This study investigated the effectiveness of experience and nature-based learning activities in enhancing college students’ environmental attitude. It employed pre-test-post-test experimental research design. The participants were the class of fifty-three college students of a higher education institution in Region 2, Philippines. Seven learning activities were employed by the researcher namely pamphlets making, environmental-themed movie poster making, collage making, miniature plant exhibit, vegetable gardening, community clean-up service, recycled art crafts making, and tree planting drive. In like manner, the pre-attitude score and post-attitude scores in the standardize environmental attitude inventory test were compared and the significant differences were determined using paired sample t-test. Results of the study revealed that the different experience-based learning activities were generally rated interesting. Moreover, it was also revealed that the different learning activities significantly increased the environmental attitude of the students towards nature enjoyment, support for interventions and conservation policies environmental movement activism, conservation motivated by anthropocentric concern, confidence in science and technology, environmental threat, altering nature, personal conservation behavior, human dominance over nature, human utilization of nature, and ecocentric concern. This implies that allowing students to be exposed to the different environmental learning activities where direct learning experience is involved significantly increased students environmental construct.

Biology learning, especially the topic of plant physiology, requires Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). This ability needs to be improved with HOTS based teaching materials. The teaching materials, however, have not been developed, especially those in plant physiology topic. Students’ HOTS in biology learning still requires an improvement as HOTS is important for the 21st century. One alternative that can be developed is teaching materials in the form of an E-Supplement Book Based on Plant Physiology Research (ESPPRe). The purpose of this study was to measure students’ HOTS related to the concept of plant physiology as the basis for developing ESPPRe. The method used was descriptive using a survey technique. The instrument used in this study amounted to 10 items distributed using Google form. The results indicated that the scores were categorized as low for all students (40.81) with male students (41.39) and
female students (40.74). This suggested that the HOTS score still needs to be improved and it is necessary to develop ESPPRe in further research. The content on the ESPPRe media that must be developed is related to activities to analyze and criticize problems that have been presented in ESPPRe. Next, students are expected to be able to create solutions and ideas related to these problems. The development of various learning media will make students happier in learning. This is because HOTS-based learning implementation will be varied. This study concludes that the HOTS score is still in the low category and the ESPPRe can be developed in subsequent studies. Suggestion from this research is to be able to implement the book to improve students' abilities to solve problems.

In the present work and attempt has been made to study the awareness of secondary school students regarding the environment around them. Cause of environmental degradation and about the remedial measures which can be taken to preserve the environment with the help of questionnaire, review of literature reveals that the studies of this nature are very rare. This work, therefore assumes more significance. It will also help in providing suggestions to the planners with the regards to the modifications which are needed in the curriculum. So as, to increase the awareness of the students in those areas where they are less aware or lack awareness.

This research was conducted on students at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UNS Surakarta. Considering the seriousness of the problem only inclusion in Constitution will not help a lot in preserving our environment, but the issue should be initiated at the grass root level i.e. in family, school and society. In the changing scenario of our society attitude of an individual are greatly affected by family, teachers, school environment, teaching methods, learning styles and many other factors and they all have a great impact on the personality development of the child. It is well accepted fact that healthy family environment, co-operative learning and environmental education can help a lot in the development of positive desirable attitude towards environment among future citizens.

The Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, a premier university in La Union is currently recognized as the most eco-friendly and sustainable campus in Region 1. One of its major thrusts is to be acknowledged as the most eco-friendly and sustainable school in the country. Being recognized as " eco-friendly " gives us an idea of the kind of environment the campus is offering: ecologically sound, peaceful, biodiverse, and environmentally harmonious as it caters the need of its stakeholders in terms of instruction, research and extension. This research was conducted to keep its current status in check and to empower its stakeholders. The study involved the parents as one of the major stakeholders which has contributed and will further fortify the campus " thrust of being eco-friendly. The attitudes of the parents towards the environment were determined together with the familiarity and perspectives regarding environmental education as grouped according to gender, age and work status. It was found that majority have positive attitudes toward the environment. Likewise, they were found to be familiar and aware of the appropriate environmental education goals of the campus. Work status and age also gave significant differences in the familiarity and perspectives of parents regarding environmental education.

Today’s environmental challenges urge man to search for possible solution from wider viewpoints. This paper review is persuasive that it stresses relevance of environmental education for all citizens as one of the key tools for stewardship of environmental wellbeing besides policies and actions combating against environmental problems like pollutions and environmental degradation; believing that environmental education can pose positive change in attitude and behavior of society that in turn probably support efforts done towards sustainable development. The paper also attempt to discuss rationale of this review paper, interactions between man and environment, meaning and aims of environmental education, environmental pollution, climate change, pressure on biological diversity, desertification and drought, population growth and resource use, population growth and environment, dimensions and approaches of environmental education. Developing environmental literacy- knowledge, skill, attitude and actions on current environmental challenges particularly like climate change, loss of biodiversity, health problems and suggested solutions of these problems are need commitment to be addressed. Hence, environmentally literate citizens make informed environmentally sound decisions. Further, suitable approach of delivering environmental education, for all learners, in schools or higher institutions probably is generic form.
Environmental sanitation is fundamental to health and development in schools because having healthy school environments sets schools on track for conducive and active learning. Many schools are experiencing poor environmental sanitation. The objective of this research is to review students’ perception of environmental sanitation. The method used is review of academic articles, textbooks, internet materials, thesis, journals and publicly available materials on environmental sanitation. This enabled the researchers to capture other authors view on students’ perception of environmental sanitation. Results of the review based on the convergent views of previous authors, showed that there was poor environmental sanitation practices in schools. It is therefore recommended that: (1) there is need for environmental awareness among students on the importance of environmental sanitation; (2) Provision of waste bins at strategic points, especially in all classroom buildings; (3) Inclusion of environmental education in school curriculum at all levels of the educational system; and conducting environmental sanitation on Tuesdays and Thursdays in schools on regular basis.

This research is an examination of the environmental attitude of higher secondary school teachers in relation to their gender and institution type. In the present investigation a representative sample of 250 teachers in government and private higher secondary schools was drawn from Sonitpur district of Assam. The research showed that there is no significant difference in mean scores of health and hygiene, wild life, forests, polluters and population explosion areas of environmental attitude of male and female senior secondary school teachers. Female and male higher secondary school teachers have almost same overall environmental attitude. There is no significant difference in overall environmental attitude of private and government higher secondary school teachers.
Novel Methods of Plastic Wastes Management among Students of Secondary School...Premier Publishers
Plastic wastes contribute significantly to the volume of wastes generated in secondary schools. This study aims at providing student-oriented methods of managing plastic wastes. Using a quasi- experimental study design, a 3-stage random sampling technique was used to select two secondary schools: Oritamefa Baptist Model School (O.B.M.S) and Anglican Commercial Grammar School (A.C.G.S), from which 245 students were proportionately selected. A questionnaire was used to collect data on socio-demographic characteristics, waste management practices and knowledge on appropriate management methods of plastic wastes. Also, 10-item observational checklist was used for physical characterization of wastes generated in the schools over one-month period. Descriptive statistics and student paired t-test were used for data analysis at a 5% level of significance. The mean ages were 15.8±1.8 years and 14.1±1.0 years for A.C.G.S and O.B.M.S respectively. At baseline, A.C.G.S had a greater mean knowledge score (13.3 ± 3.4) than O.B.M.S (12.5± 5.5), though not significant. After the intervention, O.B.M.S had a significantly higher mean knowledge score (15.9± 5.1) than A.C.G.S (14.6± 4.3). Proportions of plastic waste generated at O.B.M.S and A.C.G.S were 25.4% and 33.3% respectively. The student-oriented training intervention increased knowledge of craftsmanship in plastic waste management in the secondary schools.

