The Pajama Game
In Parichy's book, Illuminating the play, he describes a production of The Pajama Game that he
designed for. The choices he made for lighting were influenced by many factors as well as the
sketches he was provided by the scenic designer. In contemplating the design in my mind, the
following observations are provided.
I chose the sketch 5–4, Babe's Kitchen. The priority for lighting this scene is keeping with the idea
of 1950's color schemes. This era was characterized by very bright and solid colors. The scene
designer had already provided a framework kitchen wall with vintage looking appliance and
furniture.
The main piece on the stage was the large cyc upstage. Given the sparse amount of scenery and set
pieces, the cyc will most likely influence

In this lab the purpose was to investigate that light and water are both needed for photosynthesis.
The hypothesis was if the disk was placed in light then it will float and if the disk was not placed in
light then the disk will not float. The prediction for this lab is that in light the disk will float and in
darkness it will not. The materials needed for this project were containers, leaves, light source and
light blocker. Also needed for this lab is a syringe, sodium bicarbonate, water and a hole punch.
The procedure for the lab was first to cut holes in the leaves to get little leaves to test the lab. Then
you will fill 2 cups with about 150ml of water. Mix ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cut out parts of leaves to be the testes for the experiment to see if the lab was true. Then we sucked
all the oxygen out of the leaves and placed them under light and under darkness. This was to test to
see if light and water were needed.
The data shows that photosynthesis really does need water and light. No disks floated in the dark
because there was no light. In the light experiment there was only 6 disks to begin with. The data
proves the hypothesis correct, it was predicted that no disks were going to float.
The error in this experiment was the distance of light from the cup, the amount of oxygen that was
taken from the disks. Some of the oxygen may not have gotten out.
1)What is the variable for this experiment? The amount of leaves that floated
What problem/question did you answer in the experiment? Does light and dark change how
photosynthesis works?

Shelves of forgotten novels line the fourwalls, and a large window is strategically placed between

Low Key Lighting In Casablanca
The drama in Casablanca comes from the use of low–key lighting. The lighting is used to capture
the essence of the drama. The filmmaker uses light or the absence of light to mirror the emotional
response of the character for the viewer. The filmmaker uses three different types of lighting key–
light, backlight, and fill light. The lighting in the film is used to focus the viewer on the complexity
of the relationship between Rick and Ilsa. The low key lighting that is used in Casablanca shows the
confusion and the innocence of Ilsa's feelings that she has for Rick. During the one scene of the
movie, when Ilsa walks out of the doorway and into the room, Ilsa is shot in the light, while Rick is
kept in the dark. The filmmaker uses backlighting

Lab Report: Understanding Photosynthesis
Gen Biology Lab
Abstract: This lab was called photosynthesis: understanding photosynthesis. It is a highly complex
process that needs to be broken down in many steps to understand how it works. This lab covers the
big components in photosynthesis including carbon dioxide intake, light consumption, and varying
pigmentation.
Introduction:
Photosynthesis is a huge concept to learn and understand in the field of biology. Plants have their
own special way of using the ATP they produce. Photosynthesis is a process where plants harness
the sunlight they receive and they produce carbohydrates, as well as oxygen for living things and
other plants. Now the sunlight ultimately powers the process of ... Show more content on

First we obtained a leaf from our instructor. Then we sketched the leaf and labeled the blade and
petiole. The following procedure dealt with a chromatogram. The materials needed are: a pencil,
safety goggles, scissors, chromatography paper strip, capillary tube, spinach plant pigment extract,
test tube, cork stopper, graduated cylinder, chromatography solvent (alternative isopropyl alcohol),
metric ruler, stopwatch or clock with a secondhand, hook/fashioned paperclip, paper towels, test
tube rack, and mortar and pestle. First we obtained a strip of chromatography paper and cut it so it
would fit inside a test tube (with it barely touching the bottom of the tube). Also, when touching the
strip, touch the sides only. Then we attached (firmly) the top of the strip to a hook (or fashioned
paperclip at bottom of the cork stopper). Make sure it fits in the test tube. Next we used the pencil to
draw a faint line across the strip two centimeters from the bottom tip of the strip. We placed the cork
and strip in place, and we put a mark on the test tube one centimeter below the top of the stopper.
The next step was to place the strip of chromatography paper on a paper towel. Then dip a capillary
tube into the plant pigment extract (spinach pigment extract) provided by the teacher. The tube will
fill on its own. We applied the extract to the pencil line on the paper, blew the strip dry, and repeated
it three to four times until the line on the paper is a dark

The purpose of the photosynthesis lab is to see to how fast photosynthesis occurs in a leaf in relation
to different color lights. We changed the dependant variable to see how the different colors of light
affects the overall time it takes for photosynthesis to take place and the leaf disc to rise. My
hypothesis suggested that if the beaker had a colored lid on top of it, the light color will affect the
rate of the leaf disc rise compared to the beakers with white (regular) light or no light. As it turns
out, my hypothesis was supported and correct. The color of the lid did affect the rate photosynthesis
occurred. The reason the leaves float to the top is because, during the photosynthesis process,
oxygen bubbles form in the leaf, thereby making the leaf float. ... Show more content on

We then removed the air in the leaf discs, (which would help the leaf float) by vacuuming it with a
syringe. After that, we placed five leaf discs in each beaker, and timed the amount of time it took for
each leaf disc to hit the surface of the liquid mixture with the different colored lids/lights. By
placing an air–free leaf at the bottom of each beaker, then waiting to record the time when the leaf
hits the top (photosynthesis will have produced oxygen bubbles to make it float), this procedure will
show us how quick photosynthesis takes place using different color lights. The bar graph shows that
there is a correlation between the color of the light and the time it takes for the leaves to float up.
The blue light took an average of 8.2 minutes to rise; the green light, 14.4 minutes; the white light,
13 minutes; and the no light had not floated up by the time class ended. As one can see, the blue
time was faster than the white time by about 63%, and the green time was slower than the white
time by about 11%. The color of the lights had an impact on the rate of

Light Wavelength Lab Report
In the effect of light wavelength experiment, the action spectrum is used to demonstrate the
effectiveness of various wavelengths of light on photosynthesis. To observe these effects of the
wavelengths the wavelength pigments red, blue, green, white light, and no light are used.
In the experiment, spinach leave disks were aspirated in a sodium bicarbonate solution in order to
remove all internal gases and make the disks sink to the bottom of a beaker. Each beaker full of 10
spinach disks was placed into a different box with a different colored light source. The purpose of
this was to observe which wavelengths had an effect on photosynthesis by seeing which beaker had
floating spinach disks. If a spinach disk floated to the top of the beaker this would mean that the
intercellular space of the leaf would fill with oxygen, concluding that it was undergoing
photosynthesis. The different number of disks that floated to the top however, determines how great
of an effect the certain wavelength had on the leaves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The beaker in white light would be the positive control since white light contains all pigments of the
visible spectrum, so it will definitely make leaves float to the top as it promotes photosynthesis. The
beaker in no light serves as the negative control since no wavelengths are being used and no
photosynthesis will occur with the absence of photon excitement from a light source. The results
from the experiment reflected this as seen in the chart below, where white light had the most floating
disks in a 30 minutes time period, and the dark had no floating disks. As for the other wavelengths
of light, the red and blue light had the most floating leaf disks after white light and the green had no
floating disks similar to the beaker in no light. The green light had no effect on the leaf disks
because the light was simply reflected, since the chlorophyll cant absorb

beyond the horizon. Yet the sun manages to send some of its rays of light to the forest floor, keeping
the area illuminated and comforting. It feels safe. The air feels refreshingly clear and humid, and

Our group moves closer. Slabs of rock, the size of a car, replace the dense forest on either side.
These slabs are made of steel grey layers stacked on top of each other, with green specks of moss

cave. I see the bottom. A slab the size of a semi–truck is sunk into the ground. This semi–truck feels
like it is made of sandpaper; it scrapes my hand as I hold it for support. The faint drone of
conversation stops. Around me, the forest becomes quiet enough for every step to sound like

somehow quieter than when I plug my ears. Yet in the black abyss I can see fear: the eight red eyes
of a giant spider, the loose rock on the edge of a high cliff, and the realization of failure. The
unknown surrounds me ahead, while light promises safety behind. I step forward. Inside the hole,

