considered in some
cases to be unfair, and in
truth, sometimes it is.
You cannot assume any
one individual type, such
as entrepreneurs, is a
certain way.
DON’T ASSUME
that just because someone
belongs to a group that is known
to have specific stereotypical
characteristics…
That they are all the same!
INSTEAD…
There is often a common
characteristic that usually
defines a specific group of
people. The operative word
is “usually”.
There are always
exceptions.
Entrepreneurs tend to
share common
personality attributes
that are often double-
edged swords.
Below are some common
characteristics of entrepreneurs…
Including
How one attribute can be
both positive and negative at
the same time.
Entrepreneurs
Have a Strong
Sense of Urgency
Entrepreneurs Thrive
on Activity
They are enthusiastic about
developing and implementing
their ideas.
Entrepreneurs are creative.
they can also be impatient,
intolerant, tense, and uneasy
when others do not share the
same sense of urgency.
BUT…
Or, if others do not respond as
quickly as the entrepreneur wants
them to.
Entrepreneurs
Have a High Level
of Intelligence
Entrepreneurs are
extremely knowledgeable in
their area of expertise.
They must be to run their
business successfully.
However, sometimes this high
level of intelligence does not
correlate with other important
aspects of running a successful
business.
For example, many
entrepreneurs lack
effective communication
skills which can result in
poor customer service.
Entrepreneurs are
Autonomous
Many entrepreneurs do not
function well in structured
organizations. They don’t
like to be constrained by
strict company-specific
rules and regulations.
Especially protocol that
involves having to answer to
an authority figure other than
themselves.
Most believe they can do the job
better than anyone else. They
have a strong need to do things
their OWN way.
they are not always
able to communicate
these ideas clearly
for anyone to be
able to execute
them effectively.
HOWEVER…
They can become extremely
intolerant and impatient if
their employees are unable to
read their minds.
Entrepreneurs know exactly what they want.
Entrepreneurs Have
Self Confidence
They must be confident to
think they can make it in the
business world.
But when that self-confidence
steps over the boundary into
arrogance, there could be
some negative consequences.
Arrogant people do not consider anyone else’s ideas to
have value because they know best.
They are challenging to work
with and inflexible because it is
their way or the highway.
Entrepreneurs Have
Interpersonal
Relationship Issues
“Work – work – work” – that
is the entrepreneur’s mantra.
They are overachievers who
never find enough hours in
the day to get their work
done.
Their strong work ethic frequently
interferes with their personal
relationships and their
interpersonal skills.
Entrepreneurs are
single-minded when it
comes to their business.
They will do whatever
they have to do to be
successful. And they
expect everyone who
works for them to do
the same.
Needless-to-say, personal relationships
often suffer when all one does is work.
Also, many entrepreneurs have lousy
people skills. They are often more
concerned with what their employees
accomplish rather than how they are
feeling.
This insensitivity and
lack of empathy are not
received well by the
entrepreneur’s
employees.
Entrepreneurs
Need to Control
This is usually the
primary reason people
become entrepreneurs.
They are risk-takers
whose primary
motivation is growth.
Coupled with high intelligence
levels, strong work ethic, lots of
confidence, and a strong sense of
urgency, the entrepreneur’s need
to control can be highly effective.
But, their lack of empathy,
inability to delegate, and
intolerance may have negative
consequences.
Entrepreneurs Are
Goal-Oriented
Success is the goal of the entrepreneur. Sometimes, it is
success at any price. Success is the only acceptable result.
Many entrepreneurs do
not have managerial
experience. They are,
therefore, unable to
mentor subordinates
effectively to foster a
team spirit.
This can lead to
dissatisfaction and
frustration on the
part of the employee.
The very characteristics that can lead to the
entrepreneur’s success might also lead to
failure in other areas of life.

The Entrepreneurial Dichotomy

  • 1.
  • 2. Stereotyping might be considered in some cases to be unfair, and in truth, sometimes it is. You cannot assume any one individual type, such as entrepreneurs, is a certain way.
  • 3. DON’T ASSUME that just because someone belongs to a group that is known to have specific stereotypical characteristics… That they are all the same!
  • 4. INSTEAD… There is often a common characteristic that usually defines a specific group of people. The operative word is “usually”.
  • 5. There are always exceptions. Entrepreneurs tend to share common personality attributes that are often double- edged swords.
  • 6. Below are some common characteristics of entrepreneurs… Including How one attribute can be both positive and negative at the same time.
  • 8. Entrepreneurs Thrive on Activity They are enthusiastic about developing and implementing their ideas. Entrepreneurs are creative.
  • 9. they can also be impatient, intolerant, tense, and uneasy when others do not share the same sense of urgency. BUT… Or, if others do not respond as quickly as the entrepreneur wants them to.
  • 10. Entrepreneurs Have a High Level of Intelligence
  • 11. Entrepreneurs are extremely knowledgeable in their area of expertise. They must be to run their business successfully.
  • 12. However, sometimes this high level of intelligence does not correlate with other important aspects of running a successful business.
  • 13. For example, many entrepreneurs lack effective communication skills which can result in poor customer service.
  • 15. Many entrepreneurs do not function well in structured organizations. They don’t like to be constrained by strict company-specific rules and regulations.
  • 16. Especially protocol that involves having to answer to an authority figure other than themselves. Most believe they can do the job better than anyone else. They have a strong need to do things their OWN way.
  • 17. they are not always able to communicate these ideas clearly for anyone to be able to execute them effectively. HOWEVER…
  • 18. They can become extremely intolerant and impatient if their employees are unable to read their minds. Entrepreneurs know exactly what they want.
  • 19. Entrepreneurs Have Self Confidence They must be confident to think they can make it in the business world.
  • 20. But when that self-confidence steps over the boundary into arrogance, there could be some negative consequences.
  • 21. Arrogant people do not consider anyone else’s ideas to have value because they know best. They are challenging to work with and inflexible because it is their way or the highway.
  • 23. “Work – work – work” – that is the entrepreneur’s mantra. They are overachievers who never find enough hours in the day to get their work done. Their strong work ethic frequently interferes with their personal relationships and their interpersonal skills.
  • 24. Entrepreneurs are single-minded when it comes to their business. They will do whatever they have to do to be successful. And they expect everyone who works for them to do the same.
  • 25. Needless-to-say, personal relationships often suffer when all one does is work. Also, many entrepreneurs have lousy people skills. They are often more concerned with what their employees accomplish rather than how they are feeling.
  • 26. This insensitivity and lack of empathy are not received well by the entrepreneur’s employees.
  • 28. This is usually the primary reason people become entrepreneurs. They are risk-takers whose primary motivation is growth.
  • 29. Coupled with high intelligence levels, strong work ethic, lots of confidence, and a strong sense of urgency, the entrepreneur’s need to control can be highly effective.
  • 30. But, their lack of empathy, inability to delegate, and intolerance may have negative consequences.
  • 32. Success is the goal of the entrepreneur. Sometimes, it is success at any price. Success is the only acceptable result. Many entrepreneurs do not have managerial experience. They are, therefore, unable to mentor subordinates effectively to foster a team spirit.
  • 33. This can lead to dissatisfaction and frustration on the part of the employee.
  • 34. The very characteristics that can lead to the entrepreneur’s success might also lead to failure in other areas of life.
