The Progressive Movement aimed to give more control of the government to ordinary citizens and guarantee economic opportunities through regulation. It differed from past social movements in using the government as a tool for reform, enhancing its power. Problems from industrialization and urbanization included poor living and working conditions, child labor, corruption influenced by the wealthy, and company towns that exploited workers. Journalists called "muckrakers" reported on these issues to raise public awareness and support reforms around labor rights, conservation, food/medicine safety, and other areas.
