Upstream
What is Upstream? Most oil and gas companies’ business structures are segmented and organized according to business segment, assets, or function.
The upstream segment of the business is also known as the exploration and production (E&P) sector because it encompasses activities related to searching for, recovering and producing crude oil and natural gas.
The upstream segment is all about wells: where to locate them; how deep and how far to drill them; and how to design, construct, operate and manage them to deliver the greatest possible return on investment with the lightest, safest and smallest operational footprint.
Exploration
The exploration sector involves obtaining a lease and permission to drill from the owners of onshore or offshore acreage thought to contain oil or gas, and conducting necessary geological and geophysical (G&G) surveys required to explore for (and hopefully find) economic accumulations of oil or gas.
Drilling
There is always uncertainty in the geological and geophysical survey results. The only way to be sure that a prospect is favorable is to drill an exploratory well. Drilling is physically creating the “borehole” in the ground that will eventually become an oil or gas well. This work is done by rig contractors and service companies in the Oilfield Services business sector.
Production
The production sector of the upstream segment maximizes recovery of petroleum from subsurface reservoirs.
Well completion and stimulation
After drilling is completed, wells undergo completion procedures to prepare them for production. This involves setting production casing and cementing it through the target zone. Tubing is run inside the casing with a packer to isolate the production zone. A Christmas tree is installed to control flow. Completion types include open hole, liners, and perforated casing. Perforating creates holes through casing into the formation. Some formations require stimulation like acidizing to improve permeability or fracturing to create conductive fractures held open by proppant. This increases flow into the wellbore.
Reservoir modeling and characterization
1) Sedimentary basins are regions where thick layers of sediment have accumulated, up to 20 km deep in some cases. They form primarily through the extension of tectonic plates.
2) Most sedimentary basins contain source rocks rich in organic matter that generate hydrocarbons like oil and gas during burial and heating over geological time.
3) If the right combination of source, reservoir, seal and timing conditions exist within a sedimentary basin, significant accumulations of oil and gas can be discovered and produced from conventional reservoirs.
Introduction to Reservoir Rock & Fluid Properties
This document discusses reservoir rock properties and how core samples are used to characterize reservoirs. Reservoir rocks must have porosity and permeability to store and transmit fluids. Core samples provide information on lithology, porosity, permeability and other properties essential for evaluating a reservoir's fluid storage and flow capabilities. Whole core samples are most representative but sidewall cores provide additional data points. Both core types are analyzed to understand factors like relative permeability needed for reservoir modeling and production forecasting.

EOR 3 miscible flooding
Miscible flooding involves injecting fluids that are miscible with residual oil trapped in the reservoir, allowing the fluids to fully mix at the molecular level. There are two main types of miscible flooding processes: single-contact processes where miscibility occurs immediately upon contact, and multiple-contact (dynamic) processes where miscibility occurs gradually through chemical exchange between phases. Multiple-contact processes include high-pressure vaporizing processes where a vapor phase is injected to vaporize components from the oil, and enriched-gas condensing processes where intermediates are condensed out of the injected gas into the oil.
Oil and gas industry overview
The petroleum industry involves exploring for oil and gas deposits, extracting them from the ground, refining oil into fuel products like gasoline and diesel, and transporting and marketing these products. It is divided into upstream (exploration and production), midstream (transportation, storage, and processing), and downstream (refining and distribution) sectors. Globally, oil accounts for around 33-53% of energy consumption in different regions. The United States consumes around 25% of the world's oil production each year. The petroleum industry represents the world's largest industry in terms of revenue.
Offshore drilling in petroleum
Offshore drilling is the process of drilling through the seabed to explore and extract petroleum deposits beneath the seafloor. It involves using seismic surveys to locate potential oil deposits, drilling holes hundreds to thousands of feet below the seabed using metal casing and drill pipes, and extracting oil through the wells. Offshore drilling poses environmental risks like oil spills that can harm ocean life and pollute shorelines if not properly regulated. Unconventional drilling methods allow drilling at angles and laterally to access more oil.

- Reservoirs are classified based on the composition of hydrocarbons present, initial reservoir pressure and temperature, and the pressure and temperature of produced fluids.
- A pressure-temperature diagram is used to classify reservoirs and describe the phase behavior of reservoir fluids, delineating the liquid, gas, and two-phase regions.
- Based on the diagram, reservoirs are classified as oil reservoirs if the temperature is below the critical temperature, and gas reservoirs if above the critical temperature.

