low power of the engines to
being submerged in syrup using the connecting word like. Westerfeld chose to
compare these two things because the mechanical walker was moving very slowly,
just like how something would move through a thick substance like syrup. To
conclude, this use of a simile helped to show a clearer image of the

Artificial Intelligence Argument Essay
Artificial Intelligence is undoubtedly a hotly debated topic in today s society, with
many concerned that it will soon enslave humanity and others saying that it s
harmless and only here to help us. Many sci fi movies, such as the infamous 1984
film produced by James Cameron, The Terminator, portray robots as becoming
knowledgeable and taking over the world. Humanity creates an artificially intelligent
program known as Skynet, which becomes completely cognizant and overthrows the
world by initiating a nuclear holocaust. In the aftermath, a group of survivors creates
a resistance that attempts to destroy the program, however they are met with the
challenge of defeating Skynet s cyborg army. Skynet sends a terminator, played by

Nick Bostrom, a philosopher and the University of Oxford, states that,
...superintelligence could emerge, and while it could be great [...] it could also
decide it doesn t need humans around (Ford). This philosopher, like many other
technology critics, can see the effects that artificial intelligence may have on our
future, however there is always the select group of people who cannot foresee the
consequences of their actions. For example, Victor Frankenstein was introduced to
science at a young age and when he went to college at Ingolstadt he met Professor
Waldman shared a similar scientific interest. Waldman proclaimed, If your wish is
to become really a man of science [...] I should advise you to apply to every branch
of natural philosophy... much like how Waldman himself devotes his life to all
branches of science (Shelley 29). However, this sparked Victor s interested and
caused him to not immediately realize the ramifications of his attempts to bring the
dead back to life, which lead to the death of Victor s loved ones and the destruction of
his world. The entire human race in The Terminator closely resembles Victor
Frankenstein considering that humans create the superintelligent program, Skynet,
which is supposed solely defend the nation s cyber network, however it ends up
taking over the world. This is extremely similar to Victor s situation, in which both he
and humanity neglect

There are no adults to tell us to make a shelter, or to find a clean stream of water. I

expected there to be more than two boys alive from the planewreck, and surely

he would have to give the conch a try because Aunty told me that I can t do things
like that, he said to me, Sucks to your ass mar (Golding 141). I told Ralph to not

However, I am glad that he was chosen over Jack, who scares me. Surely the other

Hydrogen Batteries And Fuel Cells
Introduction Batteries/Fuel Cells Fuel cells operate via a chemical reaction which
generates electricity. All fuel cells contain a positive anode, a negative cathode and
an electrolyte to carry the charged particles through the cell. They also contain a
catalyst which will increase the rate of the reaction occurring. The electricity
produced can then used to power various appliances. This, in turn, creates a circuit
with the current continually flowing in and out of the cell until the reaction ceases .
Recently the development metal air batteries (which can be produced from a range of

previously the anode is composed of Magnesium metal (atomic weight 24.312 )
and is oxidised to produce electrons. The reason this metal is used because it is
lightweight, cheap and has a high standard potential. These fuel cells are also
generally very durable and can be easily stored. Easy storage is made possible by
the fact that a protective film is naturally produced over the positive anode.
However this decreases once some of the energy has been released from the cell.
Hence it is not ideal to be used in a situation where over a long period of time there
are times when the cell is not being used. This is part of the reason why lithium

Considering Students Language Background in Higher Education Assessment
Outcomes:
The Educational Testing Proficiency Profile
The increasing popularity of assessments that measure students college level
knowledge and skills has been accompanied in the past decade by the incremental
population of college students whose native language is not English or who speak
English as a second language (ESL). Higher Education institutions are more often
confronted with the task of considering language background when assessing students
performance. Although the shifting demographics have become evident in the US,
little research exists on outcomes derived of performance assessment of ESL
students. The validity of such tests on non native speakers as well as item analysis
have been subject of minimal research. Considering the implications of college
assessment outcomes, the importance of taking in account language background
when applying these measures becomes significant. The challenge of maintaining
equitability in higher education for all students has been impacted by the growing
number of ESL students from international an immigrant backgrounds. The ESL
student population in colleges and universities may additionally be underestimated
due to students who speak English and another language with the same proficiency or
those who choose not to identify themselves as nonnative English speakers.
Particularly concerning is the validity and equitability of assessment measures
Understanding Multiple Sclerosis Essay
Introduction
Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that majorly affects the brainand the
spinal cord (A.D.A.M. Medical Encyclopedia, 1). The disease affects the central
nervous system and thus causes limitations of individuals to carry out various
activities. In multiple sclerosis, the myelin sheath that covers nerve cell axon is
destroyed causing inflammation (MediResource Inc., 1). Destructionof the membrane
leads to slowed conveyance of signals from the spinal cord to the brain, which as a
result leads to reduced response to different stimuli. Inflammation of the nerve occurs
mostly when the immune cells from the body attack the nervous system. The
inflammation is not only limited to the spinal cord, but sometimes extends to ... Show