The perceptions of the faculty members, school officials and students in terms of the implementation of the environmental education policies in the hinterlands of Northern Samar specifically in Silvino Lobos, Northern Samar were analyzed in this work. A positive response on waste reduction and management and a rejection on the use of plastics and individual bulk packaging of products from suppliers were manifested. Further perceived was the disliking of artesian well as the source of water agreed on the composting biodegradables and the segregating waste in academic institutions and proper sealing of hazardous wastes before disposal. Eight 8 environment themes were integrated in the curriculum specifically in Music, Health and Physical Education, English, Social Studies, Filipino, and Mathematics, which run counter to the non availability of a general policy on environment by the local government unit. Environmental policy must be reflected in the vision and mission of the local government unit, as the schools follow and implement certain operational standards that are environment friendly, and integrate environmental education in most of the subjects. Environmental protection awareness refers to the understanding of environmental issues and the
importance of preserving the environment. It involves recognizing the impact of our actions on the
environment and the need for sustainable practices. The objective of this study is to investigate the
impact of environmental protection awareness interventions and strategies, considering locality and
media influence, on the environmental attitude of secondary school students. The study adopted a single
group pre and post-test experimental design method. In this study, a purposive sampling method was
used, selecting a focused group of 50 students from St. Joseph’s Matriculation School in Dindigul. This
study utilized various statistical techniques, including mean and standard deviation calculations for
dataset analysis. The t-test was used for comparing pre and post intervention scores, and percentage
analysis was conducted for understanding attitude changes. The study found that the environmental
education intervention positively influenced secondary school students' environmental attitude. After the
intervention, there was an overall increase in environmental attitude scores, indicating voluntary
participation in environmental activities, sharing of environmental knowledge, and preference for
environmentally-friendly products.

In view of this, the main aim is to assess the role of academic eco clubs to execution of national policies on environmental awareness among the college students. The required data and information is collected through various sources such as published books, journals, unpublished research thesis and online articles with the observations. The national policies and role of academic eco clubs in awareness and preservation of environment are objectively elaborated. With the consideration of the severity of the environment related problems the author tried to suggest the suitable remedies for the environmental awareness and sustainable development.
Implementation of Environmental Education Policies in the Hinterlands of Nort...ijtsrd
The perceptions of the faculty members, school officials and students in terms of the implementation of the environmental education policies in the hinterlands of Northern Samar specifically in Silvino Lobos, Northern Samar were analyzed in this work. A positive response on waste reduction and management and a rejection on the use of plastics and individual bulk packaging of products from suppliers were manifested. Further perceived was the disliking of artesian well as the source of water agreed on the composting biodegradables and the segregating waste in academic institutions and proper sealing of hazardous wastes before disposal. Eight 8 environment themes were integrated in the curriculum specifically in Music, Health and Physical Education, English, Social Studies, Filipino, and Mathematics, which run counter to the non availability of a general policy on environment by the local government unit. Environmental policy must be reflected in the vision and mission of the local government unit, as the schools follow and implement certain operational standards that are environment friendly, and integrate environmental education in most of the subjects. Environmental protection awareness refers to the understanding of environmental issues and the
importance of preserving the environment. It involves recognizing the impact of our actions on the
environment and the need for sustainable practices. The objective of this study is to investigate the
impact of environmental protection awareness interventions and strategies, considering locality and
media influence, on the environmental attitude of secondary school students. The study adopted a single
group pre and post-test experimental design method. In this study, a purposive sampling method was
used, selecting a focused group of 50 students from St. Joseph’s Matriculation School in Dindigul. This
study utilized various statistical techniques, including mean and standard deviation calculations for
dataset analysis. The t-test was used for comparing pre and post intervention scores, and percentage
analysis was conducted for understanding attitude changes. The study found that the environmental
education intervention positively influenced secondary school students' environmental attitude. After the
intervention, there was an overall increase in environmental attitude scores, indicating voluntary
participation in environmental activities, sharing of environmental knowledge, and preference for
environmentally-friendly products.
Green Consumerism in Environmental Learning: 7th-grade Students ProEnvironmen...Md. Mehadi Rahman
Science education in the 21st century including biology learning at the level of Junior High School requires a more contextual implementation. Environmental learning topics such as green consumerism is a contextual topic in biology learning. Students must have high Pro-Environmental Behavior (PEB) to participate in protecting the environment. The purpose of this study was to measure the PEB of students at the 7th-grade level. The research method used descriptive with survey data collection techniques. The study was conducted in November-December 2018 at State Junior High School 1 South Tambun, West Java, Indonesia. A total sample of 135 students in 7th grade was selected by simple random sampling. The results showed there were six PEB indicators based on Green Consumerism that were Energy Conservation (86.37), Transportation (56.67), Waste Avoidance (53.04), Daily Consumption (64.44), Recycling (58.89), Social Behavior (60.54). Among the six indicators, only energy conservation was categorized as very high, while the others are categorized as moderate. This study concluded that PEB students must be improved by various models, methods, and media in biology learning.

This study aimed to develop a valid and reliable instrument to measure undergraduate students’ responsible environmental behavior towards solid waste management. Data gathered from 418 undergraduate students provided evidence for validity and reliability of the new instrument consists of 34 behavior items on a six point Likert type scale. Results of the factor analysis with varimax rotation showed that items constituting Responsible Environmental Behavior Scale towards Solid Waste Management (REBS – SWM) were grouped under three subscales: (1) Personality factors; (2) Knowledge on action strategy; and (3) Knowledge on issues. Each item had a factor loading of 0.40 or above with its own scale and the alpha reliability coefficient for all of the three subscales was 0.81. Thus, REBS – SWM is a valid and reliable instrument that can be used in the field of environmental and science education and can be used as basis for management of wastes in school setting.

Environmental pollution by heavy metals has become a serious problem in Jakarta Bay. Mobilization of heavy metals as a result of anthropogenic activities has caused the release of heavy metals into the environment, one of which is Pb. Several methods already used to clean up the environment from these kinds of contaminants, but most of them are costly and difficult to get optimum results. In addition heavy metal pollutans in the waters are very stable and tend to be persistent. Recently, bioaccumators is an effective and affordable technological solution used to extract or remove inactive metals and metal pollutants from contaminated soil and water. This technology is environmental friendly and potentially cost effective using bivalves. These study objectives to analyzed the Pb content of three species of Jakarta Bay bivalves. The results showed that Pb content in the Eastern and Western Season bivalve tissue was significantly lowest in P. viridis (0,166 ± 0,016μg/g dan 0,161 ± 0,155μg/g) compared the Pb concentration in A. antiquata (0,264 ± 0,015μg/g dan 0,247±0,044μg/g), and M. meretrix (0,270 ± 0,016μg/g dan 0,240 ± 0,053μg/g). In this study also showed that the concentration of heavy metal Pb in the bivalve shell of P. viridis was significantly lower than that of two species (A. antiquata and M. meretrix). Pb content in the Eastern Season bivalves did not significantly different from that in the Westerrn Season. This is caused by a weather anomaly where the rainy season occurs almos throughout year of 2020. The Pb content in the bivalves shell was significantly higher than in the body tissues. It is because Pb can replace calcium ions in the formation of animal bones or bivalve shells.

