The Pros And Cons Of Homeopathic Treatment
Even Samuel Hahnemann, the father of homeopathic treatment, took up cudgels against the allopathic way of treatment where the worst thing, he
claimed, was that one kind made another necessary. He was of the firm conviction that that allopathic treated a patient with medicines and formulae
which, while curing one chronic illness, brought about another which was dissimilar to the one which had just been treated. He was a firm believer of
nature's cure which never planted another illness in the patient while curing the one.
The word homeopathy derives from two Greek words 'homo,' meaning 'similar,' and pathos, meaning 'suffering.' Homeopathic treatments are generally
using dilutions of natural substances from plants, minerals, and animals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That is why a patient is aware of the fact that homeopathic treatment takes time and patience. For chronic health problem, one should be prepared to
commit longer time – like 6 months or so – to get desired result. Typically, a homeopathic doctor prescribes changes in diet and in lifestyle as part of
the plan. If you cannot commit to time and discipline, you should consider other form of medical treatment. Homeopath can cure mental and emotional
stress. Homeopathic remedies target to influence the state of mind, relieve motions and bring harmonious state of health. Thus Homeopathy treatment
demonstrates the possibility of higher goal of medicine. It is a therapy for the person as a whole rather than for the disease alone. Homeopathic doctors
believe in the holistic medical model, which states that an illness is specific to the individual, very subjective. Homeopathy treatment not only cures the
presenting symptoms but also reestablishes internal order at the deeper levels and thereby provides a long lasting cure. Especially if applied at the
onset of the disease, Homeopathy treatment is of great value in reversing and recovering diseases, such as diabetes, arthritis, epilepsy, bronchial asthma,
skin eruptions, allergic conditions, and mental or emotional

Acupuncture – this technique is also considered to be a complimentary therapy. Acupuncture is a type of an ancient Chinese medicine that has been
practiced for thousands of years by the Chinese. This technique is basically where you inject refined needles that have been sterile into the patient's
body.
Practitioners use this method to master a bunch of both medical and health conditions like depression, arthritis and tendonitis and much more. It is
commonly used to treat conditions that have something to do with pain like headaches and chronic back pains.

Patient teaching is an essential part of the healing procedure. Deliberately knowing how to diet, exercise and sleep can have an impression on the
patient's physical and mental health and this is a vital tool to uphold one's health and vitality.
People used to believe that acupuncture works by conserving and balancing the movement of Qi in the person's body. Qi is basically an idea that is
hard to interpret it to other people who do not have much of a grasp on it. It is usually associated with vital energy and has also been included with
different western traditions of philosophy.
The idea of Qi is a lot more complicated. But it intersects both living and non–living objects in nature and universe.
The effectiveness of acupuncture:
Overall, I think that acupuncture indulges in a prime role of acupuncturist in finding out to what degree the patients are involved in acupuncture
medications and how to carry out the process of putting in the needles around specific areas in the patient's body correctly.
There has been an argument that this technique spreads further than needling with various therapist–associated that is not specific to the issues being
essential to the therapy which can also possibly affect the results.

The Effect Of Placebos And Their Effect On The Brain And Body
Introduction
Henry Beecher (1904–1976) was a physician who treated wounded soldiers in America during World War II. When he ran out of pain
–killing
morphine, he decided not to tell the wounded soldiers. Instead he kept telling them that he was giving them morphine, while he was actually giving a
saline. Surprisingly, almost 40 percent of the wouded soldiers that were given the saline said their pain was actually reduced by the treatment. Breecher
had discovered what is called the placebo effect. (Beecher, 1955)
Currently we have more knowledge on placebos and their effect, as placebos are getting more important in medicine. In this essay the main question is:
What is the effect of a placebo on the brain and body? The placebo effect is very important, because it shows how important perception is and what the
role of the brain is in physical health. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A placebo, also called dummy pill, is a simulated or otherwise medically ineffectual treatment for a disease or other medical condition. It could be a
pill, a shot, pharmacological therapy, or some other type of treatment. The thing all placebos have in common is that they do not contain an active drug
ingredient.
Sometimes patients given a placebo treatment will have a perceived or actual improvement in a medical condition. This phenomenon is commonly
called the placebo effect or placebo response. The placebo effect occurs with both real and fake medicins, because of the expectation of a patient that
receives the treatment. The expectations of a patient can also be negative. Then the treatment can cause negative effects, which is known as the nocebo

Argumentative Essay On Homeopathy
Homoeopathy is a modality that is commonly used by naturopaths. It is one of the most controversial therapies in the world and is highly critiqued
by the medical profession. This essay will critically evaluate the controversy surrounding this modality as well as give reasons why clinical trials do
not support it. Suggestions regarding actions that can be taken to foster a more collaborative model of practice between homoeopaths and other
medical professions will be discussed as well as an assertion on the value of homoeopathy in naturopathic practice.
Many conventional practitioners find homeopathy implausible due to several key concepts not being consistent with fundamental concepts of science.

Personal Narrative : A Short Story
Saturday, November 15, 2014. By all accounts, it was a day like any other. The sun rose and set between the barren branches of the trees as my family
and I took shelter from the cold. That night, my father, mother, and brother were watching curling downstairs as I nestled in the dark of my room,
listening to music through my headphones. At one point, there was a loud crash from the next room over – my parents' bedroom – and my cats went
wild, hissing as they sprinted out like a shot. I went to go investigate, but didn't notice anything amiss. I figured my cats had just knocked something
over and had gotten freaked out, so I walked back to my room. As I plopped back onto my bed, I happened to glance out the window. That's when I
saw the ladder in my backyard, leading up to my parents' bedroom. To cut a long story short, my house was broken into by a burglar who wanted my
mother's jewelry. Thankfully, nobody was hurt and nothing of incredible importance was taken; the burglar was in and out in a matter of seconds, and
actually ended up dropping most of his loot in the yard during his hasty escape. Not to mention, the guy was actually caught a few months later, while
trying to pawn off what he did get. Little did I realize, however, that this burglar had actually taken something that would change my family's life
forever. About three nights after the incident, my mom started waking up early. First at seven, then at six, then at five... She thought nothing of it:

Theory of Homeopathy Essay
Theory of Homeopathy
Abstract
A large portion of the United States population believes that alternative approaches to health care are less evasive and more effective than so–called
Western medicine. This report looks at the efficacy of homeopathy. As this therapy moves into the mainstream there is a need for doctors and nurses to
understand its benefits and possible adverse effects.
Theory of Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a type of medical treatment that is based on the theory of treating certain diseases with very small doses of drugs that, in a healthy
person and in large doses, would produce symptoms like those of the disease (Webster, 1982). From the transcripts of "Talk of the Nation" (National
Public Radio), the question ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Homeopathy closes the distance between healer and patient. A gap that some argue mainstreammedicine not only created but continues to widen with
it's tendency towards coldness and indifference to it's patients.
Homeopathic is effective for a wide range of ailments such as colds, flu, arthritis, allergies, and sprains to name just a few of the maladies for which
there are homeopathic treatments for. But even homeopathy's most devoted supporters can not explain why it works, only that it does work. Critics of
the homeopathic methods argue that the fundamental ideas behind homeopathy defy the laws of chemistry and physics and that it's theory makes no
sense in the scientific world. (Langman, 1997). They also claim that homeopathic 'cures' are due to the so–called placebo effect; that the patients and
professionals of homeopathy believe so strongly in their treatment that their belief system is actually the cure, not the homeopathic method used.
(Langman, 1997). Homeopathy's newfound success also dismays many physicians, scientists and consumer advocates who regard the homeopathic
formulas as ineffective, at best, and dangerous, at worst. They're especially concerned that by attempting to cure their ills with the homeopathic
method, patients will not seek assistance from established treatments for very serious, perhaps life

Informative Essay On Homeopathy
Many people today tend to be scared of any medical treatments that don't fall under western medical practices, they tend to shy away and are too scared

is a plant, mineral, or animal based treatment that doesn't contain harsh items like Formaldehyde like any types of western medicine practice which
increases a person's risk of having cancer, however, homeopathy treatments are safer and healthier for the body than any form of western medicine.

