On May 30th, 1381, Thomas Bampton attempted to collect the third Poll Tax from the villagers of Fobbing in Essex, which sparked rebellion among the peasants. For several years, England had been struggling in the war with France, the country was being ruled by a 14-year-old king, and a priest named John Ball had been criticizing wealthy priests and lords and preaching about equality. In March 1381, Parliament sent commissioners to collect the third Poll Tax in four years, further angering the peasants who were already bitter about their treatment after the Black Death and laws preventing wages from rising. refused to work for their lords. This
had been going on since 1300.
