The Populist Movement established the Populist Party in 1892 to protect farmers' interests and included demands to help American people through policies like increased currency, income tax, and government ownership of railroads. In 1896, the Populist Party fused with the Democratic Party to help their joint political goals as they supported William Jennings Bryan for president. However, Bryan's defeat destroyed the Populist Party, though some of their ideals were later embraced by the Progressive Movement.
