What is Augmentative & Alternative Communication?  The term augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is used to define all forms of communication other than oral speech. Augmentative and alternative communication ranges from: Gestures Sign Languages Facial  Expressions Picture/Symbol Boards Computerized Systems In many cases, individuals with severe speech or language problems use AAC to supplement existing speech or replace speech that is not functional.  Special augmentative aids, such as picture and symbol communication boards and electronic devices, are available to help people express themselves.
What is Augmentative & Alternative Communication? Two Categories: Aided vs. Unaided  Unaided Communication- relies on the user’s body to convey messages.  Vocalizations  Gestures Sign language Head nods Eye gaze Aided Communication- relies on the use of tools or equipment in addition to the user's body. Paper and Pencil Laptop Computers Speech Synthesizers
What is Augmentative & Alternative Communication? Usually, many nonspeaking individuals  use a combination of both aided and unaided methods. Many AAC devices have been shown to enhance: Communication Social interaction  School performance Feelings of self-worth AAC techniques and devices have become more and more prevalent in educational settings. Educational Possibilities  An estimated 5% of school-aged children  have speech and language disorders that impact their lives everyday.
