Abstract
The purpose of this working paper is to introduce the concept of ‘coworking’ to an academic audience. It argues that coworking is a complex social phenomenon that can be differentiated from other spatial concepts that relate to work, learning and social interactions.
The paper provides an
historical account of the origins of coworking and reviews the existing scholarly and popular literature, offering a theoretical distinction between coworking spaces and serviced offices that
hinges upon the degree of social collaboration versus the importance of location and facilities of the office environment.
An overview of recent data on the number and location of coworking spaces across the world is provided, including a few examples that demonstrate the spatial distribution of coworking spaces within cities. It also provides some data on typical coworking profiles, and links coworking to the broader contextual debates on non-standard and creative work.
Finally the paper suggests some future research directions by linking relevant extant theory with key questions across the fields of economic geography, urban planning economics and
organisational studies.

This document describes a design workshop focused on civic engagement and empowerment. The workshop uses dialogic methods like World Cafe and Open Space to have participants discover current examples of community-led services, brainstorm new service possibilities for their neighborhood, and design one idea in small groups. Structured dialogue techniques aim to resolve groupthink and elicit root causes and interconnections to find consensus among diverse stakeholders. The goal is for citizens to co-create new community services to fill needs once expected of government.

How might we move or collective thinking and action beyond single-issue social action?
Does it make sense to build our urban worlds and future societies by winning one political issue at a time?
Can we design civic business models for our cities and society?
All social services, determinants of health, and economics are complex and interrelated. So why do we expect any political body or activist group to get it right? Only meaningfully diverse, multi-stakeholder groups can envision the variety of interests and outcomes in complex social systems. In February's Design with Dialogue Peter Jones workshops tools for co-creating civic design proposals.
A significant design challenge of our time is anticipating the relationships of multiple environmental and social problems as a complex system of nonlinear relationships. However, we cannot think about, model or discuss the relationships well, especially in the heat of discussion with deliberative groups and decision making processes. We need not only better engagement and dialogue processes for citizen deliberative problem solving, we require relevant tools.
With the OCADU Strongly Sustainable Business Model Group and with Strategic Foresight & Innovation students we designed a relevant framework from the common language of business model tools, adapted for civic decision models for flourishing cities and settlements.
The Flourishing Cities framework adapts a design tool for strongly sustainable business models as a visual organizer for engaging stakeholders in co-creating normative operational guidance for civic groups, community planners, and local governments. Flourishing can be understood as “to live within an optimal range of human functioning, one that connotes goodness, generativity, growth, and resilience,” or as John Ehrenfeld states it:
“Flourishing is the possibility that human and other life will flourish on this planet forever.”
This visual model enables a participatory mapping of propositions, values, and preferences that might yield significantly better group decisions for sociocultural and ecological development and governance in any planning engagement.
Design for Social Innovation A Brief Overview
This presentation is a quick introduction and overview of Design for Social Innovation, including some local examples. The presentation was developed for students of the Design and Business Major at Auckland University of Technology and aims to help show how design extends and is adapted for the challenges of social innovation - with an emphasis on community involvement, collaboration and ownership of 'design' and 'change'.

CREATIVE PLACEMAKING: Thinking Beyond Projects
In the words of a recent National Endowment for the Arts report, Creative Placemaking animates public and private spaces, rejuvenates structures and streetscapes, improves local business viability and public safety, and brings diverse people together to celebrate, inspire, and be inspired.
Arts and culture have been a part of community revitalization and economic development strategies for years. Creative Placemaking is more than a new term for this effort -- at its highest levels, it involves a new way of thinking about the role of creativity in making society more sustainable. It is not just about doing projects -- it is also about the thinking behind the projects and about making stronger connections between creative, community and economic development.
Learn from experts and practitioners who have been at the heart of efforts to use creativity to grow communities and get a sneak peek at Creative Placemaking in action. Our three panelists will provide some helpful examples of what they have done in their communities:
Steve Dalhberg, is director of the Connecticut-based International Centre for Creativity and Imagination, vice president of innovation for Future Workplace, and faculty of "Creativity + Social Change" at the University of Connecticut.
Leonardo Vazquez, AICP/PP is the Director of Arts Build Communities at Rutgers University. He will discuss Rutgers¹ community coaching program and ABC¹s new Master Practitioner Certificate Program in creative placemaking.
The Wormfarm Institute in Sauk County, Wisconsin, is rural creative placemaking at its best. It's a 40-acre organic vegetable farm and creative hub, begun 15 years ago by artists Jay Salinas and Donna Neuwirth. Wormfarm aims to recreate the link that once existed between culture and agriculture with innovative and intuitive efforts that center around a sense of the land and the community.

Partners conducted background research and interviews in their local areas to inform the creation of an online toolbox to share knowledge and skills related to sustainable coworking ecosystems.
Community Alchemy: A Model for Building An Entrepreneurial Ecosytem
This model is a work-in-progress being developed to help formulate real world solutions togrow the entrepreneurial ecosystem/community in Cedar Rapids/Iowa City, Iowa, USA.
It is based on research and real world success in New Orleans, Omaha, Kansas City, Boulder, Nashville and Des Moines (similar cities). It is meant to be a broad based model that can be used to implement location-specific solutions that takes into account local resources and conditions in your city.

An app would allow digital nomads to book flexible co-working space on demand. Community profiles, maps showing available spaces, and "lifestyle clusters" would help members find spaces and each other. The system would harness collective intelligence and focus on discovery, collaboration, and continuing education through workshops and events. Temporary workspaces could potentially pop up in parks, courtyards, and beaches to magnetically draw in the nomadic community.