The Different Lighting Techniques In The Film Touch Of Evil
In the scene provided from the movie touch of evil there are many different lighting techniques used
throughout the clip each one of these different lighting set ups is used for a different reason either to
set a mood or even put emphasis on a certain subject this paper will discuss the different techniques
used in the touch of evil scene
A prime example of cameo lighting is within the first 5 to 10 seconds of the film there's a key light
shining from the side of the characters to create deep and very dense shadows on the side of their
features as well as some other shadows this is just enough light to show some scenery in the
background but it's very very little this is a prime example of cameo lighting
Around second 23 of the film Rembrandt lighting is used Rembrandt lighting is lighting that focuses
on selective illumination in small amounts of background lighting there's also some transparency in
the shadows that are created so more than likely a key light and a fill light are used

Light On Photosynthesis
This lab allowed the experimenters to understand the effect of light on the producer's
photosynthesis. Once understanding how the light dependent reactions of photosynthesis worked,
the experimenters can make predictions on how the light will affect the photosynthesis. For
example, a low amount of light will affect the light dependent reactions of photosynthesis because
light is essential for those reactions. The question the experimenters asked was, "Does having more
or less exposure to light cause a faster rate of photosynthesis?" The experimenters first had to know
that the leaf tissue of a producer contains gas–filled intercellular spaces. Since the leaf have these
spaces, they float when placed in a solution. When the leaf disks are put into a vacuum pump, the
gases leave the intercellular spaces and the liquid fills these spaces. In doing so, the leaf disks sink
to the bottom. This is because the liquid have a higher density than the gases that were in those
spaces. As oxygen is made by photosynthesis, it diffuses into the intercellular spaces. When there is
enough oxygen in the intercellular spaces, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the amount of time the experimenters waited before looking at each petri dish was not
exact. Having this could've caused an experimental error because each petri dish could've have more
or less time under their light amount. This would affect how many reactions of photosynthesis the
leaf disks would've done, causing the number of leaf disks floating to be incorrect. A way to fix is to
have a timer, so that way each petri dish could have to same time of light exposure. In conclusion,
the experimenters learned that the higher amount of light caused more leaf disk to be floating. This
is supported by what the experimenters learn in class, because light is used in the light dependent
reactions of photosynthesis. Therefore, having more light would have to produce more

Energy Gap Between Electron Shells
Numerous metals and different substances radiate splendid shades of obvious light when they are
warmed. The colors originate from electrons moving between energy levels. The energy gaps
between their electron shells relate with the energy of the colour they give off. so the energy of
every colour of light matches the energy gaps between electron shells in different atoms.
Electrons are orchestrated into energy levels. Shells are concentric districts of electron thickness that
are fixated on the core(nucleus) of the atom. The bigger the shell, the further its electrons are from
the nucleus and the higher their energy is is. electrons fill the most reduced shells before filling
higher shells. So there are shells, and there are energy gaps ... Show more content on

When white light (which is made of all the colors of the rainbow) strikes a red object, its atoms
specifically absorb and re–emit red light; all the other colors of light simply cause the object to get a
bit warmer.
At the point when a fire works blast, it conveys smoldering protuberances that contain, in addition to
other things, metal salts. These metal salts are warmed and start sparkle in fabulous hues. Metal salts
that are regularly utilized as a part of fireworks presentations include: strontium carbonate (red
fireworks), calcium chloride (orange fireworks), sodium nitrate (yellow fireworks), barium chloride
(green fireworks) and copper chloride (blue fireworks). Purple fireworks are typically produced by
use of a mixture of strontium (red) and copper (blue) compounds.
The metal salts are stuffed into a firecracker tiny pellets called stars. After a firecracker is lighten, a

Essay on West Side Story
West Side Story
In this musical, it uses several types of narratives, for example, after the fight between the Jets and
Puerto Ricans, after the police leave, they enter the ally and the girl is begging to join the gang
saying how much she wants to fight is a part of narrative sexuality (B 34). The girl is more of a tom
boy who wants to be like one of the guys.
Also, in the West Side Story, it uses many camera angles and distances. One example is the high–
angle shot (B 49). In the very beginning the camera shows an overview of the West Side. I think that

It shows the audience how big each gang is.
The West Side Story also uses different types of lighting. One example is in the beginning where
they Jets and Puerto Ricans are fighting uses a type of general set lighting (B 53). Since it is a day
time exterior scene much of the lighting is not needed because it is using the sun. I may use mirrors
or reflectors to use more lighting (B 53). An example of low–key lighting is used in the dance scene,
(where they are in a red room and they are dancing) they director is using the low–key lighting
system (B 54) because it just shows the shadows in red and black. Another example of low key light
(B 54) is when the girl is on the fire escape ladder in her night gown talking to the guy in the yellow
jacket. In this scene it is very dark except for both of the people. Another example of low key light is
right after the sunrise scene in the second act where the picture is all red except for two black
looking diamonds. Afterwards, the camera moves out and the Jets climb over the fence. Another
example of lighting is in the second act when both gangs start fighting when the two people pull out
the knife the light reflects off the knife to show the audience how shiny, well kept, and sharp the one
knife is.

Scene Analysis Of Goodfellas
For my scene analysis, I will be talking about the scenes in Martin Scorsese's film, Goodfellas that
take place inside the nightclub. The film portrays the true story of mobster Henry Hill (played by
Ray Liotta) who grows up in the mob and works hard to advance himself through the ranks. He
enjoys his life of money and luxury, but is oblivious to the horror that he causes. During the film, the
mobsters spend a lot of their time enjoying themselves at a nightclub they frequent called the
"Copacabana". In Goodfellas, the Copacabana is a high class nightclub littered with mafia gangsters
and low key lighting with a red tint and a Hawaiian theme. The scenes were shot by
cinematographer, Michael Ballhaus. Inside the club, the lighting is primarily dark with a tint of red
which appears to be coming from the practicals seen within the shots. This is clearly to give off a
dark mafia vibe within the setting of the film. The DP wants the audience to have a sense of slight
discomfort within the nightclub and to foreshadow the dark events that take place throughout the
rest of the film. "The style of lighting displays the mafia lifestyle as something that is filled with
murder, deception, and constant fear". Bright lighting is only used during happy events during the
film such as Henry and Karen's wedding and to give off positive vibes for that moment. The scenes
inside the nightclub seem to have a lighting ratio of around 8:1, so it's accurate to say the setting
appeared pretty

Triangle Lightning Head Shot Essay
Here is a head shot with basic three point (triangle) lighting. Triangle lightning "refers to the
triangular arrangement of key, back, and fill lights, with the back light opposite the camera and to
the front of the side of the objects" (Zettl, 37). In this photo, there is an overhang light directly
behind the subject, acting like the kicker or back light; there are also two iPhone flash lights on
either side of the subject acting as the key and fill lights. Although this lighting is not idea or
professional, it does the subject justice illumining her all around her face and facial features.

to give the scene an expressive quality" (Zettl, 38). The purpose of this type of lighting is to give

How Does Hitchcock Use Low Key Lighting In Film
The art of lighting in filmmaking is a technique that formalist film directors such as Hitchcock
utilize to create suspense and mystery in their pictures and is popular within the genre because it
provides the ability to illuminate the environment yet maneuver shadows within the mise en scène.
Psycho was shot on a soundstage on the backlot of Universal Studios in Hollywood, California
which means that Hitchcock and cinematographer John L. Russell could manipulate the low–key
and high–key lighting throughout the film's theatrics. For example, during the parlour scene with
Marion and Norman, Hitchcock uses low–key lighting as his primary source because it creates a
densely ominous mood, adding a subtle ambiance to the scene and a disconcerting

