Belmont President Dr. Bob Fisher signed the Talloires Declaration of the Association of University Leaders for a Sustainable Future (USLF). In signing the declaration, the university presidents agreed to increase awareness of environmentally sustainable development, create an institutional culture of sustainability and educate for environmentally responsible citizenship, among other efforts.

One of the major trends in our present world is the global rush to renewable energy captured from natural processes. While the world moves to generate clean energy systems that do not contribute to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate change, non-inclusion of social consciousness and several other impacts on the ecosystem are unveiling the grey areas of these renewables.
Generally, any intention to satisfy a given dimension of sustainability at the cost of others, for example conserving the environment without considering the health hazard or economic hardship to the people, becomes an unsustainable practice.
Therefore, is renewable energy really sustainable? Find out in the set of following slides.
On Friday, July 9th, the Central Texas American Planning Association (APA) learned by the Sustainable Sites Initiative from the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center's own Dr. Steve Windhager.
The goal of Sustainable Sites Initiative is to do for landscape design what LEED certification has done for building design. Under the Sustainable Sites Initiative, sites qualify for certification (1 star, 2 star, 3 star, and 4 star) based on a 250 point scale. As of June 2010, 174 pilot projects were started under the Sustainable Site Initiative.

What is the role of public policy in improving connections between education and work?
“It seeks to improve our understanding of several fundamental dimensions of this issue through insights from federal, state and local policy leaders, college administrators and researchers.”
Guest speakers include Eduardo Ochoa, assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Education; former Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell; Lori Shorr, chief education officer to Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter; Charles Kolb from the Committee for Economic Development in Washington, D.C.; Claudia Neuhauser from the University of Minnesota; Bethany Krom from the Mayo Clinic; and Harry Holzer from Georgetown University.
“Much recent attention focuses on the need to improve high school graduation and college degree completion. But, relatively less attention has focused on whether graduates and degree recipients have the skills and education required by employers,” Perna said.