Reaction Paper On Homeopathy
Homeopathy can be understood as a natural form of medicine used by many people in the world to treat both severe and chronic conditions.
According to Dr Josh Axe (2016), homeopathy is an alternative healing practice that makes use of the least thinkable amount of an active ingredient in
order to help treat or cure an illness. Even, if this same ingredient can have an impact to an illness in the first place. Another way to put this concept:
"like cures like"!
History of homeopathy:
According to Dana Ulman (1991), Homeopathy became spectacularly popular in the United States and Europe in the 1800s and its strongest believers
included European royalty, American entrepreneurs, and religious leaders.
The creation of homeopathy dates back to Samuel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The laws of homeopathy initially developed by Hahnemann are still in use by homeopaths practicing around the world today. (Dr Axe: 2016)
Description of homeopathy:
Clear understanding to how homeopathy systems work:
Firstly a patient gets evaluated by a homeopathic practitioner to identify symptoms of the illness so that the practitioner can fit it with the right
treatment. The patient entire lifestyle, habits and backgrounds are taken into account when identifying the treatment. There is a very strong correlation
between emotional symptoms and how that might contribute to an illness. Example, homeopathy can take into consideration that lack of sleep can
contribute to digestive problems.
Many homeopathic treatments have names written in Latin (after their animal, mineral or plant source) and are assigned a number and percentage to
describe how strong the solution is. (Dr Axe: 2016).
There is an important distinction between strength and potency of a treatment in homeopathic medicine. A treatment is not always believed to be
stronger or better if it is more potent, since each person's reaction will be different to the

Taking any piece of information and analyzing it through critical thinking is a skill that I feel is necessary to be successful in any field of life.
Looking at any piece of information without bias, and purely to find facts is the key to making an accurate judgment.
I was surprised by the claim made by James Randi (2010) in video "Homeopathy, quackery and fraud" that Homeopathic medicine does not work.
Mr.Randi claims that since homeopathic sleeping pills do not work, it means none of the homeopathic medicine work. I see his claim as an example of

What Is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a natural healing method based on the principle of "like cures like." This means symptoms are treated with an extremely diluted dose
of whatever it is that might have caused the ailment in the first place. The doses of medicine are so diluted; there might not be any active elements of
the original solution remaining in the actual medicine when treating the person with the disorder.
This leads to the next point, that homeopathy works on the energetic level, not the physical level. Homeopathy treatments influence the energy system
of the patient (for want of a better word). The method impacts the whole person physically, emotionally, and mentally. It views a disorder as an
imbalance in a person's chi, or life force energy, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These have a number of active ingredients. Arnica cream is a popular example of this. It is used for treating muscle soreness and injuries.
Typically, homeopathic medicines are considered to be safe, have no side effects, and can be used in conjunction with mainstream treatments. Locating
a homeopathic provider is easier and easier with the growth of the alternative health community in the US in recent years. The remedies themselves can
easily be found at all health food type stores.
A couple of concerns about homeopathy can also be raised. Sometimes when using a homeopathic medicine, the symptoms can seem to get worse
before they get better. This has been attributed to the body recreating symptoms in reaction to receiving a treatment containing the elements that cause
the illness.
Also, there is no confirmed scientific proof that homeopathy actually works to cure people. This is a concern for the skeptics. Many studies conclude
that health benefits of homeopathy are due to the placebo effect. In other words, it's all in their heads and has nothing to do with medicine. Some will
then say this affirms the effectiveness of the treatment. It's supposed to work this way on the energetic

Lm potencies are known as a fast, gentle and long lasting cure. Homeopaths use lm potencies to treat hypersensitive patients mainly because they are
more gentle. Lm potencies speed up the cure of patients as well as lessen the aggravations. Hahnemann felt that centicimal potencies caused too much
of an aggravation which lead to a patient suffering. Lm potencies are made by diluting a remedy in a ratio of 1 to 50000 at each step, while still
succussing at 100. Due to the fast that the succussions are low, the aggravations will be low and because it is diluted so many times it increases the

Some say it's the remedy that matches the patients totality of symptoms for a chronic condition with emphasis on their personality and temperament.
Others say that it's the remedy that matches the patients individual type and it is a life long remedy and no matter what condition a person gets, this
remedy will cure the acute condition. Some say that the innate constitution is what the person is made of on a mental, emotional, and physical level,
but it is not necessarily the remedy that will cure the persons current condition.
Each constitution is associated with certain remedies. Each constitution has a typical chronic remedy, however a strong traumatic incident can impose a

Homeopathy helps to restore children to health, to overcome their weekness and to get them ready for a healthy ife. People who have taken

Homeopathy Pros And Cons
Homeopathy is a form of alternative medication that has been increasing in popularity in today's society. It is often substituted for conventional
medication14. Homeopathy was created in the seventeen hundreds when German doctor Samuel Hahnemann concluded that if a substance can induce
the symptoms of an illness in a healthy person, then it can treat those symptoms in an ill person. He first tested Cinchona bark, a treatment for malaria,
on himself and said to have experienced the symptoms of malaria. He also concluded that the medicine was more effective in a lower concentration
therefore he invented the process of succession to reduce the side effects of the medicine and to increase its ability to heal13.
1A common way in which Homeopathic medicine is made today is when plants or minerals are repeatedly diluted in alcohol or water. After this process
the solution is added to lactose tablets. Recent research of the hydrogen bonds in homeopathic medication has apparently shown that this form of
medication follows the 'water memory theory'. The water memory theory states that water can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

that match the antigens of a person's somatic cells. The cortisone in these various medications act as anti–inflammatories and functions to suppress the

Complementary and Alternative Medicine

below is a crash course on 5 different aspects of this unique and mind blowing complementary and alternative medicine: Origin and Historical Use,
Healing Philosophy and Mechanism, Biomedical Interpretations, Common Indications, and Associated Risks and Costs. All factors shall give one a

Origin and Historical Use. Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician and chemist, developed homeopathy in 1790. Originally, Hahnemann was a

He continued this experiment by taking small doses of substances that were thought to cure the disease followed by eventually, diluting substances such
as herbs, minerals and animal extracts in an alcohol–water solution (Synovitz & Larson, 2013, p. 128). In doing so Hahnemann discovered the more he
would dilute a substances, lessen the likelihood of side effects, boosting the potency of the drug which proved his principle of like cures like.
Hahnemann developed 3 essential principles of homeopathy in which still remain today: The principle of similar: like cures like, the principle of
infinitesimal dose: the more diluted the, dose the more potent its curative is, and the principle of specificity of the individual: if the remedy is to cure,
it must match its symptom profile of the patient (Synovitz & Larson, 2013, p. 128).
Healing Philosophy or Mechanism. The belief on health and illness of homeopathic medicine is if given to a well person, the substances are supposed
to cause illness, but given to a healthy individual, the substances are thought to cure illnesses (Synovitz & Larson, 2013, p. 129). The text book for this
course, Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Health Professions: A Holistic Approach to Consume Health, gives a great example and
clarification on the healing philosophy and mechanism of homeopathic remedies. It states, rather than treating a

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Homeopathy
4.0 Advantages and Disadvantages of Homeopathy and Western Medicine
Both Western medicine and homoeopathy have their own advantages that separates them from each other. The drugs used by western medicine doctors
make it difficult for the disease to spread and is a faster way of curing the patient (Mind Body Green, 2017). Westernmedicine has a higher efficacy
compared to homoeopathy, where more than half of the chronic and acute problems are cured successfully (Butter Nutrition, 2017). Furthermore, it is
developed from clinical trials, hence it is evidence–based medicine and reliable for patient treatment. The training received by professionals is also at a
higher standard, reducing the risk of accidents or complications (Australian Medical Association, 2017). On the other hand, homoeopathy can minimize
side effects and, it is gentle and safer for long–term use since there are fewer side effects due to the remedies being natural. Homeopathy actually builds
a person's immune system and makes that person highly resistant to many diseases (deliciousliving, 2017). It could be an alternative if mainstream
medicine fails to treat an illness where, the treatments are cheap and easy to dispense. This is why homoeopathy is famous in developing countries and
rural areas of Australia (The Australian Rural Doctor, 2017).
However, both methods of treatments also come with disadvantages. In western medicine drugs are used and the treatments are made out of chemicals
that can be harmful