Lighting and Themes in 127 Hours
There are plenty of films based on a true story and various ways to use lighting as a part of Mise en
Scéne to make all of those films seem more realistic or in sometimes unrealistic whichever is the
director's and cinematographer's take on the story. Danny Boyle's take on Aron Ralston's true story
of cutting his arm off to live has been to make it as realistic as it possibly can be. The film was shot
on and off set, mostly in constructed set of the canyon where Aron Ralston, portrayed by James
Franco, was trapped with his arm pinned between a large boulder and the canyon wall. The scene of
which lighting and themes this essay will discuss about starts from the point where James Franco's
character has just freed himself and starts running ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Josef von Sternberg has said that "the proper use of light can embellish and dramatize every object"
(Josef von Sternberg as quoted in Bordwell 2010, p. 131). As much as the lighting in this scene is
used to state Franco's character's state of mind it is also used to dramatize the scene and character's
struggle. This applies throughout the whole film and not just in this particular scene. Lighting
intensifies Franco's character's facial expressions as well as during his run through the canyon the
lighting is darkened and more shadowy most of the time to create realistic condition but it also adds
the feeling of length to the run.
In the part of the scene where the character is running through the canyon the lighting changes
constantly between darker and lighter. It is darker when he struggles and lighter on the easier parts
of the distance between his trap and freedom.
In the shots that are taken in the canyon the light is colder than in the ones that are taken outside.
The fill light is used to soften the contrast of shadows on characters face while he is in the canyon
(Pramaggiore and Wallis 2011, p. 111). For the first half of the scene, placed in the canyon, light is
constantly coming from above as sunlight between the cracks of the earth to the canyon. Franco's
character also keeps looking up to the sunlight after he has been freed from his trap. The character
has done that many times before in the film as desperately hoping to be free and now he

the sport just like fouls are a part of basketball. Cutting weight is one of the hardest parts of the
sport. As much as I love the sport of wrestling is probably how much I hate cutting weight, if not

Examples Of Mise En Scene In Psycho
Introduction
The term "mise en scene" carries the original meaning of "putting into scene" and was a term that
signifies the director's control of visuals and events in the frame. There are several aspects in mise
en scene. Aspect such as setting, lighting, costume and behavior of figures were controlled to allow
the director to stage the event and create the overall effect within the frame.
The film " Psycho" directed by Alfred Hitchcock was set in the sixties and was about a secretary
Marion Crane who goes on a run after embezzling forty thousand dollars from her employer in order
to settle the debt of her boyfriend, Sam Loomis. Overcome by exhaustion, she stops by Bates motel

In the establishing scene, Marion was wearing a white bra as she cuddles with her secret lover.
Hitchcock had chosen the white bra at the beginning to signify Marion's innocence. But after
stealing the money from her employer, we see Marion wearing a black bra and dressed over a dull
dress which signifying the bad deed she had done. Similarly, the white purse that Marion holds
before stealing the money was then changed to a black one upon committing the crime. Hitchcock
once again employs these subtle yet significant trails to the audience, increasing its impact on

The Role Of Light And Darkness In Baldwin's Common Sense
Common Sense seems to dictate that light and dark correspond to good and bad, day and night.
However Baldwin plays with the traditional ideas surrounding light and dark creating a foreboding
and horrific tone. Baldwin plays with these motifs because instead of the usual understanding of
dark being bad and light being good, he manipulates them into them both symbolizing bad or evil.
The narrator further supports this by explaining in paragraph 85, "when the light fills the room, the
child is filled with darkness"(19). The darkness that the narrator is referring to in this quote is the
darkness of Harlem's reality. The light and darkness work simultaneously to expose the realities of
Harlem to the children, therefore the light is negative as

Descriptive Essay About Dance
Dancers live for the immense anticipation, the skin burning neon lights, and the self confidence that
competition holds. People from all over the United States come to pour their heart, soul and talent
onto a ruggedly built stage; all for a sense of gratification and the golden coated plastic, crafted into
delicate looking ballerinas. From competition to competition, they all have one thing in common,
the intensity with each step. From gorgeously altered dancers who spend hours for perfection, to
award seeking teachers, who pour their hearts out into each choreography; the competition air is
thick to the touch with intensity. For me, it is precisely the thrill of dancing and the skin crawling
nerves from beyond the stage that keep me coming back. Hundreds of schools, thousands of dancers
and parents are there for one thing, first place. The tapping of jazz shoes, last minute stretching of
dancers and pep talks of the teams are all hidden by a glorified curtain. Backstage is known as the
"waking hour" for most dancers. Waking hour is the brisk five minutes dancers encounter the
strongest emotions. Crying, Nerves, anticipation, all crammed in these short five minutes, drive
dancers mad. Simple white painted halls are always lined with beautifully costumed dancers,
intricate props and the overwhelming smell of dried hairspray. Walking through these decorated
hallways lead to brightly colored doors signed with the words, "Backstage 1" or "Backstage 2"
sloppily painted on them . Within those intimidating doors will be the well lit stage, dripped with
sweat and nicks made from the shoes of dancers. For the dancer, stepping beyond the yellow stage
line is where everything slowly fades into reality. The stage beams with the bright green, blue and
white spot lights twirling around simultaneously with the dancers. After the rough five minutes are
over, the lights dim, the cheering subsides and the announcer declares the next performer. The
velvety crimson curtain closes and the dancer is rushed onto the stage; with the twisting of his or her
shoes and the shaking feet filled with adrenaline assume their starting positions. The curtains budge
a terrifying pop as they struggle to open. Smiles burst onto the faces of

Memento Mise En Scene Analysis
Nolan uses mise en scene to further develop the audience's understanding and view of the
protagonist, Shelby and his psychological struggles in the opening scene of Memento. Followed by
the non–linear editing, Nolan uses low key lighting to create a dark and dangerous atmosphere,
which shows Shelby as being vulnerable and in danger. However, the dim lighting suggests that
Shelby is a murderous man as he is holding the gun. This helps build tension felt by the audience by
making them want to understand who Shelby is and to learn why he has killed a man. At the start of
the film, the audience does not know his motive and become intrigued as they want to solve the
mystery as to why Shelby has committed murder. To further emphasise this, the setting is an empty,
isolated room that is low–key lit. this is immensely ominous as all the features carries connotations
of death. Shelby is wearing a suit, which suggests that the film is set in modern society. As it is set in
the modern society, it accentuates to sense of danger and the ominous feel to the audience as it is
seen as illegal and beyond convention to murder. The sense of danger is elevated by the fact that the
scene is directly after Shelby has committed murder. It shows Shelby's unperturbed facial expression
and a scratch on his cheek. The cut illustrates that he has endured some physical altercation with his
victim. Shelby's facial expression is rather confusing and rather concerning as he seems emotionless

The Symbolic Use of Light and Dark in James Baldwin's Sonny's Blues
In James Baldwin's "Sonny's Blues" a pair of brothers try to make sense of the urban decay that
surrounds and fills them. This quest to puzzle out the truth of the shadows within their hearts and on
the streets takes on a great importance. Baldwin meets his audience at a halfway mark: Sonny has
already fallen into drug use, and is now trying to return to a clean life with his brother's aid. The
narrator must first attempt to understand and make peace with his brother's drug use before he can
extend his help and heart to him. Sonny and his brother both struggle for acceptance. Sonny wants

In this instance light seems to be simply the good within a young Sonny. His brother is quickly
reminded however that just as Sonny's face was once light there were shadows too. Recalling this
younger Sonny forces the narrator to think of the other young boys he teaches. He connects the
darkness that Sonny faced with the darkness and reality those other young boys live with, "All they
really knew were two darknesses, the darkness of their lives, which was now closing in on them, and
the darkness of the movies, which had blinded them to that other darkness, and in which they now,
vindictively, dreamed, at once more together than they were at any other time, and more alone,"
(410). Here Baldwin gives us our first sense of the pervasive nature of darkness. It is engulfing the
boys without their realizing it, darkness is the wasted chances or lack of opportunity at all. The
movies show the youths a fairy tale of what could be but will never happen. This darkness of what
could have been keeps the young boys from attempting anything. They are together in this sentence
of fate but they are also painfully alone, because nothing will ever come of them. The young boys of
Harlem live in a dark reality; they do not know light and therefore cannot know hope. The narrator
begins to understand that there is no way out of the darkness for them and no escape from the reality
of drugs and crime that surrounds them.
Sonny is aware of the darkness which engulfs him. His

Twain's concept shines through in multiple stories of Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri.
Human vulnerability glimmers in the dark, while harsh public facades gloom over the daylight.
Lahiri utilizes darkness to display true selves, personalities the individual desires to be seen are