According to data from multiple sclerosis foundation, it is estimated that if any of the
parents have thedisease the probability of one of their child getting the disease is
about 5 % (Healthline 4). Scientists have the belief that the persons that are attacked
by the diseases are born with a particular gene that is susceptible some unspecified
environmental agents. Due to these genes, there is an immune response that is
triggered whenever these individuals come into contact with the unspecified
environmental agents.
Environment, within which an individual lives, is also believed to contribute to the
contracting of multiple sclerosis. In countries that are located far away from the
equator there are higher chances of individuals suffering from this disease. This
observation has been made by epidemiologists who believe that limited amount of
vitamin D would be the cause (Healthline 5). People who live further from the
equator have less exposure to sunlight, which is believed to be a natural source of
vitamin D; and it is known to play part in functioning of the immune system. Since
multiple sclerosis is linked to immune system, lack of adequate vitamins D would
contribute to the prevalence of the disease in these places far from the equator.
The other majorcause of multiple sclerosis is infections, which may be attributed to
spread of bacteria or viruses. Inflammation in the nervous system is caused by
viruses, which are believed to be
Is Technology A Distraction Research Paper
Is Technology a Distraction? In today s world, electronic devices are becoming
increasingly conventional and accessible. With the advancement of technology, the
people advance along with it by cultivating and using technology. It is not surprising
that laptops, phones, tablets, and televisions are common in this era. Consequently,
people may engross themselves in these appliances, distracting themselves from
other tasks such as school or work. Technology takes residence in schools, offices,
and homes, making it hard to escape the grasps of it. It is convenient, therefore, it
will have use. Thus, it can lead to problems such as losing quality time on studying,
losing focus, and texting while driving. Technology is essential in today s... Show

Distractions are extremely dangerous to drivers. Accidents and crashes may occur.
It s even worse when gadgets are right at people s fingertips while driving.
According to The National Safety Council, cell phone use while driving leads to
1.6 million crashes each year. (edgarsyndar.com). A driver shifts focus from
driving to the screen of an electronic device. For the whole duration a driver s
attention is on a phone, the car is still moving. Replying to a text takes away about
5 seconds of a driver s attention, which at 55 mph, that s enough time to travel the
length of a football field. (edgarsyndar.com). For a whole length of a football field,
the driver is not as aware of his or her surroundings. No wonder why texting while
driving is such a common cause of car accidents. The accessibility of electronic
devices makes it more convenient and easy to obtain one and thus, the device can be a

Compliance Management Scenario
Sue is the manager of a five physician practice affiliated with a large healthcare
system. She oversees a dozen nurses, front office staff, a two person HIIM
department, and several technicians. As a mid level manager, she reports to
administration of the healthcare system.
One morning Sue was stopped abruptly in the hallway by one of her nurses. The
nurse had received an irate telephone message from a patient s daughter in law and
was passing the information on to Sue for her to follow up on the call. That s your
job to handle, the nurse blurted out, while accompanying a patient into a room.
Soon after, Sue phoned the daughter in law to ask how she could be of service. The

Mrs. Stevens reported that although the family was very upset by the call, they were
glad to know the truth about his condition. Her husband, however, was angered by
the call because he felt blindsided and unprepared for the information.
Sue calmly stated that Mrs. Stevens needed to speak directly with her father in law
about any information related to his medical condition. She promised she would
investigate the incident and would call her back with any further information as to
how this could have happened. Sue apologized repeatedly, and the call ended
amicably.
Sue went up to the busy front desk where phones were ringing and patients were
waiting to schedule appointments. She knew it was not a good time to speak with
the front desk staff. She decided to check the patient management system to see
who had been making the reminder phone calls the day before. She saw that it was
Denise and went back up to the front, leaving a note on Denise s desk that requested
she come see her in her office when the front desk cleared.
Sue then opened the patient s medical record through the electronic record system to
gather more information on Mr. Stevens. She saw that he had just begun treatment
for prostate cancer and saw nothing in the physician dictation indicating that Mr.
Stevens was keeping his medical condition confidential from his family. She also
noticed as she was scrolling through the last name Stevens that
The Effects Of Media On Women s Body Image
The effects of media on women s body image has been a reality long before the
conception of social media. When someone is idealized, it is only natural that one
will gravitate towards the characteristics most define the idealized person. It is
innate in humankind to continuously strive for self betterment as it is a means for
survival. If we perceive someone else doing better than ourselves we try to find out
what they are doing that we aren t. The perception of self is often measurement of
how one feels about their life and the direction it is going. With the emergence of
social media, the number of idealizations has heightened due to the degree of content
that we are exposed to. The internet itself is an endless black hole with an infinite
amount of information. Roughly a third of the world having some form of social
media. In the United States alone, the population on social media is 78%.
The percentage of women who are dissatisfied with their bodies have increased.
Studies have directly linked media and its correlation to women s body image.
Women have developed insecurities because their standards of beauty have been
shaped by their exposure to media. According to the journal titled, Women s exposure
to thin and beautiful media images: body image effects of media ideal internalization
and impact reduction interventions television characters are overrepresented while
overweight characters are (Yamamiya et al., 2005). Leading to the normalization of