1 2In 1985 an experiment was conducted with 60 subjects with a randomised placebo controlled trial. These patients were suffering from anxiety and
stress. Half of the patients were given a homeopathic formula marketed as L.72.2 while the control group was given Diazepam– a tranquilizing
medication of the benzodiazepine family that causes a calming outcome. The results indicated that L.72 was equally as positive as the Diazepam
medication as both groups experienced a relief of stress or anxiety.
Validity:
The source is a well conducted and logical experiment which explores the effects of homeopathy. The source's overall quality is good as its answers
and explores the topic it addresses. Although it is informative there was no use of citations and scientific language. This source was not peer reviewed
thus affecting its validity.
Reliability:
This source has not been repeated more than once. The amount of subjects was also small thus effecting the reliability of this experiment. These results
could have been a coincidence and repetition is therefore imperative. It was not double blinded and the scientists chose which group received which
medication. They also collected the information and thus can be considered biased. The absence of blinding contributes to its unreliability.
Usefulness:
This source is a primary source and therefore is first hand, unchanged information. It is useful as it explores the idea of placebo and its ability to heal
which contributes greatly to the rest of the research task.
Limitations:
Limitations within the experiment include the lack of double blinding which as mentioned above effect the sources credibility.
The participants were unaware of what they were taking. However, they agreed to do so therefore making the experiment ethical. No explanations
were given for the results obtained and why the medications were equally effective. The experiment was found on the website The Homeopathic
Coach and showed clear signs of a lack of peer review. This contributes to the experiment being unreliable.

Alternative Health Care Essays
Alternative Health Care
Alternative health cares, also known as holistic or homeopathic care, are countless ways of unconventional health care approaches to healing and
improving illnesses. Dr. Samuel Hahnemann discovered homeopathy in the early 1800's. He was sick of the art of medicine practiced in his time; he
said it was barbaric. He knew there had to be alternatives so, like any devoted science lover would do, he experimented on himself and his friends.
Hahnemann found that large dosages of herbs increased symptoms so he decreased the dosage and found that the symptoms decreased and usually
ceased (Smith 10). Homeopathy became popular in the nineteenth century. This may be accounted for because most patients at that time... Show more

When someone chooses alternative care he must take into consideration its dangers. One could actually overdose on vitamins or misuse herbal
therapies. "Instead of feeling better, I felt increasingly worse, like a spaced out zombie" complained Carol Copeland, a former holistic patient who
almost lost her life to cancer because her homeopathic physicians were too proud to think they were wrong thus they neglected an ovarian cyst
(Copeland 104 & Wekesser 95). Another problem with these unconventional health care alternatives is that they give false relief. What this means is
that when someone uses a holistic remedy and then feels relief he tends to credit the remedy. This method does not hold water because most ailments
resolve themselves (headache for example). Nevertheless, holistic medicine has strengths. One, it recognizes the psychological, environmental and
social aspects of illness. Two, it involves the patient in his own treatment with activities etc... And three, it emphasizes preventive medicine as its base
(holistic). Holistic medicine is a practice of health cares that that emphasizes treatment of the entire patient's body, mind and spirit. Homeopathic care,
compared to allopathic is expensive. There are no doctor's visits or expensive antibiotic prescriptions necessary. This is not to say that doctors are not
useful; obviously, if there were a serious injury one should not hesitate to go to a medical (allopathic) doctor (Smith

The Principles Of Herbalism/Phytotherapy And Naturopathy
QUESTION 1
Explain the principles of Herbalism/phytotherapy and Naturopathy and compare them (similarities and differences), with Homoeopathic principles.
Herbalism or phytotherapy has many definitions but in essence is the interaction between humans and the plant kingdom (Hoffmann, 2003).
Herbalism is based on three principles: 1. The correlation of the herb to the disease or disease picture, 2. The harmony the herb has to an organ
system, and 3. The ability of the herb to assist healing in the body (Wood, 2018). Herbalism contains many different branches of which there is

Mattson (2008) explains that "Hormesis is a term used by toxicologists to refer to a biphasic dose–response to an environmental agent characterized by
a low dose stimulation or beneficial effect and a high dose inhibitory or toxic effect. In the fields of biology and medicine hormesis is defined as an
adaptive response of cells and organisms to a moderate (usually intermittent) stress."
The Arndt–Schultz law was named after Hugo Paul Friedrich Schultz and Rudolf Arndt in 1888. It has since been replaced with the term 'Hormesis"
to fully explain the principle thereof. The basis of the theory or law is that a low dose of medication or remedy will stimulate cellular activity for
healing, a medium dose will inhibit activity and a high dose will stop all cellular activity. This is in accordance with the rule of a single dose and
minimal dose to encourage healing as put out in the Organon of Hahnemann (Hahnemann, Boericke and Dudgeon,

Informative Speech On Homeopathy
Have you ever heard of homeopathy? You probably have, but have no idea what it really is. Homeopathy is a system of medicine that treats an illness
or condition with highly diluted concentrations of natural ingredients that mimic the symptoms of the condition being treated. It seems like an odd
premise, but in spite of the unusual mechanism behind it, it is a very effective method for treating disease. How do you cure someone of an illness by
giving that person a tiny concentration of something that actually causes the illness? According to proponents of the science, homeopathy not only
works, but works better than conventional medicine. They say that somewhere along the line the pharmaceutical industry got involved in medicine, at
which point natural remedies were abandoned in favor of chemical formulations.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The easiest way to to find out if a product you are interested in is homeopathic is to read the label on the back and take a look at the ingredients. In
homeopathy, all of the ingredients are diluted, so each ingredient in a homeopathic product has the letter X or C after it. So, if one of the ingredients is
Zinc 20X, that means the product contains Zinc that has been diluted 20 times. One of the most popular cold medicines on the market, Zicam, is
actually a homeopathic remedy that consists of nothing more than homeopathic zinc in a nasal gel. Most people that use Zicam do not even realize that
it is a homeopathic product. There are homeopathic remedies available for almost any condition you can think of. Cold, flu, allergy, even bedwetting;
there is a homeopathic remedy available for almost every condition. Homeopathy is universally recognized as being safe because the ingredients are

Why Is Homeopathy Utilizable
Is Homeopathy Utilizable
Cause of an illness does not depend on one factor; for example, carrying a certain microbe in body. In fact, many other elements such as one's lifestyle,
temperament, and state of mind must be considered. On the other hand, conventional medicine treats patients by prescribing the same medicine to
people who have the same illness. At this point, Homeopathy stands as a supplementary and an alternative treatment, since it depends on the idea of the
mind's and the body's strong connection, which asserts the importance of understanding of the person's constitution and character in healing process.
Homeopathy starts with the principle "the like cures like" which is developed in 5th century BC by Hippocrates. Today, this principle stands as the
main fundamental of treatment in homeopathy. Between 1st and 5th century AD Romans developed the medicines,... Show more content on

Introduction
Allopathy
1.Allopathic medicine is an expression commonly used by homeopaths and proponents of other forms of alternative medicine to refer to mainstream
medical use of pharmacologically active agents or physical interventions to treat or suppress symptoms or pathophysiologic processes of diseases or
conditions. The expression was coined in 1810 by the creator of homeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann (1755–1843). In such circles, the expression
"allopathic medicine" is still used to refer to "the broad category of medical practice that is sometimes called Western medicine, biomedicine,
evidence–based medicine, or modern medicine" (see the article on scientific medicine).