Hurwitz's Influence on Pacific Lumber in The Last Stand by David Harris
In The Last Stand, David Harris shows that the "old" Pacific Lumber practiced "selective cut" and
"sustained yield" forestry as opposed to "clear cutting". Under the "old" management, "selective
cut" and "sustained yield" were seen as beneficial and a more practical way to manage lumber and
timber. When the "new" management took over the company, the process of "clear cutting" was
taken into effect. Now in charge of Pacific Lumber, Charles Hurwitz played a major part in the
debate on how Pacific Lumber should operate. "Selective cutting" is the practice by which trees are

During "clear cutting", timber is cut and sold quickly. Once the crop of trees are cut and gone, there
is a time period in which the trees need to grow. Often, the new crops were not given substantial
time to grow to full size, as a result timber would be weaker and not quite as good of quality as the
old growth trees. Under the "old" management, it is very likely that Pacific Lumber would have kept
the process of "selective cutting" and not changed to "clear cutting". Important figures, such as Stan
Murphy, advocated for "selective cutting" for a number of reasons. With this process, regular profits
were possible rather than one large sum. It was better in the long run because profit was still
something that could be expected in the future which provided better stability for employees.
Workers had the confidence that they would still have a job in the future. There was very little
possibility of being laid off because there was insufficient amounts of work. With "selective
cutting", trees were always in circulation. "Sustained yield" had very similar effects to those of
"selective cut". The processes are comparable. Both leave trees to grow in the area to keep the land
fertile. The difference between them is that "sustained yield" works in a fashion that allows for more
profit by timbering trees in respect to a percentage that should and will be cut down. It differs from

Photosynthesis is a process where plants harness
the sunlight they receive and they produce carbohydrates, as well as oxygen for living things and

test tube, cork stopper, graduated cylinder, chromatography solvent (alternative isopropyl alcohol),
metric ruler, stopwatch or clock with a secondhand, hook/fashioned paperclip, paper towels, test

draw a faint line across the strip two centimeters from the bottom tip of the strip.

Introduction:
The primary goal of this experiment was to be shown if light is required to produce O2 during
photosynthesis. Also, to determine the effects of light and the rate at which photosynthesis operates.
() Photosynthesis is a process that the energy of light is captured and transformed into carbon
dioxide and water. There are two reactions that will be critical to the investigation which are light
independent reactions and light dependent reaction. Light independent reactions can occur in the
dark while light dependent reactions can't. The question that is being answered is, "Is light required
in the production of O2 in photosynthesis?" Predictions that were discussed were "If light is
required then oxygen will be produced." In this investigation there will be a negative and positive
control. The negative control will be the reaction that is kept out of light, while the positive control
is the reaction that is exposed to light. The control of this experiment is the temperature, the plant,

Analysis of Acquainted with the Night and Stopping by the...
Research Paper first draft

In a Dark Night, I Find My Answers. The two poems "Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening"
and "Acquainted with the Night" written by Robert Frost are very similar to each other because of
the simplistic form of language used and the uses of metaphors. When we first read the poem, it
looks like an ordinary poem but once we go in depth and understand the meaning, it becomes so
much more. Both of the poem has a very dark, gloomy and lonely setting with a really mysterious
tone. There are different metaphors used in each poem to symbolize death; "Sleep" in "Stopping By
Woods on a Snowy Evening" and "Night" in "Acquainted with the Night." The characters in the two

"I have walked out in rain –– and back in rain." from "Acquainted with the Night" shows the
depression of the character because most of us relate to rain as an emotional moment and makes us
feel vulnerable. When it rains, the whole atmosphere becomes very gloomy and sad, and the author
is trying to express the characters sadness.
The character in "Stopping by Woods in a Snowy Evening" is a very old fashioned person because
he is with a horse and rides his horse through the woods. "My little horse must think it queer. To
stop without a farmhouse near – Between the woods and frozen lake" shows how even his horse is
surprised to be stopping in the middle of the woods where there is no livelihood. It is very unusual
even for the horse to stop at this hour of the night because they should be trying to get home as soon
as possible since it is already dark. "He gives his harness bells a shake. To ask if there is some
mistake." express how the horse is also very attentive about what is going on around him and his
master's unusual behavior. The horse tries to confirm with the character whether or not they have
stopped in the right place.
"I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet. When far away an interrupted cry. Came over
houses from another street. But not to call me back or say good–bye," from "Acquainted With the

Spinach Photosynthesis Lab Report
We measured the rate of photosynthesis in this lab. By exposing spinach leaves to light, we were
triggering photosynthesis to start. Photons from the light excite electrons in the accessory pigments
in the leaves which then causes them to eventually transfer their energy to the chlorophyll a
molecule in the reaction center which causes an electron to jump to a primary electron acceptor, thus
moving the energy along. When this electron jumps, the photolysis of water occurs in order fill the
electron hole in the chlorophyll a molecules. H2O splits into electrons, H+ ions, and oxygen.
Therefore measuring the percentage of O2 in the container will be measuring the rate of
photosynthesis. As there was no increase in the amount of O2, this would ... Show more content on

For this lab, we used blue and red filters over the lights which, when measured, ended up having a
maximum emission for the blue filter of 491 nm while the red was 667 nm. Most red wavelengths
have a wavelength of 622 to 780 nm while blue wavelengths range from 455 to 492 nm
("Wavelength"). Moreover, "spinach photosynthetic pigment absorbed light optimally between
wavelengths of 400 nm and 450 nm and also at 650 nm" (Lederer). This means that the blue
wavelengths (being at 491 nm) were 41 nm higher that the optimally absorbed wavelengths. On the
other hand, the red wavelengths of the filter were only 17 nm over 650 nm and therefore were much
closer to the optimal absorbed light. The shorter distance between the red wavelengths shows that
the red filter was closest to the wavelength that spinach would get the most out of. The blue
wavelength was too far off from the optimal wavelength so it did not do as much for its spinach
leaves. This is why the red wavelengths may have increased the rate of photosynthesis over the blue

Physics Of Sunset Research Paper
When you picture a sunset you may only see the beauty behind it. Often times you may not look at a
sunset and wonder why the sun sets the way it does. The answer is physics. Physics is in every
sunset and makes the sunset the way it is. The first change you see when viewing this stunning
phenomenon–taking place is the coloration of the sun. According to the physics of sunsets, "On an
airless world like the Moon, the Sun at sunset would look no different than at any other time"
(Ethan, 2013). In reality, we are not in an airless world and our atmosphere is what makes the
sunsets so spectacular and looking nothing like the sun at all when it sets. In order to reach our eyes,

To our eyes, sunsets often appear reddish in color in their final stages which is all based on
wavelengths; "As the sun drops towards the horizon, it progressively loses violets and blues, then
greens and yellows, and finally even the oranges, leaving only the reds behind" (Ethan, 2013). High
frequency waves, or the GBIV of ROYGBIV, are scattered more easily through our atmosphere.
This is in comparison to the low frequency waves, or the ROY of ROYGBIV. If the sunset appears
red why does the sky appear blue? The BIV end of the spectrum that is being scattered throughout
our atmosphere is illuminating the sky making it appear blue to our eyes. Left on the visible

The rise of minimalist cooking is changing the art of food photography. The following is a look at
some of the techniques adopted by photographers to capture the simplicity and the spirit of this
modern cuisine. Whether it is because of the recession or a genuine desire to downsize and simplify,
minimalist cooking has become extremely popular. Everything from expensive and hard to acquire
ingredients to rarely used, specialized utensils and equipment have been pared back to the bare
minimum. Less is definitely more. Many photographers have noticed this change, either consciously
or intuitively and are evolving and adapting their techniques to suit. The old sumptuous saturated
glistening overfilled image just doesn 't seem to be a good match for this new approach to cooking
and food in general.
The photographers who get this and have a feel for the subject have started to utilize a few specific
techniques which serve to emphasize the subject matter but in a much more understated way and