The Impacts of Decisions and Outcomes in Hernando
Tellez’s...
As human beings, it is inevitable to face moral dilemmas in life. When it comes to
decision making of a complex situation, individuals often consider their own values
and consequences to their actions. Hernando Tellez s Lather and Nothing Else and
Edith Pargeter s The Purple Children demonstrate the conflicts a person has with
themselves when approached with a challenging situation which requires decision
making. The barber from Lather and Nothing Else and the sentry from The Purple
Children demonstrate the importance of placing one s own values as a priority when
making a difficult choice because it will allow the individual to make peace with the
outcome. Individuals who give more worth to penalties that would put themselves at
risk than those costs that do not affect them as much are more likely to be content
with their decisions. For example, the temptation of murderthat the Barber felt when
shaving Captain Torres was overruled by the punishments that the Barber would
have to encounter, He wouldn t suffer. But what would I do with the body? Where
would I hide it? I d have to run, leaving all of this, take cover far, far away. But they
would follow me until they ran into me. Captain Torres murderer. He cut his throat
while he was shaving him. What a coward (Tellez). This establishes an in depth
moral dilemma that the barber encounters when deciding to give in to his temptations
or to stick to his values as a person. This conflict represents the flood
Subject Matter Of Apollomeo
Subject Matter The painting is part of a series of canvases with mythological
themes. Since antiquity Apollo the embodiment of the high, the spiritual principle
in man. For artists who created paintings on the subjects mentioned, the Apollo
was a symbol of the high purpose of art, and Ban with Marsyas a symbol of vulgar,
coarse pseudo catering to the crowd and wakes up in her base instincts. The
appearance of a satyr Marsyas nothing like the ideal of beauty. The artist depicts
him as if he was a messenger of hell. The main idea of the complex and dramatic

who cynically use art to awaken in man instincts and passions. This painting is

horror of the situation presented. For arrogance satyr stripped off his skin.
Executioner Marsyas advocates Apollo himself, having fallen to terrible cruelty of
man he sits on his haunches with a knife in his hand, already sentenced to
punishment. This is the tragedy of the story, the artist puts just punishing knife in
hand of Apollo, which is on par with gross executioners administers a terrible
penalty. The central figure of the picture the once haughty satyr Marsyas expresses
the pain and suffering from the cruelty of Apollo and regret for what he did. The
agonized face of Marsyas illustrates the artist s penchant for conveying intense
emotion. At the same time look attracts a figure sitting on the left of the main
character it resembles the artist who receives a strange pleasure from the observed

depicting this despair and fear. But they do not play a big role, because the picture

The Influence Of Hannibal In Rome
Hannibal played an important role in the history of the western world( not only in
Rome, but also in Carthaginian); Hannibal not only had positive impact but also
negative impact. Hannibal contributed mostly in military. During his life, Hannibal
took part in many wars and had many achievements. These achievements are
especially in the aspects of important events which he created in time of war, his
thinking of military strategy, and his speaking or action also influence on other
people. Primarily, it goes without any doubt that Hannibal created an important
event: he leaded the Second Punic War. And the turning point of this war was
Hannibal s crossing of the Alps . Hannibal crossed the Alps in 218 BC during the
Second Punic War. Today, there is a concern on why did Hannibal cross the Alps.
According to doctor Chu who is now a famous professor of European history in
Zhejiang university: To defeat Rome, Hannibal must intrude into Rome itself. Rome
had command of the sea from south to north Africa at that time, so that Hannibal s
troops can only attack Rome on land, but on road, there were Roman troops
everywhereпјЊas a result Hannibal had to choose to cross Alps which was a
seemingly impossible place to breakthrough. (ChuпјЊ2014). This achievement is
bases on that Hannibal knew the rule deeply that enemy won t defense the place...