Nine hundred juveniles of Archachatina marginata aged about two weeks, with an average live weight of 2.25 g with an average shell length of 20.12mm were monitored in culture for six (6) months on five types of substrates [S1 (soil collected in a cassava plantation: Manihot sp.), S2 (S1 with 10% oyster shell meal), S3 (S1 with 10% sawdust), S4 (S1 with 5% oyster shell meal and 5% sawdust) and S5 (uncultivated forest soil). Four diets including two industrial (D1 and D 2 of 12% and 16% calcium respectively) and two based on fodder (D3 and D4 based on leaves and fruit of the papaya (Carica papaya) on the one hand and a mixture of papaya leaves and taro (Xanthosoma maffafa) on the other hand, were used. In order to determine the best combinations inducing the best growth performance, 20 combinations were formed at the rate of 45 spat for each combination; three replicas of 15 spat each. This study showed that the combination of diet and livestock substrate influences the growth of Archachatina marginata. Although the best feed is D1 (74.68 g and 7.94cm) and the best substrate is S2 (77.12 g and 7.79cm), the best combinations are D2S3 (69.37 g and 7.47cm), D1S4 (74.68 g and 7.94cm and D4S2 (77.12 g and 7.79cm). The combined effect of the high level of dietary calcium and that of the culture substrate does not promote good growth of snails. This work will help improve the production of African giant snails and provide important data for anyone wishing to engage in the breeding of these animals.

No previous research has assessed the nongenetic factors, especially the nutrition status of MS patients in Arab countries. Hence, this study aims to assess the nutritional status of MS patients among Arab adults. This study is a nationally representative cross-sectional study using a structured, online self-administered, validated quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) from 13 Arab countries. All data analyses were performed using STATA 16.0 and R for statistical computing version 4.0.4. A total of 813 participants were surveyed, most of the MS participants were female (68.4%), married (58.5%), non-smoker (72.6%) and 53.3% were diagnosed with MS for up to five years. MS participants did not consume the DRI of both the macro and the micronutrients including the energy requirements, except the dietary intake of the sodium which was insignificantly different from the DRI. Results also showed that most participants rarely consumed the main food items including bread, cereals, and most types of meat. While, more than 50% of the participants consumed fruit, vegetables, all types of chicken, fish, fresh soup, rice, and egg up to 3 times per month. On the other hand, milk and milkshake were consumed rarely; while, tea and herbal teas were the most common beverages. Nutrient deficiencies are very common among MS Arab patients. The finding of this study can establish a base for the development of a nutritional program for MS patients in accordance with the recommended DRI.

Sensory evaluation or analysis is an invaluable tool in determining the consumers’ acceptability of a product developed and eventually its market success. This is a sequel test after the chemical analysis and microbiological procedures have been conducted. The study determined the level of acceptability of the by-product of Talisay (Terminalia catappa) nuts specifically; Talisay Nuts Polvoron, Glazed Talisay Nuts, and Sugar-coated Talisay Nuts using sensory evaluation as to appearance, taste, aroma, sweetness, and texture. The responses of the food inclined participants are described yielding from the Hedonic Tests conducted and statistically treated. Results concluded that the developed products are remarkably acceptable and marketable.

A germination test was carried out to identify plants that can germinate and survive in polluted soil (with and without ash) collected 2.5km east and 2.5km west, 20km west and 55km west (control) of the BCL Cu/Ni mine smelter in Selebi-Phikwe, Botswana. The experiment was carried out using Phaseolus vulgaris, Moringa oleifera and Moringa stenopetala. Soil acidity and heavy metal stress reduced germination percentage, coefficient rate of germination, root and shoot growth and dry weight, root: shoot, vigour index and tolerance index of all species. Percentage reduction followed the order 2.5km west < 20km west < 2.5km east < 55km west. Phaseolus vulgaris, Moringa oleifera and Moringa stenopetala germinated in all soils. Their ability to germinate in polluted soil indicates tolerance to heavy metal and soil acidity stress and so they have potential for use in phytoremediation of polluted soils around the mine. Phaseolus vulgaris had the highest overall germination performance but there was no significant difference between the Moringas. Application of coal fly ash increased all the germination parameters and so coal fly ash has potential for use in amending polluted soil around the mine for phytoremediation purposes.

The forests of the Congo Basin cover an area of 200 million hectares, of which just over 10% is in Gabon. In this country, crop products and non-timber forest products (NTFPs) are abundant because of its favourable climate. There is significant biodiversity and great potential for non-timber forest products. This study is interested in the identification and the supply chain of the Marantaceae, one of these NTFPs of plant origin in central Gabon, whose exploitation is national. Through a survey of the main actors in the sector and field visits in the locality of Bifoun, it emerges the existence of three large groups of exploited marantaceae, whose harvest and transport are mainly done by women, in various containers. The storage of this NTFPs does not exceed four days, with the risk of losing its commercial value due to drying out. The uses of this resource are multiple: processing cassava, cooking food, making handicrafts, etc. The income it provides to producers is mainly use towards small family expenses but helps to monetize the rural world. The difficulties inherent in the distance from harvesting points, the low price of the product and the impossibility of long-term storage of the marantaceae leaves constitute a brake on the development of this activity. It would therefore be wise to envisage the domestication of the species listed for a sustainable use of this plant genetic resource.
Ethnobotany of Oyster nut (Telfairia pedata) in Northern Tanzania | JBES 2022Innspub Net
Telfairia pedata (Sims) Hook is an important native climber plant commonly grown in East Africa. It bears nuts which are eaten either raw or cooked and is consumed mostly by expectant mothers, and as cooking oil. The survey was conducted between September 2019 to February 2020 in Sambaa, Meru, and Pare communities of Lushoto, Bumbuli, Arumeru and Same Districts, Northern Tanzania to assess the ethnobotany of T. pedata from a sample of 346 respondents using semi-structured questionnaires. Results indicate that, 21% of respondents used T. pedata for cooking with other staple foods while 18% claimed that the nuts are used by pregnant and lactating mothers for medicinal and breast milk stimulation and nine (9) percent indicated that the nuts are used for cultural and ritual purposes. Despite its importance, the cultivation of T. pedata in the study area is declining and the gap why such decline is experienced needs to be answered in further studies. Secondly, respondents within the 36-50 age groups reported the greatest diversity of uses of T. pedata 51% compared with those aged below 36 years old 21% signifying that the traditional knowledge known by younger aged groups may be declining. Thus, this gap of traditional knowledge between the groups should be addressed in order to improve utilization and conservation of this seriously declining yet important nut in the study area and other places of Tanzania.

This study reports the amphibian’s fauna sampled from the Biodiversity Conservation Area of the hydroelectric dam of Soubré city (southwestern Côte d’Ivoire). This study aims to provide a better understanding of the diversity of amphibians in this relict forest of 200 ha, in order to assess the ecological health of this ecosystem for conservation and sustainable management perspectives. During dry season (from 26 February to 4 March 2018) and rainy season (from 17 to 23 June 2018), we recorded 14 species of anurans grouped into eight genera and six families. The study sites comprise an amphibian fauna consisting mainly of savannah specialists and degraded forest (64.28% of total species richness). Based on the IUCN Red List, all species recorded are of least concern. Also, these species are well distributed in the different regions of Côte d’Ivoire and Africa. Thus, it is necessary to monitor the ecology of the species and to protect subsequently the different habitats of this area.

