Rabindranath Tagore
R. Tagore (7 May 1861- 7 August 1941) was a Bengali
Polymath. (Lubet)
Reshaped Bengali literature and music as well as Indian
art with contextual modernism. (Lubet)
First Non- European and First lyricist to win Nobel
Prize in Literature in 1913 (“Rabindranath Tagore – Facts - NobelPrize.org”)
‘The Bard of Bengal’ (Stern)
The Home and The World
Ghare Baire (1916) a Bengali novel.
Translated by Surendranath Tagore in 1919
(The Home and The World)(“Rabindranath Tagore”)
Illustrates Tagore’s own battle between the ideas of western culture and
revolution against western culture
Set in 20th century India; Swadeshi movement in response to 1905 Partition
of Bengal by Viceroy Lord Curzon
Nikhilesh- rational and opposes violence
Sandip- stands nothing in a way to reach his goals
Bimala- Traditional female
Is Tagore’s message
in ‘The Home and
The World’ still true
for the time?
Concerning the blindness of national ambition:
The Home and the World- Tagore's views on the dangers of political extremism.
The novel focuses on the swadeshi movement in Bengal, which demanded an
exclusive reliance on Indian-made goods, and a rejection of all foreign-made
products. (Atkinson)
"aflood,breakingdownthedykesandsweepingallourprudenceandfearbeforeit."(Tagore)
"The last sun of the century sets amidst the blood-red
clouds of the West and the whirlwind of hatred. The
naked passion of self-love of Nations, in its drunken
delirium of greed, is dancing to the clash of steel and
the howling verses of vengeance." (Tagore)
The struggle between Nikhil and Sandip for Bimala is a battle for the future of Bengal,
representing two opposing visions for Bengal. (Atkinson)
Nikhil and Sandip share the same goal: freedom from oppression. (Atkinson)
Bimala is caught between the two men.
She is seduced by Sandip's cause, although in her mind the exact nature of the cause is
never clear; The freedom she thought Sandip represented is reduced to "a dried-up
water course with all its rocks and pebbles laid bare".
enlightened
humanist.
truth cannot be imposed;
freedom is necessary for
choice, and is critical to
individual growth and
fulfillment.(Atkinson)
he looks to serve a
greater cause than
mere national
interest. (Atkinson)
“To worship my country as a god is to bring a curse upon it”(Tagore 29)
To be motivated by concern for
nation is self-destructive.
'To tyrannize for the country," he
says, "is to tyrannize over the
country" (Tagore 109)
Nikhil’ s relationship with Bimala,
which is characterized by a strong
undertow of sensuality, but never to
the extent that it becomes obtrusive.
The same can be said of Nikhil's love
of country, which is important only as
it allows for the freedom and growth of
each individual. (Atkinson)
represents himself as a realist.
one who brutally confronts the
world.
recognizes his flaws Rather
than confronting, perversely
chooses to ignore them.
reduces sensuality to
unfeeling sexuality, and
love of country to
destructive anarchy.
Sandip stops at nothing to achieve his ends.
"whenever an individual or nation becomes
incapable of perpetrating injustice it is swept into
the dustbin of the world". (Tagore 79)
Sandip is an extremist-
everything of the old order
must be destroyed for a new
order to take its place, and
his assumption that the
power which he represents
is unstoppable.
Sandip stops at nothing
to achieve his ends.
Complete irrelevance of
moral standards
the end justifies the means; any
human action can be excused if
the stakes are sufficiently high.
"Nature surrenders herself,"
he indicates, but only to the
robber. For she delights in
this forceful desire". (Tagore 45)
(Atkinson)
The Home and the World is pivotal in Tagore's rejection of mass action as a force
destructive to freedom and individuality.
The message of The Home and the World is clear: to deny distinctiveness and
individuality is to deny diversity, and to ignore the fundamental nature of the world.
For Tagore, boundaries, political or otherwise, are symptomatic of the human desire
to limit the world to what the self, rooted in ego-centeredness, can comprehend.
Sandip might claim he is fighting for a cause, but it is also clear that his own ego is
what drives him forward.
Tagore views the human desire to define the world as a dogmatic assertion of
ignorance. Virtually everything we do is an expression of this dogmatism, a
manifestation of the ego-centeredness that drives it.
He recognizes that the pride that comes with nationhood can only lead to arrogance and to
the repression of others. His message was true for his time.
(Atkinson)