For example, in the the Second Punic War Hannibal set his light armed troops and
cavalry in motion to meet him, and charging the Romans while they were still
marching, took them by surprise and caused a great confusion in their ranks.
(Polybius, 110) This book meanly wrote about the wars which leaded by Hannibal,
including the Second Punic War. From this action, the strategy of Hannibal was very
useful. It s extraordinary that general can come up with so effective strategy at the
time of war and this shows that Hannibal was an extraordinary

Police Officer Essay. Final cop essay by emilyscott54889 - Issuu

  • 1. Police Officer Essay Crafting an essay on the subject of a police officer requires a delicate balance between addressing the complexities of the role and presenting a nuanced perspective on law enforcement. The task is challenging as it necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted nature of policing, encompassing aspects such as community relations, ethical considerations, and the evolving challenges faced by law enforcement agencies. One difficulty arises in navigating the polarized opinions surrounding police officers, with debates often centering on issues like use of force, accountability, and systemic concerns. Striking a fair and unbiased tone becomes crucial to provide a well-rounded view, acknowledging both the admirable aspects of the profession and the areas where improvement is needed. Moreover, delving into the historical context of law enforcement and its evolution over time adds another layer of intricacy. An effective essay would require a deep dive into the origins of policing, its societal functions, and how it has adapted to changing circumstances. Balancing historical perspectives with current realities adds a level of complexity to the task. The task is further compounded by the need for extensive research to ensure accuracy and credibility. To offer a nuanced and informed discussion, the writer must engage with a variety of sources, ranging from academic articles and case studies to firsthand accounts and expert opinions. This demands time and effort to sift through diverse viewpoints and synthesize them into a coherent narrative. Lastly, maintaining a sense of empathy and understanding throughout the essay is challenging but crucial. A thoughtful exploration of the human side of being a police officer, acknowledging the challenges they face and the impact on their mental and emotional well-being, adds depth to the essay. Balancing this empathy with a critical analysis of systemic issues is no small feat. In conclusion, writing an essay on the topic of police officers requires a delicate dance between presenting a nuanced perspective, navigating polarized opinions, delving into historical contexts, conducting extensive research, and maintaining empathy throughout. It is a task that demands careful consideration and a commitment to fostering a balanced and informed dialogue on this complex subject. If you find yourself struggling with such essays or any other academic writing tasks, professional assistance is available. Services likeHelpWriting.net provide support in crafting well-researched and thoughtfully written essays on a variety of topics, ensuring that your academic needs are met with expertise and reliability. • 2. Jamaics s Economic Downfall Initial Conditions Jamaica approached the International Monetary Fund in 1979 as a result of its chronic balance of payment issues. This problem was triggered chiefly by the oil crises of the mid seventies and the bauxite industry s declining revenues. As a result, producers cut production in response to a Government imposed ban on bauxite as a form of retaliation. The government then began borrowing at a rapid pace from the Central Bank and overseas institutions in an attempt to facilitate and maintain previous levels of spending. By 1977, only US$30 million was available from the US$120 million in 1975 and Government had run out of reserves after trying unsuccessfully to ration its supply. A series of controls that were imposed and aimed at stemming the outflow of reserves, simply resulted in a large parallel foreign exchange market and the government was eventually forced to devalue the currency. With the arrival of the 1980 s, Jamaica saw accelerating inflation, falling output, a severe foreign exchange crisis, and political and social tensions. Within the five month period between the end of 1987 and May of 1988, there was a 95% devaluation of the Jamaican dollar. In addition, the external debt increased steadily throughout the 1980s reaching US$4.5 billion in 1989, or equivalent to 125% of GDP. By the nineties, the situation continued to be unfavorable for Jamaica with balance of payments problems still existing, depressed growth due to the falling export

  • 4. Formalistic Analysis of Hills Like White Elephants In an analysis of the story Hills like white elephants by Ernest Hemmingway, one is forced to take a deep look at the hidden meanings embedded in the story. Considering the point of view, the significance of the location and its relevance to the story, the structure of the text, the symbolic meaning of the two landscapes and the title of the story, the entrails of the story are exposed. Hemmingway s story is written in an objective or dramatic point of view. The story is told primarily through dialogue. The narrator has emotionally distanced himself from the characters, and the true feelings and opinions of the characters are revealed in little clues as the story progresses. The narrator acts solely as a reporter of the chain of events... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She says, Everything tastes of licorice. (Sweet)...all the things you ve waited so long for, like absinthe (bitter), the combination is bittersweet. A deeper reading leads to a new understanding of the symbolic meaning of the two landscape descriptions. They were in stark contrast to each other. One side was barren and arid, the other green and fertile. The valley of the Ebro was long and white... there was no shade and no trees... On the other side, were fields of grain and trees. These opposing landscapes symbolize the contrasting options available to the couple. The dry side of the valley represented the choice to abort the unborn child and continue with an empty life filled shallow experiences, (looking) at things and (trying) new drinks. The fertile side of the valley represents the life the woman desires, one filled with family and meaningful moments. The story then shifts to the station which was between two lines of rails this represented the two opposite directions in which they could have traveled, and the choice that lay in each direction, Madrid being the place of abortion, and the continuity of the empty life they were used to together, or toward Barcelona, a new start, a new beginning, with a new life. So railroad station represented a crossroads or junction at which they had to cross. The title of the story was simile. The title hills like white elephants also represented the choice that the couple had to make. A

