I want to give an overview of the crisis of our cities as I see it. The city I focus on is Melbourne, where I live. But I doubt that the broad situation is much different in the other states.
Modern cities are "free-fire" zones for the corporations. And the situation is getting worse. We can't work out what to do without understanding this basic reality.

The future of work
Money is losing its place as the main motivator to go to work. Companies in high tech sectors are first in realising that their employees are choosing them instead of the other way around. This change in workplace dynamics is causing an tantalising view into the future.
Companies are looking at alternative ways to get and keep their employees. For these employees the traditional corporate quest for profit is no longer enough. They need to have an impact on the environment around them. And this impact is changing the world in an ever increasing pace.
Those who are no longer purely driven by financial gain are now creating the building blocks for an entire economy in which money no longer has value. As we proceed towards this post scarcity economy, the next generation of companies is actively trying to answer the question: what is the future of work?

Union of Humans: The Future of the Millennial Generation in the Age of Automa...
It’s not always fun or easy to understand an automating, fissuring, hyper-globalizing economy. It’s not always comfortable to consider that decades-old safe and sage advice (“Go to college!”) might become totally obsolete—if we don’t move quickly to curtail the privatization of our primary schools, and/or colleges fail to modernize their offerings.
However with great crisis comes great opportunity, and Millennials are well-equipped to handle the mammoth issues before them. They are, after all, the most educated, most connected generation in American history.
So why the emphasis on…unions? Well, we really need them, and Millennials happen to love them. But the automation era will require its own union, of sorts—what we’re calling a “union of humans.”

No road to very cheap energy
1. A world with very cheap, abundant energy sources is not compatible with the current private, for-profit economy and system of power and control.
2. If a new energy source allowed unlimited access to energy at low cost, it would collapse stock markets, the banking system, and concentrate power as profit could no longer be extracted and controlled.
3. Society would rebuild in a decentralized, peer-to-peer manner without the ability to concentrate power through profit. This would require evolution of political systems toward direct democracy.

No road to very cheap energy
1. A world with very cheap, abundant energy sources is not compatible with the current private, for-profit economy and system of power and control.
2. If a new energy source allowed unlimited access to energy at low cost, it would collapse stock markets, the banking system, and concentrate power as profit could no longer be extracted and controlled.
3. Society would rebuild in a decentralized, peer-to-peer manner without the ability to concentrate power through profit. This would require evolution of political systems toward direct democracy.

Metrics of success need to shift from extractive and finite to regenerative, thriving and prioritizing humans. An impact business culture revolution is needed to positively impact many people.