A Description Of Homeopathy
Homeopathy can be understood as a natural form of medicine used by many people in the world to treat both severe and chronic conditions. According
to Dr Josh Axe (2016), homeopathy is an alternative healing practice that makes use of the least thinkable amount of an effective ingredient in order to
help treat an illness. Even though, this same element can have an impact on an illness in the first place. An alternative way to put this concept: like
cures like.
History of homeopathy:
According to Dana Ulman (1991), Homeopathy became very well known in the Europe and United States back in the early 1800s and some of the
strongest believers included European royalty, entrepreneurs, and leaders in religious environment.
The creation of homeopathy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Dr Axe (2016), the laws of homeopathy initially developed by Hahnemann are still in use by homeopaths practicing around the world
currently.
Many homeopathic treatments have names written in Latin after their animal, mineral or plant source and are assigned a number and percentage to
describe how strong the solution is. (Dr Axe: 2016).
There is a distinction between strength and potency of a treatment in homeopathic medicine. A treatment is not always believed to be stronger or better
if it is more potent, since each individual's reaction is different to the

He was able to conclude that vaccine therapy had more in common with homeopathy than with allopathic medicine. Dr. Bach searched and found that

The Powerful Placebo: From Ancient Priest To Modern Physician
The history of the placebo
The placebo, though unknown at the time, has been a fundamental part of medicine since antiquity. Simply put by Shapiro and Shapiro (who are
considered influential writers in placebo research), "the history of the placebo is the history of medical practice itself, until modern times". (Shapiro &
Shapiro, 1997) In their book, 'The Powerful Placebo: From Ancient Priest to Modern Physician', there is an extensive list of ancient medicine
medicaments and procedures all of which would now be deemed bizarre and inexplicable. For example, medicines included parts of frogs and
scorpions, the flesh of vipers and grated skull. It must be remembered that the eccentricity of these treatments is accounted for by the lack of ... Show

This is the phenomenon known as the placebo effect. (Benedetti, 2009)
However, it has only been in the last century, due to the rise of evidence–based medicine, that we have identified the placebo.
What is the placebo and the placebo effect?
The definition of the placebo and placebo effect is disputed but according to Shapiro and Morris, who wrote an extensive dissertation on the placebo:
"A placebo is defined as any therapy or component of therapy used for its nonspecific, psychological, or psychophysiological effect, or that it is used
for its presumed specific effect, but is without specific activity for the condition being treated." (Shapiro & Morris, 1978) "A placebo effect is defined
as the psychological or psychophysiological effect produced by placebos." (Shapiro & Morris, 1978)
Shapiro and Morris' definition is widely accepted and quoted, to words of similar effect, in other journals and books (for example 'Placebo
interventions, placebo effects and clinical practice'). Shapiro & Morris then differentiate pure placebos which they describe as 'treatments that are
devoid of active, specific components' from impure placebos, which 'contain non–placebo components'. A profound definition would be as follows,
"Impure placebos are substances, interventions or 'therapeutic' methods which have known pharmacological, clinical or physical value for some
ailments but lack specific therapeutic effects or value for the condition for which they have been

Dr. George Albert Wrong Case
Description of the Issue
In Re Guess case, the Board of Medical Practitioners concluded that Dr George Albert Guess could not practice homeopathy, an alternative medical
treatment, because this practice did not comply with the standards set by North Carolina's medical professionals. As a result, he was restricted from
administering this treatment to patients and would not be able to practice medicine if he failed to comply. However, medical standards are set in place to
protect the patient from outcomes they are not aware of. Thus, restricting physicians from practicing homeopathic medical treatment does not interfere
with patient's rights. Instead it ensures that patients are protected so that they can fully exercise their rights.
Rights of a Patient
The physician–patient relationship has greatly evolved in the twenty–first century when compared to previous centuries in which the Hippocratic Oath
and not patient's rights was the forerunner of the medical system. The shift to a balanced physician–patient relationship has entailed more rights for
patients, such as less abortion restrictions and physician–assisted suicide. As patients obtained more medical rights, individuals explored more
nontraditional medical practices as a way to heal. As a result, alternative medicine gained a lot of traction. However, homeopathy, a prominent
alternative medicine treatment, has received a great amount of resistance. Within this practice doctors believe the use of "large doses of a

Hypertension : High Blood Pressure
Hypertension is unusually high blood pressure that affects nearly 600 million people around the world. So many people are affected because
hypertension rarely shows any symptoms while damaging the eyes, brain, heart, and kidneys. There is no known cure for hypertension although it
causes five million premature deaths per year. One of the most effective hypertension treatments ishomeopathy, a branch of alternative medicine based
on the idea that the body has the ability to heal itself. There is evidence to show that homeopathic medication has helpful effects and can help treat
hypertension.
Blood pressure is the pressure of blood flowing in the walls of the blood vessels. It is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHG) and written with
the systolic number over the diastolic number. A normal blood pressure is lower than 120/80 mm HG. Something higher than 120/80 mmHG means
the patient has high blood pressure. Hypertension can be caused by factors such as unhealthy eating, excess intake of salt or alcohol, being overweight,
not exercising enough, or genetic makeup. Blood pressure can increase when the physical and emotional aspects of a person are affected by stress.
When blood pressure is raised, it can put a force on the heart and the heart may not beat normally. Therefore, it is important to start and maintain a
healthy lifestyle. High blood pressure is a silent killer because it affects people without them noticing so it is important to get it measured. Hypertension

Benefits of the Placebo Effect
What if there was a new drug that's making you high, but is just a sugar pill? What if you can get drunk with non–alcoholic drinks? What if there was a
pill that can cure all your physical and emotional problems? This is known as the placebo effect. The placebo effect is a phenomenon in which some
people experience a type of benefit after the use of a placebo. A placebo is any substance with no known medical effects; such as sterile water, saline
solution, or a sugar pill. (About.com Psychology) Although it doesn't have known effects, people exposed to the placebo effect often gets the effect on
what it's supposed to do.
A placebo is a substance or other kind of treatment that looks like a regular treatment or medicine, but it is really not. It is actually a treatment or
substance that is inactive; this means that it is not a real medicine. The person who is getting a placebo does not know that the treatment is not real.
Sometimes the placebo is in the form of a "sugar pill," but a placebo can also be an injection, a liquid, a procedure, or any other type of therapy that
doesn't directly affect the illness being treated. Even though placebos do not act directly on the disease, it affects about 30% of people who
experienced it.(Tulsa Brain Tumor Clinic.) People taking placebos have experienced reduced pain, healed ulcers, eased nausea, and many other
illnesses.(ScienceDaily.) As many people suggest, the placebo is actually an expectancy effect; when people already know what

Principle Of Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a form of alternative and complementary medicine which was developed in the late 1800s, by a German orthodox physicist, Dr. Samuel
Hahnemann (1755–1843). It is based on the principle of "like cures like".
This is an idea that is claimed widely by many homeopaths to have already been established by Hippocrates (460–377BC) and merely expanded upon
by Hahnemann. However, there are also many who consider this to be untrue.
Homeopathy was developed during the Industrial Revolution, a period encompassing vast technological, economic and social changes. Many people
belonging to the lower class were forced to live in poor living conditions and there developed an increased need for hospital, doctors and medication.
However, blood–letting, purging and giving patients large doses of toxic materials such as arsenic and lead were commonplace methods employed by
many conventional doctors during this time. Hahnemann disagreed with these harsh methods and began to develop the intricate system of homeopathy
to provide medical care for even those of the lower class.