During this time, gentle range of motion activities began involving the wrist and the elbow in both flexionand extension. The athlete also worked on grip strength with putty, increasing the time and intensity as needed. In addition to these activities, isometric elbow contractions added to the intensity of the rehabilitation. After the rehabilitation sessions finished, the athlete iced the injured area. The countless essays and speeches have helped me to become a better writer, and speaker. Prior to my time in CommSkills, I would write without a goal. Instead of procrastinating by going for a run or to the gym, I went to special olympics events on tuesdays and thursdays. I was not required to do more than ten hours of service work for class, but once I started I truly could not stop. I loved and still love, taking the time to support people with disabilities, but it did not only help them. I always leave Special Olympics events with a refreshed perspective on life. It puts into perspective both your happiness and the daily struggles we all face. If my friends at Special Olympics bowling can come every week with a smile on their face and put their best foot forward, so can I. We all face our own problems in life and working with the Special Olympics always redefines my concept of what is possible and what is

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After the French loss in the Franco Prussian War and the abolishment of the monarchy under Napoleon III, the Germans used Versailles to announce the unification of the German Empire under Otto von Bismarck and Kaiser Wilhelm I. Following this moment, Versailles would never represent the French King or nobility, but rather as a magnificent value to Baroque art and architecture. However, this does not diminish its historical and societal value and significance. The Palace of Versailles was used in the signing of the 1919 Armistice, ending World War I. In the late twentieth century, Versailles was opened to the public for tours. I have personally been to Versailles and it is as magnificent as it sounds. 8. a.Elements: i.Value: Based on the fact of the price to create this palace and the values it contains, Versailles clearly is a very valuable and important part of French, if not Western European, history. It represents the nobility and clergy that ruled France for centuries. It also represents power and peace, as this Palace was used historically to display both of these aspects. ii. Shape: The Versailles that is widely recognized today was conceived in the early eighteenth century, following the death of Louis XIV. A U shape was adopted by the architects and more rooms were planned. The shape of the palace represents its grant size. From the right angle, the palace can fill your entire field of vision. The

Rand tosses this question around for a while, before answering it with resounding clarity. In essence, Dagny refuses to satisfy the desires of the people simply because they demand such right. Imagine, the year is 2150 and a student is sitting at her desk looking within at latest technology, she thinks about lost poets that history books have shunned for the significance of more famous poets. As a child in modern society, the importance of lesser known poets, such as Thomas Traherne and George Herbert, are considered valuable for their philosophical influence in poetry. Over the course of time literature has become a melting pot of ideas borrowed from other poets and literary works, which are coagulated into one another to make a new idea. People in modern society need to understand the importance of remembrance in the similarities in the backgrounds, metaphysical influences, and written works of Thomas Traherne and George Herbert. It is astonishing how both poets have similar upbringings with almost a 100 year gap between them. The background of Thomas Traherne presented by Richard Firth has stated that Thomas Traherne was born within the wall of Hereford City in 1637 (page 1). At the age of five, the British Civil War marched into his town where they beheaded King Charles I. Later that year, Treharne left to attend the Hereford Cathedral School. After graduation, he then attended Brasenose College in Oxford, earning his BA (Bachelor of the Arts) in 1656. During the years of 1657 1660, he wrote his first complete work titled, Select