Introduction to Oil and Gas Exploration
This brief overview of exploration includes segments on exploration processes, some historical perspective including an explanation of hydrocarbons, and finally we’ll discuss the ‘basin-play concept’.
There are 4 key steps to summarize the oil and gas exploration process:
First is understanding and evaluating the geologic setting, called a play,
Next is obtaining access to the potential reserves usually in the form of a lease.
The third step is determining where to drill and completing a successful discovery or “wildcat” well.
Finally, additional hydrocarbon reserves can be added to the portfolio of an oil company using guidelines set by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Oil and gas is composed of compressed hydrocarbons. It was formed millions of years ago in a process that began when plant and animal remains were covered by very deep layers of sediment – minute particles of rock and minerals. With time, extreme pressure and high temperatures, these particles became a mix of both solid (coal) and liquid hydrocarbons. Even diamonds are a form of hydrocarbons.
Early oil discoveries were traced from natural hydrocarbon seeps at the surface. Many major fields of California, Oklahoma, Mexico, Iran, Iraq and Indonesia were related to surface hydrocarbon seeps.
Petroleum economics
Investment decisions are among the most important decisions an organization can make as they are capital intensive, irreversible, and high risk. This document discusses the main elements of economic investment analysis including calculating a project's cash flow over its lifetime while accounting for inflation, time value of money, and uncertainty. Oil and gas is composed of compressed hydrocarbons. It was formed millions of years ago in a process that began when plant and animal remains were covered by very deep layers of sediment – minute particles of rock and minerals. With time, extreme pressure and high temperatures, these particles became a mix of both solid (coal) and liquid hydrocarbons. Even diamonds are a form of hydrocarbons.

B) Other than the above observation, fossil fuels are easily available. fossil fuels have been of
such a great source of energy, and there are many extractions going every day. Scientists and
geologists try to find out coal mines and petroleum fields to explore more of the fossil fuel, as
the pressure is increasing day by day due to increase in population and demand. Recent
advancement in science and geology, the refineries and the extraction procedures have also
improved and simplified a lot as compared to the earlier decades. This makes the availability
even smoother.
2. A) The biggest issue now a days with fossil fuels are the rising prices, Middle-east countries
such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and African nation such as Nigeria, have huge reserves of
oil and natural gas and many other countries are dependent on them for constant supply of these
fuels. Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is a group of 13 countries
including Iran, Iraq and UAE are responsible for supplying 37 to 43% percent of the world’s oil
production and hold the majority of the world’s oil reserves. OPEC has a close watch of all the
natural gas and oil consumed worldwide and then according to the statistics adjusts it with their
own production to maintain its desired barrel price, resulting in high fluctuations in oil rates per
barrel.
B) Fossil fuels are needed in huge reserves wherever their plants are set up. This requires them to
be transported to the desired location via truck, train, ship or airplane. Often we hear of some
leaks in oil tankers or ship getting drowned deep under the sea that were carrying crude oil to get
refined. The impact of this is that crude oil contains some toxic substances which when mixed up
with water poses serious impact on aquatic life. Transportation of crude oil via sea can cause oil
spill which can pose hazard to the aquatic life by lessening the oxygen content of water.

Where is petroleum found?
Today petroleum is found in vast underground reservoirs where there were ancient seas. Petroleum reserves can be located beneath the land, or under the ocean. Their crude oil is extracted with giant drilling machines.
How do you know where to find oil?
Geologists are the masters of locating oil. Often called oil exploration, geologists will look for an area that ticks all the boxes of finding an oil trap aka striking (black) gold.
Oil is often found in the vast underground reservoirs where ancient seas were once located. This can either be beneath land or out in the ocean below the seabed.
During the earlier years of oil mining, the geologists would study the soil, surface rock, and other surface features to determine if oil may be lying below.
Later came satellite imagery, along with more technological advances such as gravity meters, means to test the Earth’s magnetic field, and ‘sniffers’ that detect the smell of hydrocarbons.
The most common way used today is to generate shock waves that pass through the rock layers and reflect back to the surface where they can be interpreted for signs of oil traps. This is done with seismic source devices such as a compressed-air gun, a thumper truck, or explosives .

2015 Results Presentation
Repsol's adjusted net income for 2015 was €1,860 million, a 9% rise over 2014. Its net debt was reduced by over €1,100 million despite investments and interest payments. Production reached 697,000 barrels per day, up 88% year-over-year. Downstream business performed strongly with refining margins doubling versus prior year. Measures to reduce costs and investments will lower the breakeven price to $40 per barrel.

- 1. 2.Identification and Exploration 1. Origin The origin of oil and gas goes back millions of years. Sediments from plants, animals, and microorganisms make up the natural reserves of hydrocarbons. The exploration phase begins with the acquisition of mining rights and the subsequent seismic surveying to determine the location of hydrocarbon reserves. 3. Development and Production 5. Refining Once the deposits have been identified, the process of drilling development wells and building facilities to start up production on the reserves begins. The strictest safety and environmental standards are always followed. 4. Transport and Storage The extracted hydrocarbons are transported through pipelines to a surface facility where they are stored in tanks. Crude oil extracted at offshore platforms is transported through subsea pipelines or oil cargo ships to refining, processing, and storage plants. In the refinery, the crude oil's component parts are separated to create products, fuels, and raw materials for use in modern life. 6.