The Dividing Line In 'All The Light We Cannot See'
The Dividing Line "Man is born pure, it is society that corrupts." These are the words of French
philosopher Jean–Jacques Rousseau, an Enlightened thinker in the eighteenth century. He believed
that by nature people were good, but altered and depraved by culture. The shift between good and
bad, light and dark, is also prevalent in Anthony Doerr's novel, All the Light We Cannot See, which
follows the story of Werner Pfennig and Marie–Laure LeBlanc. Both characters are born with a
lightness that is innocent and pure, but are challenged by the societies they are born in. Marie–Laure
is a sixteen year old French girl who is blind, and although she can no longer see the light of the
world, she is the only character who still embodies the same innocent lightness she did as a child.
Her childhood was spent soaking up the good rays of her Father's love. Unbeknownst to her that an
evil darkness surrounds her, but he protects from the pain going on in the world. While fleeing their
apartment in Saint–Malo, he takes her to a "hotel," which was an abandoned barn (110). She is
oblivious of the conditions, "her expression is faraway. Lost..." (110). Her lost expression shows
how Marie–Laure's perception of the world is adrift in a sea of distorted truth. She knows of the war
going on outside her window, but unaware ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Light and dark. Good and bad. These are the fundamentals characteristics that drive people. It is a
balancing act, but it is also human nature for there to be instability. The weight of light and dark
become disproportional and confused. For some, like Marie–Laure, the light will outshine the dark,
the good overcomes the bad, and love defeats war. Whereas, those who are more like Werner where
the darkness extinguishes the light and everything that was good, their outcome is very different.
Humans will always be at a "state of war" with themselves, battling their way through life. Only
those who recognize the light, even when they cannot see it, will

Personal Narrative: A Can Of Darkness
A Can of Darkness
Are you afraid of the dark? This is a question asked many years ago during an object lesson for a
children's church sermon. The object was a tennis ball canister with black construction paper
wrapped around it and a label. The label stated, can of darkness. I told the children to get ready,
because when the can of darkness is opened, darkness would fill the whole room. The children
counted one, two, three, go! As the lid was removed, darkness did not fill the room. I began to shake
the can upside down, and still no darkness. The room was still filled with the same amount of light.
Instead, light entered the can, chased away all the darkness and we could see the inside the can of
darkness. The object lesson helped to explain the scripture "The light shines in the darkness, and the
darkness has not overcome it" (John 1:5 NIV). Both the spiritual lesson and the physics lesson are
important concepts for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Several individuals experienced death as a result of the horrible act. But death cannot remove all the
light spread by the lives of the deceased. The messages of love, the picnic with family, the brave

their determination to love others more than their own life. I do not know with certainly the spiritual
beliefs of the victims or the shooter, but it appears that a spiritual chasm exists between the two. In
the book of Joshua, scripture compels readers... And if it seems evil unto you to serve the LORD,
choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on
the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and

Refraction Lab
There are various components to optics. A few of these components include refraction, index of
refraction, refractive index of a material, critical angle and total internal refraction. Refraction is the
bending of light when it moves from one material to another. Next, the index of refraction or
refractive index, is a number that tells how the speed of light in space compares with the speed of
light in a given substance. For example the refractive index of water is 1.33. The critical angle is the

Place the semi–circular container full of water under the horizontal line. Flat side lined up with the
horizontal line.
Aline the exact middle of the prism with the vertical line.
Use the ray box to shine a ray through the rounded side of the prism right to the center of the two
lines.
Keep the light ray aimed at the center and change the angle of the ray box until the refracted ray is
in line with the horizontal line.
Mark where the light exiting the ray box hits the prism.
Use a ruler to connect the mark to the center of the two lines.
Measure the angle from the vertical line to the angle drawn. This is the critical angle. Record on
diagram.
The experimentally determined refractive index of water was 1.3460.
The percent error was 1%.
One reason the experimental value was different from the accepted value is because the light ray
from the ray box had a width, causing the marking to not be perfectly centered in the ray. Another
reason the experimental value was different from the accepted value is because the semi–circular
container was not secured allowing movement between angles. The change of location of the
container would alter the angles