The table are located at the close of this section.] The sustainable growth rate is the rate at which a firm can grow while keeping its profitability and financial policies unchanged. The model allows an analyst to isolate drivers that have led to changes in historical growth in order to isolate causes of change. It is represented in four steps. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One area is financial leverage. Issuing debt allows Costco to increase its return on equity as long as the return on invested capital is greater than the cost of debt. If Costco s core business earns 12% return on invested capital but it can borrow the debt at a lower rate, financial leverage would increase the ROE. Financial leverage is expressed as the ratio: #8721; Assets to Equity = Assets / Owners Equity Costco s assets to equity ratio has fallen slightly from 2.21 to 2.06. This means that for every dollar of invested capital Costco acquires $2.06 worth of assets in 2001 verses $2.21 worth of assets in 1997. This may indicate that less assets are being acquired. If less assets are acquired, less sales may be generated and if less sales are generated there is less net income yielding less return for shareholders and a less attractive investment opportunity. Wal Mart Corp has had very inconsistent asset to equity ratio form year to year which makes it difficult to draw any conclusion regarding investment. Such inconsistency could be an indication of Sears asset to equity ratio had been consistent decreasing from 6.60 to 5.45 until 2001 when it increased to 7.24. This is the highest ratio of any Costco competitor. Although this ratio is high, the instability of the number over the periods measured may discourage investment. BJ s Wholesale has demonstrated

Introduced Ancient Egypt was a civilization of ancient Northeastern Africa, concentrated along the lower reaches of the Nile River in what is now the modern country of Egypt. It is one of six civilizations to arise independently. Egyptian civilization followed prehistoric Egypt and coalesced around 3150 BC with the political unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under the first pharaoh Narmer. The history of ancient Egypt occurred in a series of stable kingdoms, separated by periods of relative instability known as Intermediate Periods: the Old Kingdom of the Early Bronze Age, theMiddle Kingdom of theMiddle Bronze Age and the New Kingdom of the Late Bronze Age. The majority of Egyptians were peasants who farmed small plots of land, they were tied to their land, and were required to provide services to the ruling class, such as working on the construction of temples and public works. Archaeological research shows that the average Egyptian peasant lived fairly well, with an adequate diet consisting mainly of bread and beer, with some vegetables such as onions, garlic, and fruits. The average Egyptian would only eat meat on holidays, while the wealthier would eat meat more frequently. The home of an Egyptian peasant was invariably built of mud bricks, and was well designed to stay cool inside despite the hot days. The stoves did not have chimneys and instead the smoke veneted directly through an opening in the roof. The inside of the house was simply decorated but did not lack comfort: the floors were usually covered with reed mats. The ancient Egyptians gave great importance to hygiene and appearance. They bathed frequently in the Nile and used soap pastes based on animal fat and chalk. The men shaved their heads and their entire bodies and used perfumes and aromatic ointments to cover bad odors. It was normal for men, as well as wealthier women. The Egyptians wore clothes made from sheets of white
  • 16. Blood Wedding By Federico Garcia Lorca In 1930s Spain, the ritual of marriage became highly controversial as the 1931 Constitution allowed for divorce to be legal. This caused debate between older and younger generations. The elders of society still had their beliefs deeply rooted in the views of the Catholic Church , which did not allow for divorce. Nonetheless, the younger generation was more prone to giving into desire and therefore was more open to the idea. The play Blood Weddingby Federico Garcia Lorca insinuates the strong importance of ritual in the 1930s. Due to this, in the play, ritual is revered and ironclad while desire is shunned. When Leonardo comes to the wedding of Bride the clash between desire and ritual is made evident. Nonetheless, ritual is made... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, when Leonardo whisks Bride away, ritual is threatened. Lorca also shows how desire should be kept hidden away in society by the running away of Bride and Leonardo being made off stage. He shows that people would rather pretend that desire does not even exist making their running away hidden signifying that. Additionally, the setting of Act 3 adds to the feeling of desire. Forests have been known in plays to be a place of surrealism. Leonardo and Bride get married in the forest as their ability to be together is like a dream come true for them and it would not be possible anywhere else. In any other place, ritual would have had more precedence and strength because society endorses it due to the beliefs of the Catholic Church. All in all, desire is not imperative to society in the play and in that time period. Blood Wedding portrays ritual excessively; even the title Wedding is a religious sacrament. Thus, it should come as no surprise that Lorca encompasses ritual into the hunting down of Leonardo and Bride. As soon as everyone learns that the two are gone, Mother dispatches people to go look for them and says, It s come again: the hour of blood (p. 44). From this phrase, one can see that the hour of blood has come before. It is an accepted ritual to hunt down and kill a runaway bride or anyone who challenges ritual. No one is disturbed by the impending murder because it is a tradition a way of living. Desire has