Homeopathic Medicine Is Pseudoscience
Why Homeopathic Medicine is pseudoscience.
Homeopathic Medicine is a waste of time and money. This essay will be about how Homeopathic Medicine is a pseudoscience and does not work. The
three points I will be making are: homeopathy is outdated, homeopathic medicine is water, homeopathic medicine are placebos at best.
Homeopathy is an outdated method of medicine proposed in the year 1796. It was said to spiritually and physically heal you of any ailments. The
claim of it spiritually healing you should be enough to call it pseudo. The medicine is created by mixing a substance into water. The concept of it
was like cures like. For example an onion would be used as a substance to cure irritated eyes or runny nose and poison ivy would be ... Show more

In Homeopathy the more you dilute the substance in water the stronger it becomes. A common Homeopathic medicine has the dilution 30c which
basically means 1 part medicine to 100 to the power of 30 parts water. This an extremely small amount. Most Homeopaths realize this and say that
there isn't a signal drop of substance in the water.
Homeopathic Medicine are just placebos at best. In 2013 the NHMRC(National Health and Medical Research Council) did a review of Homeopathy.
They examined 68 medical conditions and out of those 7 had no good evidence for either side and 61 had no evidence of improvement with
Homeopathy. Also a few years before that the UK House of Commons Science and Technology Committee did there own report basically concluding
that it is a placebo.
"In our view, the systematic reviews and meta–analyses conclusively demonstrate that homeopathic products perform no better than placebos. The
Government shares our interpretation of the evidence. We asked the Minister, Mike O'Brien, whether the Government had any credible evidence that
homeopathy works beyond the placebo effect and he responded: "the straight answer is no"."– UK House of Commons Science and Technology

The practice of conventional medicine is regulated by special laws that ensure that practitioners are properly qualified, and keep to certain standards or
codes of practice.
Regulation of complementary and alternative medicine
Currently, practitioners of two complementary and alternative medicines are regulated in the same way as practitioners of conventional medicine. They
are osteopathy and chiropractic. This regulation is called statutory professional regulation.
This regulation makes sure that registered practitioners of osteopathy and chiropractic are properly qualified and that they practise in a way that is safe
and ethical, following the standards and codes set by their professional regulators.
A regulation exists to protect a patient's safety – on its own it doesn't mean that there is scientific evidence that a treatment is effective.
Unregulated complementary and alternative medicines
In the UK there is currently no statutory professional regulation of any other complementary and alternative medicine practitioners.
This means, for example that anyone in the UK can legally call themselves a homeopath

Holism In Medicine
In the western healing arts, vitalism is a holistic approach intended for the prevention and treatment of disease by promoting one's vital force.
Therefore, Di Stefano describes the vital force as a 'coherent life force that regulates and governs the growth, repair and regeneration of the body and
its diverse systems, it has also been described as the spirit of life, or spiritus vitae' (Di Stefano, 2006, pp. 107). Similar to 'chi' in Chinese medicine or
'prana' in Ayurveda, the vital force acts as a defense against disease and is often referred to as a medium that connects us with the rest of the world and
universe. Contrastingly, the concept of holism aims to treat the vital force in a holistic manner, by treating all aspects of the individual,... Show more

Hippocrates put forth the idea that the doctor could aid the 'physis' through patient means such as nutrition and the removal of toxins from the body.
Seven centuries later, the philosophy of vitalism was modified by Galen. He was focused in finding correlations and solutions for natural phenomena
in the organism. Moreover, Galen proposed the concept of the 'pneuma' or spirit, detailing three different spirits that were inside all humans: the vital,
animal and natural spirits (Wood, 2005). Interestingly enough, these were the perspectives of vitalism at the time Paracelsus began to enter the
medical field. Therefore, Paracelsus had a much different view of the vital force, 'he saw vitalism as an active, directing intelligence, which conserved
and restored the organism in an active fashion' (Wood, 2005, pp. 14–15). Paracelsus' notion of vitalism exerted a significant influence in the evolution
of medicine, including Van Helmont's alchemical medicine, Hahnemann'shomeopathy, eclecticism and Thomsonian herbalism. Furthermore, we can
see throughout history how the concept of vitalism has evolved, but it is still maintained around the fundamental principle as the force that drives us,

Alternative Medicine An Acceptable Treatment Option?
Alternative medicine is used all around the world in various forms. Some applications are acupuncture, salt treatments, reiki, aromatherapy, and magnet
therapy. These treatments can be used for various ailments such as: chronic pain management, illnesses, stress relievers, respiratory problems, and skin
conditions. As a pre–med student I am curious why these medicine alternatives are used as treatment methods. Although some of these alternative
treatments have been used for thousands of years, how do we know for certain they are effective? Is alternative medicine an acceptable treatment
option?
The Oxford Dictionary defines alternative medicine as any of a range of medical therapies that are not regarded as orthodox by the medical profession.
To truly understand the modern usage of alternative medicine in the United States, however, I feel it would be best to look back at where the fad
started. According to the Atlantic, alternative medicine started to become popular in the 1990s. An article in 1993 in The New England Journal of
Medicine stated that one in three Americans were using some form of unconventional therapy or alternative medicine (Gritz). Enough Americans had
interest that Congress established an office just for alternative medicine within the National Institutes of Health (Gritz). Today, Alternative medicine is
very popular in the United States and is used by millions. The 2007 National Health interview showed that in the last twelve months before the survey

Diagnostic purity bias
In this study there were several selection criteria which may have ruled out a certain population from participating. The inclusion criteria stated that the
participant must have at least moderate pain on movement, additionally if NSAIDs or analgesic treatments were previously undertaken additional
criteria needed to be met. The study also ruled out subjects with severe OA requiring surgery, subjects with skin affections on the treated knee, and
subjects with additional joint diseases. The external validity of the study may be reduced, due to the selection criteria being exclusive to a significant
number of the population of interest.
To limit the diagnostic purity bias the exclusion criteria should be more open, this would lead to greater representation of the wider population rather
than specific group of people.

During this study the subjects were given a gel and instructed to apply it three times daily to the affected knee. At the end of the study pain on walking

Dr. Royal Copeland, A Doctor Served As Health Commissioner...
Dr. Royal Copeland, a homeopathic doctor served as Health Commissioner of New York City from 1918 to 1923. He was later voted to the U.S.
Senate and in 1938 where he sponsored the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act that integrated homeopathic medicines into federal law. Aside from
herbs and supplements, which are known as food and cannot be promoted for the aversion or treatment of particular sicknesses, homeopathic
prescriptions are medications that can be advertised for particular conditions. A homeopathic medication can be sold to the community providing that
the affliction for which it is guaranteed to treat has an OTC sign (an illness which is self–limiting) and does not require medical monitoring or a
medicinal diagnosis. Due to these features, it is unlawful for homeopathic medicine or any other OTC medication to be promoted for genuine medical
conditions, like multiple sclerosis, coronary illness, diabetes, or likewise dangerous conditions. Though these conditions are not self–limiting, there are
different conditions that are self–limiting that require a diagnosis from a doctor. This, therefore, takes us to the most shared concerns people present
about how homeopathic medicines are manufactured and of their safety. The raw materials used for various homeopathic medicines are known
poisons. Samuel Hahnemann's goal was to search for a means to treat patients less severely than the treatments used in his day, which often involved