The Pajama Game

  • 1. The Pajama Game In Parichy's book, Illuminating the play, he describes a production of The Pajama Game that he designed for. The choices he made for lighting were influenced by many factors as well as the sketches he was provided by the scenic designer. In contemplating the design in my mind, the following observations are provided. I chose the sketch 5–4, Babe's Kitchen. The priority for lighting this scene is keeping with the idea of 1950's color schemes. This era was characterized by very bright and solid colors. The scene designer had already provided a framework kitchen wall with vintage looking appliance and furniture. The main piece on the stage was the large cyc upstage. Given the sparse amount of scenery and set pieces, the cyc will most likely influence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The hypothesis was if the disk was placed in light then it will float and if the disk was not placed in light then the disk will not float. The prediction for this lab is that in light the disk will float and in darkness it will not. The materials needed for this project were containers, leaves, light source and light blocker. Also needed for this lab is a syringe, sodium bicarbonate, water and a hole punch. The procedure for the lab was first to cut holes in the leaves to get little leaves to test the lab. Then you will fill 2 cups with about 150ml of water. Mix ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cut out parts of leaves to be the testes for the experiment to see if the lab was true. Then we sucked all the oxygen out of the leaves and placed them under light and under darkness. This was to test to see if light and water were needed. The data shows that photosynthesis really does need water and light. No disks floated in the dark because there was no light. In the light experiment there was only 6 disks to begin with. The data proves the hypothesis correct, it was predicted that no disks were going to float. The error in this experiment was the distance of light from the cup, the amount of oxygen that was taken from the disks. Some of the oxygen may not have gotten out. 1)What is the variable for this experiment? The amount of leaves that floated What problem/question did you answer in the experiment? Does light and dark change how photosynthesis works? 2) Why was detergent added to the solution? To take off the waxy covering on the leaf 3) Why was sodium bicarbonate added to the solution? The filmmaker uses light or the absence of light to mirror the emotional response of the character for the viewer. The filmmaker uses three different types of lighting key– light, backlight, and fill light. The lighting in the film is used to focus the viewer on the complexity of the relationship between Rick and Ilsa. The low key lighting that is used in Casablanca shows the confusion and the innocence of Ilsa's feelings that she has for Rick. During the one scene of the movie, when Ilsa walks out of the doorway and into the room, Ilsa is shot in the light, while Rick is kept in the dark. The filmmaker uses backlighting ... It is a highly complex process that needs to be broken down in many steps to understand how it works. This lab covers the big components in photosynthesis including carbon dioxide intake, light consumption, and varying pigmentation. Introduction: Photosynthesis is a huge concept to learn and understand in the field of biology. Plants have their own special way of using the ATP they produce. Photosynthesis is a process where plants harness the sunlight they receive and they produce carbohydrates, as well as oxygen for living things and other plants. Now the sunlight ultimately powers the process of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First we obtained a leaf from our instructor. Then we sketched the leaf and labeled the blade and petiole. The following procedure dealt with a chromatogram. The materials needed are: a pencil, safety goggles, scissors, chromatography paper strip, capillary tube, spinach plant pigment extract, test tube, cork stopper, graduated cylinder, chromatography solvent (alternative isopropyl alcohol), metric ruler, stopwatch or clock with a secondhand, hook/fashioned paperclip, paper towels, test tube rack, and mortar and pestle. First we obtained a strip of chromatography paper and cut it so it would fit inside a test tube (with it barely touching the bottom of the tube). Also, when touching the strip, touch the sides only. Then we attached (firmly) the top of the strip to a hook (or fashioned paperclip at bottom of the cork stopper). Make sure it fits in the test tube. Next we used the pencil to draw a faint line across the strip two centimeters from the bottom tip of the strip. We placed the cork and strip in place, and we put a mark on the test tube one centimeter below the top of the stopper. The next step was to place the strip of chromatography paper on a paper towel. Then dip a capillary tube into the plant pigment extract (spinach pigment extract) provided by the teacher. The tube will fill on its own. We applied the extract to the pencil line on the paper, blew the strip dry, and repeated it three to four times until the line on the paper is a dark ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Photosynthesis Lab The purpose of the photosynthesis lab is to see to how fast photosynthesis occurs in a leaf in relation to different color lights. We changed the dependant variable to see how the different colors of light affects the overall time it takes for photosynthesis to take place and the leaf disc to rise. My hypothesis suggested that if the beaker had a colored lid on top of it, the light color will affect the rate of the leaf disc rise compared to the beakers with white (regular) light or no light. As it turns out, my hypothesis was supported and correct. The color of the lid did affect the rate photosynthesis occurred. The reason the leaves float to the top is because, during the photosynthesis process, oxygen bubbles form in the leaf, thereby making the leaf float. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We then removed the air in the leaf discs, (which would help the leaf float) by vacuuming it with a syringe. After that, we placed five leaf discs in each beaker, and timed the amount of time it took for each leaf disc to hit the surface of the liquid mixture with the different colored lids/lights. By placing an air–free leaf at the bottom of each beaker, then waiting to record the time when the leaf hits the top (photosynthesis will have produced oxygen bubbles to make it float), this procedure will show us how quick photosynthesis takes place using different color lights. The bar graph shows that there is a correlation between the color of the light and the time it takes for the leaves to float up. The blue light took an average of 8.2 minutes to rise; the green light, 14.4 minutes; the white light, 13 minutes; and the no light had not floated up by the time class ended. As one can see, the blue time was faster than the white time by about 63%, and the green time was slower than the white time by about 11%. The color of the lights had an impact on the rate of ... • 14. Light Wavelength Lab Report In the effect of light wavelength experiment, the action spectrum is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of various wavelengths of light on photosynthesis. To observe these effects of the wavelengths the wavelength pigments red, blue, green, white light, and no light are used. In the experiment, spinach leave disks were aspirated in a sodium bicarbonate solution in order to remove all internal gases and make the disks sink to the bottom of a beaker. Each beaker full of 10 spinach disks was placed into a different box with a different colored light source. The purpose of this was to observe which wavelengths had an effect on photosynthesis by seeing which beaker had floating spinach disks. If a spinach disk floated to the top of the beaker this would mean that the intercellular space of the leaf would fill with oxygen, concluding that it was undergoing photosynthesis. The different number of disks that floated to the top however, determines how great of an effect the certain wavelength had on the leaves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The beaker in white light would be the positive control since white light contains all pigments of the visible spectrum, so it will definitely make leaves float to the top as it promotes photosynthesis. The beaker in no light serves as the negative control since no wavelengths are being used and no photosynthesis will occur with the absence of photon excitement from a light source. The results from the experiment reflected this as seen in the chart below, where white light had the most floating disks in a 30 minutes time period, and the dark had no floating disks. As for the other wavelengths of light, the red and blue light had the most floating leaf disks after white light and the green had no floating disks similar to the beaker in no light. The green light had no effect on the leaf disks because the light was simply reflected, since the chlorophyll cant absorb ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To see if this is true I will test to see if spinach leaves discs can be effected by photosynthesis. I predicted that more disc would float in the light than in the dark. After writing down my hypothesis, I started the procedure. I cut up the spinach leaves into the disc and put cold water in the three petri dishes so the leaves would float in the water. Then a water aspirator as vacuum to sink the disc down to the bottom of the petri dishes I put each petri dishes in a specific area. I put a petri in a dark cabinet, one under a lamp, and one in front of a window. I waited 15 minutes so it could have enough time to change color or float. Recorded if the disc were floating or not. However, the disc that were in the window light had more discs floating window light had more floating discs than the petri dishes in the lamp and the ones in the dark but not in. The function of light was to be the light that helped. The photometric analysis was used to see how many discs were floating due to the light due to the light or measuring the rate of photosynthesis of the discs. The hypothesis is supported when the light does have more disc floating in the petri dish than the dark did. The experiment was a success and helped us understand that photosynthesis occurs more in the light and not as much in the dark because of the effects of light. The disc floated back from the top because of oxygen being produced by chloroplast in the leaves. The disc in the dark floated because they still had a little bit of oxygen with them but because the leaf were in the dark the oxygen did not fill because of the chloroplast was in the dark. • 22. Light On Photosynthesis This lab allowed the experimenters to understand the effect of light on the producer's photosynthesis. Once understanding how the light dependent reactions of photosynthesis worked, the experimenters can make predictions on how the light will affect the photosynthesis. For example, a low amount of light will affect the light dependent reactions of photosynthesis because light is essential for those reactions. The question the experimenters asked was, "Does having more or less exposure to light cause a faster rate of photosynthesis?" The experimenters first had to know that the leaf tissue of a producer contains gas–filled intercellular spaces. Since the leaf have these spaces, they float when placed in a solution. When the leaf disks are put into a vacuum pump, the gases leave the intercellular spaces and the liquid fills these spaces. In doing so, the leaf disks sink to the bottom. This is because the liquid have a higher density than the gases that were in those spaces. As oxygen is made by photosynthesis, it diffuses into the intercellular spaces. When there is enough oxygen in the intercellular spaces, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the amount of time the experimenters waited before looking at each petri dish was not exact. Having this could've caused an experimental error because each petri dish could've have more or less time under their light amount. This would affect how many reactions of photosynthesis the leaf disks would've done, causing the number of leaf disks floating to be incorrect. A way to fix is to have a timer, so that way each petri dish could have to same time of light exposure. In conclusion, the experimenters learned that the higher amount of light caused more leaf disk to be floating. This is supported by what the experimenters learn in class, because light is used in the light dependent reactions of photosynthesis. Therefore, having more light would have to produce more ... The colors originate from electrons moving between energy levels. The energy gaps between their electron shells relate with the energy of the colour they give off. so the energy of every colour of light matches the energy gaps between electron shells in different atoms. Electrons are orchestrated into energy levels. Shells are concentric districts of electron thickness that are fixated on the core(nucleus) of the