The Whig Party formed in the 1830s in opposition to President Andrew Jackson and his policies. The Whigs supported rechartering the National Bank, internal improvements, and limiting presidential power. They succeeded in electing two presidents, William Henry Harrison in 1840 and Zachary Taylor in 1848. However, disagreements over whether to extend or restrict slavery in the territories fractured the party along Northern and Southern lines, ultimately leading to its breakdown in the 1850s.