Dearth of well-articulated information on genetic parameter estimates and diversity of upland rice limits the genetic improvement of rice. This study assessed the genetic parameter estimates and genetic diversity among 40 rice accessions using 26 agro-morphological traits. The trial was conducted in 2020 at the Njala University experimental site using 5 × 8 triple lattice design. The agro-morphological traits were analyzed using various multivariate and genetic parameter estimate techniques. Classification based on qualitative and quantitative traits grouped the germplasm into ten and five distinct clusters, respectively. Genotypes Buttercup-ABC, Buttercup-RARC, Jewulay, NERICA L4, Ndomawai, Sewulie and Painipainie produced earliest days to heading (81.8–97.2 days) and maturity (111.2 – 120.7 days). Genotypes Jasmine (3.036 t.ha-1), Rok 34 (3.238 t.ha-1) and Parmoi (2.663 t.ha-1) exhibited the highest grain yields. Principal component analysis (PCA) of qualitative traits exhibited four principal components (PCs) with eigenvalues > 1.0 and cumulative variation of 68.04%, whilst the PCA of quantitative traits had five PCs accounting for 81.73% of the total genetic variation. The findings indicate the presence of enough variability that could be exploited for the genetic improvement of rice varieties and the studied traits can be used for selection. Leaf blade length and width, culm diameter at basal internode, culm length, days to 50% heading, flag leaf girth, panicle number per plant, grain yield, and 100 grain weight had high heritability and genetic advance indicating the presence of additive gene action. Findings are relevant for conservation, management, short term recommendation for release and genetic improvement of rice.
Valorization of the duckweed (Spirodela polyrhyza) in the feeding of mono sex...Innspub Net
In order to evaluate the effect of Spirodela polyrhiza using in diets of Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings, an experiment was conducted on the farm “Awara” in the village of Agongo in Sèmè – Kpodji during 70 days. The initial average weight of fry is about 1g. The stocking density was 13 fry / m². Three experimental diets made with local by-products were tested: T0 (0% S. polyrhiza Meal), T1 (5% S. polyrhiza Meal) and T2 (mixed feed composed of 70% T0 and 30% fresh S. polyrhiza). At the end of the experiment, the survival rate was 100% for all treatments. The best zootechnical parameters were obtained with T1 with a final average weight of 11.67 ± 2.52 g and a consumption index of 1.17 ± 0.30. The highest gross profit margin was also obtained with T1. The lowest economic profitability was obtained.

Urbanization is increasing rapidly in all parts of the world to accommodate the increasing human population but it is having a drastic effect on native flora and fauna. The present study was carried out across a three stage urbanization gradient in and around the city of Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. Observations were made from September 2019 to February 2021 at the selected three sites during COVID 19 pandemic. Point count method was used for bird surveys and Sound pressure (Noise) measurements were made across the three selected sites. The Avian diversity was measured by total species richness, Fisher’s alpha diversity index and Shannon-Wiener diversity index. The Urban centre recorded the highest sound pressure and lowest Avian species richness but as we moved away from the urban centre the noise levels reduced and the avain species richness increased towards the rural areas. This is mainly due to many avian species avoiding urban areas because of increasing noise levels. We also found that the urban bird community is dominated by a few species whereas the rural bird community was much more diverse.

This study aimed to assess the safety and health of contractors in Zamboanga Del Norte, Philip-pines, in terms of workforce, workplace, and work implements. It also aimed to evaluate compliance with occupational health and safety standards regarding occupational safety and health training, a health and safety plan, civil works activities, and heavy equipment operations. It combined quantitative research with a self-created questionnaire that explains and forecasts concepts that can be applied to other people and locations and objectively measures the variable(s) of interest, selected, constructed, and standardized with validity and reliability in mind. The findings revealed that respondents only partially adhered to construction safety and health in personnel, workplace, and work equipment. Occupational health and safety criteria were partially met in occupational safety and health training, health and safety plans, civil works activities, and heavy equipment operations. The Level of Compliance for construction safety and health was also partially met. As a result, it is advised that construction companies will adopt the revised construction safety model.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Miller.), a herbaceous, perennial and aromatic from Apiaceae family, which is used for pharmaceutical, food, health and cosmatic are cultivated in different parts of Iran and much of the world. In this study, the amount of trans-anethole in callus gained from tissue culture of fennel six belonging to different regions of Iran and Turkey have been compared. Tissue culture is a randomized trial. Factor of evaluating in the first node (hypocotyl) has been as explants and hormonal composition of 2,4-D+Kinetin and NAA+BAP was used for callus induction. Callus extracts were extracted by using organic solvent and finally the effective compound was determined, using GC/MS. The results show that the highest percentage of essential oil compounds in callus of E,E 2,4-Decadienal of 46.22% and cineole were 1,8 of the 35.17 percent, respectively. Our results indicate that the derived callus from fennel plants in the MS environment and with herbal hormone has been able to produce volatile compounds.

During the two winter seasons (2016/017 and 2017/018) respectively to evaluate some grain maize genotypes for resistance to stem borer and identify the most tolerance of these genotypes to Stem Borer infestation. Thirteen (STB.G1, STB.G2, STB.G3, STB.G4, STB.G5, STB.G6, STB.G7, STB.G8, STB.G9, STB.G10, STB.G11) maize genotypes were used in this study: with two check of maize variety (check. 1(Mugtama45) and ckeck. 2 (Var.113),). The experiments were arranged in Randomized Complete Block design (RCBD) with three replications. The data collected were used in this study were : Germination percentages, plant population, plant height, ear height, ear length, days to 50% Tasselling, days to 50% silking, ear length, ear diameter, cob diameter, number of rows/ear, number of kernels/row, 100 Kernel weight and Yieldkg/ha. Results showed that the most encouraging genotypes (STB.G 11, STB.G10, STB.G 4, STB.G 6 and STB.G8) of maize production at Kassala state were obtained a high value for potential of grain yield (4132, 3723, 3611, 3302 and 3264kg/ha) respectively, and for the most important of yield components. Among the traits considered, the yield (kg/ha) was the most promising as an indicator of tolerance to stem borer infestation.

The present study demonstrates the ability of GIS and RS in capturing the spatial temporal data. The changing climatic conditions in the country effects the agriculture. The impacts of climate change are not only restricted to the agricultural productivity of the Pakistan but changing climate also impose destructive impacts on the Land use change practices. Three districts of Punjab i.e. Attock, Multan and Gujrat were selected for analysis of climatic effect on wheat production. The time span that is used for analyzing the change in these areas was from 1999-2014. Climatic changes are not always negative ones but sometimes climatic changes are favoring the increased agricultural production. As the change in temperature and rainfall pattern affects the crop conditions, which changes the net production. It is concluded that for real time prediction of crop yield satellite remote sensing could be used for timely management of food crisis in Pakistan as well as in the world.
Extreme weather events and their impact on urban crop production: A case of K...Innspub Net
Extreme weather events are anticipated to increase the existing challenges and generate new combination of vulnerabilities, especially in developing countries. The agricultural sector is the most vulnerable due to overreliance on unpredictable rainfall. This study examined the impact of extreme weather events on urban crop production and the adaptation strategies applied by the farmers. Secondary data were collected through a literature survey and primary data were collected using structured interviews, observations and focus group discussions. A total of 108 crop farmers were interviewed in two wards of Kinondoni District. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 was used to analyze the data and Pearson Chi-square was used to test the statistical significance between variables. The study observed that, farmers perceived extreme weather events including floods (39%), extreme temperatures (36%), and drought (25%). These extreme weather events affected negatively crop production leading damaging of crops and low yields (38%), outbreak of crop pests and disease (38%), drying of water sources (20%), and loss of soil fertility (4%). Crop farmers used various adaptation strategies such as crop diversification (28%), the use of pesticides (23%), changing of cropping patterns and planting calendar (16%), irrigation practices (18%) and replanting (10%). The study recommends for adoption of new farming systems such as vertical farming systems for better output with the use of limited water and land resources.