atom. The bigger the shell, the further its electrons are from the nucleus and the higher their energy is is. electrons fill the most reduced shells before filling higher shells. An example of low–key lighting is used in the dance scene, (where they are in a red room and they are dancing) they director is using the low–key lighting system (B 54) because it just shows the shadows in red and black. Another example of low key light (B 54) is when the girl is on the fire escape ladder in her night gown talking to the guy in the yellow jacket. In this scene it is very dark except for both of the people. Another example of low key light is right after the sunrise scene in the second act where the picture is all red except for two black looking diamonds. Afterwards, the camera moves out and the Jets climb over the fence. Another example of lighting is in the second act when both gangs start fighting when the two people pull out the knife the light reflects off the knife to show the audience how shiny, well kept, and sharp the one knife is. • 30. Photosynthesis Lab Photosynthesis is a the process in which plants and other organisms to turn light into energy. • 32. Scene Analysis Of Goodfellas For my scene analysis, I will be talking about the scenes in Martin Scorsese's film, Goodfellas that take place inside the nightclub. The film portrays the true story of mobster Henry Hill (played by Ray Liotta) who grows up in the mob and works hard to advance himself through the ranks. He enjoys his life of money and luxury, but is oblivious to the horror that he causes. During the film, the mobsters spend a lot of their time enjoying themselves at a nightclub they frequent called the "Copacabana". In Goodfellas, the Copacabana is a high class nightclub littered with mafia gangsters and low key lighting with a red tint and a Hawaiian theme. The scenes were shot by cinematographer, Michael Ballhaus. Inside the club, the lighting is primarily dark with a tint of red which appears to be coming from the practicals seen within the shots. This is clearly to give off a dark mafia vibe within the setting of the film. The DP wants the audience to have a sense of slight discomfort within the nightclub and to foreshadow the dark events that take place throughout the rest of the film. "The style of lighting displays the mafia lifestyle as something that is filled with murder, deception, and constant fear". Bright lighting is only used during happy events during the film such as Henry and Karen's wedding and to give off positive vibes for that moment. The scenes inside the nightclub seem to have a lighting ratio of around 8:1, so it's accurate to say the setting appeared pretty ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Triangle lightning "refers to the triangular arrangement of key, back, and fill lights, with the back light opposite the camera and to the front of the side of the objects" (Zettl, 37). In this photo, there is an overhang light directly behind the subject, acting like the kicker or back light; there are also two iPhone flash lights on either side of the subject acting as the key and fill lights. • 36. How Does Hitchcock Use Low Key Lighting In Film The art of lighting in filmmaking is a technique that formalist film directors such as Hitchcock utilize to create suspense and mystery in their pictures and is popular within the genre because it provides the ability to illuminate the environment yet maneuver shadows within the mise en scène. Psycho was shot on a soundstage on the backlot of Universal Studios in Hollywood, California which means that Hitchcock and cinematographer John L. Russell could manipulate the low–key and high–key lighting throughout the film's theatrics. For example, during the parlour scene with Marion and Norman, Hitchcock uses low–key lighting as his primary source because it creates a densely ominous mood, adding a subtle ambiance to the scene and a disconcerting ... Lighting and Themes in 127 Hours There are plenty of films based on a true story and various ways to use lighting as a part of Mise en Scéne to make all of those films seem more realistic or in sometimes unrealistic whichever is the director's and cinematographer's take on the story. Danny Boyle's take on Aron Ralston's true story of cutting his arm off to live has been to make it as realistic as it possibly can be. The film was shot on and off set, mostly in constructed set of the canyon where Aron Ralston, portrayed by James Franco, was trapped with his arm pinned between a large boulder and the canyon wall. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Josef von Sternberg has said that "the proper use of light can embellish and dramatize every object" (Josef von Sternberg as quoted in Bordwell 2010, p. 131). As much as the lighting in this scene is used to state Franco's character's state of mind it is also used to dramatize the scene and character's struggle. This applies throughout the whole film and not just in this particular scene. Lighting intensifies Franco's character's facial expressions as well as during his run through the canyon the lighting is darkened and more shadowy most of the time to create realistic condition but it also adds the feeling of length to the run. In the part of the scene where the character is running through the canyon the lighting changes constantly between darker and lighter. It is darker when he struggles and lighter on the easier parts of the distance between his trap and freedom. In the shots that are taken in the canyon the light is colder than in the ones that are taken outside. The fill light is used to soften the contrast of shadows on characters face while he is in the canyon (Pramaggiore and Wallis 2011, p. 111). For the first half of the scene, placed in the canyon, light is constantly coming from above as sunlight between the cracks of the earth to the canyon. Franco's character also keeps looking up to the sunlight after he has been freed from his trap. Examples Of Mise En Scene In Psycho Introduction The term "mise en scene" carries the original meaning of "putting into scene" and was a term that signifies the director's control of visuals and events in the frame. The film " Psycho" directed by Alfred Hitchcock was set in the sixties and was about a secretary Marion Crane who goes on a run after embezzling forty thousand dollars from her employer in order to settle the debt of her boyfriend, Sam Loomis. However Baldwin plays with the traditional ideas surrounding light and dark creating a foreboding and horrific tone. Baldwin plays with these motifs because instead of the usual understanding of dark being bad and light being good, he manipulates them into them both symbolizing bad or evil. The narrator further supports this by explaining in paragraph 85, "when the light fills the room, the child is filled with darkness"(19). The darkness that the narrator is referring to in this quote is the darkness of Harlem's reality. • 48. Descriptive Essay About Dance Dancers live for the immense anticipation, the skin burning neon lights, and the self confidence that competition holds. People from all over the United States come to pour their heart, soul and talent onto a ruggedly built stage; all for a sense of gratification and the golden coated plastic, crafted into delicate looking ballerinas. From competition to competition, they all have one thing in common, the intensity with each step. From gorgeously altered dancers who spend hours for perfection, to award seeking teachers, who pour their hearts out into each choreography; the competition air is thick to the touch with intensity. For me, it is precisely the thrill of dancing and the skin crawling nerves from beyond the stage that keep me coming back. Hundreds of schools, thousands of dancers and parents are there for one thing, first place. The tapping of jazz shoes, last minute stretching of dancers and pep talks of the teams are all hidden by a glorified curtain. Backstage is known as the "waking hour" for most dancers. Waking hour is the brisk five minutes dancers encounter the strongest emotions. Crying, Nerves, anticipation, all crammed in these short five minutes, drive dancers mad. Simple white painted halls are always lined with beautifully costumed dancers, intricate props and the overwhelming smell of dried hairspray. Walking through these decorated hallways lead to brightly colored doors signed with the words, "Backstage 1" or "Backstage 2" sloppily painted on them . Within those intimidating doors will be the well lit stage, dripped with sweat and nicks made from the shoes of dancers. For the dancer, stepping beyond the yellow stage line is where everything slowly fades into reality. The stage beams with the bright green, blue and white spot lights twirling around simultaneously with the dancers. After the rough five minutes are over, the lights dim, the cheering subsides and the announcer declares the next performer. The velvety crimson curtain closes and the dancer is rushed onto the stage; with the twisting of his or her shoes and the shaking feet filled with adrenaline assume their starting positions. The curtains budge a terrifying pop as they struggle to open. Smiles burst onto the faces of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Memento Mise En Scene Analysis Nolan uses mise en scene to further develop the audience's understanding and view of the protagonist, Shelby and his psychological struggles in the opening scene of Memento. Followed by the non–linear editing, Nolan uses low key lighting to create a dark and dangerous atmosphere, which shows Shelby as being vulnerable and in danger. However, the dim lighting suggests that Shelby is a murderous man as he is holding the gun. This helps build tension felt by the audience by making them want to understand who Shelby is and to learn why he has killed a man. At the start of the film, the audience does not know his motive and become intrigued as they want to solve the mystery as to why Shelby has committed murder. To further emphasise this, the setting is an empty, isolated room that is low–key lit. this is immensely ominous as all the features carries connotations of death. Shelby is wearing a suit, which suggests that the film is set in modern society. As it is set in the modern society, it accentuates to sense of danger and the ominous feel to the audience as it is seen as illegal and beyond convention to murder. The sense of danger is elevated by the fact that the scene is directly after Shelby has committed murder. It shows Shelby's unperturbed facial expression and a scratch on his cheek. The cut illustrates that he has endured some physical altercation with his victim. Shelby's facial expression is rather confusing and rather concerning as he seems emotionless after a ... He connects the darkness that Sonny faced with the darkness and reality those other young boys live with, "All they really knew were two darknesses, the darkness of their lives, which was now closing in on them, and the darkness of the movies, which had blinded them to that other darkness, and in which they now, vindictively, dreamed, at once more together than they were at any other time, and more alone," (410). The movies show the youths a fairy tale of what could be but will never happen. This darkness of what could have been keeps the young boys from attempting anything. They are together in this sentence of fate but they are also painfully alone, because nothing will ever come of them. Under the "old" management, "selective cut" and "sustained yield" were seen as beneficial and a more practical way to manage lumber and timber. When the "new" management took over the company, the process of "clear cutting" was taken into effect. During "clear cutting", timber is cut and sold quickly. Once the crop of trees are cut and gone, there is a time period in which the trees need to grow. Often, the new crops were not given substantial time to grow to full size, as a result timber would be weaker and not quite as good of quality as the old growth trees. Under the "old" management, it is very likely that Pacific Lumber would have kept the process of "selective cutting" and not changed to "clear cutting". Important figures, such as Stan Murphy, advocated for "selective cutting" for a number of reasons. With this process, regular profits were possible rather than one large sum. It was better in the long run because profit was still something that could be expected in the future which provided better stability for employees. Workers had the confidence that they would still have a job in the future. There was very little possibility of being laid off because there was insufficient amounts of work. With "selective cutting", trees were always in circulation. "Sustained yield" had very similar effects to those of "selective cut". The processes are comparable. Also, to determine the effects of light and the rate at which photosynthesis operates. There are two reactions that will be critical to the investigation which are light independent reactions and light dependent reaction. Light independent reactions can occur in the dark while light dependent reactions can't. The question that is being answered is, "Is light required in the production