The Pros And Cons Of Homeopathic Treatment

  • 1. The Pros And Cons Of Homeopathic Treatment Even Samuel Hahnemann, the father of homeopathic treatment, took up cudgels against the allopathic way of treatment where the worst thing, he claimed, was that one kind made another necessary. He was of the firm conviction that that allopathic treated a patient with medicines and formulae which, while curing one chronic illness, brought about another which was dissimilar to the one which had just been treated. He was a firm believer of nature's cure which never planted another illness in the patient while curing the one. The word homeopathy derives from two Greek words 'homo,' meaning 'similar,' and pathos, meaning 'suffering.' Homeopathic treatments are generally using dilutions of natural substances from plants, minerals, and animals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That is why a patient is aware of the fact that homeopathic treatment takes time and patience. For chronic health problem, one should be prepared to commit longer time – like 6 months or so – to get desired result. Typically, a homeopathic doctor prescribes changes in diet and in lifestyle as part of the plan. If you cannot commit to time and discipline, you should consider other form of medical treatment. Homeopath can cure mental and emotional stress. Homeopathic remedies target to influence the state of mind, relieve motions and bring harmonious state of health. Thus Homeopathy treatment demonstrates the possibility of higher goal of medicine. It is a therapy for the person as a whole rather than for the disease alone. Homeopathic doctors believe in the holistic medical model, which states that an illness is specific to the individual, very subjective. Homeopathy treatment not only cures the presenting symptoms but also reestablishes internal order at the deeper levels and thereby provides a long lasting cure. Especially if applied at the onset of the disease, Homeopathy treatment is of great value in reversing and recovering diseases, such as diabetes, arthritis, epilepsy, bronchial asthma, skin eruptions, allergic conditions, and mental or emotional ... • 2. Two complementary therapies Two complementary therapies Acupuncture – this technique is also considered to be a complimentary therapy. Acupuncture is a type of an ancient Chinese medicine that has been practiced for thousands of years by the Chinese. This technique is basically where you inject refined needles that have been sterile into the patient's body. Practitioners use this method to master a bunch of both medical and health conditions like depression, arthritis and tendonitis and much more. It is commonly used to treat conditions that have something to do with pain like headaches and chronic back pains. There are some advantages that come with acupuncture. Advantages: Acupuncture gives relief to the patient from bodily and psychological sickness. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Patient teaching is an essential part of the healing procedure. Deliberately knowing how to diet, exercise and sleep can have an impression on the patient's physical and mental health and this is a vital tool to uphold one's health and vitality. People used to believe that acupuncture works by conserving and balancing the movement of Qi in the person's body. Qi is basically an idea that is hard to interpret it to other people who do not have much of a grasp on it. It is usually associated with vital energy and has also been included with different western traditions of philosophy. The idea of Qi is a lot more complicated. But it intersects both living and non–living objects in nature and universe. The effectiveness of acupuncture: Overall, I think that acupuncture indulges in a prime role of acupuncturist in finding out to what degree the patients are involved in acupuncture medications and how to carry out the process of putting in the needles around specific areas in the patient's body correctly. There has been an argument that this technique spreads further than needling with various therapist–associated that is not specific to the issues being essential to the therapy which can also possibly affect the results. The main role of the people who practices acupuncture in acupuncture medication explains this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Effect Of Placebos And Their Effect On The Brain And Body Introduction Henry Beecher (1904–1976) was a physician who treated wounded soldiers in America during World War II. When he ran out of pain –killing morphine, he decided not to tell the wounded soldiers. Instead he kept telling them that he was giving them morphine, while he was actually giving a saline. Surprisingly, almost 40 percent of the wouded soldiers that were given the saline said their pain was actually reduced by the treatment. Breecher had discovered what is called the placebo effect. (Beecher, 1955) Currently we have more knowledge on placebos and their effect, as placebos are getting more important in medicine. In this essay the main question is: What is the effect of a placebo on the brain and body? The placebo effect is very important, because it shows how important perception is and what the role of the brain is in physical health. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A placebo, also called dummy pill, is a simulated or otherwise medically ineffectual treatment for a disease or other medical condition. It could be a pill, a shot, pharmacological therapy, or some other type of treatment. The thing all placebos have in common is that they do not contain an active drug ingredient. Sometimes patients given a placebo treatment will have a perceived or actual improvement in a medical condition. This phenomenon is commonly called the placebo effect or placebo response. The placebo effect occurs with both real and fake medicins, because of the expectation of a patient that receives the treatment. The expectations of a patient can also be negative. • 4. Argumentative Essay On Homeopathy Homoeopathy is a modality that is commonly used by naturopaths. It is one of the most controversial therapies in the world and is highly critiqued by the medical profession. This essay will critically evaluate the controversy surrounding this modality as well as give reasons why clinical trials do not support it. Suggestions regarding actions that can be taken to foster a more collaborative model of practice between homoeopaths and other medical professions will be discussed as well as an assertion on the value of homoeopathy in naturopathic practice. Many conventional practitioners find homeopathy implausible due to several key concepts not being consistent with fundamental concepts of science. • 7. Personal Narrative : A Short Story Saturday, November 15, 2014. By all accounts, it was a day like any other. The sun rose and set between the barren branches of the trees as my family and I took shelter from the cold. That night, my father, mother, and brother were watching curling downstairs as I nestled in the dark of my room, listening to music through my headphones. At one point, there was a loud crash from the next room over – my parents' bedroom – and my cats went wild, hissing as they sprinted out like a shot. I went to go investigate, but didn't notice anything amiss. I figured my cats had just knocked something over and had gotten freaked out, so I walked back to my room. As I plopped back onto my bed, I happened to glance out the window. That's when I saw the ladder in my backyard, leading up to my parents' bedroom. To cut a long story short, my house was broken into by a burglar who wanted my mother's jewelry. Thankfully, nobody was hurt and nothing of incredible importance was taken; the burglar was in and out in a matter of seconds, and actually ended up dropping most of his loot in the yard during his hasty escape. Not to mention, the guy was actually caught a few months later, while trying to pawn off what he did get. Little did I realize, however, that this burglar had actually taken something that would change my family's life forever. About three nights after the incident, my mom started waking up early. • 8. Theory of Homeopathy Essay Theory of Homeopathy Abstract A large portion of the United States population believes that alternative approaches to health care are less evasive and more effective than so–called Western medicine. This report looks at the efficacy of homeopathy. As this therapy moves into the mainstream there is a need for doctors and nurses to understand its benefits and possible adverse effects. Theory of Homeopathy Homeopathy is a type of medical treatment that is based on the theory of treating certain diseases with very small doses of drugs that, in a healthy person and in large doses, would produce symptoms like those of the disease (Webster, 1982). From the transcripts of "Talk of the Nation" (National Public Radio), the question ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Homeopathy closes the distance between healer and patient. A gap that some argue mainstreammedicine not only created but continues to widen with it's tendency towards