The Home and The World: A Call for a New World Order

  • 2. I am Jheel Barad Roll No.: 12 Enrollment no.: 4069206420210003 Sem.: 3 (M.A.) Paper no.: 201 Paper code: 22406 Paper name: Indian English Literature (Pre- Independence) Topic: The Home and The World: A Call for a New World Order Submitted to: Smt S.B. Gardi, Department of English, M.K.B.U E-mail: jheelbarad@gmail.com
  • 3. Rabindranath Tagore R. Tagore (7 May 1861- 7 August 1941) was a Bengali Polymath. (Lubet) Reshaped Bengali literature and music as well as Indian art with contextual modernism. (Lubet) First Non- European and First lyricist to win Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 (“Rabindranath Tagore – Facts - NobelPrize.org”) ‘The Bard of Bengal’ (Stern)
  • 4. The Home and The World Ghare Baire (1916) a Bengali novel. Translated by Surendranath Tagore in 1919 (The Home and The World)(“Rabindranath Tagore”) Illustrates Tagore’s own battle between the ideas of western culture and revolution against western culture Set in 20th century India; Swadeshi movement in response to 1905 Partition of Bengal by Viceroy Lord Curzon Nikhilesh- rational and opposes violence Sandip- stands nothing in a way to reach his goals Bimala- Traditional female
  • 5. Is Tagore’s message in ‘The Home and The World’ still true for the time?
  • 6. Concerning the blindness of national ambition: The Home and the World- Tagore's views on the dangers of political extremism. The novel focuses on the swadeshi movement in Bengal, which demanded an exclusive reliance on Indian-made goods, and a rejection of all foreign-made products. (Atkinson) "aflood, breakingdownthedykesandsweepingallourprudenceandfearbeforeit."(Tagore) "The last sun of the century sets amidst the blood-red clouds of the West and the whirlwind of hatred. The naked passion of self-love of Nations, in its drunken delirium of greed, is dancing to the clash of steel and the howling verses of vengeance." (Tagore)
  • 7. The struggle between Nikhil and Sandip for Bimala is a battle for the future of Bengal, representing two opposing visions for Bengal. (Atkinson) Nikhil and Sandip share the same goal: freedom from oppression. (Atkinson) Bimala is caught between the two men. She is seduced by Sandip's cause, although in her mind the exact nature of the cause is never clear; The freedom she thought Sandip represented is reduced to "a dried-up water course with all its rocks and pebbles laid bare".
  • 8. enlightened humanist. truth cannot be imposed; freedom is necessary for choice, and is critical to individual growth and fulfillment.(Atkinson) he looks to serve a greater cause than mere national interest. (Atkinson) “To worship my country as a god is to bring a curse upon it”(Tagore 29) To be motivated by concern for nation is self-destructive. 'To tyrannize for the country," he says, "is to tyrannize over the country" (Tagore 109) Nikhil’ s relationship with Bimala, which is characterized by a strong undertow of sensuality, but never to the extent that it becomes obtrusive. The same can be said of Nikhil's love of country, which is important only as it allows for the freedom and growth of each individual. (Atkinson)
  • 9. represents himself as a realist. one who brutally confronts the world. recognizes his flaws Rather than confronting, perversely chooses to ignore them. reduces sensuality to unfeeling sexuality, and love of country to destructive anarchy. Sandip stops at nothing to achieve his ends. "whenever an individual or nation becomes incapable of perpetrating injustice it is swept into the dustbin of the world". (Tagore 79) Sandip is an extremist- everything of the old order must be destroyed for a new order to take its place, and his assumption that the power which he represents is unstoppable. Sandip stops at nothing to achieve his ends. Complete irrelevance of moral standards the end justifies the means; any human action can be excused if the stakes are sufficiently high. "Nature surrenders herself," he indicates, but only to the robber. For she delights in this forceful desire". (Tagore 45) (Atkinson)
  • 10. The Home and the World is pivotal in Tagore's rejection of mass action as a force destructive to freedom and individuality. The message of The Home and the World is clear: to deny distinctiveness and individuality is to deny diversity, and to ignore the fundamental nature of the world. For Tagore, boundaries, political or otherwise, are symptomatic of the human desire to limit the world to what the self, rooted in ego-centeredness, can comprehend. Sandip might claim he is fighting for a cause, but it is also clear that his own ego is what drives him forward. Tagore views the human desire to define the world as a dogmatic assertion of ignorance. Virtually everything we do is an expression of this dogmatism, a manifestation of the ego-centeredness that drives it. He recognizes that the pride that comes with nationhood can only lead to arrogance and to the repression of others. His message was true for his time. (Atkinson)

Boycotting films- India’s Daughter, Laal Singh Chadda (“Delhi High Court refuses to lift ban on BBC documentary 'India's Daughter'”) (“Hindu nationalists push boycott of Bollywood 'Forrest Gump' remake”) Forced Sterilization practice (“India's dark history of sterilisation”) Harvard VS Hard Work (“Hard work more powerful than Harvard: PM Narendra Modi”) Construction of dams for welfare of nation- migration of native and death of aquatic life Nation first vs People First