of O2 in photosynthesis?" Predictions that were discussed were "If light is required then oxygen will be produced." In this investigation there will be a negative and positive control. The negative control will be the reaction that is kept out of light, while the positive control is the reaction that is exposed to light. The control of this experiment is the temperature, the plant, and the light are all control variables. There are different metaphors used in each poem to symbolize death; "Sleep" in "Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening" and "Night" in "Acquainted with the Night." The characters in the two poem are both in a journey and has come ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "I have walked out in rain –– and back in rain." from "Acquainted with the Night" shows the depression of the character because most of us relate to rain as an emotional moment and makes us feel vulnerable. When it rains, the whole atmosphere becomes very gloomy and sad, and the author is trying to express the characters sadness. The character in "Stopping by Woods in a Snowy Evening" is a very old fashioned person because he is with a horse and rides his horse through the woods. "My little horse must think it queer. To stop without a farmhouse near – Between the woods and frozen lake" shows how even his horse is surprised to be stopping in the middle of the woods where there is no livelihood. It is very unusual even for the horse to stop at this hour of the night because they should be trying to get home as soon as possible since it is already dark. "He gives his harness bells a shake. To ask if there is some mistake." express how the horse is also very attentive about what is going on around him and his master's unusual behavior. The horse tries to confirm with the character whether or not they have stopped in the right place. "I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet. When far away an interrupted cry. Came over houses from another street. But not to call me back or say good–bye," from "Acquainted With the Night" shows that the character is looking for a sign for him to look back but it was not ... Photons from the light excite electrons in the accessory pigments in the leaves which then causes them to eventually transfer their energy to the chlorophyll a molecule in the reaction center which causes an electron to jump to a primary electron acceptor, thus moving the energy along. When this electron jumps, the photolysis of water occurs in order fill the electron hole in the chlorophyll a molecules. H2O splits into electrons, H+ ions, and oxygen. Therefore measuring the percentage of O2 in the container will be measuring the rate of photosynthesis. As there was no increase in the amount of O2, this would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For this lab, we used blue and red filters over the lights which, when measured, ended up having a maximum emission for the blue filter of 491 nm while the red was 667 nm. Most red wavelengths have a wavelength of 622 to 780 nm while blue wavelengths range from 455 to 492 nm ("Wavelength"). Moreover, "spinach photosynthetic pigment absorbed light optimally between wavelengths of 400 nm and 450 nm and also at 650 nm" (Lederer). This means that the blue wavelengths (being at 491 nm) were 41 nm higher that the optimally absorbed wavelengths. On the other hand, the red wavelengths of the filter were only 17 nm over 650 nm and therefore were much closer to the optimal absorbed light. The shorter distance between the red wavelengths shows that the red filter was closest to the wavelength that spinach would get the most out of. The blue wavelength was too far off from the optimal wavelength so it did not do as much for its spinach leaves. This is why the red wavelengths may have increased the rate of photosynthesis over the blue ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The answer is physics. Physics is in every sunset and makes the sunset the way it is. The first change you see when viewing this stunning phenomenon–taking place is the coloration of the sun. According to the physics of sunsets, "On an airless world like the Moon, the Sun at sunset would look no different than at any other time" (Ethan, 2013). In reality, we are not in an airless world and our atmosphere is what makes the sunsets so spectacular and looking nothing like the sun at all when it sets. In order to reach our eyes, the sun needs an immense amount of light to pass through our atmosphere. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To our eyes, sunsets often appear reddish in color in their final stages which is all based on wavelengths; "As the sun drops towards the horizon, it progressively loses violets and blues, then greens and yellows, and finally even the oranges, leaving only the reds behind" (Ethan, 2013). High frequency waves, or the GBIV of ROYGBIV, are scattered more easily through our atmosphere. This is in comparison to the low frequency waves, or the ROY of ROYGBIV. If the sunset appears red why does the sky appear blue? The BIV end of the spectrum that is being scattered throughout our atmosphere is illuminating the sky making it appear blue to our eyes. Left on the visible spectrum fro sunsets are the low frequency wavelengths. Light is scattered quickly and all depends on can change depending on where you are in the atmosphere. It is no coincidence the sunset often looks the same on nights that has similar weather. Also, it is no coincidence that sunsets often look the same depending on where you are in the world. Although we may think were seeing the sunset as we snap a picture, the sun has already technically ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Food Photography Techniques for Capturing Minimalist Cooking By Steve A Wolfe | Submitted On August 10, 2010 Recommend Article Article Comments Print Article Share this article on Facebook Share this article on Twitter Share this article on Google+ Share this article on Linkedin Share this article on StumbleUpon Share this article on Delicious Share this article on Digg Share this article on Reddit Share this article on Pinterest Expert Author Steve A Wolfe The rise of minimalist cooking is changing the art of food photography. The following is a look at some of the techniques adopted by photographers to capture the simplicity and the spirit of this modern cuisine. Whether it is because of the recession or a genuine desire to downsize and simplify, minimalist cooking has become extremely popular. Everything from expensive and hard to acquire ingredients to rarely used, specialized utensils and equipment have been pared back to the bare minimum. Less is definitely more. Many photographers have noticed this change, either consciously or intuitively and are evolving and adapting their techniques to suit. The old sumptuous saturated glistening overfilled image just doesn 't seem to be a good match for this new approach to cooking and food in general. The photographers who get this and have a feel for the subject have started to utilize a few specific techniques which serve to emphasize the subject matter but in a much more understated way and this article will lay out ... • 74. The Dividing Line In 'All The Light We Cannot See' The Dividing Line "Man is born pure, it is society that corrupts." These are the words of French philosopher Jean–Jacques Rousseau, an Enlightened thinker in the eighteenth century. He believed that by nature people were good, but altered and depraved by culture. The shift between good and bad, light and dark, is also prevalent in Anthony Doerr's novel, All the Light We Cannot See, which follows the story of Werner Pfennig and Marie–Laure LeBlanc. Both characters are born with a lightness that is innocent and pure, but are challenged by the societies they are born in. Marie–Laure is a sixteen year old French girl who is blind, and although she can no longer see the light of the world, she is the only character who still embodies the same innocent lightness she did as a child. Her childhood was spent soaking up the good rays of her Father's love. Unbeknownst to her that an evil darkness surrounds her, but he protects from the pain going on in the world. While fleeing their apartment in Saint–Malo, he takes her to a "hotel," which was an abandoned barn (110). She is oblivious of the conditions, "her expression is faraway. Lost..." (110). Her lost expression shows how Marie–Laure's perception of the world is adrift in a sea of distorted truth. She knows of the war going on outside her window, but unaware ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Light and dark. Good and bad. These are the fundamentals characteristics that drive people. It is a balancing act, but it is also human nature for there to be instability. The weight of light and dark become disproportional and confused. For some, like Marie–Laure, the light will outshine the dark, the good overcomes the bad, and love defeats war. Whereas, those who are more like Werner where the darkness extinguishes the light and everything that was good, their outcome is very different. Humans will always be at a "state of war" with themselves, battling their way through life. Only those who recognize the light, even when they cannot see it, will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 76. Personal Narrative: A Can Of Darkness A Can of Darkness Are you afraid of the dark? This is a question asked many years ago during an object lesson for a children's church sermon. The object was a tennis ball canister with black construction paper wrapped around it and a label. The label stated, can of darkness. I told the children to get ready, because when the can of darkness is opened, darkness would fill the whole room. The children counted one, two, three, go! As the lid was removed, darkness did not fill the room. I began to shake the can upside down, and still no darkness. The room was still filled with the same amount of light. Instead, light entered the can, chased away all the darkness and we could see the inside the can of darkness. The object lesson helped to explain the scripture "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it" (John 1:5 NIV). Both the spiritual lesson and the physics lesson are important concepts for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Several individuals experienced death as a result of the horrible act. But death cannot remove all the light spread by the lives of the deceased. The messages of love, the picnic with family, the brave courageous acts of sacrifice were all a part of the very same day of the attack. All, are a testimony of their determination to love others more than their own life. I do not know with certainly the spiritual beliefs of the victims or the shooter, but it appears that a spiritual chasm exists between the two. In the book of Joshua, scripture compels readers... And if it seems evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD (Joshua 24:15 King James Version). This scripture indicates all individuals have the opportunity to choose whom to serve. Choices determine the outcome of one's life and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Refraction Lab There are various components to optics. A few of these components include refraction, index of refraction, refractive index of a material, critical angle and total internal refraction. Refraction is the bending of light when it moves from one material to another. Next, the index of refraction or refractive index, is a number that tells how the speed of light in space compares with the speed of light in a given substance. For example the refractive index of water is 1.33. The critical angle is the angle of incidence that results in an angle of refraction of 90°. Lastly, total internal refraction is when the angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle. Use a ruler to draw a 15 cm horizontal line in the middle of a blank sheet of paper. Use a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Place the semi–circular container full of water under the horizontal line. Flat side lined up with the horizontal line. Aline the exact middle of the prism with the vertical line. Use the ray box to shine a ray through the rounded side of the prism right to the center of the two lines. Keep the light ray aimed at the center and change the angle of the ray box until the refracted ray is in line with the horizontal line. Mark where the light exiting the ray box hits the prism. Use a ruler to connect the mark to the center of the two lines. Measure the angle from the vertical line to the angle drawn. This is the critical angle. Record on diagram. The experimentally determined refractive index of water was 1.3460. The percent error was 1%. One reason the experimental value was different from the accepted value is because the light ray from the ray box had a width, causing the marking to not be perfectly centered in the ray. Another reason the experimental value was different from the accepted value is because the semi–circular container was not secured allowing movement between angles. The change of location of the container would alter the angles ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