Catchment degradation has continued to occur globally albeit the presence of Community Forest Associations (CFA) and Water Resource Users Associations (WRUA). Similarly, Kilungu catchment area in Kenya is under the management of the Kenze (CFA) and upper Kaiti (WRUA). This paper examined Kenze CFA and Upper Kaiti WRUA activities by exploring their effectiveness in discharging their statutory functions. This was achieved by carrying out, an exploratory descriptive survey. Data was collected through questionnaires, focus group discussions, 10 key informants’ interviews and direct observations. Descriptive analysis was used. Information was presented in fig.s, tables and percentages. Results showed that upper Kaiti WRUA as more effective in catchment management at moderately (31%) and highly at (37%) as compared to CFA moderately (29%) and highly (5%). In terms of discharging of their statutory functions, Upper Kaiti WRUA was better at a rating of 27% (good) and 23% (very good) as compared to Kenze CFA which was rated at 3% (good) and 6% (very good). This study results implied that Upper Kaiti WRUA was more effective in all aspects of ensuring catchment management as opposed to CFA. In conclusion, a strategy of seizing the opportunities presented by the CFA of being empowered to perform all its activities as required by law with emphasis on the timely preparation and implementation of management plans and WRUA’s continuous improvement should be prioritized. The study recommends new initiatives that improve on the CFA and WRUA activities in order to effectively discharge on their statutory functions.

The study on the Smallholders Socio-Economic Characteristics Oil Palm Value Chain: Constraints and Prospects was conducted in the Littoral region of Cameroon with the used of multi-sampling technique. The study made used of secondary and primary data sources. Data that were collected through survey involved the distribution of structured questionnaires to a sample of 400 smallholders who were purposively selected from two sub-divisions. The data collected through these questionnaires were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Science and Micro Soft Excel, and the interpreted resulted were presented using descriptive method, pie charts and in tables. Results indicated actors in the value chain were faced the constraints of inadequate capital, inadequate storage facilities, and fluctuation in market prices, inadequate roads, among others. Results further indicated that the activity was important as it provided opportunities such as job creation, health enhancement, education enhancement, income amelioration among others to the actors in the value chain.

Acid soils are very common in tea zones. These soils have a pH below 5.0. Below this pH, not only do the soils exhibit toxicity of aluminum and manganese but are deficient of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and molybdenum, hence becoming chemically infertile. Liming is one cheap way of reclaiming these soils. The staple food crops in these tea soils are maize and beans. However the effect of different liming levels on bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and maize (Zea maiys, L.) yield on acid tea-growing ando-humic Nitisol had not before been investigated. A study was therefore conducted to determine the crop response to liming and the appropriate liming level for maize and bean crops in a tea zone soils. The experiment was carried out in Embu County, Kavutiri and Kianjokoma areas, Agro-Ecological Zone (AEZ) UM1. A randomized complete block design with four replications of each lime treatment was used at each site. Lime at rates of 0 (L0), 2.4 (L1), 6 (L2), 8 (L3) t/ha was broadcasted on to 4m x 4m plots and mixed into 0-15cm of soil. There was a significant response to liming for both maize and beans. The maximum maize and beans yield was attained at around liming level L2 (pH 5.5). Above this pH, yields started to decline. The study clearly shows the benefits of soil liming on strongly acid tea soils and also the importance of accurate lime applications.

The ethanol, ethyl acetate, and hexane extracts of the freshwater clam (Corbicula fluminea) were studied for the total phenolics and total flavonoids. Total phenolics and total flavonoids of the extracts were evaluated using Folin-Ciocalteau and Aluminum chloride colorimetric methods respectively. The findings showed that the total phenolics of the ethanol extract (1.67±0.28mg GAE/g of dried sample) were substantially higher than the total phenolics obtained from the ethyl acetate (0.70±0.00mg GAE/g) and hexane extracts (0.56±0.23mg GAE/g). While the total flavonoids in the ethyl acetate extract displayed a slightly higher total flavonoid (43.84±0.92mg QE/g of dried sample) relative to ethanol (30.41±1.34mg QE/g of dried sample) and hexane extracts (20.28±0.00mg QE/g of dried sample). Using ethanol, the highest yield for extraction was obtained. Ethanol is the best solvent among the three – ethanol, ethyl acetate, and hexane in terms of extraction yield and total phenolics. In addition, it can be inferred that the presence of significant amounts of phenolics and flavonoids suggests that freshwater clam is a promising source of antioxidants that provides nourishing proteins and oxidative stress remedies

The objective of this work is to contribute to valorization de Nephelium lappaceum by the characterization of kinetics of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum. The seeds were dehydrated until a constant mass respectively in a drying oven and a microwawe oven. The temperatures and the powers of drying are respectively: 50, 60 and 70°C and 140, 280 and 420 W. The results show that the curves of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum do not present a phase of constant kinetics. The coefficients of diffusion vary between 2.09.10-8 to 2.98. 10-8m-2/s in the interval of 50°C at 70°C and between 4.83×10-07 at 9.04×10-07 m-8/s for the powers going of 140 W with 420 W the relation between Arrhenius and a value of energy of activation of 16.49 kJ. mol-1 expressed the effect of the temperature on effective diffusivity.

Abstract
This study investigated the effectiveness of experience and nature-based learning activities in enhancing college
students’ environmental attitude. It employed pre-test-post-test experimental research design. The participants
were the class of fifty-three college students of a higher education institution in Region 2, Philippines. Seven
learning activities were employed by the researcher namely pamphlets making, environmental-themed movie
poster making, collage making, miniature plant exhibit, vegetable gardening, community clean-up service,
recycled art crafts making, and tree planting drive. In like manner, the pre-attitude score and post-attitude
scores in the standardize environmental attitude inventory test were compared and the significant differences
were determined using paired sample t-test. Results of the study revealed that the different experience-based
learning activities were generally rated interesting. Moreover, it was also revealed that the different learning
activities significantly increased the environmental attitude of the students towards nature enjoyment, support
for interventions and conservation policies environmental movement activism, conservation motivated by
anthropocentric concern, confidence in science and technology, environmental threat, altering nature, personal
conservation behavior, human dominance over nature, human utilization of nature, and ecocentric concern. This
implies that allowing students to be exposed to the different environmental learning activities where direct
learning experience is involved significantly increased students environmental construct.

