Abstract: Among the Millennium Development Goals, MDG 5 Maternal Health has as its dual objectives: (a) reduce by three quarters the maternal mortality ratio; and (b) achieve universal access to reproductive health. Existing maternal health survey instruments were evaluated, modified, adapted, and used to assess perceptions and practices by mothers in villages located in the state of Gujarat in western India as well as women residing in urban Mumbai (formerly Bombay). Women who had recently given birth were asked a series of questions regarding maternal attitudes and behaviors before, during, and shortly after pregnancy including basic health data (i.e., height and weight), basic health care data (i.e., antenatal, delivery, and postnatal visits by health care professionals), and basic reproductive health practices (i.e., the knowledge of, use, and availability of birth control methods). The results from the surveys will ultimately be used to assess the efficacy of an IT- based intervention wherein pregnant moms will register with an SMS text message thereafter receiving reminders about health, simple questions, and follow-up to improve health outcomes during and immediately following pregnancy.

Greenmash – Case Study – SMS for Life Kenya V2
Greenmash was commissioned to help resolve stock-outs of malaria tests and treatments in Kenya using an SMS-based solution. Before, stock-outs were common, with over 40% of facilities out of stock at a time and resupply taking 1-2 months. Greenmash designed an SMS system to collect stock data weekly from health facilities. This provided real-time visibility and reduced stock-outs, with positive health outcomes like increased testing and treatment. An evaluation found stock-outs were eliminated and response rates exceeded 97%, demonstrating the solution's effectiveness.

Explores two domains which, on the surface, may seem very different – the US policy directing metrics to measure HIT adoption across the nation and the implementation and utilisation of a practice management system auditing tool (Dr Info) within a region of New Zealand’s general practices. Yet, when looked at under a different view, there are similarities which drive the use of HIT to improve results that engage patients in self-management of their health and clinicians in population health management. Both can improve the delivery of healthcare and provide value for money but both also need support and systems that foster innovation at a patient and practice level. This will continue to be an issue as the health workforce ages and becomes smaller. It is therefore crucially important how we utilise and train our workforce, that they have HIT systems that support their work with the approach that through showing results and improving results, clinicians will engage and want to use the technology to improve their practice. At the same time patients will need support to self-manage their conditions through the utilisation of patient portals and other innovative HIT initiatives.