When an ingroup is threatened by an outgroup, identity and self worth are also threatened. There are three options for them to choose from: gold, silver, and lead. All three chests are inscribed with short phrases on the outside that hint to their contents. These chests are symbolic of several human natures and beliefs that become clear when the contents of the chest are revealed. The first chest is sparkling gold and brilliantly decorated. Inscribed on the outside is, who chooseth me shall gain what many men desire. When chosen and opened, all that s inside is a skull holding a taunting message of failure. The message inside reads all that glitters is not gold. The gold casket represents greed, showing that those who chose the gold because of their own desire are shallow and selfish. They didn t consider what was inside, only their own wishes, and this caused those suitors to lose the lottery. This is symbolic of the idea that a desirable outside doesn t mean the inside is as great. Workers became more numerous, better organized, more disciplined, and more successful even though employers tried to stop them (Who Built America 113). Many of these workers led strikes for better hours, better wages and better conditions. When comparing the 1800s to today, we see that strikes were very effective, an example of this is shown in the 8 hour movement. Unions helped win more than 60 percent of the strikes waged in 1889 and 1890 (Who Built America 113). Due to these workers, employees now face fewer obstacles. Whenever workers felt as though they were being taken advantage of they could refuse to work, if they withdraw their cooperation, every social institution can be brought to a halt (Brecher 5). Without workers, the employers will have no one to complete products therefore not being able to make a profit. Subsequently, employees will have leverage over the employers so they can finally sit down and negotiate their conditions. This was shown in the Michigan Central Railroad where workers fought for their wages to increase by two dollars. The workers exhibited their resistance when streetcars, wagons, and buggies were stopped; tanneries, stoneworks, clothing factories, lumberyards, brickyards, furniture factories, and a large distillery was closed in response to roving crowds (Brecher 31). The result of this strike was victorious, and 2 dollars a day became the standard wage in Galveston (Brecher 31). This strike was important because it exhibited to others that if they unite then they can achieve better conditions. If the workers did not unionize they would not have achieved equality in the workforce and better wages and conditions. Without resistance, these workers would have never gotten negotiations or the necessities they need. Even if workers lost because of outside interference they eventually had the power to change the minds of

Power struggles are widespread and unique in context, but these struggles are not special in the presence or complexity of the self versus other conflict within them. One of the strongest examples for this assertion is the First Crusades. At face value, any observer can immediately take notice of the separation between those of Christian faith and those of Islamic faith. If additional diligence in research is provided, any one of these observers begins to find the endlessly deeper self versus other struggles present on both sides, specifically amongst the Christian military. Numerous accounts from Christian actors serve to support this argument; the recorded thoughts of both soldiers and intellectuals detail the surprising amount of divisions between what should be the Christian united. The relationship between the self and the other present in the mindset of the actors of the Crusades shows that a definite, dynamic, yet necessary division between all groups of people exists, no matter the already established bonds of any collective. Nick Bostrom, a philosopher and the University of Oxford, states that, ...superintelligence could emerge, and while it could be great [...] it could also decide it doesn t need humans around (Ford). This philosopher, like many other technology critics, can see the effects that artificial intelligence may have on our future, however there is always the select group of people who cannot foresee the consequences of their actions. For example, Victor Frankenstein was introduced to science at a young age and when he went to college at Ingolstadt he met Professor Waldman shared a similar scientific interest. Waldman proclaimed, If your wish is to become really a man of science [...] I should advise you to apply to every branch of natural philosophy... much like how Waldman himself devotes his life to all branches of science (Shelley 29). However, this sparked Victor s interested and caused him to not immediately realize the ramifications of his attempts to bring the dead back to life, which lead to the death of Victor s loved ones and the destruction of his world. The entire human race in The Terminator closely resembles Victor Frankenstein considering that humans create the superintelligent program, Skynet, which is supposed solely defend the nation s cyber network, however it ends up taking over the world. This is extremely similar to Victor s situation, in which both he and humanity neglect