Introduction
Education for environmental citizenship has become
a fundamental dimension in the curricular
organization of any educational community.
Undoubtedly, moving towards the construction of an
environmental citizenship requires a regulatory
framework and educational practices that will make
this possible (Rios et al, 2017).
Curriculum initiatives which will eventually
transform students as the vanguard of the
environment towards development and sustainable
future are the need of 21st-century education. With
the present ecological crises being experienced
globally, these are not just the tasks assigned to
environmentalists, but it generally involves everyone
and people must develop a sympathetic attitude
towards diversity and sustainability or resources on
earth for the survival and stability of life.
The role of educational institutions in developing
positive attitudes towards the environment is an
indispensable. Keles (2017) affirms that educational
institutions should take leadership in the process of
building knowledge, skills, awareness, values and
sustainable action to achieve the goal of the
sustainable earth in order to make the leaders of
future generations’ conscious and critical thinkers
about environmental sustainability. Since most of
the theories and applications are predominantly
learned at school, the need for learning activities
which enhance the environmental attitude of
students ensures functional environmental
application and significance.
Educational institutions need to increase their efforts
to educate their students for a sustainable future
(Nasa, 2010). The students at the center of education
effort should be provided with the adequate learning
experience to become active participants for
environment protection. According to Jokinen (2016),
these young people are one of the most promising
sectors of the society. They can be promoters of
change, young as they are because of their natural
dynamism and willpower, they can bring the fresh
perspective, energy, drive and a sense of what is
possible.
Hence, college students in the university, when being
educated and informed have greater opportunity to
be involved and take part in addressing
environmental concerns. The specific objectives of
environmental education can be attained in terms of
learners’ awareness, knowledge, value, attitude and
skills, and participation in the resolution of
environmental problems, issues, and concerns.
Hence, the leaners must consider the environment
in its totality- natural and built, technological,
social, economic, political, cultural, historical,
moral, and aesthetic (Lee & Lee, 2008).
Palmer & Neal (1994) noted that the ultimate
objective of environmental education is to encourage
actions towards the resolution of environmental
problems. If environmental education is meant to
help students learn and care for the environment,
then those responsible for implementing these aims
(e.g. teachers) must know the forms of learning
experience that encourage and produce active and
informed minds. As an identified way to improve
students’ environmental behavior in the classroom,
the need to employ experience-based teaching
strategies is needed. Experience-based learning
assumes that learning is based on the engagement
and experience of the students where the key element
is to observe, analyze and reflect on the real learning
environment. This learning has been proven effective
in enhancing the environmental attitude of students.
Previous studies conducted by Ballantyne et al (2002)
confirm that learning experiences in the natural
environment are extremely important in developing
students' environmental knowledge, attitudes, and
responsible actions. In like manner, Bradley et al.
(1999) and Aydin (2010) state that student
participation in environmental programs will make
their increased responsibilities of the environmental
behavior and think about environmental issues.
Consequently, the positive relationship between
environmental awareness and attitude has been
empirically investigated by numerous researchers. Pe'er
et al. (2007) stated that there is a positive relationship
between students' environmental knowledge and
attitudes towards the environment.

Further affirmed by Magulod (2017) found out that
there is a significant relationship between environmental
awareness and attitude of college students.
It can be synthesized from previously conducted
researches that environmental attitude proves that
knowledge and awareness about environment predict
the pro-environment behavior of people across gender,
education level, and cultures but there were few studies
have been empirically conducted to assess learning
strategies which promote environmental attitudes. This
study aims to provide pedagogical models which can
help facilitate the better learning experience for students
to enhance their environmental attitude. Hence, this
study investigated the effectiveness of experience-based
learning activities in enhancing college students’
environmental attitude.
Materials and Methods
Method of Research
The researcher employed one-shot-pre-test-post-test
experimental research design to assess the effectiveness
of experiential learning activities on the environmental
attitude of the students. It involved the comparison of
the environmental pre-attitude mean score and post-
attitude mean-score of the respondents. The students
were exposed to the different experience-based learning
activities and their attitude scores were gathered and
measured before and after the exposure of the students
to the different learning activities.
Research Participants
The participants of the study were the fifty-three
students of one section enrolled in National Service
Training Program (NSTP) under the component of Civic
Welfare Training Service (CWTS) where the researcher
was assigned to teach the subject.
Instruments
The study used the environmental attitude inventory
(EAI) by Milfont & Duckitt (2010) consisted of twelve
scales namely: enjoyment of nature, support for
interventions conservation policies, environment
movement activism, conservation motivated by
anthropocentric concern, confidence in science and
technology, environment threat, altering nature,
personal conservation behavior, human dominance
over nature, human utilization of nature, ecocentric
concern, and support for population growth policies.
The standardized research instrument consisted of
ten items per sub-scale. A Likert scale of 1 as the
lowest and 5 as the highest was adopted.
In like manner, a questionnaire checklist made by the
researcher was also used to assess the level of interest of
the respondents on the use of the different experiential
and nature-based learning activities. The instrument-
checklist consisted of the seven strategies used by the
researcher in teaching. Likert Scale with 1 as to lowest
and 5 as the highest was also used as the response
indicator of the checklist.
Data Gathering Procedure
The experimental procedure of the study lasted for
eight Saturdays. Upon the written permission of the
researcher to the concerned authorities. As an ethical
consideration of the study, the respondents were
oriented about the purpose of data gathering and they
were asked to participate. Their participation was
voluntary. Gathering of data was conducted before
and after the final examination of the respondents to
their subject National Service Training Program
(NSTP). Fig. 1 shows the paradigm of the study.

The pre-experimental phase was the orientation on
the activities and guidelines to be conducted with the
topic environmental education. The students were
requested to answer the environment attitude
inventory questionnaire for their pre-attitude
assessment. Planning and scheduling of the different
activities were conducted. For the experimental
phase, the researcher employed the different
experiential-based learning activities in which the

students participated very well. Finally, for the post-
experimental phase, after the exposure of the
students with the different learning activities, they
were asked to answer the environment attitude
inventory questionnaire for their post-attitude
assessment. They also answered the survey checklist
to assess their level of interest in the different
experience-based learning activities.
Data Analysis
The descriptive data analysis tool was used to present
the assessment of the respondents. The weighted
mean was utilized to determine the learning activities
perceived by the respondents very interesting.
Meanwhile, dependent sample t-test was used to
identify the significant difference on the pre-attitude
and post-attitude of the respondents. To interpret the
level of interest and attitude of the respondents, the
scale of interpretation followed this range: 4.20-5.00
(very high/very interesting); 3.40-4.19 (high/
interesting); 2.60-3.39 (moderate/neutral); 1.8-2.59
(not interesting/low); 1.0-1.79 (very uninteresting/
very low). All the hypotheses of the study were
rejected at 0.05 level of significance.
Results and discussion
Students' Level of interest in the different
environmental-based learning activities
Consistent with the objectives of the study, Table 1
presents the respondents level of interest on the
different environmental-based learning activities.
Based on the gathered data, the respondents generally
assessed themselves to have a high level of interest as
evidence with the grand mean of 4.12 (high). The
finding implies that students manifested greater
environmental learning interest through experience-
based approach. Experience-based learning is the
acquisition of knowledge, experience, attitude, and
skills derived from one's own experience (Matsuo et
al, 2008). Teaching environment concepts and
awareness become better when it is experience-based.