coldness and indifference to it's patients. Homeopathic is effective for a wide range of ailments such as colds, flu, arthritis, allergies, and sprains to name just a few of the maladies for which there are homeopathic treatments for. But even homeopathy's most devoted supporters can not explain why it works, only that it does work. Critics of the homeopathic methods argue that the fundamental ideas behind homeopathy defy the laws of chemistry and physics and that it's theory makes no sense in the scientific world. (Langman, 1997). They also claim that homeopathic 'cures' are due to the so–called placebo effect; that the patients and professionals of homeopathy believe so strongly in their treatment that their belief system is actually the cure, not the homeopathic method used. (Langman, 1997). Homeopathy's newfound success also dismays many physicians, scientists and consumer advocates who regard the homeopathic formulas as ineffective, at best, and dangerous, at worst. They're especially concerned that by attempting to cure their ills with the homeopathic method, patients will not seek assistance from established treatments for very serious, perhaps life ... • 9. Informative Essay On Homeopathy Many people today tend to be scared of any medical treatments that don't fall under western medical practices, they tend to shy away and are too scared to try any form of alternative medicine treatment which, means that a lot of people are missing out on homeopathy's life changing effects. Homeopathy is a plant, mineral, or animal based treatment that doesn't contain harsh items like Formaldehyde like any types of western medicine practice which increases a person's risk of having cancer, however, homeopathy treatments are safer and healthier for the body than any form of western medicine. • 12. What Is Homeopathy? Homeopathy is a natural healing method based on the principle of "like cures like." This means symptoms are treated with an extremely diluted dose of whatever it is that might have caused the ailment in the first place. The doses of medicine are so diluted; there might not be any active elements of the original solution remaining in the actual medicine when treating the person with the disorder. This leads to the next point, that homeopathy works on the energetic level, not the physical level. Homeopathy treatments influence the energy system of the patient (for want of a better word). The method impacts the whole person physically, emotionally, and mentally. It views a disorder as an imbalance in a person's chi, or life force energy, and ... Locating a homeopathic provider is easier and easier with the growth of the alternative health community in the US in recent years. The remedies themselves can easily be found at all health food type stores. A couple of concerns about homeopathy can also be raised. Sometimes when using a homeopathic medicine, the symptoms can seem to get worse before they get better. This has been attributed to the body recreating symptoms in reaction to receiving a treatment containing the elements that cause the illness. Also, there is no confirmed scientific proof that homeopathy actually works to cure people. This is a concern for the skeptics. • 14. Homeopathy Pros And Cons Homeopathy is a form of alternative medication that has been increasing in popularity in today's society. It is often substituted for conventional medication14. Homeopathy was created in the seventeen hundreds when German doctor Samuel Hahnemann concluded that if a substance can induce the symptoms of an illness in a healthy person, then it can treat those symptoms in an ill person. He first tested Cinchona bark, a treatment for malaria, on himself and said to have experienced the symptoms of malaria. He also concluded that the medicine was more effective in a lower concentration therefore he invented the process of succession to reduce the side effects of the medicine and to increase its ability to heal13. 1A common way in which Homeopathic medicine is made today is when plants or minerals are repeatedly diluted in alcohol or water. After this process the solution is added to lactose tablets. Recent research of the hydrogen bonds in homeopathic medication has apparently shown that this form of medication follows the 'water memory theory'. The water memory theory states that water can ... He continued this experiment by taking small doses of substances that were thought to cure the disease followed by eventually, diluting substances such as herbs, minerals and animal extracts in an alcohol–water solution (Synovitz & Larson, 2013, p. 128). In doing so Hahnemann discovered the more he would dilute a substances, lessen the likelihood of side effects, boosting the potency of the drug which proved his principle of like cures like. Hahnemann developed 3 essential principles of homeopathy in which still remain today: The principle of similar: like cures like, the principle of infinitesimal dose: the more diluted the, dose the more potent its curative is, and the principle of specificity of the individual: if the remedy is to cure, it must match its symptom profile of the patient (Synovitz & Larson, 2013, p. 128). Healing Philosophy or Mechanism. The belief on health and illness of homeopathic medicine is if given to a well person, the substances are supposed to cause illness, but given to a healthy individual, the substances are thought to cure illnesses (Synovitz & Larson, 2013, p. 129). • 16. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Homeopathy 4.0 Advantages and Disadvantages of Homeopathy and Western Medicine Both Western medicine and homoeopathy have their own advantages that separates them from each other. The drugs used by western medicine doctors make it difficult for the disease to spread and is a faster way of curing the patient (Mind Body Green, 2017). Westernmedicine has a higher efficacy compared to homoeopathy, where more than half of the chronic and acute problems are cured successfully (Butter Nutrition, 2017). Furthermore, it is developed from clinical trials, hence it is evidence–based medicine and reliable for patient treatment. The training received by professionals is also at a higher standard, reducing the risk of accidents or complications (Australian Medical Association, 2017). On the other hand, homoeopathy can minimize side effects and, it is gentle and safer for long–term use since there are fewer side effects due to the remedies being natural. Homeopathy actually builds a person's immune system and makes that person highly resistant to many diseases (deliciousliving, 2017). It could be an alternative if mainstream medicine fails to treat an illness where, the treatments are cheap and easy to dispense. This is why homoeopathy is famous in developing countries and rural areas of Australia (The Australian Rural Doctor, 2017). However, both methods of treatments also come with disadvantages. In western medicine drugs are used and the treatments are made out of chemicals that can be harmful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. Placebo Literature Review Literature Reviews 1 2In 1985 an experiment was conducted with 60 subjects with a randomised placebo controlled trial. These patients were suffering from anxiety and stress. Half of the patients were given a homeopathic formula marketed as L.72.2 while the control group was given Diazepam– a tranquilizing medication of the benzodiazepine family that causes a calming outcome. The results indicated that L.72 was equally as positive as the Diazepam medication as both groups experienced a relief of stress or anxiety. Validity: The source is a well conducted and logical experiment which explores the effects of homeopathy. The source's overall quality is good as its answers and explores the topic it addresses. Although it is informative there was no use of citations and scientific language. This source was not peer reviewed thus affecting its validity. Reliability: This source has not been repeated more than once. The amount of subjects was also small thus effecting the reliability of this experiment. These results could have been a coincidence and repetition is therefore imperative. It was not double blinded and the scientists chose which group received which medication. They also collected the information and thus can be considered biased. The absence of blinding contributes to its unreliability. Usefulness: This source is a primary source and therefore is first hand, unchanged information. It is useful as it explores the idea of placebo and its ability to heal which contributes greatly to the rest of the research task. Limitations: Limitations within the experiment include the lack of double blinding which as mentioned above effect the sources credibility. The participants were unaware of what they were taking. However, they agreed to do so therefore making the experiment ethical. No explanations were given for the results obtained and why the medications were equally effective. The experiment was found on the website The Homeopathic Coach and showed clear signs of a lack of peer review. This contributes to the experiment being unreliable.

