Certain parts of the brain govern specific functions
Reward
Natural Rewards The Reward Pathway
Humans engage in behaviours that are rewarding. The pleasurable feelings
provide positive reinforcement so that the behaviour is repeated. There are
natural rewards and artificial rewards such as drugs.
The basis of nurturing is the basis of social media - noticing what others are
concerned about, making reliable promises, etc.

Impulse control
by the frontal lobes

Brain maturation culminates in the frontal lobes.
This brain region controls judgment and the
weighing of risks and consequences.
MATURE
IMMATURE
Functions of the frontal lobes
1. A clear or deep perception of a situation.
2. A feeling of understanding.
3. A grasping the inner nature of things intuitively.
The frontal lobes are not fully developed until the mid-20s
1. Self-awareness: knowing your own strengths and
weakness, as well as drives and values.
2. Self-regulation: being able to control disruptive emotions
and adapt to new circumstances.
3. Social skill: capable of managing relationships with other
people effectively.
4. Empathy: taking into account other people’s feelings when
making decisions.
5. Motivation: a drive to succeed.
Children rely on adults to guide them toward these qualities