There are no adults to tell us to make a shelter, or to find a clean stream of water. I found another boy, his name is Ralph. He is taller and much thinner than I am. I expected there to be more than two boys alive from the planewreck, and surely enough there were more survivors. I found a conch shell to lure the others; of course I could not blow it myself on account of my asthma. When I told Ralph that he would have to give the conch a try because Aunty told me that I can t do things like that, he said to me, Sucks to your ass mar (Golding 141). I told Ralph to not tell the others about the mean nickname I have from home, but he did anyways. However, I am glad that he was chosen over Jack, who scares me. Surely the other boys will notice that my brains outweigh their brawn sooner or later. If they do not, I may be spending more time on this island than I care for. • 41. Hydrogen Batteries And Fuel Cells Introduction Batteries/Fuel Cells Fuel cells operate via a chemical reaction which generates electricity. All fuel cells contain a positive anode, a negative cathode and an electrolyte to carry the charged particles through the cell. They also contain a catalyst which will increase the rate of the reaction occurring. The electricity produced can then used to power various appliances. This, in turn, creates a circuit with the current continually flowing in and out of the cell until the reaction ceases . Recently the development metal air batteries (which can be produced from a range of metals from Aluminium to Zinc Primary and Secondary Batteries) have become very important. This coupled with the fact that there is no shortage of Magnesium on the planet means that the resources, although finite, are unlikely to run out and so Magnesium is an ideal material to use. Also the properties of the metal, such as reactivity, toxicity etc are ideal for this applicationi. Materials Involved in the production of Magnesium Air Batteries Anode As mentioned previously the anode is composed of Magnesium metal (atomic weight 24.312 ) and is oxidised to produce electrons. The reason this metal is used because it is lightweight, cheap and has a high standard potential. These fuel cells are also generally very durable and can be easily stored. Easy storage is made possible by the fact that a protective film is naturally produced over the positive anode. However this decreases once some of the energy has been released from the cell. Hence it is not ideal to be used in a situation where over a long period of time there are times when the cell is not being used. This is part of the reason why lithium batteries are
  • 42. Considering Students Language Background On Higher... Considering Students Language Background in Higher Education Assessment Outcomes: The Educational Testing Proficiency Profile The increasing popularity of assessments that measure students college level knowledge and skills has been accompanied in the past decade by the incremental population of college students whose native language is not English or who speak English as a second language (ESL). Higher Education institutions are more often confronted with the task of considering language background when assessing students performance. Although the shifting demographics have become evident in the US, little research exists on outcomes derived of performance assessment of ESL students. The validity of such tests on non native speakers as well as item analysis have been subject of minimal research. Considering the implications of college assessment outcomes, the importance of taking in account language background when applying these measures becomes significant. The challenge of maintaining equitability in higher education for all students has been impacted by the growing number of ESL students from international an immigrant backgrounds. The ESL student population in colleges and universities may additionally be underestimated due to students who speak English and another language with the same proficiency or those who choose not to identify themselves as nonnative English speakers. Particularly concerning is the validity and equitability of assessment measures

The disease affects the central nervous system and thus causes limitations of individuals to carry out various activities. In multiple sclerosis, the myelin sheath that covers nerve cell axon is destroyed causing inflammation (MediResource Inc., 1). Destructionof the membrane leads to slowed conveyance of signals from the spinal cord to the brain, which as a result leads to reduced response to different stimuli. Inflammation of the nerve occurs mostly when the immune cells from the body attack the nervous system. The inflammation is not only limited to the spinal cord, but sometimes extends to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to data from multiple sclerosis foundation, it is estimated that if any of the parents have thedisease the probability of one of their child getting the disease is about 5 % (Healthline 4). Scientists have the belief that the persons that are attacked by the diseases are born with a particular gene that is susceptible some unspecified environmental agents. Due to these genes, there is an immune response that is triggered whenever these individuals come into contact with the unspecified environmental agents. Environment, within which an individual lives, is also believed to contribute to the contracting of multiple sclerosis. In countries that are located far away from the equator there are higher chances of individuals suffering from this disease. This observation has been made by epidemiologists who believe that limited amount of vitamin D would be the cause (Healthline 5). People who live further from the equator have less exposure to sunlight, which is believed to be a natural source of vitamin D; and it is known to play part in functioning of the immune system. Since multiple sclerosis is linked to immune system, lack of adequate vitamins D would contribute to the prevalence of the disease in these places far from the equator. The other majorcause of multiple sclerosis is infections, which may be attributed to spread of bacteria or viruses. Inflammation in the nervous system is caused by viruses, which are believed to be

When someone is idealized, it is only natural that one will gravitate towards the characteristics most define the idealized person. If we perceive someone else doing better than ourselves we try to find out what they are doing that we aren t. • 48. The Impacts of Decisions and Outcomes in Hernando Tellez’s... As human beings, it is inevitable to face moral dilemmas in life. When it comes to decision making of a complex situation, individuals often consider their own values and consequences to their actions. Hernando Tellez s Lather and Nothing Else and Edith Pargeter s The Purple Children demonstrate the conflicts a person has with themselves when approached with a challenging situation which requires decision making. The barber from Lather and Nothing Else and the sentry from The Purple Children demonstrate the importance of placing one s own values as a priority when making a difficult choice because it will allow the individual to make peace with the outcome. Individuals who give more worth to penalties that would put themselves at risk than those costs that do not affect them as much are more likely to be content with their decisions. For example, the temptation of murderthat the Barber felt when shaving Captain Torres was overruled by the punishments that the Barber would have to encounter, He wouldn t suffer. But what would I do with the body? Where would I hide it? I d have to run, leaving all of this, take cover far, far away. But they would follow me until they ran into me. Captain Torres murderer.