Alternative Health Care Essays Alternative Health Care Alternative health cares, also known as holistic or homeopathic care, are countless ways of unconventional health care approaches to healing and improving illnesses. Dr. Samuel Hahnemann discovered homeopathy in the early 1800's. He was sick of the art of medicine practiced in his time; he said it was barbaric. He knew there had to be alternatives so, like any devoted science lover would do, he experimented on himself and his friends. Hahnemann found that large dosages of herbs increased symptoms so he decreased the dosage and found that the symptoms decreased and usually ceased (Smith 10). Homeopathy became popular in the nineteenth century. This may be accounted for because most patients at that time... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When someone chooses alternative care he must take into consideration its dangers. One could actually overdose on vitamins or misuse herbal therapies. "Instead of feeling better, I felt increasingly worse, like a spaced out zombie" complained Carol Copeland, a former holistic patient who almost lost her life to cancer because her homeopathic physicians were too proud to think they were wrong thus they neglected an ovarian cyst (Copeland 104 & Wekesser 95). Another problem with these unconventional health care alternatives is that they give false relief. What this means is that when someone uses a holistic remedy and then feels relief he tends to credit the remedy. This method does not hold water because most ailments resolve themselves (headache for example). Nevertheless, holistic medicine has strengths. One, it recognizes the psychological, environmental and social aspects of illness. Two, it involves the patient in his own treatment with activities etc... And three, it emphasizes preventive medicine as its base (holistic). Holistic medicine is a practice of health cares that that emphasizes treatment of the entire patient's body, mind and spirit. Mattson (2008) explains that "Hormesis is a term used by toxicologists to refer to a biphasic dose–response to an environmental agent characterized by a low dose stimulation or beneficial effect and a high dose inhibitory or toxic effect. In the fields of biology and medicine hormesis is defined as an adaptive response of cells and organisms to a moderate (usually intermittent) stress." The Arndt–Schultz law was named after Hugo Paul Friedrich Schultz and Rudolf Arndt in 1888. It has since been replaced with the term 'Hormesis" to fully explain the principle thereof. The basis of the theory or law is that a low dose of medication or remedy will stimulate cellular activity for healing, a medium dose will inhibit activity and a high dose will stop all cellular activity. Homeopathy is a system of medicine that treats an illness or condition with highly diluted concentrations of natural ingredients that mimic the symptoms of the condition being treated. It seems like an odd premise, but in spite of the unusual mechanism behind it, it is a very effective method for treating disease. How do you cure someone of an illness by giving that person a tiny concentration of something that actually causes the illness? Dr. George Albert Wrong Case Description of the Issue In Re Guess case, the Board of Medical Practitioners concluded that Dr George Albert Guess could not practice homeopathy, an alternative medical treatment, because this practice did not comply with the standards set by North Carolina's medical professionals. As a result, he was restricted from administering this treatment to patients and would not be able to practice medicine if he failed to comply. However, medical standards are set in place to protect the patient from outcomes they are not aware of. Thus, restricting physicians from practicing homeopathic medical treatment does not interfere with patient's rights. Instead it ensures that patients are protected so that they can fully exercise their rights. Rights of a Patient The physician–patient relationship has greatly evolved in the twenty–first century when compared to previous centuries in which the Hippocratic Oath and not patient's rights was the forerunner of the medical system. The shift to a balanced physician–patient relationship has entailed more rights for patients, such as less abortion restrictions and physician–assisted suicide. As patients obtained more medical rights, individuals explored more nontraditional medical practices as a way to heal. As a result, alternative medicine gained a lot of traction. There is evidence to show that homeopathic medication has helpful effects and can help treat hypertension. Blood pressure is the pressure of blood flowing in the walls of the blood vessels. It is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHG) and written with the systolic number over the diastolic number. A normal blood pressure is lower than 120/80 mm HG. Something higher than 120/80 mmHG means the patient has high blood pressure. Hypertension can be caused by factors such as unhealthy eating, excess intake of salt or alcohol, being overweight, not exercising enough, or genetic makeup. Blood pressure can increase when the physical and emotional aspects of a person are affected by stress. When blood pressure is raised, it can put a force on the heart and the heart may not beat normally. Therefore, it is important to start and maintain a healthy lifestyle. High blood pressure is a silent killer because it affects people without them noticing so it is important to get it measured. Hypertension ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. Principle Of Homeopathy Homeopathy is a form of alternative and complementary medicine which was developed in the late 1800s, by a German orthodox physicist, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755–1843). It is based on the principle of "like cures like". This is an idea that is claimed widely by many homeopaths to have already been established by Hippocrates (460–377BC) and merely expanded upon by Hahnemann. However, there are also many who consider this to be untrue. Homeopathy was developed during the Industrial Revolution, a period encompassing vast technological, economic and social changes. Many people belonging to the lower class were forced to live in poor living conditions and there developed an increased need for hospital, doctors and medication. However, blood–letting, purging and giving patients large doses of toxic materials such as arsenic and lead were commonplace methods employed by many conventional doctors during this time. Hahnemann disagreed with these harsh methods and began to develop the intricate system of homeopathy to provide medical care for even those of the lower class. This essay will be about how Homeopathic Medicine is a pseudoscience and does not work. The three points I will be making are: homeopathy is outdated, homeopathic medicine is water, homeopathic medicine are placebos at best. Homeopathy is an outdated method of medicine proposed in the year 1796. It was said to spiritually and physically heal you of any ailments. The claim of it spiritually healing you should be enough to call it pseudo. The medicine is created by mixing a substance into water. The concept of it was like cures like. In Homeopathy the more you dilute the substance in water the stronger it becomes. A common Homeopathic medicine has the dilution 30c which basically means 1 part medicine to 100 to the power of 30 parts water. This an extremely small amount. Most Homeopaths realize this and say that there isn't a signal drop of substance in the water. Homeopathic Medicine are just placebos at best. In 2013 the NHMRC(National Health and Medical Research Council) did a review of Homeopathy. They examined 68 medical conditions and out of those 7 had no good evidence for either side and 61 had no evidence of improvement with Homeopathy. Also a few years before that the UK House of Commons Science and Technology Committee did there own report basically concluding that it is a placebo. "In our view, the systematic reviews and meta–analyses conclusively demonstrate that homeopathic products perform no better than placebos. The Government shares our interpretation of the evidence. We asked the Minister, Mike O'Brien, whether the Government had any credible evidence that homeopathy works beyond the placebo effect and he responded: "the straight answer is no"."– UK House of Commons Science and Technology ... • 36. Factors That Affect Access For Complementary Therapies In this assignment I will be explaining factors that affect access to complementary therapies; I will then explain how the use of complementary therapies is regulated. Then I will explain the principles and practises of complementary therapies I will then go on to discuss complementary therapies that are available for users of Health & Social Care services. P1 P2 The practice of conventional medicine is regulated by special laws that ensure that practitioners are properly qualified, and keep to certain standards or codes of practice. Regulation of complementary and alternative medicine Currently, practitioners of two complementary and alternative medicines are regulated in the same way as practitioners of conventional medicine. They are osteopathy and chiropractic. This regulation is called statutory professional regulation. This regulation makes sure that registered practitioners of osteopathy and chiropractic are properly qualified and that they practise in a way that is safe and ethical, following the standards and codes set by their professional regulators. A regulation exists to protect a patient's safety – on its own it doesn't mean that there is scientific evidence that a treatment is effective. Unregulated complementary and alternative medicines In the UK there is currently no statutory professional regulation of any other complementary and alternative medicine practitioners. This means, for example that anyone in the UK can legally call themselves a homeopath ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Holism In Medicine In the western healing arts, vitalism is a holistic approach intended for the prevention and treatment of disease by promoting one's vital force. Therefore, Di Stefano describes the vital force as a 'coherent life force that regulates and governs the growth, repair and regeneration of the body and its diverse systems, it has also been described as the spirit of life, or spiritus vitae' (Di Stefano, 2006, pp. 107). Similar to 'chi' in Chinese medicine or 'prana' in Ayurveda, the vital force acts as a defense against disease and is often referred to as a medium that connects us with the rest of the world and universe. Hippocrates put forth the idea that the doctor could aid the 'physis' through patient means such as nutrition and the removal of toxins from the body. Seven centuries later, the philosophy of vitalism was modified by Galen. He was focused in finding correlations and solutions for natural phenomena in the organism. Moreover, Galen proposed the concept of the 'pneuma' or spirit, detailing three different spirits that were inside all humans: the vital, animal and natural spirits (Wood, 2005). Interestingly enough, these were the perspectives of vitalism at the time Paracelsus began to enter the medical field. Therefore, Paracelsus had a much different view of the vital force, 'he saw vitalism as an active, directing intelligence, which conserved and restored the organism in an active fashion' (Wood, 2005, pp. 14–15). Paracelsus' notion of vitalism exerted a significant influence in the evolution of medicine, including Van Helmont's alchemical medicine, Hahnemann'shomeopathy, eclecticism and Thomsonian herbalism. Furthermore, we can see throughout history how the concept of vitalism has evolved, but it is still maintained around the fundamental principle as the force that drives us, that gives us our ... Some applications are acupuncture, salt treatments, reiki, aromatherapy, and magnet therapy. These treatments can be used for various ailments such as: chronic pain management, illnesses, stress relievers, respiratory problems, and skin conditions. As a pre–med student I am curious why these medicine alternatives are used as treatment methods. Although some of these alternative treatments have been used for thousands of years, how do we know for certain they are effective? Is alternative medicine an acceptable treatment option? The Oxford Dictionary defines alternative medicine as any of a range of medical therapies that are not regarded as orthodox by the medical profession. To truly understand the modern usage of alternative medicine in the United States, however, I feel it would be best to look back at where the fad started. According to the Atlantic, alternative medicine started to become popular in the 1990s. An article in 1993 in The New England Journal of Medicine stated that one in three Americans were using some form of unconventional therapy or alternative medicine (Gritz). Enough Americans had interest that Congress established an office just for alternative medicine within the National Institutes of Health (Gritz). • 43. In this study there were several selection criteria which may have ruled out a certain population from participating. The inclusion criteria stated that the participant must have at least moderate pain on movement, additionally if NSAIDs or analgesic treatments were previously undertaken additional criteria needed to be met. The study also ruled out subjects with severe OA requiring surgery, subjects with skin affections on the treated knee, and subjects with additional joint diseases. The external validity of the study may be reduced, due to the selection criteria being exclusive to a significant number of the population of interest. To limit the diagnostic purity bias the exclusion criteria should be more open, this would lead to greater representation of the wider population rather than specific group of people. Participation bias During this study the subjects were given a gel and instructed to apply it three times daily to the affected knee. At the end of the study pain on walking and the single joint Ritchie index were the main outcome measures (Van Haselen, & Fisher 2000, p. 715). Consequently, the subjects in this study would most likely have a good idea of the purpose behind this study. Ultimately this could cause the subjects to subconsciously alter their behaviours and attitudes to match how they think the researchers want them to behave. One example of this may be that ... He was later voted to the U.S. Senate and in 1938 where he sponsored the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act that integrated homeopathic medicines into federal law. Aside from herbs and supplements, which are known as food and cannot be promoted for the aversion or treatment of particular sicknesses, homeopathic prescriptions are medications that can be advertised for particular conditions. A homeopathic medication can be sold to the community providing that the affliction for which it is guaranteed to treat has an OTC sign (an illness which is self–limiting) and does not require medical monitoring or a medicinal diagnosis. Due to these features, it is unlawful for homeopathic medicine or any other OTC medication to be promoted for genuine medical conditions, like multiple sclerosis, coronary illness, diabetes, or likewise dangerous conditions. Though these conditions are not self–limiting, there are different conditions that are self–limiting that require a diagnosis from a doctor. This, therefore, takes us to the most shared concerns people present about how homeopathic medicines are manufactured and of their safety. The raw materials used for various homeopathic medicines are known poisons. Samuel Hahnemann's goal was to search for a means to treat patients less severely than the treatments used in his day, which often involved purging, leeching, bloodletting, ...
