E-agriculture involves using information and communication technologies (ICTs) to support agriculture, forestry, and fisheries. It was identified as an action line in the World Summit on the Information Society's 2003-2005 plan to meet Millennium Development Goal 8 on global partnerships for development. Early examples included virtual extension and research networks providing accessible information and managing large data amounts. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations now facilitates a global community of practice exchanging ideas and resources on using ICTs for sustainable agriculture and food security through its website and social media presence, events, publications, and forums.