The assessment of the respondents suggests that the
use of the different environmental-based learning
activities allowed the respondents to exhibit a high
level of interest and motivation. It can also be
specifically observed that movie poster making
activity (4.70, SD= 0.46) and tree planting drive
(4.74, SD=0.45) were assessed by the respondents
very interesting activities to engage with. Meanwhile,
pamphlets making (3.39, SD=0.64), community clean
up (4.02, SD= 0.84), vegetable gardening (4.11,
SD=0.67), miniature plant exhibit (3.91, SD=0.40),
art crafts making from recycled materials (3.83,
SD=0.83). and collage making (3.49, SD=0.67) were

A closer inspection of the table shows that the
students perceived movie poster making activity (Fig
1) very interesting with the highest mean of 4.70
among the environmental-based learning activities.
This suggests that the use of this activity stimulated
positive effect on the behavior of the students. The
students were asked to illustrate the effects of
environmental issues such as black magnetite mining,
illegal logging, destruction of coral reefs and pollution
by way of designing movie posters. The students
pretended to be filmmakers. They invented titles for
their movie posters and they were asked to be the
actors. The activity becomes good since it forced the
students to research on the different environmental
issues and their effects on biodiversity. It also allowed
the students to use their visual imagination about the
possible effects of these environmental issues if not
addressed. The activity captured the interest of the
students to manifest environmental concern.
This finding further suggests that the use of movie-
inspired learning activity can enhance students'
level of environmental concern. Mishan (2004)
noted that movies can be considered as authentic
material and they provide the learners with
genuine input. Katchen (2003) also affirmed that
movies can also arouse feelings and opinions and
create discussion. Thus, using film-inspired
activities in the classroom as authentic material
requires an emphasis on the teaching approach,
which should be content- and task-based.

Tree planting activity (Fig. 2) as environmental
learning activity was assessed very interesting with
the mean of 4.74. This indicates that the students
considered tree planting drive as a purposeful activity
to preserve the environment. Tree planting initiative
has been considered as a mitigating factor for climate
change and other environmental issues. The students
were required to have tree planting activity as part of
their requirements in civic welfare training service.
This allowed the students to realize better about the
role of trees in greening landscapes, cleaning the air
and reducing energy use. McPherson & Rowntree
(1993) noted that there has been a growing interest
towards having a greener environment through tree
planting campaign efforts globally, as trees are
purported to provide many benefits such as
temperature modification and energy conservation.
Concomitantly, Tyrvainen et al. (2005) affirmed that
trees are an abatement of air and water pollution.

Leaflet making activity (Fig 2) was also assessed by the
students with the mean of 3.89 interpreted to have an
interesting attribute. The pamphlet making activity
allowed the students to design leaflets containing
environmental information with colored photographs,
color-coded heading, and other visual features.
The activity provided the students the opportunity to
design their own leaflets bearing the information about
environmental education, solid waste management, and
disaster risk reduction management. Young & Witter
(2010) found out that brochures and pamphlets were
effective in enhancing participants’ knowledge about
environmental problems.

College making activity (Fig 3) obtained the mean of
3.49 which was assessed by the students interesting.
The activity enhanced the interest of the students
through group learning activity to illustrate their role
as the youth as vanguards of the environment for
sustainability. The students were asked to create an
art by sticking various materials depicting their role
in the environment. This learning activity promotes
interdisciplinary understanding of nature and built
environment through humanities and arts. This paves
the way to use art as a model of acquiring and
interpreting knowledge of the environment enhancing
the creativity and artistry of the students.
According to Jacobson et al (2007), there were few
integrative practices from the arts and humanities to
help students understand the broader context of
individual and collective actions regarding the
environment. Likewise, Miles (2010) speculated that
contemporary art dealing with climate change and
environmental issues have the capacity to contribute
to a shift in consciousness and likely to be conducive
to a more sustainable way of living. Miniature plants
exhibit (Fig 4) also obtained the mean of 3.91
described as an interesting learning activity. This
allowed the students to create a scene in nature and a
miniature of the ecosystem. The activity motivated
the students to study the characteristics of plants, the
process how the plants perform photosynthesis, and
the proper way of taking of plants.

The artistic and aesthetic vision about the
environment influences seriously what the students
think, feel and do about the environment. Hence, the
use of arts is considered an important factor in
promoting deeper awareness and attitudes of
students towards the environment. Hence, the
integration of environment art education plays a
prominent role in greening the environment.

Another interesting learning activity is horticulture
activity which was assessed with the mean of 4.11. The
students were engaged by practicing cultivation and
management of vegetables in their community service
area. Horticultural practices are increasingly being
used to improve environmental attitudes towards
specific environmental issues in the school curriculum.
Karsch & Kathryn (2003) found out that there is a
significant increase in the environmental awareness
and attitudes of students when engaged in gardening.

She further noted that horticulture as a possible
solution to engaging students in science education
because of its more activity-based approach. In like
manner, Waliczek & Zajicek (1999) concluded in their
study that participation in garden activities results in
students gaining more positive attitudes about
environmental issues.

Further, community cleaning service assessed by the
students with the mean of 4.02 interpreted as an
interesting activity. The students were able to
experience cleaning sidewalks and roads. This
allowed the students to become directly involved in
environmental health and sanitation. They were
responsible for segregating biodegradable and
degradable wastes with proper disposal. Such activity
provided the students to develop a more positive
environmental attitude. Markus et al (1993)
concluded that integrating service learning through
students' participation in community service with
classroom instruction can have a significant effect on
their personal values and orientations towards the
community. In like manner, Schuiltz et al (2005)
found out that the involvement of students in civics
club and their understanding of environmental
concepts showed that students’ performance very well
in the knowledge test.
Finally, art crafts making from recycled wastes
assessed by the respondents with the mean of 3.83
which is interesting. The activity allowed the
creativity of students to turn recycled wastes
materials into a Christmas lantern and recycled dolls.
Such learning activity promoted the students to
practice and internalize the three R’s (reduce, reuse,
and recycle) with the appeal of making arts and crafts.
According to Rosenthal (2003) environmental art-
making can address contemporary environmental and
social issues, can promote system thinking by
recognizing interconnections and complexity.
Concomitantly, Jacobson et al (2007) also noted that
the integration of science and arts is important yet
being ignored strategy for effective resource
management and communication.

Test of Difference on the pre- and post-
environmental attitude scores of the students
exposed to the different experience-based learning
activities
The pre and post-attitude inventory test was
administered in order to determine the significant
change in the environmental attitudes of the students
after employing the use of different experience and
nature-based environmental learning activities.
The tables reveal the comparison of the
environmental attitude of the respondents along
with the twelve sub-scales of environmental attitude
namely attitude of the students towards nature
enjoyment, support for interventions and
conservation policies environmental movement
activism, conservation motivated by anthropocentric
concern, confidence in science and technology,
environmental threat, altering nature, personal
conservation behavior, human dominance over
nature, human utilization of nature, and ecocentric

concern activities exposed to the different
environmental learning activities before and after
the study. Hence, the null hypotheses of the study
were rejected.

Table 2 shows the comparison on the nature
enjoyment attitude of the respondents exposed to the
different learning activities before and after the study.
The students had a pre-attitude score of 2.81
(moderate) and a post-attitude score of 4.08 (high)
with the (t-ratio=-13.46) and (p value=0.000). Thus,
there is a significant difference between the attitude
of the students before and after the treatment of the
study where the respondents developed a high
positive attitude towards nature enjoyment. The
increased attitude means score indicates that the
students manifest higher enjoyment in nature and
other natural settings.

Table 3 presents that the students had a pre-attitude
score of 3.55 (High) and a post-attitude score of 4.15
(high) with the (t-ratio=--3.528) and (p
value=0.000) indicating that there is an increased
on the attitude of the students before and after the
treatment of the study on their support for
interventionist conservation policies. The finding
suggests that the students showed a higher positive
attitude of practicing 3R’s, conserve energy, adopt
the more conserving lifestyle, and become more
oriented on the existing policies and laws governing
environmental protection.

