Definition of The Grammar
Translation Method
This is a learning method that usually used to teach
grammar with principle characteristic focus on translation
and memorize verbs, when teacher teaches usually explain the
material with native language or mother tongue so students
can easily understand the instruction or explanation from
teacher. Reading and writing are the primary skills students
develop in this method, moreover translation activities will
supply student’s simplicity and they will have the opportunity
to improve correctness in the target language.
According to Fish (2003), “when students can
cover form and meaning their language
awareness will raise, and they will enhance their
abilities to study independently”.
The main characteristic of the grammar-translation
method is exactly as their names propose a focus on
learning the rules of grammar and their submissions in
translating passage from one language into the other.
Vocabulary in the target language is learned through
direct translating from the native language. The rule
of teacher is the authority for the student in the
classroom.
There are some methods in grammar-translation
method: translation of the text, comprehension
of questions, antonyms/synonyms, deductive
applications of rules, fills in the blanks,
memorizations, making sentences, composition.
Advantages of The Grammar
Translation Method
1. The translation is the easiest and shortest way of explanation meaning of
words and phrases.
2. Good for language learners to identify some structures of two languages,
and some of the learners study the target language very well by this
method.
3. Can improve the learner’s reading abilities greatly.
4. Almost nothing misunderstanding.
5. Learners have no difficulties to understand the lesson
6. Save energy (labor-saving method)
Disadvantages of The Grammar
