Native American Reservations Today face severe health, economic, and cultural challenges. Mortality rates are extremely high, with men living to only 44 years of age on average and infant mortality three times the national rate. Poverty is also widespread, with 97% living below the poverty line and many lacking basic utilities. Housing conditions are poor as well, with high occupancy rates and mold issues in most homes. Alcoholism and drug abuse have also had devastating impacts, affecting 9 in 10 families. The Lakota language and culture are severely threatened, with only 14% still speaking the language fluently.
