Why We Need Design Science
Design is at a crossroads, with traditional
boundaries breaking and new fields
opening, our profession needs to address:
•  The democratisation of design
•  The growth of design automation
•  The merging of related disciplines
In essence:
WE NEED BETTER DESIGN
The Design Science Manifesto!

!1.  Apply the Scientific method to Design
2.  Use design to generate knowledge
3.  Accumulate Design Science knowledge
4.  Measure achievement through data
5.  Assure professional excellence
Apply the Scientific Method to Design
1.  Make observations
2.  Question and gather information
3.  Form hypothesis
4.  Make predictions from hypothesis
5.  Test the hypothesis and predictions in an
experiment that can be reproduced
6.  Analyze the data and draw conclusions
7.  Reproduce the experiment until there are no
discrepancies between observations and
theory
Use Design to Generate Knowledge
Explore ways in which design outcomes
and practices can add insight by:
1.  Identifying the parameters of design
2.  Focusing on the material world of human
practice
3.  Exploring latency and opportunity as well as
problem hypothesis
4.  Making stuff to test theories
5.  Reflecting on practice to improve methods
Accumulate Design Science Knowledge
Build and contribute to a robust and
empirically validated knowledge base by:
1.  Citing the contributions of others
2.  Enabling others to verify your findings
3.  Focusing on new and valuable knowledge
4.  Peer reviewing and active participation
5.  Extracting actionable recommendations

Apply the Scientific Method to Design 1.  Make observations 2.  Question and gather information 3.  Form hypothesis 4.  Make predictions from hypothesis 5.  Test the hypothesis and predictions in an experiment that can be reproduced 6.  Analyze the data and draw conclusions 7.  Reproduce the experiment until there are no discrepancies between observations and theory
