• Depression is a common mental disorder. Globally, more than 264
million people of all ages suffer from depression.
• Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide and is a major
contributor to the overall global burden of disease.

• There are many different mental disorders, with different
presentations. They are generally characterized by a combination of
abnormal thoughts, perceptions, emotions, behaviour and
relationships with others.

including autism.
• There are effective strategies for preventing mental disorders such as
depression.

10. Suicide
• More than 700 000 people die due to suicide every year.
• For every suicide there are many more people who attempt suicide. A
prior suicide attempt is the single most important risk factor for
suicide in the general population.
• Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in 15-19-year-olds.
• 77% of global suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries.

• Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe mental disorder affecting 20 million
people worldwide.
• Schizophrenia is characterized by distortions in thinking, perception,
emotions, language, sense of self and behaviour. Common experiences
include hallucinations (hearing voices or seeing things that are not there) and
delusions (fixed, false beliefs).
• Worldwide, schizophrenia is associated with considerable disability and may
affect educational and occupational performance.
• People with schizophrenia are 2-3 times more likely to die early than the
general population. This is often due to preventable physical diseases, such as
cardiovascular disease, metabolic disease and infections.
