The Professional teacher is the “licensed professional who
possesses dignity and reputation with high moral values as
well as technical and professional competence. He/she
adheres to observes and practices a set a ethical and moral
principles, standards and values.”

3. A professional teacher also is the who undergoes rigorous
preparation on teaching for about four to five years.
He/she is registered then in the roster of professional
teachers at the Professional Regulation Commission as
he/she passed the test given by the PRC and after he/she
fulfilled the requirements prescribed by the law, and that
is to pass the Licensure Examination for Teacher (LET).

Teacher
A professional teacher perceives himself/herself as
someone who can effect change or learning (sense of
efficacy) because he/she is an expert in what he/she
teaches (subject matter knowledge) and in how he/she
teaches (pedagogical knowledge).

Teacher
A professional teacher possesses the following attributes;
- Control of the knowledge base of teaching and learning and use of this
knowledge to guide the science and art of his/her teaching practice.
- Repertoire of best teaching practice and can use these to instruct their
children in the classroom and to work with adults in the school setting.
- Dispositions and skills to approach all aspects of his/her work in a
reflective, collegial, and problem-solving manner
- View of learning to teach as a life-long process and dispositions and
skills for working towards improving his/her own teaching as well as
improving schools (Arends, 1994)
The last attribute cited by Arends highlights continuing professional
development (cpd) or continuing professonal education (cpe). As the
quotation goes, “Once a teacher, forever a student.”
6. Personal Attributes of a Teacher
Personality is the sum of one’s personal
characteristics. It is one’s identity.
Personalities may be described as authoritarian, weak,
dynamic, or “magnetic”.

Some outstanding personal qualities that never fail to win
their flock are worth mentioning;
1. Passion
It is the teachers drive which makes them care more
for their students guided by reformative actions. It is the
sense of living and dying as a teacher.

rapport as a clean joke will always bring laughter to the
class which promotes the spirit of togetherness. This also
helps for emerging the two worlds – Youth (Happy and

Teachers are models of values that exhibited implicitly and
explicitly. This connotes standards, code of ethics and strong beliefs
among teachers.
A teacher must be open-minded. This is the basic in promoting
respect and trust between teachers and students. This characteristics
helps in searching new information and evidence as this promotes
solving problem in a democratic way. On which, this creates a free
exchange of suggestions that develops a respectful attitude towards
the teacher and its learner.
10. Personal Attributes of a Teacher
Teachers must also be fair and impartiality in treating the
students. This characteristics eliminates discrimination. He/she must
not be biased and objective in judging the works and performance of
the student. Fairness inculcates self confidence and trust among
students.
Aside from that, a teacher must also posses sincerity and
honesty in himself/herself. They are always observed; their
mannerism, habits and speech are watched and sometimes imitated.
He/she should show his/her real self to avoid pretences and half-
truths. Sincerity dictates to stick to the truth to the extent that he/she
accepts that they don’t know about the lesson. This should not be
covered up but to be accepted rather.
11. Personal Attributes of a Teacher
As being said that teachers are professionals, they
should act like one. Aside from mannerism, habit and
speech, teachers are also adjudge if they are
knowledgeable, skilled and value laden. Teachers should
internalized the edicts of the profession, thus exhibiting
ethical and moral conduct. The result of having this
characteristic is that they earn respect and high esteem
from students and colleagues.

In teaching, patience refers to a teacher’s
uncomplaining nature, self-control and persistence.
Patient teachers can forego momentous frustrations and
disappointments. They endure students limitation and
difficulties.

It is synonymous to eagerness and excitements.
Teachers should have full energy and be dynamic in
teaching. With enthusiastic teachers, students look

duties and responsibilities mandated by the laws and code
of ethics of the profession. Committed teachers are caring

Dedication to the teaching job is the true essence of
professionalism. Today we lament over the fast
disappearing breed of teachers with a missionary spirit.

higher student achievement especially in the area of science and
mathematics.

manner while maintaining appropriate teacher-student role structure.
5. High levels of motivation in teachers relate to high levels of
achievement in students.
6. Effective teachers display positive attitudes about life and
teaching.
7. Teachers whose students have high achievement rates continually
mention reflection on their work as an important part of improving
their teaching.
