Native American reservations were created for several reasons, including to control Native American tribes and force assimilation. The Dawes Act of 1887 broke up tribal lands and opened reservations to settlement. The Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 reversed this policy and increased tribal sovereignty, but reservations still face many social and economic problems today.