A closer look at Table 4, it reveals that the students had a
pre-attitude score of 3.06 (moderate) and a post-attitude
score of 3.87 (high) with the (-0.811) and (p
value=0.000) indicating that there is an increased on the
attitude of the students before and after the treatment of
the study towards support for environmental movement
activism. This suggests that the students exhibited a
higher level of personal readiness to actively support an
organized action for environmental protection. Their
willingness to extend support for environmentalist cause
was enhanced through the use of different
environmental learning activities.

Meanwhile, Table 5presents that the students had a
pre-attitude score of 2.45 (Low) and a post-attitude
score of 4.58 (Very High) with the t ratio of (-13.370)
and (p value=0.000) indicating that there a significant
high increased on the attitude of the students towards
conservation motivated by anthropocentric concern
before and after the treatment of the study. The finding
suggests that the students showed a very high positive
attitude on practicing 3R's, conserve energy, adopt the
more conserving lifestyle, and become more oriented
on the existing policies and laws governing
environmental protection.

In like manner, Table 6 reveals the pre-attitude score
of 3.30 (moderate) and a post-attitude score of 3.87
(high) with t-ration of (-3.114) and (p-value of 0.002).
The finding suggests that after the engagement of the
students on the different environmental learning
activities, they showed a high attitude level towards
confidence in science and technology as tools to solve
environmental problems. They manifested higher
belief that technology can avert or repair damage or
harm to the environment.

Meanwhile, Table 7 shows that the comparison of the
pre-attitude and post-attitude scores of the
respondents exposed to the different learning
activities before and after the study. The students had
a pre-attitude score of 3.25 (moderate) and a post-
attitude score of 4.28 (High) with the (t-ratio=-3.531)
and (p value=0.000).The increased post-attitude
score of the respondents indicates that the students
attained high belief and attitude on the fragility of the
environment that all serious damages done to the
environment could soon have catastrophic
consequences for both nature and humans. They
exhibited higher belief that if things which can
destroy the environment will still be persistently
done, a major ecological catastrophe will be
experienced in the future.

Table 8 presents that the students had a pre-attitude
score of 3.18 (moderate) and a post-attitude score of
3.96 (high) with the (t-ratio=-5.670) and (p
value=0.000) indicating that there is an increase on
the attitude of the students before and after the
treatment of the study towards altering the nature.
The finding means that the students showed a high
level of attitude towards promoting actions which can
help preserve the environment in its original and
pristine state and should not be altered in any way by
human activity or intervention.

Table 9 clearly presents that the students had a pre-
attitude score of 3.00 (moderate) and a post-attitude
score of 4.39 (Very High) with the (t ratio= -11.785)
and (p-value of 0.000). This suggests that there is a
significant difference on the pre-attitude mean and
post-attitude mean of the respondents before and
after the conduct of the study. The finding implies
that the students attained a very high level of attitude
towards personal conservation behavior after their
exposure to the different environmental earning
activities. This suggests that the students were able to
show a positive attitude towards taking care to
conserve resources and protect the environment in
their personal everyday behavior.

Subsequently, Table10 shows the pre-attitude score of
the students is 3.64 (high) and post-attitude of 3.84
(high) with the computed (t ratio= -3.040) and (p-
value of 0.000) indicates significant difference before
and after the exposure to the different learning
activities. This means that the students manifested a
high level of attitude towards the idea that nature
exists primarily for human use, hence they were able
to realize that humans and nature have the same
rights where humans should.

respondents have a pre-attitude score of 3.00
(moderate) and a post-attitude score of 3.90 (high)
with the computed (t ratio= 0.6688) and (p value=
0.000) showed significant difference before and after
their exposure with the different learning activities.
This suggests that students manifested higher
attitude on the idea that environmental protection
should be given priority rather than economic and
development growth.

Table 12 shows that there is a significant difference on
the pre-attitude score of 3.32 (moderate) and the
post-attitude score of 3.98 (high) with the computed
(p value= 0.00) revealing that the students obtained a
high level of attitude towards ecocentric concern after
their exposure to the different learning activities.
The finding suggests that the students showed a high
level of concern when they see natural environments
being destroyed particularly when forests are being
cleared for agricultural and residential purposes.

Lastly, Table 13 presents that there is no significant
difference on the pre-attitude and post-attitude mean
scores of the respondents towards support for
population growth policies. The pre-attitude mean
score of 2.62 (moderate) and post-attitude mean
score 2.66 (moderate) showed no significant
difference. This means that the students have still a
moderate level of attitude towards supporting policies
which regulate population growth before and after
their exposure to the different learning activities.
The study generally revealed that with the exposure of
the students to the different environment and
experience-based learning activities, it significantly
increased their level of environmental attitude. The
finding of the present study can be confirmed by
Ballantyne & Packer (2002) that learning in natural
environments is attractive to students and has an
important impact on their attitudes towards the
environment, their desire to look after the
environment, their behavior in natural areas and their
household environmental practices. They further
concluded that combining teaching instruction with
observation is a powerful teaching strategy, especially
when it allows students to understand the impact of
human activities on wildlife and natural habitats. In
like manner, In the study of Coertjens et al (2010)
found out that schools in which science is taught in a
more hands-on manner are associated with higher
student environmental awareness whilst
environmental learning activities are associated with
more pro-environmental attitudes among students.
Conclusion
Based on the findings of the study, it is concluded
that the use of the different environmental-based
learning activities allowed the respondents to
exhibit a high level of learning interest. Tree
planting drive and environmental movie poster
making were very interesting learning activities
while pamphlets making, community clean-up,
vegetable gardening, miniature plant exhibit, art
crafts making from recycled materials and
environmental collage making were assessed as
interesting learning activities by the respondents.

In like manner, the study also found out that the use of
the different environmental-based learning activities
significantly resulted to the increased level of students’
environmental attitude towards nature enjoyment,
support for interventions and conservation policies
environmental movement activism, conservation
motivated by anthropocentric concern, confidence in
science and technology, environmental threat, altering
nature, personal conservation behavior, human
dominance over nature, human utilization of nature,
and ecocentric concern.
This implies that allowing students to be exposed to the
different environmental learning activities where direct
learning experience is involved significantly increased
students environmental construct.
Recommendations
Based on the findings of the study, the following
recommendations were drawn: (1) experience and
nature-based learning activities significantly resulted in
the students’ increased level of environmental attitude,
hence maximum utilization of these leaning activities
should be initiated to supplement environmental-based
lessons; (2) teachers should be encouraged to develop
and design more experienced-based learning activities to
teach environmental education to increase students’’
environmental attitude; (3) to further strengthen the
involvement of students in environmental protection
campaign and advocacy, the university may encourage
and empower student organizations to align their goals
for the environmental preservation and conservation;
(4) a replication of the study with bigger number of
respondents and more nature-based activities should be
conducted with longer duration of students’ exposure.
In consonance with the above recommendations, the
implications of the study to curriculum development
are to allow higher education institutions conduct
curriculum reviews by vertically and horizontally
integrating environmental themes and concepts to the
different related courses. Faculty members may be
encouraged to reflect on the redefinition of the
teaching methods to experience-based approaches
incorporating environmental concepts and values.
